McFarlane Doesn't Think Venom Movie will Work

Comic book artist/writer and action figure maker, Todd McFarlane, who is one of the creators of the Marvel villain Venom, doesn't think a Venom movie will do well. Get his take after the jump.
But even if the new Venom is "creepier," the artist questioned the idea of a villain being the center character of a Spider-Man spin-off. "I'm thinking about how they want to make anti-heroes nowadays," he said, using the Halle Berry Catwoman film as an example. "Those don't work. The reason they're so cool as a bad guy is because they're bad. And as soon as you try to give too much humanity to them, then you go, no! Now they're not as good as a bad guy because you're trying to redeem them."

He said that although "smart people can make things happen in other ways," he doesn't think Venom can make an audience care about him if he's still a villain. McFarlane said that Don Corleone and the Sopranos are examples of characters who were able to entice viewer sympathy despite their villainy, "but they were human. Can you bring that mentality to Venom and make it work? Or do you make him all bad?

"You're trying to give something to people when they leave. I don't know if you can have a movie about a guy who goes out there and maims everybody and wins all the time," he said. "I don't know what their mindset is and how they can get there other than adding too much niceness to him, but we'll see."

I think its tough but it can be done, as long as it disassociates with venom and doesnt try any forced cliche' plot devices to make us feel sorry for eddie brock or show any sort of big redemption. A venom - carnage stand off from the perspective of an outsider could be awesome but its all pretty hard without spider-man. A Spider-man, Venom, Carnage 3 way is my movie wish but it wont happen as carnage is too homicidal for 12a audiences (or the general consensus seems to be) and venom was massacred and killed off already on film already. Im interested how the venom comic spin off depicted eddie and venom and whether it made him an anti-hero or showed him to be still quite villainous etc.

If they 86 Eric Forman and make venom look like he's supposed to then it might be worth seeing on dvd or something but I don't think I'd go to the theater to see it. McFarlane needs to make a GOOD Spawn movie. I'd go see that. Spidy 3 was just such a let down that I really don't care about that series anymore.

True Dat!! Are ya listening (reading?) Todd? Forget Venom. Make a really good live-action Spawn. Emphasize the Morality tale aspect and Love Story without getting sappy. Make it more like Doctor Faustus by C. Marlowe and add some elements from Milton's Paradise Lost. It's in there already. Just needs better articulation. We miss SPAWN! Reboot, reboot, reboot!!!!

There are many aspects to this situation.A movie about Venom could work IF they portrayed him as he is in the comics,a lethal protector.Venom truly believes that he is a good guy,but he goes about protecting innocents, which he holds in the highest regards,in a much different way than other superheroes. He will kill to protect innocent people, that's where the big difference is.But his madness is all tied to Spider-Man.It was Spider-Man whom he believes destroyed his career as a journalist, and the symbiote hates him because he tried to kill it.Once Spider-Man tricked him into believing he had killed him, therefore the madness was over.I would like to see a Venom movie because he is such a complex character. They didn't do him any justice in the movie with only about 20 minutes of him.And rot_in_piss was right, they didn't really show him die. That symbiote has the ability to cloak itself and Eddie. Many times Spider-Man has thought the symbiote was dead and it keeps showing up.But then again, the Sandman,at one point in the comics, was a good guy.But most of his life he was a very bad guy.Doc Ock too was also a bad guy.He wasn't being controlled by the arms. And the Green Goblin is Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin,There was never a split personality there.Osborn always knew what he was doing as the Goblin. No wonder these writers didn't get paid well if they were going to chop up stories like this.I don't think they deserve any more money than what they made before.

a venom movie would be awsome he's like spider-man that is pissed off and not going to take anyones shit.i think they should get matt schulze to play eddie brock and get matthew lillard to play carnage, its not like they can use him in spider-man it would be like venom can you say (echo).
