Terry Gilliam Trashes Zack Snyder's Watchmen

"They lost me by the end, frankly, but it was certainly looking better than what I was going to do!"
Monty Python alum, Terry Gilliam, spent years trying to get his version of "Watchmen" made into a movie before deciding that the book wasn't filmable. So what did he make of Zack Snyder's attempt? Not much...

It got trashed, but there are great sequences in there, but the overall effect is kind of turgid in a certain way. I started putting it down to… you know, in the comic book, or graphic novel… They're still comic books to me (laughs)… It's like the Comedian's coffin is going into the grave with the stars and stripes on top of it and reading it in the comic book it's three panels, boom, boom and boom. On film "hhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmm…"

The pace is wrong. I was glad our version didn't get done, the one that Charles McKeown and I had wrote, because we had reduced it down to about two hours and five minutes I think and we lost so much. Comedian was cut down to next to nothing. So [Zack Snyder] did a good job, but it just felt… I also thought "The Incredibles" had kind of [frick]ed it for him... [S]o much of that material had been in a quarry that everybody had been digging goodies out of and suddenly you get lost. I think "Watchmen" really bothered me, because I thought it should be better. It was all there. It looked right, but to me it was pace. It didn't have pace. It needed a bit more quirkiness in there. Dr. Manhattan was getting boring, frankly, and then Ozymandias by the end I thought "Oh, come on!" They lost me by the end, frankly, but it was certainly looking better than what I was going to do! (laughs)

Hes right about the pacing!

DIRECTOR CUT aint bad, it is THE closest thing to a true adaption that we will ever get unfortunately. i love GILLEM and his take and ARONOFSKIS were the two most interesting trys that i have heard
dellamorte1872 - 8/24/2009, 10:41 AM
FINALLY! im really glad im not the only one who thought this movie was a bomb. A big budget, well crafted and poorly executed bomb
fotc - 8/24/2009, 10:48 AM
Nothing he says is wrong! The ending was very rushed and Ozymandiaz really let me down. But it didn't spoil my enjoyment of an amazing movie.
Rorschach01 - 8/24/2009, 10:48 AM
@Ror: Hell yeah it didn't!!! If I made the movie it would have pleased everyone and would have been 4 1/2 hours.
TheCritic17 - 8/24/2009, 10:52 AM
man i never read the graphic novel of this but the movie was amazin imo the actin was on point and the effects looked real as hell the music was way good as well i think its one of the best MOVIES in the past decade to come out not just comic book movie
SabretoothTiger - 8/24/2009, 10:57 AM
I liked for the most part. It did have some problems though.
TheBat - 8/24/2009, 10:59 AM
Glad to find that I wasn't the only one disappointed with the Watchmen movie. So much of the movie is spot-on right that I really want to like the film, but I just can't, for reasons I've expounded upon numerous times on this site. It's interesting to hear this take from another director who tried to bring the comic books to the big screen.
comicb00kguy - 8/24/2009, 11:01 AM
every movie has problems. this was way closer to the source material, and no plot holes what so ever, yet most think of the dark knight as the best comic movie ever made?? doesn't make too much sense...
CorndogBurglar - 8/24/2009, 11:03 AM
Disappointing to say the least. I took my wife to see that movie and she was not happy.
SuperPoweredMikeL - 8/24/2009, 11:05 AM
I would have liked it to be more true to story from beginning to end but after watching the movie a few times I am pleased. It's not likely anyone else would have done better. The beauty of a comic is the reader contols the pace. You may be enthralled racing along to read/see what happens next or be captured by the artwork of a panel.
undeadpool - 8/24/2009, 11:07 AM
DIRECTORS CUT is the way to truly experience it, the theaterical version sucks @SUPERPOWEREDMIKEL. i have my own problems with WATCHMEN, i deffinetly have 3 major ones! but IT IS THE TRUEST ADAPTION OF WATCHMEN WE WILL SEE! short of the great and powerful ALAN MOORE getting involved. sure i wish some things at least were done differently here and there but it was the ultimate "love letter" to the original source material.
dellamorte1872 - 8/24/2009, 11:10 AM
An BRAZIL was a masterpiece.... NOT!

WATCHMEN was the comic book movie of the DECADE!!!

Whats TERRY now 70??? Course he friggin' gonna trash it lol!

WATCHMEN was near PERFECT!!!

