MAN OF STEEL: Jimmy or Jenny?

With less than six months to go until Man of Steel hits, many fans have been wondering about Jimmy Olsen. Where is he? Why we have not seen anything about him? Well, it might be because there's no "him". HE is actually HER. Will we see a female version of Jimmy Olsen in Man of Steel?

According to IMDB, unknown actress Rebecca Buller is playing Jenny Olsen in the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel.

IMDB is not the most reliable source in the world, but, watching the trailer, the girl running from the bursting building alongside Laurence Fishburne's Perry White looks a lot like Buller.

Change can annoy some purists fans - and even those who are not as demanding - but the controversy raises an interesting debate about sexism in comic books and comic books adaptations. We're already familiar with the ethnicity changes in comic book movies, but what about the change of gender of a character? Is it too much? Could this be a reflection of modern society trying to fix past mistakes with regard to sexual segregation in old social orders? Or is it irrelevant? Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Michael Shannon, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner and Ayelet Zurer, Man of Steel is set to hit theatres on June 14, 2013.

BS until confirmed.
Dev7 - 1/21/2013, 5:17 AM
I won't be surprised by this gender change for Jimmy, after all it is Nolan we're dealing with here.
Spideyguy94 - 1/21/2013, 5:40 AM
Very strange choice if true, although its IMDB so It's most likely bullshit.
ElShumway - 1/21/2013, 5:41 AM
It's less than 5 months not 6. Learn how to count. And I don't care, Jimmy is an annoying side character anyway so they might as well turn him into something that's easy on the eyes. That said, it's IMDb, so take it with a huge grain of salt.
ManOfKrypton - 1/21/2013, 6:03 AM
Doesn't bother me, Jimmy's only a side character!
MisterMoustache - 1/21/2013, 6:04 AM

@GordonShumway

In my country, the movie comes out in july. But sorry for the misunderstanding anyway.

Osirisno6 - 1/21/2013, 6:04 AM
I cant say that I care much... Especially after the change on Perry White, I am ready to see lots of different stuff... Some aspects of Superman had to change to make the movie and the character more acceptable... My primary concern is about WHO will Julian Richings ("Death" from Supernatural) portray in the movie... It has been about a year since he stated that he is in the movie, but he is still uncredited... Really big mystery which intrigues me... All we know is his description about being in a scene on Kryptonian soil, along with Crowe and Shannon... So it has to be Jax Ur, Zor El or Brain.IA.C.
Facade - 1/21/2013, 6:08 AM
Dear Lord, this can't be so...Bruce Wayne MUST be in JL...uh, wait, wrong thread ;P
DukeAcureds - 1/21/2013, 6:09 AM
Wh...?
xstryker - 1/21/2013, 6:11 AM
Amazing, I expected massive fanboy rage. Glad this isn't raising much more than a shrug.
MisterMoustache - 1/21/2013, 6:19 AM
Well, it's never a big problem replacing a clumsy nerd with a hot brunette.
ElShumway - 1/21/2013, 6:21 AM
@MisterMoustache - Ok, in that case, sorry - on both accounts, lol! I'd be in pain if I had to wait a month after it comes out to see it.
MrNiklander - 1/21/2013, 6:57 AM
Ι am fine with it
MrNiklander - 1/21/2013, 6:57 AM
But she might be playing a rival of Lois Lane
batfan175 - 1/21/2013, 7:15 AM
Even if it is true why would this be bad? He's a secondary character in the comics anyway. They've given you black and Asian Norse Gods so....
DCjohnny - 1/21/2013, 8:04 AM
who knows whether she is jimmy Olson female version or not... I don't care ...
MisterMoustache - 1/21/2013, 8:32 AM
I have absolutely no problem with Heimdall being black in Thor. It's Marvel's interpretation of the mythology, not the actual mythology.
TheDARKestKNIGHT - 1/21/2013, 8:33 AM
Honestly I don't care much for the character of Jimmy anyway. Not a lot of depth to the character in my opinion.
Shamo - 1/21/2013, 8:38 AM
Jimmy Olsen has fans?
tazmaniak - 1/21/2013, 8:43 AM
@ManOfKrypton, I don't think that's true, at all. He's not just a side character. He's Superman and Clark Kent's closest friend. Not only that, he's one of the few non-powered supporting characters to have his own series. One that lasted for 20 years.

