Ratner To Direct Youngblood

CBM fans credit Bret Ratner for ruining the X-Men franchise, now he's getting a shot at another comic book movie.

Reliance Big Entertainment has aquired the rights to make a big screen film adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s comic book series Youngblood with Brett Ratner attached to direct.

Ratner told Variety that “Most of the great graphic novels are gone, and ‘Youngblood’ is one of the few comicbooks left”

Or maybe he meant that its one of the few that he'll be allowed to take the helm on.

Youngblood is about a US government run super-team. At the time of its release, Youngblood #1 was the highest selling independent comic book ever.

We wonder what Rob Liefeld thinks about this pick?

	ok at the risk of sounding like ..well..like im wrong! im going to have to say that X 3 being a dissapointment was not ENTIRELY Ratners fault. The script was awful and alot of the performances were pretty much sub standard..in fact ill go so far as to say that ol brett did a fairly decent job with the material he had to work with. i mean x 3 wasnt absolutely terrible! sure parts of it were..but parts were also pretty cool. 	O.k., I was a huge fan of Youngblood, back in the day. It was a very stylized, character driven, visually dynamic series. I only question how well it will translate to film, and how much of the appeal of the chracters will be lost in that translation? I was never a huge fan of the "lets all wear black leather" theme that tends to generate in the comic book/film world, and this series thrived on the individualistic/stylistic approach of its characters. I have a feeling it will suffer greatly if it's given the "realistic" approach that Rattner gave the X-Films. And I may be wrong, but were they talking about changing the title of the film to "Infinity?!" (I couldn't tell if they were referring to Youngblood or Fly Wires.) 	Man, this really is the perfect match. Both of these guys are the kind of creators the people love to hate, but yet they've both brought pretty pivotal movements in their respective fields, and in their respective fields, everybody knows their name, like them or not. It's awesome seeing the Ratner/singer devotees rally too. In my opinion, those two made films that were the perfect negative reflection of each other. Neither were perfect, but they both seemed to have what the other needed. I can't say that I ever felt there was anything deep or all that interesting in the writing of Youngblood but man, it was still fun to read as a kid. Just like most of Ratner's films, it was action packed, funny, and completely over the top. Brett probably sees Liefeld as the son he never had. They're going to have to hire actors with extremely small feet if they want to do the characters justice though. :P And dude, grif, right on...bring on Wild Cats. You could do a trilogy. 	I gunna have to say that Singer did an excellent job on the frist two x-men movies, no lie...those were amazing. Now, I know the superman movie wasn't up to par, but again, crappy writing...the scenes of him saving a falling bowing....amazing! and the writing was not Singer's fault. Ratner...well...I just don't like Ratner...haha, X3 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I doubt that man's ability to direct anymore. A lot of the hollywood big wigs think these stories are shoot-em-up bang-em-up flicks, when that's only part of it. 	X-3 was just a poor script, dictated by the actor's schedules and producer's whims, instead of the writer's ideas. Between trying to give storm a bigger role to make the Oscar princess happy, and finding a last minute reason to give Marsden time off to be a b&%$ in Superman instead of X-men, the movie was doomed to be sub-par. That said, it was a hell of a visual feast and considering that Ratner came in two weeks before shooting began, due to Vaughn dropping out because he hated the script, and Singer dropping out because he heard the Son of El calling... I can't blame Ratner for the less desirable parts as much as praise him for what DID work. The fact that it wasn't a total disaster and that we can all argue over which was better shows that he did the impossible with a piece of shit. He's a vet, and it showed. It also goes to show that Alan Moore was right all along... You spend the yearly budget of a small country on a project that cost under ten thousand to create in it's original medium and all you get is another 100 people telling you what the project should be and shouldn't be. Your final product becomes nothing more than a diluted version of the original with some big explosions...and in the end, everyone agrees that the book was better to begin with. 	Actually I did like all the action in X-3. Now I don't want a Superman movie with mindless action and violence in fact to me Superman's story is the most important part. BUT HOLY SHIT, it would be nice to see him fight someone, anyone for crying out loud. I mean what kind of movie would the X-men have been if they didn't hit anyone. I'll tell you one thing there would be no conceivable way to have Wolverine in that movie. 	