; )

LEEE777 - 8/24/2009, 11:18 AM
Eh, I wouldn't say he was "trashing" it. But yeah, I agree. I mean, I didn't like it as much as a bunch of you, but I didn't hate it. I think it's an incredibly difficult story to accurately translate, but they did a good job with it.
Bamf7 - 8/24/2009, 11:24 AM
Actually Lee, Brazil is a masterpiece!:)
Rorschach01 - 8/24/2009, 11:28 AM
He wasnt trashing it and he admits his would of been worse :)
teabag - 8/24/2009, 11:34 AM
Coming from the guy that said Watchmen was "unfilmable" I'd say this is a compliment. And coming from the guy who made Tideland, I'd say thank god he didn't make Watchmen.

I took my wife to see Watchmen as well. She hadn't read the book. And she F'ing LOVED it.
gibbyblaylock - 8/24/2009, 11:35 AM
I wouldnt say that he's trashing Watchmen as such - just giving his opinion on what he would have done differently!

I actually find it hard to agree with him - even after watching The Directors Cut I still wouldnt say i got bored (though 3hrs did feel a bit too long - though i find 3hrs too long for any movie) As for the ending, i actually thought it was better than the graphic novel! :)
joshw24 - 8/24/2009, 11:40 AM
Watchmen is NOT for everyone. Btw watchmen dc was awesome!
SHHH - 8/24/2009, 11:50 AM
@ Teabag nice avatar... ballichinian!

I thought that Watchmen was great just that everyone expected lots of action like 300 but Zack Snyder wanted to do something different.
Rokrad - 8/24/2009, 12:02 PM
hes just giving honest critique. i give him credit for that. i enjoyed the movie immensely and it sounds like he liked it too. as teabag said he admitted that his would have been worse. so i give him credit for that too.
superdog - 8/24/2009, 12:03 PM
He wasn't trashing the movie, he's expressing his observation. At least he read the comics. Quit being sensitive people.
SirPrize - 8/24/2009, 12:04 PM
It was okay, but I found the movie to be slow compared to the GN. I love the GN. But it wasn't a horrible movie. The comedian was gr8. The guy who played Ozy was horrible though...
InstigatorGIRL - 8/24/2009, 12:10 PM
GN was outstanding.
SirPrize - 8/24/2009, 12:13 PM
ya i agree that ozy was like the only part i didnt like about the movie whoever did dr. manhattans voice was perfect though and comedian was one of the best parts of the movie
SabretoothTiger - 8/24/2009, 12:18 PM
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I for one liked a lot. Can hardly wait for december when the Ultimate Edition comes out. And then, this movie will go down in the history of cinema as the longest comic book movie. It will probably clock around 210 minutes. Take that TDK.

@teabag: from what movie is your avatar? it's driving me crazy not remembering. could you give a crazy man a hand?
Helldemon - 8/24/2009, 12:40 PM
Helldemon@ Men in Black 2 :)
teabag - 8/24/2009, 12:48 PM
OZY + SILK SPECTRE II as well as NIXON (LOL) casting sucked!
dellamorte1872 - 8/24/2009, 12:52 PM
Um why is this being discussed 6 months later? Whats the point. LOL.

Why so sensitive?
SirPrize - 8/24/2009, 1:01 PM
@SirPrize Why so serious?

Need help! I heard there was gonna be a Tales of the Black Freighter version of Watchmen with 15 - 25 extra minutes? is this TRUE?

SHHH - 8/24/2009, 1:02 PM
good Rorschach = DarthMulder was satisfied.

BUT they did leave a lot out, some of which I would have liked to see left in. They messed up Ozymandias, and I agree with what this guy said about the pacing.

There were things about it that everyone else liked but I hated. I hated the music. I don't like folkly hippie or christian stuffs like Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen.

So there were things I liked and there were things I didn't. It sounds like that's how it is for a lot of people.
DarthMulder - 8/24/2009, 1:07 PM
wow where were all of u watchmen movie hater hiding hwen i was outcasted for not liking it?!?!?! lol atleast i know im not crazy now
fotc - 8/24/2009, 1:17 PM
SHHH@ yap. it sure is. like said before, it should be at around 210 minutes with the aditional footage that came with the director's cut and the inclusion of "Tales of the Black Freighter". This should be: Watchmen Ultimate Edition, and Rorschach is supposed to *** again around december.

