WB Considering Jon Hamm for Superman
Mon, July 26, 2010

Christopher Nolan is producing, David Goyer writing and Jonah Nolan possibly helming. That's enough to get fans excited and what not, but it doesn’t answer the question everyone wants to know, "Who will be the new Superman?"

With plans set for a December 2012 release, we've heard different names out in the open ranging from "Chuck" star Zachary Levi in the rumor mill department to "True Blood " actor Joe Manganiello publicly campaigning for the role. But who do the studios (in this case, Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures) have their eye on for mild-mannered Clark Kent and his red-and-blue suit wearing alter ego, or is it the other way around?

Sources tell TMT one such actor being "seriously considered" is Mad Men star Jon Hamm.

At thirty-nine (he'd be past forty when "The Man of Steel" opens), he's certainly older than who's regularly looked at for these franchises. Then again, look at Robert Downey Jr. He's starring in the "Iron Man" and "Sherlock Holmes" films (and then there's "The Avengers") and he's a few years older. Not to mention, Hamm happens to have been a fan favorite for Kal-El for years now. Something that was suggested to him directly by MTV and it wasn't like he immediately dismissed the notion.

Before anyone starts nerdgasming, keep in mind no deal is in place and there's no indication Hamm and/or his representation has met with WB, Legendary or the Nolan crew. He's one of several names being thrown around the Burbank offices to headline the new Superman franchise, but it gives you an idea of what direction they're looking.

*Personally, I was pulling for Brandon Routh to be brought back. I thought he did a fine job in "Superman Returns" and was worthy of playing Kal-El again. If that will not be the case, maybe Hamm might be the way to go. It's a different direction, but they might not cast him because of future age considerations, if they are developing a trilogy. Remember, these films will be 3 years apart. Although, Hamm would be a better actor than the names that are being thrown around as possible wearers of the Blue Tights. Whomever they cast, I ask for 2 things: Bring back the "American Way" aspect (have some pride dammit!) and don't EFF with the costume!!

blee - 7/27/2010, 3:09 PM
I also think the story should be about Clark Kent already established as superman for a couples years now. That's what it seems like. kinda likethe old black and white spiderman tv show.
airbeyonder18 - 7/27/2010, 3:12 PM
Yes. I want him in as Superman. I've always imangined the Alex Ross version of Supes to be in the movies and this guy is the perfect actor to portray the Man of Steel.
Denn1s - 7/27/2010, 3:34 PM
i like him although he is kinda old. in the sequel he will be too old perhaps
blee - 7/27/2010, 3:39 PM
RDJ is older and is doing IM 1, 2,,3 and the Avengers. So I don't think age is a problem.
jusme6 - 7/27/2010, 3:58 PM
*snif* *snif* ah that's disgusting! Anyone else smell that? Smells like BULL SH*T!!!
AlexDeLarge87 - 7/27/2010, 4:52 PM

WheelJack - 7/27/2010, 4:56 PM
sweet supermans gonna be a blues (hockey) fan! (im from stl.)
UltimaRex - 7/27/2010, 5:04 PM
No. If Superman is supposed to at the beginning of his career in MOS, Hamm is too old. If they are casting Jor-El or there's a Kingdom Come movie in development we don't know about then hell yes. Otherwise, no.
Layperson - 7/27/2010, 5:17 PM
This is the best news I've heard on this site in weeks

