Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE Movie Will Not Be An Origin Story

Recently, Devin Faraci of Badass Digest, was a guest on the Meet The Movie Press podcast. During the broadcast he revealed that the new Doctor Strange film will not be origin story.

"This is not going to be twenty-minutes of him being a doctor" - Devin Faraci
Back in June and July of 2013, Latino Review posted a couple of breakdowns regarding the Dr. Strange script that was written by Joshua Oppenheimer in 2010. Since then, Marvel has changed their Dr. Strange movie plans. They've recently hired Scott Derrickson ("Deliver Us From Evil") to direct it and hired screenwriter Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus") to work on the screenplay. Devin Faraci of Badass Digest appeared on Meet The Movie Press alongside Mark Reilly and Jeff Sneider. There, he revealed, Dr. Strange is not an origin story.

"So, for Dr. Strange they've had a script in-house forever. It is a pretty standard origin story for Doctor Strange. It's got Baron Mordo as the bad guy. That's all gone. Marvel's new thing is no more origin stories. So, Dr. Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It has Dr. Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a totally new script. Jon Spaihts is working totally new, On his own, without any of the previous stuff. Not even touching the previous script." - Devin Faraci

I doubt there will be "no more origin stories". It'll all depend on what property is being adapted.
alamborn19 - 8/16/2014, 8:31 PM
how will five year olds know whats going on since they cant read comics so much explaining to do to a five year old mind
btw just told him who a what and how red hood is took me two hours to explain infinite crisis so this will be a hoot a a half
DannyRand1225 - 8/16/2014, 8:33 PM
didnt Feige say recently that while Guardians is a space adventure film and Ant Man is a heist film..Doctor Strange is a more classic origin story
Bucky - 8/16/2014, 8:34 PM
I love Doctor Strange's origin, but I'm cool with them jumping right in. I'm just glad we're getting a Doctor Strange movie.
thewonderer - 8/16/2014, 8:34 PM
This is stupid. I would agree with the idea if this was a more popular hero like Spider-Man or Batman but this is a hero whose story a lot of people don't know about.
Gprez2020 - 8/16/2014, 8:35 PM
I dont think doing this with Doctor Strange is a good idea.
TheRationalNerd - 8/16/2014, 8:37 PM
Well I guess it'll be similar to what both Thor and The Incredibke Hulk did. Honestly I don't think it'll make or break the film but it's always a great experience seeing heroes donning their costume for the first time:

-Stark Suiting up in the Mark 3 Armor
-Cap getting his circular shield
-Guardians all walking down that Hallway together for the first time

Etc. I'm sure it'll still be a film to remember but I was looking forward towards seeing it all fleshed out from the very beginning.
TheManFromMars - 8/16/2014, 8:39 PM
But Feige said it WOULD be an "classic Marvel origin story"...
SimyJo - 8/16/2014, 8:39 PM
Origin stories get a bad rep because of all the reboots, that said I'm a bit disappointed in this, I thought Dr.Strange would of made a good origin story and I think the character will be missing a little bit of context if he's not seen as the arrogant surgeon who goes through the trauma of losing his career through injury and going on a spiritual quest.
JAC - 8/16/2014, 8:40 PM
That's a (in my opinion) very stupid movie. I personally am not that into reading comics so if I don't read his origin story at all before the movie I, like most others, won't really know who the character is & he won't have proper development in my eyes. I'm not too keen on this decision...

"how will five year olds know whats going on since they cant read comics so much explaining to do to a five year old mind"
They're five year olds, they don't need, or want, some deep explanation behind it, even if they do, I bet that his origin story will be mentioned at some point.
TheManFromMars - 8/16/2014, 8:41 PM
Then again, this would be kinda faithful to the comics, since Strange's first few stories started with him already being the Master of Magic and shit, and we only got his origin later.

Still, Feige said it would be an origin story and I'm a fan of Strange's origin so I'll wait and see on this one.
String - 8/16/2014, 8:42 PM
Until another source confirms this, I'm not buying this. Feige seemed very interested in Strange's origin story. Maybe it's been altered and the movie will tell the origin in an abbreviated way but I don't see Strange's first movie isn't going to explain HOW he became a master of the mystic arts. To ignore that is just plain stupid.

