After the near billion-dollar success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Sony Pictures has fast-tracked a sequel, and just yesterday, on Valentine's Day, the eagerly-awaited Jumanji 3 began production...

Despite heavy competition from Disney/Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Sony's well-received Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle managed to roar to a massive $962.1 million ($404.5M domestic; $557.5M foreign) worldwide, which gave the studio many reasons to fast track a sequel.

With the cast now finalized, the untitled Jumanji 3 officially began production yesterday, and Dwayne Johnson has shared an intriguing first look image featuring a new pair of hands discovering the legendary game.

In addition to Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, Alex Wolff, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, and Morgan Turner will also return from the previous installment, reprising their roles as the avatars and gamers, respectively. They'll be joined by franchise newcomers Awkwafina (Ocean's 8), Danny DeVito (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Danny Glover (Sorry to Bother You).

Jake Kasdan is returning to the director's chair with a script from Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

The film is set to open on December 13, 2019, which will set it up for another showdown with the Skywalker clan as J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX opens the following week.

If I was a crew member on any of The Rock's films, I'd feel jealous he'd be moving on to the next crew in just a few weeks.

I don’t think it’s gonna do the same numbers as it did last time. I mean star wars episode 8 didn’t destroy the BO like episode 7 did and with the reigns in JJ back directing and it being potentially the end of the skywalker saga it just seems like any movie that goes up against it will get destroyed. Maybe I’m wrong idk

@whynot - Didn't the last one succeed because it was counter-programming to Star Wars? If so, I'm sure this'll do the same thing.

@MUTO123 - yeah this is true and it could succeed. Personally I think in China it will do great but in US if starwars succeeds like episode 7 it’s definitely gonna effect the BO of anything and everything coming out. I enjoyed Jumanji 2 and I hope jumanji 3 succeeds

@ChangAlang - Far, far better than expected. I saw it because it was showing at Movie Tavern and I felt like getting drunk for a movie. Went back and watched it two or three more times.

@ChangAlang - its pretty good, a good enjoyable time and the main cast is really good and fun to watch. Its not quite as great as the original, but its a very serviceable sequel with some nice nods to the first movie.

@OptimusPrimeTime -
I kind of expect Jumanji 3, following the hype/buzz from the previous film, will do better than Episode 9 - probably earning around $1.2b. The only flaw in this is Frozen 2 though that could be a mixed bag.

Unsure if Episode 9 will hit $1b... everything points to it making less money than The Last Jedi's $1.333b after Rian Johnson & Kathleen Kennedy deep-six'd the franchise. Regardless of how much the film makes, the merchandise is not selling so it is going to be making a loss for Disney.

It feels like it wasn't that long ago when they finished Jumanji 2 and now they are on 3? Wow, such pace they are going.

This is a ridiculously fast turn around. I guess there won’t be a ton of CGI.

Hope it makes a lot of money and takes away a big chunk from Disney E9 final chapter of that successful TROLLOGY!
