BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Will Pass $2 Billion Worldwide Later This Week

While it will now definitely become only the third movie in history to reach $2 billion, just how close is Star Wars: The Force Awakens going to come to both Avatar and Titanic amazing records?

According to Variety, Star Wars: The Force Awakens should hit the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office by the end of this week. That's an incredible feat for a movie which has only been out for a little over six weeks, and it's well ahead of Avatar domestically with an incredible $895.4 million (it should become the first movie in history to make $900 million any day now).

Of course, the story worldwide is a little different. With $1.983 billion in total, the J.J. Abrams helmed release needs only $17 million more to reach $2 billion. However, that's a long way off the $2.78 billion held by Avatar and still some distance behind Titanic's $2.19 billion. It's now believed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will finish its run with around $2.05 billion. Of course, a re-release somewhere down the line could push that number up, but for now, it will have to settle with being the third highest grossing release in history and one of only three movies to earn $2 billion. Not too shabby, eh?

Talking about the fact that the movie has broken records it too months for Avatar to break in North America, Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, told the trade: "The box office performance of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ shows just how much ‘Star Wars’ is part of the DNA of moviegoers in North America. It shows how important legacy can be for a movie because there’s been an incredible enthusiasm for this one."

$2 billion FTW! Everything is going as I've planned....

MrFridayNights - 2/1/2016, 2:10 AM
@FrozenJoy - No, you said that Star Wars The Force Awakens would make $3 billion at the box office.
MrMartyMarvel - 1/31/2016, 5:08 PM
I wonder how episode nine will do? Either it'll do even better due to possibly being the last Star movie (probably not), or it won't do as well because not having the hype of being the return of Star Wars.
MexicanSexyman - 1/31/2016, 5:55 PM
@MrMartyMarvel - It probably won't make as much. Probably around $1.5 billion. Hype made Ep. VII get that much money. Look at Ep. 1.
manga - 1/31/2016, 5:08 PM
2 billion is not bad for a remake
MexicanSexyman - 1/31/2016, 5:55 PM

Choke.
FrozenJoy - 1/31/2016, 5:09 PM
Episode 8: $2.5 billion
Episode 9: $3 billion
Rogue One: $1.6 billion

My almost accurate predictions.
TitanicByMyself - 1/31/2016, 5:10 PM
@FrozenJoy - accurate compared to what?
DerekLake - 1/31/2016, 5:51 PM
@FrozenJoy - Weren't you predicting $3 billion for TFA?

I imagine that Star Wars will hover around $2 billion, but won't do much more than that. Similar to how Age of Ultron hovered around $1.5 billion. Infinity War has the chance to do $2 billion simply because of how big a cast and story it will be, but I don't think Star Wars really has any novelty left. About the only thing that would boost its numbers significantly is the return of Darth Vader.

I just saw this for the 5th time yesterday and I'm still not sick of it. The only other movie I have been to the cinema that amount of times to see was Fury Road. Both movies are just so much fun to watch and don't tire on multiple viewings. As far as I'm concerned, this film deserves every penny it makes.
BodieBroadus - 1/31/2016, 6:12 PM
@bcom - Jesus, who has the time and money to go the movies 10 times, for 2 movies? The movie I saw the most in cinemas was probably The Dark Knight, which I saw 3 times.
GrilledPopcorn - 2/1/2016, 5:50 AM
@BodieBroadus - People with no spouses &/or bratty kids. IMO TFA & FR >>>>>>>> TDK
BodieBroadus - 2/1/2016, 6:15 AM
@GrilledPopcorn - I don't understand anything you said after bratty kids.
bcom - 2/1/2016, 2:32 PM
@BodieBroadus - Haha! Like GrilledPopcorn said, no kids or a spouse means I spend my money and time on me :-). I love movies so will go whenever I can, even if it means seeing a movie I like multiple times. Star Wars just happened to be multiple viewings with separate friends who hadn't seen it yet so I went along with them.
FrozenJoy - 1/31/2016, 5:11 PM
The Force Awakens will end up with $2.2 billion, passing Titanic.
GrilledPopcorn - 2/1/2016, 5:51 AM
@FrozenJoy - I doubt it.
permaturenut - 1/31/2016, 5:30 PM
doesnt deserve it - there were plenty of movies that were better than it this year (2015) - empire is still the best.

the hype is not real but either or congrats star wars - soon infinity wars will topple all
CaptainWagner - 1/31/2016, 5:32 PM
@permaturenut - How exactly do you think the movie made 2 billion dollars is the hype "wasn't real"?
MagnusShadowX - 1/31/2016, 5:42 PM
@permaturenut - perhaps combined Infinity Wars might gross what Episode 7 did , but highly unlikely .
bcom - 2/1/2016, 2:42 PM
@permaturenut - The movie will make $2 billion in less than 8 weeks of release. That is ridiculous money for the short amount of release time. No other movie has done that. The hype is real and deserved. I have no doubt that the Infinity Wars movies will make a lot of money but I don't think they have the generational following that Star Wars has to earn the same amount of money. I think combined they will make close to $2 billion but individually they'll make around a billion each I'd wager.
permaturenut - 2/1/2016, 4:29 PM
@permaturenut - what I'm trying to say fellow nerd brathas - is I saw the movie....my expectations were extremely high and it fell horribly short, there was several movies last year that blew my mind on what you could really do with story - I think a lot of fan boys are just rejoicing instead of looking at it as a film - there's too many lazy writing points, not enough true Star Wars in the movie and most of it is a goddamn copy of new hope - I was sitting there in the theater pissed - it's not a bad movie but I'm a serious Star Wars fan

Also to the ppl who think infinity ward will only make 2 billion together....wtf Hahahaha hehege r u [frick]ing serious - shit civil war has a chance to hit 2 nil as much as BVS - infinity wars will most likely make 3.5 to 4 billion together
bcom - 2/1/2016, 5:22 PM
@permaturenut - "there's too many lazy writing points, not enough true Star Wars". Seriously, if you re-watch the original trilogy, it's full of 'lazy writing points', but like The Force Awakens, it's brilliantly acted. My biggest concern of going into this movie is that it wouldn't 'feel' like a Star Wars move but it did, it fits more perfectly with the original trilogy than it does with the prequel trilogy. I'm not saying you're an idiot if you didn't like it, not at all, I'm just saying that it was exactly what a modern Star Wars movie should be... well to me it was anyway.

@ Daisy Ridley
Uh... Hi! Um... I just wanted to ask, if you're not too busy, maybe if you would like to marriage?
FrozenJoy - 1/31/2016, 5:40 PM
Best movie of 2015 and best Star Wars movie since Empire.
Bl00dwerK - 1/31/2016, 8:37 PM
@FrozenJoy - Bullshit on both.
