Could this be fallout from the Disney/Marvel merger? Collider is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau would rather play Cowboys & Aliens than get back into the Iron Man armor.

The writers of summer blockbuster "Iron Man" are also in charge of the Platinum comic book movie "Cowboys and Aliens." Read their update on that movie, and the possibility of Robert Downey Jr. being involved.

Will we see the "Cowboys and Aliens" movie, or ANY other offerings announced by Platinum Studios? Maybe not. According to this article, they haven't even been able to compensate their comics artists. So, movie projects MUST be in danger.

Robert Downey Jr.'s next film after Iron Man may take him from High-Tech to No-Tech. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the Iron Man star is in talks with DreamWorks/Unversal to star in "Cowboys & Aliens," a pulpy mix of the sci-fi and Western genres that could serve as a potential 2010 tentpole.