Brett Ratner should have directed Superman and Bryan Singer should have done X-Men 3. I don't get all up in arms if the movies aren't exactly like the comics since the comics aren't exactly like the comics original sources ie Ultimate Titles, Year One, etc. As longs as they don't let that Mark Steven Johnson guy direct anything but toilet paper commercials, I will be content to give each movie a chance before I pass judgement. 	If Coats is right and Ratner doesn't direct and Sylvain White does, then let's hope that he does a good job because it seems like he's pickin' up some comic book movies. Sylvain White is directing Frank Miller's Ronin and so hopefully he's a good director so we can have some more great comic book flicks! Unlike Ratner's.... Actually, X-3 wasn't awful. 	X-3 would've been very good if it was about 45 minutes longer. I still like the movie just for Beast, Colossus, and Iceman actually turning into ice. I don't blame Rattner. How much can a guy change for being with a movie for such a short period of time? I don't think he is an exceptional director either, but I can't disrespect him for his work on X-3. 	Rorschach I agree with all the critique on X-3. I wasn't saying it was a good movie at all.I liked it probably b/c I would like anything X-men. X-2 is my second favorite comic book movie of all time after TDK.It sucks that Colossus only had 1 line. I still don't know why he wasn't Russian either. If Ratner had more time he probably would've added a wise cracking street smart African American named Bishop (played by Chris Tucker of course) if he did have time to work on the script lol. All kidding aside he did fine with what he had to work with. Back to the topic. I only read the first few issues of Youngblood. It never hooked me in. 	Looking back over all of the movies Brett has made...I gotta say, in his short career, he's made a lot of successful, enjoyable movies. From Rush Hour, to Red Dragon... A lot of them very American popcorn (isn't that just another word for entertaining?)but they all pleased the hell out of crowds, for the most part. And as far as Liefeld, whatever the guy's rep in the 90's was, I've seen him at more than a few shows, and he seems like a hell of a nice guy. Despite all of the fan hate he gets, he still maintains an army of supporters, and I'm sure it's earned. He got into the comic business at what? Like 10 years old? :P He was a star all through the nineties and helped propel Image to the 3rd largest comic company in the country, even for some time, upsetting the balance that was the Pepsi and coke of the comic world (marvel/dc). It's also the largest company to so fervently protect creator rights. Maybe we should cut them both some slack and see what they can bring out. Who knows; it could be as exciting as an Avengers film, but actually have a sense of humor. I wish Verhoven was helming the film, but I'm up for seeing what this Sylvian guy can do. A comic movie is a comic movie. It's good to see money going into the medium. Especially when it's creator owned. Don't blame me if it sucks though. 	I didn't get the hype of "Youngblood". From the three I've read all those years ago, it was basically an X-Factor with Teen Titan elements. Filled with poorly structured stories and Rob Liefeld is such a garbage artist too, so much so, I was surprised he got as much work as he did. The only thing Liefeld did good was create Deadpool, oh, and his hand in the Cable character, in my opinion. Now a movie? I don't think it'll take, honestly. Brett Ratner attached to this doesn't help it, as a producer or director. Any role where he has a say in its creative direction can't be all that good. Sure he basically had X3 dropped on his lap but in those situations you have an opportunity to show how good of a director you are by being creative with what you got and find clever solutions to overcome all the speed bumps that goes with production. The fact he made it a personal point to have Vinnie Jones quote a friggin' "YouTube" video clip showed the maturity he had in handling the franchise. Sadly, he dropped the ball and showed he was completely out of his element and should stick to brain-fart action movies like his "Rush Hour" series. "Red Dragon" was most likely him at his best. Anyway, back to "Youngblood". Again I wonder "why?". I'd much rather toss down cash to see "The Darkness" or "Witchblade", hell, even another stab at "Spawn" before I look at a Rob Liefeld circus from the Image vaults. I can't stand that Liefeld, the audacity he has to think himself equal in the company of Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane is so damn laughable I'd like to snap kick a "How to Draw Anatomy" book up his craw for it. 	As for the Xmen franchise, i didnt care that they wore black.. hell, im glad they did coz Jackman wouldve looked stupid in a yellow spandex! What killed Xmen3 for me is not that Prof X or Cyclops died but because a lot of characters were out of... well, character. For a film with a lot of mutants, Magneto's henchmen were what? powerless stand in actors that Wolvie could stick his claws in? The only guy with powers in that forest was Spike. And would you believe that Omega Red was there? Dont believe me? Read the end credits. He was the caucasian with the omega tattoo. And Callisto having speed powers? What the hell was that? And who was that thunderclap guy/chick character? The porcupine? Xmen has hundreds and hundreds of characters to choose from yet they had to make shallow characters of their own. 	