ASSASSIN666 - 7/27/2010, 5:43 PM
F**king weak, and a total insult to all other people who have played Superman. Hamm is talented and geared for drama roles, not superhero roles.
Akercocke - 7/27/2010, 6:35 PM
I can't complain, but he needs to start pumping iron right now. Physically I think Joe Manganiello is perfect, but I'm not so sure if he'll be able to perform because Superman must command respect. Anyway, I trust the Nolans blindly so whoever they choose I'll agree.
Gearstation - 7/27/2010, 6:55 PM
Wasn't the 'Truth, Justice, and the American Way' phrase added later on to the Superman character in the radio serial broadcasts, and not even by the creators themselves, simply because it sounded dramatic? Superman should stand for more than just one countries political standing. He should be here for everyone on the entire planet. 'Truth and Justice' covers that just fine.
BigChief16 - 7/27/2010, 8:23 PM
I think that if they are going for a Superman who has already established his career, then this guy is perfect!!! @MarsAmbassador he really does make a good Clark Kent in the first picture
LP4 - 7/27/2010, 8:30 PM
John Hamm would be an EPIC choice. I want this next film to be where Supes had already long established himself, that way we can get more ACTIOn in this film. And i do agree with "BigChief16"...John Hamm is a perfect choice for that stage in Superman's heroic career. We don't really need a young actor like the other superhero franchises. Superman was never about "fitting in" or following the new-age styles. So giving Superman an older actor is a good way of showing just how different he is and shows his uniqueness.
kyle - 7/27/2010, 9:15 PM
the reason why this wud work is cus he's award winning, superman will already be who he is, and that it's jon hamm. [frick], i haven't watched the new premiere
KALel3412 - 7/27/2010, 9:20 PM
JOE MANGANIELLO or hamm and i will be happy
shahrazstate - 7/27/2010, 9:57 PM
He is a good actor but too old to play Superman now.
juggy4711 - 7/27/2010, 10:14 PM
Casting him could work but I seriously doubt WB would risk it.
blee - 7/27/2010, 10:19 PM
AGE IS NOT A FACTOR!!!!! people need to stop being so stupid. RDJ is older and Hugh Jackman is older and yet they can handle a frnchise and Jona Hamm cant?? The dude is still in his 30's!! He is the perfect choice for a mature/ Alex Ross superman. I would really love a new take on Superman and as him long established as Supes! Jon Hamm for Superman!

Gyms arent hidden in underground cities. Im sure he'll hit the gym when he finds out he's getting the role. Like evry other actor hired as a superhero. Like chris hemsworth as thor.
SuperGirl - 7/27/2010, 11:46 PM
Oooh, I should have saved my Jon Hamm comment for this thread. Well here it is pasted:

Jon Hamm will never accept the role of Superman.
Everyone in Hollywood believes he is on the fast track to the A-list.
His agent would jump on a live grenade before he allowed Hamm to kill his momentum by playing Superman.
Hollywood sees Superman as a very, very silly role.
Brandon Routh talked about this in an interview,
to explain why he didn't get the work his fans expected him to be offered,
after such a high profile role.
blee - 7/28/2010, 12:17 AM
@pure justice. How do you know this? are you his father?? lol. Anyone is capable of gaining muscle and losing weight. unless you have a condition. And just because you cant doesnt mean Hamm cant. It is physically possible.

@SuperGirl- I get your point but unless youve spoken to Hamm and his agent, i dont see how this is true. Unless theyve stated this before. I personally dont see why anyone would pass up playing Superman. Plus, Nolan may convince him by showing him an impressive script and a new version of Superman that isnt so "silly". If Nolan constructs the character in a more mature and deeper fashion, he may convince Jon Hamm to play the role. It all depends on what kind of Superman and story theyre doing.
JokeSonYou - 7/28/2010, 12:26 AM
*sigh* I'm convinced that most of you are idiots.

Screw Tom Welling!! Henry Cav...Who?! Too Old?! Sign this guy up, I say!!

We must think OUTSIDE the box people.. Outside of the box!!
JustinMSalvato - 7/28/2010, 3:18 AM

NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!!!!

He's a midget compared to the 6'4" Superman. Besides, this guy is fugly.
JustinMSalvato - 7/28/2010, 3:18 AM

marvel72 - 7/28/2010, 5:08 AM

AlexDeLarge87 - 7/28/2010, 7:02 AM
F*CK YOU TOM WELLING!!:D lol

JON HAMM IS THE RIGHT GUY FOR THE JOB!!

Heath Ledger has proofed himself
Hugh Jackman has proofed himself
Robert Downey Jr. has proofed himself

BACKDOORCHIJAD - 7/28/2010, 8:41 AM
I think any actor would kill to work with Nolan.
Samvi - 7/28/2010, 8:44 AM
Jon Hamm = Superman/Alex Roos and John Byrne!
austen - 7/28/2010, 9:56 AM
john Hamm is superman. Cast him WB. NOW.
zephyr - 7/28/2010, 10:29 AM
No way. Got to diasgree. He's too old and by the time they make a third Supes film he'll be pushing 50. So no thanks. Try again.
JokeSonYou - 7/28/2010, 10:40 AM
Not only are most of you idiots, but apparently you're also mentally retarded. Seriously, it's a miracle that you guys can wipe your own asses let alone type.