Not only that, he's notable as the first character to encounter and interact with the Fourth World characters, as well as Cadmus.
jimoakley666 - 1/21/2013, 8:44 AM
And the point of this is...? And with it being Hack Snyder she'll probably spend the majority of the movie wearing next to nothing for no reason what so ever.
FrankGarret - 1/21/2013, 8:46 AM
Somehow, I'm more concerned that she isn't a redhead than that she's a she.
BatsFan - 1/21/2013, 8:50 AM
Michael Cera or Jesse Eisenberg for Jimmy.
Tajin88 - 1/21/2013, 8:51 AM
The more women are in this movie, the better it is.
Christuffer - 1/21/2013, 8:51 AM
Fail, or Jimmy's sister
SigmaCenturion - 1/21/2013, 8:52 AM
Well hollywood fails at doing the source material justice so why not just make shit up it seems to be what they are good at because they can't follow guidelines.
superotherside - 1/21/2013, 8:55 AM
I hope she's Jimmy's sister, it would be sad to not include Jimmy, of course they could introduce him later as the new photographer Jenny's brother Jimmy.
Bobbywoodhogan - 1/21/2013, 9:09 AM
I don't give a monkeys if they make Jimmy a girl but if she s this universe version if .jimmy it seems like change for change sakes not for a good reason. I suppose she coud end up like Fimmy from Smallville.
JatevinM - 1/21/2013, 9:10 AM
I seriously dont understand why it would matter and if that was the route they went with Jimmy I wouldn't have picked her as the actress.
RorMachine - 1/21/2013, 9:19 AM
Honestly don't give a damn.
Optimus83 - 1/21/2013, 9:27 AM
is a joke. ...RIGHT???
Nomis1800 - 1/21/2013, 9:29 AM
Why eigenlijk not?
Spectre94 - 1/21/2013, 9:33 AM
I don't care too much, to be honest. As long as the movie is good
DayOldDaddy - 1/21/2013, 9:36 AM
I found that she appears to be almost smiling for most of this shot, where she's running away from the collapsing building with Perry "White"
TheTank - 1/21/2013, 9:38 AM
She's prob a relative of jimmy or something, I think we are going to see the very beginnings of the daily planet crew and honestly I don't think Clark is going to be employed until the very end of the movie. I don't think they would cut Jimmy out, he's not a bullshit charecter, and he's always been a very big part of the superman canon from near the start.
MisterMoustache - 1/21/2013, 9:40 AM
I think it's a good change. Nobody cares for Jimmy and we're living in a world where women are winning more and more space, so I think this change reflects the current world, besides functioning as a response to the sexism of the 30's and 40's society - when the first Superman's stories were published. Maybe, if it's true, she's not even an important or strong character, but just the fact of being a girl working at the Daily Planet and having some relevance inside the Superman mythology is already a cool thing.

What concerns me about the female representation in Man of Steel is Nolan's involvement. I think his movies are filled with underlying misogyny disguised as "respect to women". Just watch Inception. Ellen Page's character is absolutely asexual. She dresses aseptically like the men, and that makes her one of "the good guys". But Marion Cotillard is the villain, she's evil (as her name), and she wears long red dresses and strong lipstick. That's how Nolan portrays women: their best qualities comes from their identification with men. If they actually show some femininity, they're evil. The sexualization of women seems to be a crime to Nolan. That's why, I believe, Rachel and Harvey acts more as good friends than lovers in The Dark Knight. She can't be tough and be a sexual being at the same time.

On the other hand, besides the whole Sucker Punch controversy (btw, I don't think it's sexist), Snyder directed some really good female characters, specially in Dawn of the Dead, wich had a pretty remarkable female protagonist. So, I don't know, let's see.
Jolt17 - 1/21/2013, 9:43 AM
OK, no one cares about Jimmy, indeed, but I still hope he'll still be Jimmy. So, this lady could be Jimmy's relative, or maybe not an Olsen at all. I don't mind if he she ends up being "Jenny," but I prefer it being faithful to the comics...um, on this one, at least.
Grimfoe - 1/21/2013, 9:43 AM
I JUST CAME HERE TO SAY SCREW GRIF WHOEVER THIS NERD IS AND SCREW ALL OF YOU NERDS THAT WORSHIP HIM

ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/21/2013, 10:02 AM
