JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH Has Quietly Hit Another Impressive Global Box Office Milestone

As the box office performances of Superman and Fantastic Four: The First Steps illicit nearly endless discussions and think pieces about the state of superhero cinema at the domestic and international box office, Jurassic World Rebirth quietly continues to trudge along, particularly in the international market.

Back in July, the film hit the $500 million mark and just 4 weeks ago, it surpassed $700 million.

At 9 full weeks in theaters, Jurassic World Rebirth now sits at $855 million worldwide on a $338 million domestic and $517million international split.

A new era is born. This summer, three years after the Jurassic World trilogy concluded with each film surpassing $1 billion at the global box office, the enduring Jurassic series evolves in an ingenious new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth.

Anchored by iconic action superstar Scarlett Johansson, Emmy and SAG nominee Jonathan Bailey and two-time Oscar® winner Mahershala Ali, this action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team race to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park, inhabited by the worst of the worst that were left behind.

Also starring acclaimed international stars Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the film is directed by dynamic visualist Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp.

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Academy Award nominee Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on a forbidden island that had once housed an undisclosed research facility for Jurassic Park. There, in a terrain populated by dinosaurs of vastly different species, they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades.

Ali is Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team member; Critics Choice and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Bridgerton) plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis; Emmy nominee Rupert Friend (Homeland, Obi-Wan Kenobi) appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer, Murder on the Orient Express) plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.

The cast includes Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez) as Reuben’s family. The film also features, as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews, Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).

Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by BAFTA winner Edwards from a script by Koepp (War of the Worlds), based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

Watched it last night. Enjoyed it. Lots of silly stuff but I love dinosaur movies so had a good time. Tonight I'm seeing Jaws on Imax. Seriously excited.

@JacobsLadder - I agree about Jaws. It's been my number one movie of all time since I was a kid. I do not get the hate this Jurassic movie gets though. Sure it isn't a patch on the original but it was a fun popcorn flick. A load of stupid stuff though I agree.

@MarvelousMarty - I saw Jaws in 3d because the Imax version doesn't have the expanded ratio. The 3D is amazing! Mostly used for depth, not gimmicky at all. I felt like I was drowning during some scenes lol

I just think the excitement wore off in the 90s for me personally. The examples of dinosaurs on screen we had before the first Jurassic Park were what? Stop motion animation (Which has it's charm) So when we finally saw them in all of their CGI glory for the first time on the big screen it was jaw dropping. But after that film it became less and less special. So by the time Jurassic World came out it didn't feel like a big deal for me.

I remember shows like Behind the Scenes and Movie Magic back in the day. It was always exciting seeing how those films were made. All practical effects with the aid of CG. But once CG became the standard those shows got boring. The first film did a great job with blending practical VFX with CG so it stood out.But that's not the only thing that made that film special.

My favorite scene was the table scene where they discussed the ethics of the park. I don't feel any of the later movies quite captured that. It's the thing that grounded those movies in "reality" for me.

But at the end of the day it's just fun cinema, so if you like it that's fine. Those movies make bank so somebody likes it.

Little kids *love* dinosaurs and the JP/JW franchise has always been review-proof. These are the only reasons it's doing better than Superman and F4 despite far worse reviews.

If Avatar, Wicked 2, Zootopia 2 and Spongebob each make $620 million, it will knock Superman out if the top ten global box office.

@mountainman - While I just want Henry Cavill back as Superman, even still a lot of people said they would never complete Snyder's vision of the Justice League...

@Forthas - I know we disagree on Superman 2025 but I’ll agree with you that I did like Cavil as Superman. I didn’t like Snyder’s take on the character and universe but it seemed as if the character was evolving towards a Superman that I would more want to see.

I know that the flaws of the DCEU were MORE because of WB exec incompetence than Snyder. BvS had some major flaws, but ZSJL was very good, although I would have preferred a 3 hour cut to the version we got.

@mountainman - I hate Zack Snyder's take on The DCEU. I famously wrote an article on this site the year Man of Steel came out arguing against Zack Snyder's direction...

https://comicbookmovie.com/justice-league/editorial-not-including-the-dark-knight-trilogy-in-a-dc-universe-is-a-recipe-for-disaster-a82733

I am a Christopher Nolan fan and I consider Man of Steel more of a Christopher Nolan film and I prove it by pointing out that MOS had no slow motion moment from the director (Zack Snyder) who is known for that. I think that MOS was a perfect start for the universe. But when we got to Batman V Superman I did not even recognize Superman. Unfortunately people conflate the BVS Superman with the MOS one which makes sense since it is the same director, but I personally compartmentalize them the same way Superman 4 is not a great representation of Superman compared to Superman 1978.