teabg@ thanks man. you sure know how to put someone out of his misery ;)
Helldemon - 8/24/2009, 1:28 PM
SHHH - Obviously, it's serious when there are sensitive people. =P
SirPrize - 8/24/2009, 1:54 PM
I actually left about half way through the movie when I went to see it in the Theatre.
Jojo Risin - 8/24/2009, 2:05 PM
Everything about the movie was great but the end/climax was a bit of a let down. Everything up to that point deserved something better.
Ryguy88 - 8/24/2009, 3:01 PM
Terry Gilliam stops hating cause you didn't get to do it.
Bandrews1 - 8/24/2009, 3:08 PM
I will admit that I wasnt amazed by Watchmen but I didnt grow up with it, thats probably why. But I liked watching the movie and I would watch it again because it was an intelligent movie with a great plot, impressive action and it had brilliant actors in it. Now I liked Wolverine too but then again I grew up with X-Men, I get it hard to hate anything X-Men related but even though Hugh and Liev were brilliant in it, everything else was disappointing because no effort was put into it. Comic book movies should be made special like their source material, not treated like a generic action movie
dancingmonkey08 - 8/24/2009, 3:12 PM

Now on to the subject of watchmen. I thought the movie was pretty good and enjoyed it was very faithful to novel which I consider in any movie essential to a movies success and box office numbers saldly watchmen did not deliver that 85 million domestically and making more world wide which I consider odd.

on the flip side I enjoyed all the actors and actress portyals of thier charatcers lots of gore nudity fighting this movie had it all. anyway I got to goy guys I'll be bak tommorow and lock forward to chatting with you guys tommorow.

and like general zod always says "Kneel before Zod" tony out

DarthKyrat1 - 8/24/2009, 3:35 PM
whoops a little mistake in my paragraph where I was talking about the watchmen box office numbers. the box office numbers are as follows $185,248,060 (worldwide). 130 $ million dollar budget domestic gross 85 million which isn't that much for a big blockbuster movie "tony out, peace and love lol"!

DarthKyrat1 - 8/24/2009, 3:40 PM

if you didn't like the book - or appreciate it for what is was - then you didn't dig the movie.

Gilliam should learn to speak - go watch his last movie Tideland.

he should be embarassed - that was the worst film I have ever seen. ever.
Keven - 8/24/2009, 3:49 PM
I knew NOTHING about watchmen before i saw it and i thought it was a BRILLIANTLY well done, it had a story that forced you to watch it to the end to realised who killed the comedian, i enjoyed it so much i bought it on blue ray as well and it looks fantastic!
rosco71 - 8/24/2009, 3:53 PM
i think it was good....rather as good as they could do but what was lost was ozzy!!! it doesnt show him much, then all of a sudden hes the main villian.but its like that in the book...so thats not snyders fault. the squid would of been good but, i liked the movie over all. plus the blue ray kicks major @ss!!!!!
ProfOJ - 8/24/2009, 4:33 PM

DarthKyrat1 - 8/24/2009, 4:48 PM
I thought it was a good movie. Top 5 comic films of all time. It had problems it wasn't perfect, but what film is. It was still very good.
stupify_me - 8/24/2009, 4:54 PM
Watchmen- really good movie, much better novel. For people who never got to read the book, it is a master work. For anyone who seen the movie without reading the book it defines the purest superhero based movie along with Batman Begins. Win win either way, the book brings everything to life, the movie begs the question what would you do if the choice was yours? just in a more simple form.
ASSASSIN666 - 8/24/2009, 5:28 PM
I liked the message at the end. In Ozy's attempt to "heal the world," he condemned the innocent - basic evil guy mentality. But for Rorschach to realize that people needed to be told the truth, there's a hint of Libertarianism there - people need to be judged on their own merits and ALLOWED to do harm. Murder is murder, no matter WHAT the intent. Besides, he does seem to enjoy justice too much to allow the world to be that peaceful.
diggity97 - 8/24/2009, 5:34 PM
Oh, and by "allowed" I don't mean it's ok. Just that freedom is better than forced happiness.
diggity97 - 8/24/2009, 5:36 PM
Watchmen is an extremely hard comic to translate to film...if you included everything from the GN then the movie would be 6 hours long. I don't think it was too long I think it was too short. The pacing was a little off in places but I know Terry's version would have been awful...he is suited for different movie ideas.

