Gavin Hood Initially Worried About Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool

The director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine says that Reynolds turned into a "very appealing package."
Gavin Hood, director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine confessed to being nervous about letting Ryan Reynolds perform some of his own sword stunts in portraying the "Merc with a Mouth," Deadpool:

"His early efforts were somewhat suspect, so we were quite worried, because those swords were twirling and I thought he was going to cut his arms off. In a matter of weeks in was spinning those swords like a pro.

"He’s very talented and very pleasant which makes him a very appealing package."

He should have been more worried about sticking to Deadpool's real origin.
MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 1:19 PM
Reynolds was pitch-perfect in Wolverine as Wade. There really isn't anyone better to play Deadpool.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 1:20 PM
I think Ryan Reynolds should be Deadpool. =P
BmanHall - 9/28/2009, 1:20 PM
Ah well, good for him doing his own stunts!

Im still not convinced that Fox wont [frick] his solo movie up though! :(

u gotta luv reynolds!:) but why is this top news?

woo hoo!
jallanr - 9/28/2009, 1:20 PM
Gavin Hood must be a tard-fish! Almost everyone's fancast for Deadpool was Reynolds. How then was he "suspect" at first?
Phinehas - 9/28/2009, 1:23 PM
What happen to the Ghost Rider 2 article?
BmanHall - 9/28/2009, 1:25 PM
the 'suspect' part is referring to his sword stunt only.

this article has been blown out of proportion to imply that Hood thinks Reynolds wasn't initially the best for the character overall - he's just talking about the sword stunt.

jesus.
Keven - 9/28/2009, 1:26 PM
@Phinehas: Your argument is totally illogical. Just because fans think an actor should play a certain character doesn't mean that actor has the right stuff to make the character come to life.
Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 1:27 PM
The only hope i have that fox might not mess this up, is that it's the same company that gave me the original star wars trilogy and the simpsons. that's it.
supermarioworldE - 9/28/2009, 1:30 PM
This fills me with confidence on his GL role. To go from "suspect" to "pro" in a week takes dedication! OK, so we should take that with a pinch of salt but he still clearly has passion and drive for comic heroes, I can't see him letting us down with Hal.

Phinehas - I think he meant Ryans sword skills were "suspect" not his character portrayal.
Ron - 9/28/2009, 1:32 PM

I think Ryan will be a great Hal Jordan. He's a huge fan of comic books, he's a great actor, and he's got Martin Campbell directing him. Sounds awesome to me!

And I also think Hood was only talking about the sword stunts, not Ryan's performance.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 1:35 PM

MultiPurposePoni, Hey bro, if you go back and reread Deadpool's origin's again, I'm sure you'll notice the similarities in it and the movie. True, it is a victim of poor adaptation, but not as bad as most people immediately perceive. Deadpool wasn't treated none to fairly, but that was nothing compared to how much they warped Silverfox. Only thing they didn't change about her was the name.

Phin, I think he's referring to the whole aspect of Reynolds being a funny man and pretty boy and wondering if he could handle the physical aspect of the role, which clearly turned out to be an unfounded worry, as Reynolds whipping and whirling those swords was quite skillful and badass. I remember wondering the same thing initially, if Reynolds could pull of the physical phenom of Wade's gun and sword play. It was great to see I worried for nothing.
TheMyth - 9/28/2009, 1:47 PM
I really don't think it's favortism...I really don't know anybody here and a lot of times when I contribute my stuff it makes it to the front page. But I took the time to contact someone and find out EXACTLY what they want. None of us work here, it's all voluntary. It's not a big deal to find out how to do something correctly if you want to do it. You can't do it on your own terms and expect someone to accept it. Good grief.
Bamf7 - 9/28/2009, 1:47 PM
Dr. Donald Draper:
Perhaps you oughta get a refund on your doctorate because my statement wasn't illogical. It was unsound. Secondly, my premise that fans can detect a suitable actor is also reasonable. GEE...I wonder why one wouldn't trust producers in casting...hmmm.

Shaman - 9/28/2009, 2:00 PM
@Myth Oh I agree (as does Deadpool's creator) that what was done in the movie can easily play into his original story line. I'm a BIG Deadpool fan (we even have a poster of the dirty ol' merc up in our armory) and that's why I actually DON'T want to see him in his own film right now. Here's why:

1. Deadpool is NOT a hero. Never was, never will be. He might do heroic things every now and then, but his motivations are never moral. So if he's the anti-hero. . who's the hero?

