Sony Pictures Is Reportedly Building Towards A SINISTER SIX Movie Once Again

At one point, Sony Pictures was developing a Sinister Six project. Now, it seems the studio is once again working toward crafting a film based around Spider-Man's deadliest villains.

Once upon a time, Sony was working on a Sinister Six film that would have existed in the universe set up by The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. The project was so far in development that it even had Drew Goddard attached as its writer and director, but it ultimately fell apart and Spider-Man made his way into the MCU. Still, fans remained hopeful that the Web-Slinger's villains would come together for a solo film centered around them at some point.

Well, according to a new piece of information, Sony may once again be working toward bringing the Sinister Six to the big screen.

Before you proceed, this tidbit includes potential spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

During Deadline's latest Hero Nation podcast, host Anthony D'Alessandro offered two interesting tidbits about Sony's Spider-Man franchise: Firstly, Venom is reportedly expected to connect to the MCU version of Spider-Man. Secondly, Sony is said to be hoping to get a new Sinister Six film off the ground.

Of course, it's important to take this with a grain of salt until we get some more solid details. Having said that, the information shared in the podcast does make sense. For starters, recent reported leaks have pointed to Venom: Let There Be Carnage tying into the MCU Spider-Man series, and No Way Home is expected to feature an incarnation of the Sinister Six.

In a 2018 Vanity Fair profile focused on Sony's superhero universe, Spider-Man-franchise producer Amy Pascal revealed that Sinister Six was not dead, and even expressed interest in Drew Goddard returning as director for the film. Then, in a Spider-Man: Far From Home featurette from 2019 shared on Reddit, Pascal teased the eventual formation of the Sinister Six with the villains that had been introduced in the, at the time, two-film Spider-Man franchise.

Funnily enough, Andrew Garfield himself recently discussed the now-defunct Sinister Six during an interview with Collider, revealing that he had been involved in meetings about the project and also expressed his excitement over Goddard's vision for it:

"I don't know how close [the movie] got, but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting [...] I love Drew so much, and I love 'Cabin in the Woods,' and the other stuff that he's made. We just got on like a house on fire. And I loved his vision, he's so unique and odd and [...] off-kilter and unconventional in his creative choices. So, yeah, that was definitely a fun couple of months."

It's still too early to realistically picture what a potential Sinister Six movie would look like, but we'll hopefully get a better idea of what could be when Spider-Man: No Way Home is released.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe will continue with Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which hits theaters on October 1, 2021. That will be followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which swings onto the big screen on December 17, 2021.
