As optimistic as I was after watching the new Solo trailer I still can't shake the feeling of this movie being a bad cash grab. All the characters just feel uninspiring so far and can't see anything original being brought to the table.

One thing that has always bugged me about SW was all the modified TIE fighters we've gotten.

There's simply no explanation for how the Empire had all these different variations of TIEs in prequel movies but only the original three show up in IV, V & VI.

Nitpicky, but still.

@L0RDbuckethead - Budget concerns. Most money went to the death stars and destroyers

That is my lame ass guess

@L0RDbuckethead - they saw that even with shielding and heavier firepower the pilots were still not getting the job done, so they cut the budget and gave them bare bones ships and just hired more pilots.

Also Empire has a second type of TIE fighter in the Bombing model, and Vaders TIE is better than the rest with better shielding, maneuverability and weapons. In general TIE fighters are faster than XWings without the defense of the strong shield.

Both the standard TIE and vader tie were in 4, then 5 introduced the bomber and 6 brought the interceptor. 7 gave us the FO(first order) model and the FO/sf(superior fighter) model, then 8 gave us kylos FO tie silencer(looks like a long interceptor)

@Gizmoduck -

OK nice, thanks for the rundown of TIEs, it's hard to keep up with all the models they've introduced. We're all the TIEs in Rogue One ones that we had seen previously?

@L0RDbuckethead - No, they introduced the TIE striker that is supposed to be able to 1v1 an xwing. But clearly there is no reason it was never a continued model other than it is supposed to be experimental. It looks like a Tie interceptor that lost the bottom half of the wings.

@L0RDbuckethead - The situations in which we see TIEs are very limited in the OT.

Only open, deep space fighting. The only time we get them to go in an asteroid field they get wrecked in no-time.

The thing is that, as in real world, Empire use different aircrafts for different environments. TIE Strikers for atmospheric fights and Heavy TIEs for this particular operation. Other TIEs we saw in Rebels were just prototypes.

First Order clearly went with a multirole fighter strategy, just like the real world. The TIE/fo and TIE/sf are crafts suitable even for atmospheric fights, since the FO has a smaller army, so it has to be more efficient.