@ Pure Justice: 6'...to 6'4"?! You know Superman's stats like that? You're Kal-el's physical trainer?!Please.. stop typing, you're stupidity is showing. I don't think the movie goer cares about 4 frick'n inches, which a camera can hide pretty well. Steroids.. build mass... not height.Infact a steroid user actually declines in height and I'm pretty sure anyone can build enough mass on their own. By your logic I can tell you never lifted a weight in your life, other than 20.oz of Mountain Dew goodness. Get laid moron.

@Jahozafat: YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Go [frick] yourself Tom Welling!!

@ David Nichols: Are you an art critic?! Is that your professional opinion?! Cuz' I know quite a few art critics that will tell anyone that Alex Ross is one of the best artists out there right now.
"Not even realisitic".. Now I know you're full of shit. First of all, it's "realistic". Secondly, Ross works with real models and photo references, like most great artists do, maybe thats why some paintings seem like they share the same features to you.. although I don't see it. Lastly, He's painting superheroes you schmuck!!! Seriously.. get your head out of your ass.

I don't know what is it with you guys and Henry Cavill.. but I've seen his work.. and I don't think he'd fit Superman at all. I would like someone who could act.. but what would you sorry sacks of fleah know about that.

GLGeek - 7/28/2010, 12:25 PM
It is completely ironic to me that we fanboys, who master suspension-of-disbelief in order to enjoy these stories, get caught up in "size matters" conversations. Now, I'm not saying you can't have your front-runner wish-list of actors, but to say that an actor would fail at a role... just strikes me as short-sighted. They're ACTORS. Playing parts is their job. Selling the impossible is what they do. Not only that, but great movies mean great teams making those movies. From directors and cinemaphotgraphers to boom mikes and pages. Hamm can do this, but if he doesn't have a great team, no one could. Jennifer Garner COULD have made a great Elektra... and look how that turned out.

But back to Mr. Hamm. This is Superman. The FATHER of today's comic book & CBM characters. Age don't mean spit. Hell, I think he SHOULD be a bit older. Baby faced Routhe did not convince me to respect him as the penultimate hero in the DC universe. Hamm can. Will he? I sure hope so.
JokeSonYou - 7/28/2010, 1:57 PM
@ Pure Justice.. Try Dying. It suits you.
Anthonypilone01 - 7/29/2010, 1:20 PM
No, no, no, no ,NO!!!! Look, I know
Jon Hamm's a good actor. But COME ON, he looks NOTHING LIKE SUPERMAN.
DAMNIT, SERIOUSLY!!! TOM WELLING SHOULD BE THE MAN!
Welling has been familiar with the character many years in the huge hit show "Smallville", he has lots of experience and becoming a great actor over the years and building his character and he even looks the part, as well. I can't think of anyone better than Tom Welling to pull it off - Not Routh, not Jon Hamm, Tom Welling!!! It would do justice if he would get the part and it even said that he would love to play the part in the big screen and always been opened to it. FOR GODS' SAKES, HE'S EARNED IT!!!! I don't care what of these ignorant people say because their full of negative bullshit. No Jon Hamm, please! TOM WELLING FOR SUPERMAN!!!
TraEL - 7/30/2010, 8:05 AM
**Clapping hands and jumping up and down like a little prissy boy**

If you don't hear the Superman theme in your head when you see Hamm you're fibbing.

I've been behind the Jon Hamm for Superman ever since early talks of the reboot. I was just watching Mad Men last night and pondering what an excellent Superman he could become. When I see him, I instantly hear the Superman theme and always viewed his mature look as MY Superman I always pictured.

JOM HAMM FOR SUPERMAN!
Angelus - 7/30/2010, 11:48 AM
@ Dave Nichols - I almost completely agree with you but my list has Rick Malambri at second and Cavill at third. Josh Hartnett

Now when it comes to bulking up its not that hard, especially in Hollywood. Steroids and doctors following you 24 hours a day etc. I dont doubt Hollywood got that down when actors are bulking up but I somewhat doubt Bale doing steroids but still. Anyone can get big in Hollywood. I think Rick Malambri got the looks but I dont know his acting skills. I dont want this movie to be a flop!

BMP!
