Comics legend Jack Kirby is responsible for some of the most iconic comic book creations of all time, and some of it helped to smuggle six Americans out of Iran as part of Operation Argo. Now you’ll finally get a chance to see this artwork in color for the first time, courtesy of Heavy Metal’s August issue.  Check out more at Bleeding Cool.

As those who saw the recent Oscar-winning movie adaptation Argo know, Jack Kirby was hired by producer Barry Geller to create concept art for an adaptation of the Roger Zelazny novel Lord of Light. Kirby produced the art, but plans for the film fell apart shortly after and production ceased. However, when the U.S. Embassy was stormed in 1979 and American citizens taken hostage, the CIA used Kirby’s art and the concept of the Lord of Light film to set up a cover of filming a new sci-fi film, Argo, in Iran — allowing CIA agents to infiltrate the country in disguise as movie makers, and extract all six hostages.

This August, Heavy Metal magazine will print some of the Lord of Light artwork in color for the first time, emphasizing the trippy cosmic spectacle that only Kirby could have imagined.

Besides being the first time the art has been printed in color, it’s apparently also the first time that Kirby’s art has been featured in Heavy Metal. But if you can’t wait to see it, you can check out some of the uncolorized concept art here.

Nice!

I liked the film/real life images during Argo's credits.

@Superior

And Terrio writing for both Justice League movies and likely writing the Batman solo film with Affleck directing.

Adapting historical events and adapting from fictional source material is very similar. Very much confident because of Terrio's inclusion.

Argo is fantastic. Terrio's dialogue in that BvS trailer is great.

Man of Steel had a lot of great dialogue. More than some people remember. But it also it's fair share of lines that had me like "That made it in the movie?" I love that film to death but that was probably it's biggest flaw. To me anyway.

@ImKennyPowers

I couldn't agree more, man. Terrio is going to kill it.

@Jollem

The writing in Man of Steel, at times, felt pretty odd. I'm not sure if writing the screenplay includes outlining and helping with the story in some way, but I just feel as though Terrio is going to kill it; especially after what he did with Argo.

It wasn't the MOS dialogue alone (though that was pretty horrible), it was the situations in which the characters found themselves and how they reacted. Pa Kent telling Clark to let people die and then sacrificing himself . . . for no reason? Superman and Lois sharing a goofy romantic moment . . . on the ashes of a couple thousand dead people? It was just completely tone deaf.

I really don't understand the hate for Man of Steel. Especially the hate for the fight sequences and the destruction. It was obvious why Superman couldn't hold back Zod and Faora and the other Kryptonians.... It was also obvious that Superman was still progressing and becoming.... Superman, and it was more than obvious that Zod would stop at nothing, Zod was more than prepared to kill everyone and everything

Zod's character progression in that movie was great, you actually felt for him at the end, he was trying to do what he was destined to do.

I have a feeling (I know) that Man of Steel will make B v S and the following sequels so much better because real people and civilians died, and more importantly, you believed they died.

And, all of the destruction did exactly what it was supposed to do, it has people wondering what happened and waiting for the next thing.... Batman v Superman

And, Thank God for variety. The MCU is doing it's thing and now were going to have the DCCU doing it's thing. The more quality CBMs, the better.

Now, they just have to make that stupid "Damaged" tattoo on Joker's face work (I'm really wondering if they will cut it off), but I have faith in Leto, and Suicide Squad is looking incredible from the set photos, can't wait for that

@Jollem

One reason why the writing in Man of Steel was odd was because the movie didn't know what tone it was going for. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most of the films establish their tones and their writing matches it and/or not effected by sudden tonal change or the undecided tone overall.

No no, just no.

Pa Kent wanted to protect first and foremost. It's a parent mentality only parents can fathom. He doesn't see it as letting other kids dies, he ONLY sees it as protecting Clark, his son. I assume, THAT is what parenting is like.

I loved Zod.

He was a fully fleshed out character, who posed an actual threat to the hero, and more importantly, we understood exactly where he was coming from and his motivation. He had a fully realized and interesting character arch. Underrated villain imo.

Kirby can be summed up in 3 ideas: Square Jaws, Space Cubes, and Giant Overlords in funky space helmets. Was he good? Sure. (New Gods/Darkseid are his best work) But did he also recycle a great deal of his own ideas? You betcha.