I also don't see Marvel not doing origin stories -especially when you have one that is so elaborate as Dr. Strange.
DylanTBest - 8/16/2014, 8:42 PM
However, I will agree, that doing this with Doctor Strange is a bad idea. Doctor Strange will be introducing a whole new part of the universe (Supernatural). Doing this with a character such as Batman, Spider-Man, and even Superman would be a better idea.
JAC - 8/16/2014, 8:43 PM
@DylanTBest You know what he means. The general audience won't have read a Doctor Strange comic book before, so why should they care about the character right off the bat? They won't know anything about him.
DannyRand1225 - 8/16/2014, 8:43 PM
this is recently..AUG 4TH 2014 on movieweb

"With Strange, it is a classic Marvel origin story because he's got one of the best origins ever. And it's our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural. Now, what is the definition of supernatural? It varies. We like the idea of playing with alternate dimensions. The very sort of crazy - [Steve] Ditko crazy acid trip way of traveling through dimensions and traveling through other realms is something that we think is very, very cool ... playing with the perceptions of reality."
FirstAvenger - 8/16/2014, 8:44 PM
In Whedon we trust.... oh wait....
gamecreatorjj - 8/16/2014, 8:46 PM
TheManFromMars - 8/16/2014, 8:46 PM

Yes, that's the Feige quote!

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm buying this "Badass Digest" guy...
McGee - 8/16/2014, 8:47 PM
Oh well f*ck you then Marvel. >:(
McGee - 8/16/2014, 8:49 PM
DlAMONDZ....if it's on the internet, it's true.
DannyRand1225 - 8/16/2014, 8:49 PM
TheManfromMars-yeah..idk about this
TheRationalNerd - 8/16/2014, 8:49 PM

Hmm, if that's the case I guess these guys either know something that we don't or their source of this information is incredibly (Ultron Voice) FLAWED!
ATrueHero1987 - 8/16/2014, 8:51 PM
I think I'll wait for official confirmation.
McGee - 8/16/2014, 8:51 PM
That's how I know Obama was born in Wakanda.
SuperCat - 8/16/2014, 8:51 PM
Bad idea if true. Doctor Strange has an orgin that's tailor-made for the big screen. Egotistical neurosurgeon who loses his ability to perform surgery? I would feel cheated if I don't see his backstory in the movie.
Phronesis - 8/16/2014, 8:53 PM
Well, a very loose adaption of his origin was already told in Batman Begins :P

But seriously, I don't know about this. This could be the "Iron Man" in terms of a beginning story for this character.
McGee - 8/16/2014, 8:53 PM
SMH at you guys thinking the internet would lie to us.
DannyRand1225 - 8/16/2014, 8:53 PM
well... Guardians is kind of an origin story but of the team not each character..maybe Star lord but idk..its more of a space adventure..and Ant Man isnt really an origin story going by the info we is but its kind of a new take or twist on the origin story
MrCBM56 - 8/16/2014, 8:54 PM
Alien - 8/16/2014, 8:55 PM
PapaEmeritus - 8/16/2014, 8:55 PM
If they have a very good script, the origin could be easily explained by flashbacks, just like in the Into Shamballa comic book, which is a master piece IMO. All depends on the script.
TheRationalNerd - 8/16/2014, 8:55 PM
Yeah, I gotta be honest here. The only way I really knew anything about Dr.Strange is from that Marvel animated film released for him back in 2007. I also knew a tid bit about him from Ultimate Alliance as well, oh yeah and the 90s Spider-Man cartoon as well.
MrFridayNights - 8/16/2014, 8:57 PM
Dr Strange is the B list character that has probably the best origin story.
UltimateCookie - 8/16/2014, 8:58 PM
With the right direction I could see Strange's origin being explained in flashbacks, nightmares, etc.
DrewDeLand - 8/16/2014, 8:59 PM
I won't believe it until it's official
DaVinci31 - 8/16/2014, 8:59 PM
I call bullshit, Faraci.

"It is a classic Marvel origin story, because he’s got one of the best origins ever, and it’s our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural." (Kevin Feige)
staypuffed - 8/16/2014, 8:59 PM
I can't trust anything he says because of @MrBlackjack now.
DannyRand1225 - 8/16/2014, 8:59 PM
also..i think the Joaquin Phoenix being in negotiations for Doctor Strange thing maybe feel through and didnt work out cause i think we would have heard about it now