2. In the comics Deadpool communicates with first person narrative, outward speech, thought bubbles and (sometimes) spiral-notebook notes. There is no way that you can translate that to film without being campy or confusing to a general audience.

3. A Deadpool film must be Rated R. Because using @$%?! just won't make sense in a movie.

4. FOX is producing it. so I will most likely follow suit of their other Marvel properties. . . I'd rather perform my own colonoscopy

But anywho, I have total confidence that this'll be a great movie. I mean, how can FOX mess up an action comedy about a wise-cracking ninja? That definitely sounds like it would be up their alley.

Also, I'd like to have a Miley Cyrus to play Squirrel Girl and have a cameo in either this or in Iron Man 3.

You gotta admit, it's a pretty perfect fit. And if you can't, well then you're just plain NUTS!

SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 2:12 PM
Why Jensen Ackles Could Never Be Captain America:

1) Physical stature is not comparative to Cap's comic book depictions.
2) A TV actor has little chance of starring in a $100+ million franchise film, i.e., he's not famous enough to share the stage with RDJ, Sam Jackson and Ed Norton.

And, personally, I think he looks like a pussy and would never follow him into battle.
Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 2:17 PM
@SirPrize - Wow...That's [frick]ed up! But, funny. Lol!

SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 2:20 PM
1) Hardly any actor has the physical stature of Cap. If they do, they're probably wrestlers. Ackles is in great shape, and is 6'1", only an inch shorter than Cap from the comics.

2) Chris Hemsworth was a TV actor, and Kenneth Branagh/Marvel seem to think he can share the stage with them. Also, I would think acting ability is more important than level of fame, wouldn't you agree?
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 2:21 PM
@Draper: I can understand your first two points. . .

But when you say you "would never follow him into battle" I just have to ask. . who WOULD you follow?

MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 2:22 PM
I wouldn't follow anybody into battle. Not even Ackles. I'm 6'6" and I'll eclipse his little ass and get shot in the process. I'll stay in my bunker and read Hustler. Sorry! I only have enough baby oil for one person.
SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 2:24 PM
@Tyler: I hate to agree with Draper, but I agree that Ackles is just too thin. He would need to pack on about 50 pounds of muscle to come close.

And, Hemsworth just got a high-profile opening role in Star Trek.

Think of this:

"And now for the stars of The Avengers, let's welcome Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, and...and...Jensen Ackles?"
Brent Sprecher - 9/28/2009, 2:25 PM

Fartman - 9/28/2009, 2:29 PM
They have enough time to pic a guy for Captain America. I honestly can see Patrick Wilson or Leo DiCaprio getting it. Ackles looks to much like a frat boy.

Packing on muscle is fairly easy these days. Look how Jackman looked for the Wolverine Whorigins and Bale in Batman. They need to pick one and get him on a meal plan and get him in the gym.

high five to a fellow Sooners fan.
SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 2:29 PM
Ackles isn't really thin. Pretty much any actor would have to pack on major muscle for Cap, even Brad Pitt, who I remember you voted for Brent.

Leo is too small, his voice is all wrong, and I just can't see him as Cap at all. I know he is a fantastic actor, but he is wrong for Cap.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 2:31 PM
@Fartman: Believe me, I've been looking for news! There's nothing happening in CBM's right now. It must be the deflation following the Disney/Marvle and DC Entertainment news war that was going on for a couple weeks.

@Tyler: I'm not exactly pro-Brad Pitt for Cap, I just think, of the actors available, he's the one I would go with. Mostly because of his superficial resemblance to Cap, but also because I think he would be a big draw for women, which will really help a film they might not otherwise be inclined to go see. More women watching CBM's equals more CBM's!
Brent Sprecher - 9/28/2009, 2:31 PM
@DRAPER-

Why your argument is baseless:

1)Captain America is 6'2", Jensen Ackles is 6'1"....Cry me a river.
2)Christopher Reeve was a TV Actor, as was Hugh Jackman....and if you ever watched Supernatural you would know that Jensen has enormous presence and would be just fine amongst the A-listers.

Hmmmm.....seems like your only left with your personal Bullsh!t ..... anything else?
Talontd - 9/28/2009, 2:33 PM
Sorry Brent but I have to disagree with you there! Just imagine...

"And now for the stars of The Avengers, let's welcome Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, and...and...Chris Hemsworth?"

