With either Shazam! or The Curse of La Llorona taking the top spot, New Line will be the big winner this weekend as the world braces for the box office storm that will be Disney's Avengers: Endgame.

Shazam! has a chance to score the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row, as early tracking predicts a $16 million USD weekend for the film.

New Line is debuting another entry in The Conjuring universe with The Curse of La Llorona , which is currently tracking between $15-$17 million USD. However, the horror movie is being savaged by critics and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 33%.

Shazam!, which had a production budget under $100 million USD (after tax credits), is currently sitting at $260.4M worldwide. Of course, the film's earning will likely suffer a colossal drop the following weekend, when Marvel's Avengers: Endgame hits 4,400+ theaters in North America.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

The movie is certainly not a flop, but it is pretty disappointing that its box office is so underwhelming. $500 million is dead given the latest numbers.

@Erik10101 - It's possible for it to reach 500 million, like hell Bumblebee got close to that and it made a lot less money in its opening weeks. Although it was a bad idea to put it 3 weeks before Endgame

@dracula - Not a chance it reaches $500m.

1. Bumblebee released in December, so it had the advantage of the holiday break. Holiday movies tend to open lower but have much greater multipliers.
2. Bumblebee opened with $57m opening weekend in China and $170m total there. Shazam! opened with $30m and will top out at around $45m in China.

Shazam!'s numbers are not strong enough in the U.S. and overseas to offset that significant China difference to beat Bumblebee, let alone make the extra $34m to reach $500m. It is as close to impossible as you can get.

Disappointing to the fans. Not to New Line or WB. As it is, the film
has paid for itself and I have a feeling its not going to crash as
much as people think when Endgame drops. Families are going
to show up for Endgame on Friday or Saturday, see their show is sold out and see Shazam! instead while coming back the next day or weekend.

@WarnerBrother - Disappointing does not mean bad. A studio can expect to earn $300m, but then make only $100m in profit. They would be disappointed, but still be glad the movie at least paid for itself.

Shazam! making only $400m or so could definitely qualify as disappointing when recent low-budget films like Logan, Deadpool, and Venom made a whole lot more. The fact that one of their most critically acclaimed films is their lowest grosser, and by a lot, is definitely disappointing to some degree.

Agreed. But the WB and New Line have to be heartened by the fact
that a property that doesn't have the bankable stars of those
other films, still was a moderate success and is well positioned to break out in a sequel with The Rock, who is well known as franchise Viagra.

WB and New Line covered their asses by keeping the overhead
(including marketing) to a minimum and it seems to have paid off
even if that also means they likely left a lot of money on the
table by not taking more risk to promote Shazam!

They have to be confident that a sequel is going to do a lot better.

This kinda reads like an Endgame bragging article disguised as a Shazam article. Hope Shazam does great this weekend, it deserves it, but it's run will definitely be over come the 25th.

@SuperManes - You won't find a bigger Shazam! supporter around here. Loved that movie.

@Forthas - Really its not going to be a massive box office hit, but really outside of Iron Man and Avengers, none of the phase 1 marvel films were either. Really its making this kind of money because of Captain Marvel and Endgame

@dracula - What about Venom? Same production budget...crappy reviews and Venom is not even a superhero but an anti hero? How do you explain the difference.

Even Suicide Squad which was garbage did far better. It makes more sense to invest in a sequel to that film. I don't even think Shazam will catch Alita Battle Angel worldwide. People are making excuse after excuse but the numbers don't lie!

@Forthas - box office success doesnt equal actual quality, sometimes people like crap, the Transformers movies show that

@Forthas - Alita has to make 500 million to make a profit. Shazam is already at the profit point. ShaZambia is less known then venom and didn’t have one of the biggest villains (Joker;Suicide squad) in its trailer. Shazam also scored 90%+ on RT and is a box office success. Also Suicide squad and venom are both having sequels so I’m missing your point

@whynot - Man of Steel made a profit...it has one of the biggest superheroes so where is that sequel? Shazam...after 11 days STILL has not cracked $100 million domestic. man of Steel did that in one weekend and more!

@Forthas - one could say Spiderman fans and Tom Hardy fans makde the box office for Venom ... and Will Smith and Batman fans wanting to see Harly Quinn in Live action made that box office. Shazam if you ask me is like D list on the comic book.

Sorry, But Shazam is a financial failure! It is a DC property and is doing worse than even the most obscure superheroes of Marvel and DC. Heck...it used to have its own TV show. There is no reason this movie should be doing so poorly. It absolutely disproves these moronic critics that claimed audiences preferred light and campier super hero films to the more real world fare. This should come as no surprise. WB made Superman Returns in the campy ..."Golly Gee, Lois"...style of the Donner films. Critics liked it (Rotten Tomatoes 75%) while fans not so much (Rotten Tomatoes 60%). When they made the more serious and excellent Man of Steel it was pretty much reversed with critic crying and moaning that it was not Christopher Reeve so we should reject it (Rotten Tomatoes 56%) while fans thought it was pretty good (Rotten Tomatoes 75%).

It proves that the criticism of Man of Steel was pure critic driven BS! And now they has pissed away time and money on Shazam instead of Man of Steel 2!

@Forthas

Shazam will make money. Probably not a lot but it definitely be in the black by the end of its run.

“It proves that the criticism of Man of Steel was pure critic driven BS! ”

Shazam was the better movie. If MOS had the critic scores and audience reviews of Shazam - it probably would’ve made close to a billion.

@Forthas - There is no Man of Steel 2 because it was not deemed a success by Warner Brothers. I think audiences have proven over and over again that they do like lighter happier superhero movies. I think one thing that audiences don’t seem to be going out in droves to see are family movies or movie starring kids with only a few exceptions.

Shame. DC movie I most enjoyed in a long time. I wonder if it will even outgross Ant-Man 1?