problems with Ratners film: - Colossus being American and NEVER talking when is by far my favorite x-man - not enough Beast action - not enough Angel action - brutal killing of professor X - the juggernauts terrible suit - the lack of other brotherhood members (something origins is fixing) - golden gate bridge was completely unnesesary and probably ate a good chunk of budget - a good deal of the dialogue was sub-par - half the mutants at the end looked like they all had the same powers - cyclops entire death sequence made me punch myself in the head NOW, much of this can be directed at the writers but come on, get a new script then. The entire movie wasnt bad and in a whole I dont even hate it as much as I used to, but it does make me very sceptical about this movie since it isnt a garunteed hit like X3 was. Any fan of the xmen and the xmen movies was going to go see it and going to buy the DVD, but youngblood must be handled more delicately. 	Here's the biggest problem with X-Men 3. All that character development and setting up that Singer did for the big Phoenix plot for the third movie? Ratner and the writers took all that, set it down on the ground, and took a big steaming crap on it. Instead of focusing on the Phoenix, they put that whole story (that had been building for two movies) in the background and focused on this big retarded plot about a cure for mutations. Boring. Then of course they had to give Storm a bigger part. Halle Berry is awful. She's a crap actress and was never a good choice for Storm. But she was in every scene and she always had to say something DRAMATIC like "Yeah, I know. But are you ready to do what's necessary when the time comes?". Then they had to have a close up on her frigging eyes EVERY TIME SHE STARTED USING HER POWERS. Yeah, they turn white, we get it, stop showing us. Then she makes a really stupid face, cocks her head and sticks her arms out and shoots lightning. UGH. And Magneto's henchmen? Garbage actors dressed up like little rebel/goth dorks with useless powers. On top of all that they have to kill off or depower all these major players. And this whole time Jean/Phoenix is just kind of standing their being veiny (why was she so friggin veiny?) and angry looking. Not all that threatening until someone made a point of mentioning how powerful she was. Then she disintegrates people and makes stuff float. Yeah, turning Professor X into sand is really an emotional scene. Heartbreaking. Yawn. Granted, there were SOME good parts. They did a good job with Multiple Man, a decent job with Angel, an excellent job with Beast, and some of the fights were pretty good. Actually...that's really all I can think of. It was nice seeing Iceman finally fully ice-up, but I was never all that fond of the actor they had playing Bobby anyway, and his personality was wrong in all 3 movies. 	@ alten... that was the intended joke. LOL @ Weapon X Kid Omega (played by Ken Leung)is different from the guy i mentioned. Kid Omega was the asian dude with spikes (why Kid Omega? beats me). But i was wrong nevertheless coz they didnt say it was Omega Red but rather Omega mutie (played by David Colin Smith). That was probably the guy with Omega tattoo i mentioned in the forest. 	You have to understand why that movie was made the way it was made. Originally The Last Stand was supposed to dovetail into a 4th movie which would have been the Dark Phoenix Saga, but when Singer left they pulled the plug on that idea. As far as I know from that point they signed on Ratner and basically dumbed down the script to wrap up the franchise (and incidentally make a shtload of money) and give Halle Berry way too much screen time because she was crying like a baby. There was talk of keeping the franchise going with just Wolverine and some new mutants, but then Origins came up and they're going down that road. I think what we're going to get in a few years (5-7) after the Wolverine Origins stories are done, is a new X-Men movie that will be done completely right. Not that the first ones were bad, they were just the equivalent of Batman and Batman Returns in the 80s-90s. Good movies that paved the way for great movies like the Dark Knight. Iron Man showed us how great Marvel comic book movies can really be and I'm sure we'll get a reboot of the X-Men someday. Do seriously....You, Shaman...and "that dude with the Jokers avatar"....Like seriously the way you said and explained everything thats exactly what they did...and what happened. I think Iron Man was good because it wasnt done by FOX....Fox likes to ruin things. Thats what I've noticed...those conservative bastards. They wanted to jump over on to WB's nutts and give them a hard time about Watchmen. If they do make a reboot to the xmen movies they should start with the ORIGINALS. The first Xmen...and keep wolverine for like installment four....have the trilogy be about them finding new blood....like storm and iceman leaving the mansion...colossus joing...wolverine showing up...stuff like that....they need to get the damn origins right. 	TBH, i think Xmen and Fox did a good job except for the part 3 where everything f'd up. Xmen is not of those books that you can translate to film as it is. The costumes will never work nor will the original team. Popular characters sell and we all know Wolverine is synonymous with popular.
