EDITORIAL: How A Justice League Film Could Work

DC has been really Slack in the film Department. Using the Marvel formula, they too can be successful. Here is my take.

Dc has an issue when it comes to adapting properties. They can only seem to Adapt Superman and Batman, as heroes. Then instead of bringing on another hero they give us a Lame Jonah Hex film, or a lame minor character film. Then there is the Lame green lantern film. Here is what and when they need to do there Shared Universe films.

Ok, to get Marvel, they need at least three movies per year. Here is a time line and wht i think should happen.

The Man of Steel (2013)- Exactly what you think would happen in this film. And Maybe have a Oliver Queen cameo.

The Flash (2013)- Ok, make him witty and sarcastic. Make him the DCMU's Iron Man. Why? Audinaces like to laugh. Iron Man did so well because of its Humor, and loveable characters. Make him fight Captain Cold. And set up other Rogues. Have Cold freeze over and ocean or something and you could introduce Arthur Curry, as perhaps an activist for the ocean and keeping it clean and well.

Wonder Woman (2013)- Give Diana the Royal Treatment. Give he the Thor treatment. She will be the fantasy element of the movie. A strange woamn in a strange world. (No Cameo here, maybe just few easter eggs like A slew of Newspapers reporting on this new Hero, and one of them is a Daily Planet Article written by Clark Kent.)

Batman Reboot (2014) - I know a little too close, but to get to a justice league to need to establish this is not the batman from Dark Knight and Dark Knight rises and Begins. Skip the Origin all together, Batman has been fighting crime in Gotham for 5 years. Make the villain Someone we havent seen on screen yet. John Jones in his human form should make an appearance as a Detective working with Gotham PD and GOrdon, one of the few people Batman and Gordon Trust. Maybe reveal he is an alien during the final battle.

Green Lantern Sequel/Reboot (2014) Give this the Incredible Hulk treatment. Give the origin in the opening credits get it out of the way and get right on with the story. Set it entirely on Oa,and have Sinestro as the villain. After the struggle of the film and its villain beaten have Hal return to earth because he needs rest.

Aquaman (2014) - Use the Environmentalist aspect to an extent not making it Avatar or anything, but make it a small thing about Curry's character, use Black manta as the Villain, Give Curry the Hard Water powers and bam, great flick

By 2015 there should be at least one sequel, and it needs to be The Flash.

The Fastest Man Alive (2015) - Make Barry Suffer, give him a viallian that will test him mentally and physically, maybe professor zoom, or something, then Introduce Wally West, and set up the Justice League Plot.

Justice League (2015) Just in time to compete with Avengers 2, that would be a fight to watch... So yea, what do you think?

I agree with most of the stuff you said here, but please - NO Batman reboots.

So ripping off every marvel movie is how a justice league movie would work??

I agree with everything except a Batman reboot. More than that, a Batman reboot just two years after Rises. Give Batman a break for at least 4-5 years. Maybe even more.

Timeline is a little unrealistic. I think a WW film should be slated for 2014. Flash and GL sequel/rooboot for 2015. Superman sequel Justice League in 2016. A few of the characters could be introduced in mid-credit sequences and expanded on during and after Justice League. I still can't think of a way to work a Batman film into the plan. Perhaps, his re-intro could wait till the JL film as well.

won't work on that time line. It takes years to make a film and have it ready for release. And it's usually ready for release months in advance of the release date.

Marvel took 5 years to get Avengers right, because they didn't rush it. Plus, putting out 3/4 films a year is way too much over-saturation.

The timeline should be more like this:

Man Of Steel (2013)
Flash (2014)
Aquaman (Summer 2014)
Green Lantern [Reboot is a must] (2015)
Wonder Woman (2015)
Batman reboot (Spring 2016)
Man of Steel sequel? ( Spring 2016)
Justice League (Summer 2017)

Like I said, it'd take a long time, and a lot of work to be done right. The Batman reboot should come toward the end so TDKR isn't so fresh in people's minds. Green Lantern also needs a reboot, but his can come earlier since the atrocious first attempt seems like it was an eternity ago. It's also incredibly important that, despite using this structure like Marvel, all the movies are so original that no comparisons can be made.