The one and ONLY person to blame for ALL of this garbage is Zack Snyder. Had he made the CORRECT decision to merge the Dark Knight Trilogy with Man of Steel and following the highly successful grounded approach, Warner Brothers would not be on the verge of being sold for the third time and would not be in the financial situation they are in now. It was the worst decision I have ever seen a studio make. It has cost this company billions in unrealized opportunity costs, destroyed their reputation, and damaged the DC brand after it had been revitalized following Batman Begins. Snyder's decision to not combine the two franchises doomed the universe which we are all still suffering from.

One last thing, while I blame Zack Snyder for the condition of the DC universe, his only sin is being stupid. He otherwise seems like a nice guy, made some good casting choices (and some bad ones) and his Justice League was good. So I have sympathy for him when people pile on with the insults. He has long since left Warner Brothers and the studio heads (including James Gunn) instead of going back to where it all went south and correcting it they are making self serving decisions for themselves and not the fans. So they share in the blame for what DC film is currently.

@Forthas - His direction with BvS and even Justice League was not the ideal story to tell, that’s for sure. But I would have rather had his 2 part Justice League finished per his plan, vs what we got. The later era DCEU stuff, like Birds of Prey, WW84, and Black Adam, were all the worst stuff out there.

Man of Steel was a good starting point. My only real issue is with Pa Kent’s characterization. It bothers me a lot more than what Gunn did to Jor-El, which I still think will be “retconned” as Braniac manipulating it or something. The tornado scene wasn’t even the biggest thing, it was how we scolded Clark after saving the bus. That just really bugged me a lot. I can look past this and still think Man of Steel is a great movie and Cavill was good as Superman. He got robbed of not having a true sequel. It’s just never going to happen now. Missed opportunity for sure.

@mountainman -

"My only real issue is with Pa Kent’s characterization."

OK! I get that but allow me the opportunity to try to talk you down! I am unfortunately put in the unenviable position of having to defend Zack Snyder but when it comes to Man of Steel I do what I must.

1) First lets give Zack Snyder some credit. This is the ONLY film iteration of Superman that tackles the delicate issue of how Clark used his powers when he was a child. They tend to show how he discoverer his powers but no film ever showed if he used it to save anyone. For example in the Donner 1978 version it clearly shows that as a boy and teen Clark Kent had manifested a lot of his powers. But the film never shows or addresses if he ever helped anyone in danger. Assuming he did not, if he had those powers then do you think it was irresponsible of Jonathan Kent to not send him out to help as many people as he can even if just in Smallville? It is unreasonable to believe that in all the time he was growing up, there was never a fire, tornado, or other danger faced by a person in his vicinity that he could have helped and that it would not have brought attention to himself. The fact that he might have also hid his powers implies that he allowed people to deal with life and death issues in Smallville without intervening therefore making the same choice that Jonathan Kent was implying Clark should make. Now in that particular case the danger happens right in front of Clark so a more immediate and personal set of circumstances. So of course Clark was right to step in and help. But it is easy to imagine that Pa Kent (who was not there and may not have understood the severity of the situation) is wanting to dissuade Clark from going around and making a spectacle of himself if he is not ready for the ramifications but at the same times wants him to do the right thing which is why Jonathan does not say “No! don’t save people ever, until you are a grown man!” He qualifies it with “maybe.” There is a gray area which is why I think it is less egregious than the Jor-El message which is unequivocal.

2) The tornado scene is the one scene I would change. The problem is not the scene itself, it is the optics. He should have used Dylan Sprayberry in that scene and no one would have questioned it because even though he had all of those powers he was still a child with a child’s mind and being confronted with some ones impending death would cause anyone to freeze. Instead Snyder used a fully grown Henry Cavill so it LOOKS like Superman is standing there allowing someone to die. He then punctuates that with the ill conceived line...

“I let my father die because I trusted him. Because he was convinced that I had to wait. That the world was not ready. What do you think?”

It should have been...

“I watched my father die because I trusted him.”

It is not enough to ruin the film for me but there was some creative missteps. The only other thing was that I would not have cast Amy Adams as Lois Lane. She did perfectly fine in the role acting but her age and dissimilarity from the traditional character was a lot to over come and it just did not do it for me. These minor things made the film a home run instead of a grand slam.

This movie was just as bad as Dominion imo. This movie was so low effort, barely any likeable characters, no stakes at all, generic everything. I expected more from Koepp returning to write. [frick] this movie. Take it away honest trailers!