You have a valid point about him not being a household name but Hemsworth sure isnt! Sure he was in Star Trek but after I came out of that film, i definitely wouldnt have then recognised him had i seen him in anything else later on! It was like the actress playing Kirks mother - the only reason i remembered her is because she's in House!

Dr. Donald Draper: As i seem to have said 100 times here, Captain America is only 6'2 going by the official Marvel guide whilst Ackles is 6'1! As for not being built enough - surely LEEE777 has posted enough half naked pics of Ackles to show you that he's pretty well built, lol!

Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 2:34 PM
@joshw24: Yes, I hear you, but I'm not crazy about Hemsworth getting the role either. It could turn out to be a brilliant decision, but I'm just not sold on him yet. Thor is in my top 5, so I'm pretty picky about how he's going to be portrayed. I remember I almost puked when I watched that old Hulk episode with Thor the beer-guzzling chode.

Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 2:39 PM

I guess it depends whether they're going for a younger actor or an older one! You have the younger choices like Ackles and Worthington in one hand and the older ones like Wilson and DiCaprio in the other!

Just pointing out that our arguments are indeed LOGICAL, while your argument is based on some personal hang-up. It's as simple as that.
Talontd - 9/28/2009, 2:39 PM
@Brent Oh I am well aware that Leo isn't the right stature to fill the Captain's boots, and I was totally against picking him at first. But the overall pros outweigh the cons:

1. He's a big name actor that studios HAVE banked multi-million dollar movies on.
2. He would drawn a larger general audience (especially women). Cap needs to have a HUGE opening weekend if Marvel is to go all out for The Avengers
3. He can bulk up easily (i.e. The Departed)
4. His dramatic performances keep getting better and better.
5. His name DOES stand up to the likes of RDJ, Ed Norton and ScarJo
MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 2:40 PM

SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 2:42 PM
@Multi: I totally agree. Those are basically the same arguments I used for defending Brad Pitt in the role. I'm not totally against DiCaprio. The Departed was excellent and he was brilliant in The Aviator.
Brent Sprecher - 9/28/2009, 2:43 PM
@BRENT-

Yea but the problem is his age, i want a couple of films with CAP! Pitt is about to turn 46.....dude a 50yr old CAP just won't cut it!

Ackles on the other hand is 31......hmmmm, just right!
Talontd - 9/28/2009, 2:44 PM
I think everyone is just arguing over a role that's more than likely to go to an unknown. Captain America is already a role that would be easy to come off as hokey and outdated. They need to have someone in relative obscurity get it. No to Leo, no to Ackles. Maybe to Brad Pitt if they don't do the unknown. But he'd better do the performance of his life...and Marvel had better be ready to pay that ever-widening budget for all the big names headed for Avengers...

He doesn't need to - he can ride the Scorsese money train and make legit films and get Oscar nods every 2 years - the guy's a badass like it or not - I thought he was a little Douche back in the oldschool days of Titanic - but he's legit. Look at his performances in Basketball Diaries and Gilbert Grape - dude's a master.

Cap - he will not be.

And if he ends up being cast as Cap - well.......Well then I lose..
Keven - 9/28/2009, 2:49 PM
Yeah, exactly Talontd. Dean Winchester acts like a frat boy, not Ackles. However, Dean also displays a strong, noble, leader-like quality in Supernatural that is very Cap-like. Like me, Shaman, and Josh have said, take out the cockiness and Dean is Cap!
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 2:49 PM
Brent: Yeah, i definitly agree with you there! After hearing Hemsworth had been cast as Thor (a character who i was never a big fan of until JMS's run on the title) i went and managed to find a few clips of him in Star Trek and though his performance seemed pretty good i guess its hard to judge whether he'll be right for the character or not based just on that - it could either be really good or reaaly terrible at this point! As for Captain America, i think that they might just suprise us all and go for a big name especially after choosing actors like the ones you mention above for Iron Man, Fury and Hulk! Oh, and thankfuly ive never seen the Thor from the Hulk TV series - the pictures were enough to leave me feeling more than a little nauseous though, lol! :)

There were no differences to differentiate the characters. He has the same turned up lip when he's mad, he has that same stare when he is frustrated. Jensen Ackles brings Jensen Ackles to the characters he portrays.

I personally would rather not have Jensen Ackles simply because I want Jared Padalecki as Bucky (talk about awkward if they were both on screen!)