Great Read! WB/DC can definitely learn from Marvel's accomplishment, but absolutely should not copy them. For a Shared Universe/JLA franchise to work Dc need to showcase why their characters are better/different than Marvel's.

Not that i necessarily think one is better than the other, but if DC just copies Marvel, i.e. "Flash, DC's Iron Man" or "WW getting the Thor Treatment", the general adience will just see these movies as knock-offs, which the really would be. WB/DC just needs to run their own race. The truth is that, better or worse, DC's heroes are different. If DC just tried to just make their own version of Marvel movies, they will be completely off base. They will miss with fans, critics and the GA like Green Lantern did. They tried to make a GL film with the soul of the Iron Man movie. EPIC FAIL!

What DC can thank Marvel for is that they've already done the heavy lifting.
1: Now DC knows that not every character needs a solo film. Black Widow and Hawkeye did great in the Avengers!
2: Not every solo film needs to be a block buster, just het the characters out there. Thor Cap and Hulk were far from Mega hits, but stll helped make the Avengers the monster that it is! Most notably HULK. His movie did the worst of all, but he made the Avengers movie.
3: Not every movie needs to be The Dark Knight to be successful. Just worry about making the movies entertaining and let the heroes show off their stuff! Marvel's films, even the Avengers, are a far cry from Nolan's work but hey got the job done... most of them anyway...

They can use strategies, like TI treatment on green lantern, but yea if they want it to work they need to go a different route so that the audience doesnt say DC is just ripping off of marvel. It would be a fanboy war and a dissapointment to the fans to see their heores hated on.

Interesting FAN ideas-- but this wouldn't work. Not to say WB wouldn't do this-- 'cuz they could.

I've already said my piece on this, but no one seems tired of it yet, so I don't mind repeating myself.

Don't take the solo routes first. They wouldn't be BAD choices, but they are far riskier than what I have in mind. The Flash doesn't have to worry about Quicksilver in the Marvel/X-Men movies (yet) to avoid (ignorant) audiences complaining that he's a rip-off of Magneto's son, and I would love to see a solo movie on him someday. I would also really like to see a solo movie on Martian Manhunter, but that won't materialize for a good long time.

Dive in head-first, and instead of it appearing as an Avengers rip-off (again, I KNOW, but not everyone else does) where the superheroes form the Justice League to stop alien invaders or the like.... focus on the threat.
I wrote an article about the Legion of Doom (or rather, any supervillain group) being the starring characters who introduce the Justice League characters in their own right. Some have argued that it would only work for a Flash movie, and I understand that - but consider the possibilities.

The Justice League (from the villains viewpoint) are the bad guys. Individually, Mirror Master has spent more time running away from the Flash than advancing his criminal career; Giganta has suffered humiliating public defeats from Wonder Woman and is reluctant to even use her powers again should anyone recognize her; Gotham's not scared of Scarecrow anymore because Batman keeps coming up with a cure for his toxin; Dr Sivana's "children" have stolen his fortune and abandoned him; Black Manta's pirate mercenaries are constantly getting their asses handed to them by Aquaman; the Tattooed Man is having performance issues; etc.

These guys want are on the verge of giving it up - retiring from a life (or the beginnings of) of crime... when something wonderful happens. One of their hated superheroes is not only defeated, but captured by a much more organized supervillain. This particular party has attracted an assortment of unsuccessful villains to his cause as he has not only done the impossible, but is promising to do it again. The down-on-their luck supervillains join this mystery man (who already has an interesting team of companions) to help close the trap when the Justice League come to rescue their captured comrade.

Cheesy, but if written to be self-aware, it would show us a great deal of the superheroes the Justice League is made up of, as well as the crazies they fight. Interest in solo films would sky-rocket.
