NYMAG.com recently caught up with director Patty Jenkins at the premiere of
Five in the Soho district of New York. Here's what they reported about their discussion with Jenkins:
So when we ran into Jenkins at the premiere of Five at Skylight Soho on Monday, we asked her if Thor 2 was really next on her slate. “I can’t say, but yes,” she laughed. “I can’t say anything definitive, but it’s exciting to be in talks with them about it.” Jenkins understands she’s an unusual choice for the project — she hasn’t worked with big special effects before. “I think Marvel is really ballsy to think outside the box,” she said. “And I think everyone they’ve talked to and hired has been interesting.” While the deal is still being sorted out, she's prepping for the gig, surreptitiously. When asked what she was reading, comics- and graphic-novel-wise, she said, “Right now, I’m reading all of … I can’t say.”
Without question, this is indeed an intriguing choice by Marvel. However, Jenkins has shown that she can definitely handle a drama with
Monster. While nearly everyone has stated they enjoyed Kenneth Branagh's Thor, quite a few people felt the movie was missing something that they couldn't quite identify. Patty Jenkins, born Patricia Lea Jenkins, July 24, 1971, is an American film director and writer. She grew up in Lawrence, Kansas and attended the AFI Conservatory. She graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1993. The most famous film she has directed to date is Monster, a docudrama about Aileen Wuornos. On July 14, 2011, she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the pilot of The Killing.
Thor is a 2011 American superhero film based on the comic book character of the same name published by Marvel Comics. It is the fourth film released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was directed by Kenneth Branagh, written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgård. The film tells the story of Thor, a god who is exiled from his homeland of Asgard to Earth. While there, he builds a relationship with scientist Jane Foster. However, Thor must stop his brother Loki, who intends to become the new king of Asgard.