Photobucket

And I think Jensen Ackles would be a MUCH better Kyle Rayner!

MovieTheaterLad - 9/28/2009, 2:56 PM
it's ok superdog - it'll all be explained later in my epic RAPE article - where I just copy someone else's old news and then complain when it gets deleted because I'm a douche.
Keven - 9/28/2009, 2:56 PM
@superdog: Allow me to help unite the threads. . .

Ryan Reynolds for Captain America!!
MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 2:56 PM
SirPrize: I ahve to disagree with you about that. Though Ackles' main thing with Supernatural is acting like a cocky 'frat-boy' he's definitely capable of more dramatic scenes and pulls these off just as well as the cocky stuff! He can do funny, dramatic, action and nuts (My Bloody Valentine) all pretty well IMO!
JoshW - 9/28/2009, 2:57 PM
MOVIELAD @ No [frick]ing way do i want TACKLES in GREEN LANTERN!!! : D

REYNOLDS for everything!!! ; p
LEEE777 - 9/28/2009, 2:58 PM
Kev@ but that article will be deleted cause they don't like u

multi@ 2 things 1. GREAT SUGGESTION 2. Thanks for your service and be safe!!
superdog - 9/28/2009, 2:59 PM
superdog: This article is about Ryan Reynolds!?! ;)
JoshW - 9/28/2009, 2:59 PM
Meh, Ackles would be an okay Rayner. Come to think of it, he would actually have made a great Hal IMO!
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 3:00 PM
@ Brent - Who should play the adult version of Thor....

Sean Bean 5'10" or Kevin McKidd 6'0½"

SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 3:00 PM
@ superdog: Haha, aren't all the articles? But hey, you're just in time for the Captain America debate to dwindle by the over posting of boob pictures! We just need teabag to show up and we're good to go!
BmanHall - 9/28/2009, 3:01 PM
TYLER LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : D

KEVIN McKIDD for AQUAMAN!!!!

Check out JLA CASTING in FAN FIC, wink wink, nudge nudge................
LEEE777 - 9/28/2009, 3:01 PM
@Keven: Dude, what?!? Look, we've got guidelines in place that everyone can read and re-read to help them prepare their articles. No, your hypothetical "RAPE" article is not getting anywhere near the main unless it happens to be based on real information that you gather and rewrite in a unique manner with a legitimate source link attached.

Weiner123 does a good job, but in this instance he posted an article that contained news that had already been covered and he didn't include a source. It was a no-brainer to take it down and I sent him a polite email explaining why it was taken down. Why he came on this forum and started complaining about it is beyond me.

Brent Sprecher - 9/28/2009, 3:01 PM
Josh@ allegedly
superdog - 9/28/2009, 3:02 PM
superdog: lol, this article will probably get 300+ comments and 5 of those will actually have anything to do with Reynolds! :)
JoshW - 9/28/2009, 3:03 PM
Sean Bean is only 5'10"?! In Lord of the Rings he looked 6' easy!
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 3:05 PM
aaaand Brent fails because he is lost on my sarcasm.

lol.

Keven - 9/28/2009, 3:05 PM
@ALL YOU ASSH*LES: I want to play Cap! I'm 5'8, 180 lbs and ugly as sin. But I know my way around a machine gun and I hate Nazis!

WHO'S WITH ME???
MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 3:06 PM
hey Tyler -

lol. So.......How tall did those hobbits look?
Keven - 9/28/2009, 3:06 PM
Multi tried to make it a Squirrel Girl article, but it's Draper's fault for maligning Jensen Ackles as Cap...that's how this all started!

@Keven: I got it now! I thought you were on Weiner's payroll at first.
Brent Sprecher - 9/28/2009, 3:07 PM
MULTI: Sorry, but not me! ACKLES FOR CAP! :)

JoshW - 9/28/2009, 3:07 PM
Poni - you are already Captain America to a lot of us.
SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 3:08 PM
@Multi: Get me dem scalps!
Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 3:09 PM
until some wacky comic called 'Rape' ever comes out and is adapted into a movie starring the cast of Supernatural, Ryan Reynolds, Nicholas Cage and Megan Fox - I think it's safe to assume there shouldn't be any gigantic 'RAPE' articles being submitted.
Keven - 9/28/2009, 3:10 PM
Anyway, what does everyone think of Patrick Wilson for Captain America?

CaptainAmerica2
JoshW - 9/28/2009, 3:10 PM
HOOOAH my little bitches!!! Follow me!