I think its a masterpiece, myself! I feel that its better even than the Dark Knight and Spidey 2 and is the best Comic Book movie ever (Even with Ozy not up to par--every movie has it's flaws.). Haley as Rorschac was incredible!
DDD - 8/24/2009, 5:40 PM
That's the beauty of Watchmen, you get to see the views of extreme justice, cynicism, salvation, and whether a lie or truth is more powerful. All sides have both pros and cons, but which side tips the scale and at what expense?
ASSASSIN666 - 8/24/2009, 5:42 PM
I knew Haley was good when I saw him in the Bad News Bears, too bad It took hollywood almost losing him to regular jobs to find him all over again with roles in Little Children and All The Kings Men. Haley playing Rorschach was the equivalent to Mickey Rourke playing Marv in Sin City- f**king perfect!
ASSASSIN666 - 8/24/2009, 5:51 PM

"@ Instigator girl nice avatar very sexy just the way I like my girls lol"

Haha, yeah dude, personally i like em when they aint sexy!;)..only kiddin, welcome to the site..watch this one ladies!!!

Rorschach01 - 8/24/2009, 5:55 PM
As a movie, it was phenomenal. For an average person who never read Watchmen, it'll be a great experience.

From a comic fan's perspective, it DID leave alot to be desired. Dr. Manhattan wasn't merely distanced from/losing humanity, their rendition of him was fairly lifeless. Ozymandias was a stiff board. Plain and simple. he had a rod up his as, and lacked the smug charm that he had in the graphic novel. Still upset about "The Crimebusters" being switched to "The Watchmen", and the lack of Captain Metropolis and all of the other capes.

But, the movie WOULD have been too long. And other than a comic fan, NO ONE would have enjoyed THAT long of a movie... Still wanted the squid, tho, lol.

@Teabag... I'm liking the Ballchinian pic. Works well.
BaronBubba - 8/24/2009, 6:23 PM
Terry Gillian is a poor bastard.
The best movies of Gillian was in the 20 century.
OSCURO - 8/24/2009, 7:07 PM
Yes BRAZIL and THE BARON MUNCHHAUSEN are masterpiece, but WATCHMEN too.
OSCURO - 8/24/2009, 7:13 PM
Watchmen was so amazing, i almost cried at the end. Second favorite movie of all time
Fartman - 8/24/2009, 8:06 PM
pacing and the MUSIC sux in watchmen other den that it could have been better if they fix the pacing and the MUSIC
xXkryptoniteXx - 8/24/2009, 9:21 PM
I agree with gilliam 100%. It was a good spectacle, as someone above said amazing effects and musical score but there was some undefinable factor that got lost in the translation from print to film. It just seemed flat somehow, everything moved to fast and the development was nonexistent, which is a major fault because at its heart Watchmen is a mystery thriller and with out proper development there is neither thrill nor mystery.
thwhtGuardian - 8/24/2009, 10:30 PM
BRAZIL and THE BARON MUNCHHAUSEN 'are' masterpieces...12 Monkeys was also not bad.
Jojo Risin - 8/25/2009, 12:23 AM

Tony out peace and love
DarthKyrat1 - 8/25/2009, 1:55 PM
I think before criticising others work, you gotta look into yours, because gilliams last movie, like brothers grim weren`t that good, the story was boring and no comments about the effects. The best thing in that movie was Monica Bellucci. Oh yeah!
loquitofili - 8/25/2009, 4:28 PM
The Watchmen film was not a masterpiece. Visually it was impressive and the cast was good - that's it, the film needed a better Director.
SoulAllFlush - 8/25/2009, 4:44 PM
He seems conflicted about Watchmen "the Movie" vs. Watchmen "the Comic Book" at the very least, which is very human of him. Figure in his prior involvement with trying to bring Watchmen to the big screen only complicates his view on Zack Snyder's take as well. I enjoyed the Director's Cut of the film on Blu-ray (missed the theatrical, sorry), but it can't match the depth of Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons work. There were some very satisfying sequences in the film, where you felt really good about the comic being "brought to life," but could any Watchmen movie match the comic?
dragonJP - 8/25/2009, 8:51 PM
Here's the flippin point guy! I remember a day when all young fertile comic book movie lovers were in a sort of Spring Chickens Heaven .... looking toe wards the day when our darkest fantasies and brightest hopes might be met one on top of the other like a Cheer Leader Pyramid all naked and sweaty. That was a dream we all share. A dream Called Wolverine ; Origins. :( Brighter days. But what now , what now if we were to discuss what we all knew and loved as we grew into our fullness, at one time wishing to tear through the flesh of another for the sake of right! When we all reveled in the joy of the unabated animal within!!! and the day not too far off when we walked out holding our tits and our testicles in our hands asking why, nay.... Sobbing WWHHYY!!!!!!!!? Why Wolverine!?

Know my pain ... for the summer of 09 is marred unto even in the Heavens where gods retreat into Hades to consider what they have wrought!

The fox execs and their ilk are but minions of death.
