Badger’s Hole: Is It Really That Bad? Michael B. Jordan As The Human Torch?

For a while, it's been rumored for Chronicle actor, Michael B. Jordan, to have a role in Josh Trank's reboot of the Fantastic Four. This news has sparked much controversy among comic book fans for the actor to play such a role. But is it really that bad? Read on for more!

So, why shouldn’t the Chronicle actor have flame powers from space? That’s the question that I ask. Recently, it was announced that Michael could be playing as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four film reboot. The comments I usually see on here when there’s a subject about this casting is that “The Human Torch shouldn’t be black, he should be white.” As a passionate comic-book reader, I feel as though Johnny Storm is a character in which race or ethnicity doesn’t matter. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing Michael B. Jordan playing as Johnny Storm in the film, I actually think he’s a pretty great choice. Two films that I saw Michael in were Red Tails and Chronicle and if you were to ask me, I think he gave a solid performance for both films. Usually, I feel as though a character’s race can’t be changed unless they have a specific trademark, attribute, or backstory. For example, most of the people counter-attack if Michael were to play Johnny Storm by asking “What if Black Panther was white?” Well Black Panther was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics to ever be created, his name preludes to the black revolutionary socialist organization known as The Black Panther Party, and also he’s part of a tribe in Africa, so that argument is beyond invalid. What makes Johnny Storm unique? His blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin? Or is it the fact he has the ability to flame on as a literal human torch? And it may seem like it, but this argument isn't all about race, it’s about acting skills and having the right physique.

Michael is a pretty fit actor and has demonstrated his level of acting skills to match the persona of Johnny Storm. Was Michael B. Jordan not charismatic as Steve Montgomery in Chronicle? Josh Trank could have suggested Dane DeHaan or Alex Russell for the role of Johnny Storm, but he saw something in Michael, something that gave him the idea that he would be an excellent Johnny Storm. There are many actors out there who can be just as good of a Human Torch as and maybe even better than Michael B. Jordan, but regardless, I feel as though he is a very talented actor and I think he would be great for the role as Johnny Storm.

IT'S CALLED A BADGER'S DEN! NOT A BADGER'S HOLE! CHANGE THE MOTHER[frick]ING TITLE!

Just kiddin' man.

I agree, Johnny Storm is a pretty interchangeable character. I don't mind much if Jordan's cast. The movie's gonna suck with/without him.

this movie will suck with or without him so why not make a major change while the movie is horrible?

Like I said on the article where it was rumored he would play Johnny:

As long as the character isn't defined or one of his defining traits by his race, or it doesn't make sense logically, then I don't mind. Jordan can be awesome, I think he can do great.

@NovaCorpsFan lol, have you looked at the Urban Dictionary?

1. Badger's Den
Slang reffering to the set of a pornographic film featuring midgets.

2. badgers den
1) A place where badgers live

2) A vaginal opening

But much appreciation for commenting, bro.

Will sue storm then be black? Will they explain that continuity issue? I like him as an actor but this is breaking a fairly established mold. How will that effect the story and will it distract the viewer, there are my issues

I say no. Changing Johnny Storm to a black man regardless of how good an actor he is, is like having Ryan Reynolds play Black Panther.

This casting has not be officially confirmed or even acknowledged by Marvel yet, just heads up

Sure as long as Sue Storm is also black or that he is adopted. It has to make sense without spoiling the origin story.

Lets be real here.

No hater gives a flying [frick] about this casting choice. All they see is a rival studio making a marvel film and thus ending the dream they jizz over of the MCU characters interacting with Galactus and other FF4/X-Men/Spider-Man characters.

Most people here have constant hate to say for this in any way, shape, or form for that reason alone.

So stop this bullshit.

If Michael B. Jordan acts well, and completely immerses himself in Torch's charisma and swagger, he could be green for all I care.

Thank you for this.

I find it funny how people are accepting of a black Heimdall when in truth, skin color IS important to his character, since he has been drescribed as having "the fairest skin of all the gods", but when Johnny Storm, a character in which skin color has no bearing on his character, is potentially to be played by a black actor, everybody f*cking riots. In thruth, I think that this whole shit-storm is the result of Marvel-studios fanboys blowing this way out of proportion since they will only accept movies based on Marvel properties that are adapted by Marvel Studios and want to find as many reasons as possible not to like the movie without seeing any footage or even knowing anything about the plot, considering how they never complained about Idris Elba being Heimdall and praised his performance as the character. So really, it all comes down to the studio-based double-standards that plague and in some cases, govern this site.

Since when does anything stick to the original. With time comes change. People need to get over it. Does it really matter as long as we get a good story?

I like Michael A. Jordan. But I'm on the fence about his hiring due to the whole Sue & Johnny sibling issue. They are blood siblings so I wonder how FOX resolves this continuiy issue. I don't want "adoption" as their excuse. They better have something more imaginative to explain the casting. I want Sue and Johnny to remain biological siblings.

FOX has royally messed up Marvel's continuity befpre. First, playing with Dr. Doom's origin and then making brothers, Scott and Alex Summers decades apart from each other.

Honestly, I can't take anything FOX does as serious. They could care less if it follows Marvel's continuity. As long as they get their movie made and keep the rights out of Marvel's hands is the ONLY reason why this movie is being made.

LOVE THAT GIF.

And there's no problem at all.

The comments I saw on that last article was disgusting.

Specifically Soto's. His comments was ignorant as [frick].

Like seriously. I saw people trying to say this is equivalent to if a white actor being cast as Black Panther and Luke cage.

NOT EQUAL AT ALL.

Those characters are defined by their skin color. Human Torch is not.

I actually like that the FF have a black guy on their team now and they can make him adopted next to Sue. Michael B. Jordan is a great actor and a great choice for Johnny Storm. Hope they can connect it to the X-Men Days of Future Past Universe.

I think it would make an interesting point in the movie if/when Johnny is being reckless with his powers and Sue tries to tell him to control himself and stuff, and Johnny raises the question of why she cares what he does because they're not related?

It could be use as an interesting plot device and raise some drama in the movie.