Photobucket

Goddamn I'm ugly as shit. . . maybe I should play Deadpool
MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 3:10 PM
Brent what do you think of my picks for a mature Thor?

SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 3:11 PM
Multi for Bucky!
Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 3:12 PM
Kev@ but if they are make sure you cite your source
didn't everyone get the email with the how to write an article quiz? Or was it just me?
superdog - 9/28/2009, 3:13 PM
@SirPrize: I think Sean Bean is a brilliant actor. I know he's huge in the UK, but he's never quite made it big over here.

I don't know much about McKidd, but he's got the look.
Brent Sprecher - 9/28/2009, 3:13 PM
@Brent - check out Rome the series by HBO. First season is slow but the second season it picks up. When I first saw the series I was thinking that is Thor. Sean Bean is badass. Him playing Thor will catapault his career.
SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 3:13 PM
@MultiPurposePoni: You're not that bad looking! ;D
NataliaRomanov - 9/28/2009, 3:16 PM
@Nat: Haha I always WAS a sucker for redheads ;)

@Brent: Let me try to bring it home again:

GINNIFER GOODWIN for SQUIRREL GIRL!

I'm for Patrick Wilson for Captain America.
SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 3:18 PM
Holy $#&%! What did I just stumble into here? [Bijous holds his breath and quietly backs out of the room].
Bijous - 9/28/2009, 3:19 PM

comicboyV1 - 9/28/2009, 3:20 PM
Draper- You're an open c*nt in my eyes, and you know why I'm calling you that mother f**ker
ASSASSIN666 - 9/28/2009, 3:21 PM
SirPrize: Good to have you onboard! :) But why did you have to post those pics? I have a feeling that guy's gonna end up LEE's new Captain America choice... ;)
JoshW - 9/28/2009, 3:23 PM
@SirPrize I already f*cked him, but you can have sloppy seconds
MultiPurposePoni - 9/28/2009, 3:23 PM
@ASS: Yes, I do know why. It's because I called you an idiot. The truth hurts, doesn't it? Idiot then, obnoxious foul-mouthed idiot now.
Dr. Donald Draper - 9/28/2009, 3:24 PM
Josh - LOL, that's were I got them. LEEE has a huge 'sausage' photo collection.

Poni - I already F'd him too. He cried like a school girl after I was done. He's a screamer.

ASSASSIN666 - 9/28/2009, 3:30 PM

Multi, In reply to your 2:01pm comment:

1. I disagree. He hasplayed the role of hero/anti-hero as often as he's played the villain or the amoral merc. I would even venture as far as to say that deep down he is a hero and wants to be on some level, but he also see's the weakness in such foolish notions. Take any incidents involving his romance with Syren, or the whole redemption ordeal for Typhoid Mary. You could even say he does some things for no other reason than a psychological effort to disassociate that hero aspect of his persona. Despite his insanity, Wade does indeed have a sense of right and wrong and has even justified his wanton killing by defining himself as damned, showing he knows some of the things he does is wrong. Even when he is committing a villainous act, it is for nothing more simple than personal gain most of the time, and in the others, revenge. Deadpool also doesn't like himself much, he isn't satisfied by who he is, and in fact has a great disdain for what he's become. I would say that's because he is failing to live up to what he wants to be (foolish hero) versus what he is (amoral merc).

2. Your right, it would be very difficult to pull of, but it could be done. Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it pulled it off masterfully. So if they could give it that approach in terms of narrating, it would work. Plus Reynolds has the voice for it. Hey! What if David Fincher did Deadpool?

3. I agree.

4. You had me at 'Fox'
TheMyth - 9/28/2009, 3:33 PM
SirPrize: LMAO! :D I dont think i want any more details than that..!

SirPrize - 9/28/2009, 3:36 PM
Myth: In regards to your #2:

Hell yeah! I said a while ago David Fincher should direct Deadpool! He's got the gritty, violent style, the humor, I think he's a great fit for Deadpool. The only thing I haven't seen him do is action though, and that's a big part of Deadpool.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/28/2009, 3:36 PM
@TheMyth Very good point (#1 in your rebuttal), you have changed my mind on that point. Thanks for agreeing with the rest, I have no time to debate. I'm too busy trying to sell myself as Cap!

. . Hell, I'll take Bucky. Any help guys??

On a side note: Every time I hear FOX Studios is producing another CBM, I get instant gut rot.
