SDCC '11: Henry Cavill Talks How Training For Immortals Prepared Him for Superman; Bulked Up For Man of Steel

While being interviewed for Immortals, Henry Cavill spoke about his training, preparing for the role of Superman, celebrity status and how humbled he feels to be chosen to be the Man of Steel.

After their Hall H panel presentation at Comic-Con, Henry Cavill and Tarsem Singh spoke with members of the press about the Greek god film Immortals. The pair spoke about the film's tone, CGI and the film being shot in 3D. The British actor was asked about how he was preparing for Superman. Click on the link below for the full interview.

Henry, what was the physical training like, to prepare for this, and how did it get you ready to play Superman?

Henry Cavill: "The physical training was extensive and exhausting. I think I was doing 9 to 5, at one stage, with the training. You certainly learn a lot, when you go through that process once. You learn about how to do it more efficiently the second time. Although I’ve had a trainer both times, it’s a very different kind of thing for this next job (Superman). For example, I’m 25 pounds heavier now than I was in Immortals. That is enough said, really. It’s prepared me, mentally. When you have that negotiation, when you’re training and you get to that rep which is difficult, and you know you’ve got 10 more reps to go in that one set, and another five sets after that, and you say, 'I don’t really have to do this. I can do something else. If I just put the weights down and have a bit more rest, it will be fine.' It teaches you how to negotiate and win the negotiation, and how to notice the lie in your head, which is, 'Oh, it hurts it’s dangerous,' as opposed to, 'Yeah, it hurts, but that’s good.' As my new trainer says, it doesn’t have to be fun to be fun. That’s very telling."

Henry, what’s it like for you now, with all this attention that’s on you? Is it something that you’re able to just tune out and focus on the work, or is it hard to not be distracted by it?

You make a choice, whether you focus on the – and I hate the word – celebrity aspect of it, or not. I have chosen not to. I know I can’t make everyone happy, but I know I can do the most justice I can possibly do to a character, or any character, if I put my all into it. That’s the choice you have to make.

While he was at Comic-Con, Andrew Garfield spoke about the awesome responsibility of stepping into the Spider-Man costume. Are you thinking about that with Superman?

Henry Cavill: "It’s very humbling to be chosen to represent such an enormous character with so much depth to it as well, but at the same time, it’s a true honor. I want to do justice to the character and I want to be the right guy for the job. I want to prove them right, much like Zeus."

WOW nice find dude!!!

Henry Cavill sounds like just...such a humble guy. He really wants to give Superman the great portrayal he really deserves.

Cavill will knock it out of the park!

JDUKE25 - 7/24/2011, 1:50 PM
@6of13 Great find man! I truly think Cavill will look the part and do the role justice. You can tell he wants to do really well with this character, just like Garfield wants to do with Spidey.
JDUKE25 - 7/24/2011, 1:52 PM
and i can definitely take some pointers from him because I like to stop and rest a good amount when working out lol. So that was good to hear and some motivation.
6of13 - 7/24/2011, 1:54 PM
Thanks LP4@ AND JDUKE25@: I think the humble part is exactly why he is a great choice for Superman and Clark.
manymade1 - 7/24/2011, 1:57 PM
Awesome find dude. Sounds like hes taking his role of Superman with pride. He knows its an honor to play such a legendary character.
LP4 - 7/24/2011, 1:58 PM
@JDUKE- NICE points man. Cavill really is looking more and more like the answer to Garfield's Spidey!

furthermore bro- never let anyone convince you that Superman aint a fighter =D Snyder has agreed with us thus far...he agreed Superman needs to be more "physical" which was definitely reassuring!

@6of13- You and JDUKE totally pwn'd me with your awesome finds! hahahaha

And yeah agreed totally. Cavill's humbleness is what makes him perfect for the role...the real underdog!
mtx100 - 7/24/2011, 2:03 PM

LP4 - 7/24/2011, 4:45 PM
@GDSUPERGUY and JDUKE25- I betcha guys anything, that type of pick-up line would work better if he were Batman. I FREAKING BET YOU GUYS ANYTHING!!! lol

;D
superbatspiderman - 7/24/2011, 4:48 PM
I don't know why people are whinning about Cavill's height he is like 6"1 that is not short. Yeah its shorter than some actors but he is still the right height. I hope he bulks up alot because that was a complaint I had about Routh and even Reeves is that they weren't very buff.
JDUKE25 - 7/24/2011, 4:48 PM
@LP4 haha there's a strong chance you're right lol
JDUKE25 - 7/24/2011, 4:50 PM
@SUPERSPIDERMAN I know man, since when is 6 foot 1 inch short? He'll have the boots giving him at least another inch, he'll be fine.
Supersonicboobs - 7/24/2011, 5:35 PM
@ Gdsuperguy and LP4...keep fighting!
To all the Haters: F*&K YOU!!!....that's right!

Cavill looks the part,he Buff, the shirt may deceive You,but he 's Bigger,Superman Material,...we'll see a SUPERMAN like Never Before!!!
PLUS-> HE CAN ACT!

i wonder if ZOD will be Buff or is Michael Shannon working out to?
Supersonicboobs - 7/24/2011, 5:37 PM
*HINT*......."ZEUS".....*HINT*
Akercocke - 7/24/2011, 5:38 PM
In immortals he looks pretty ripped and he's 25 lbs. heavier now, he'll be alright. Look at Momoa, he looks better than Arnold as Conan, I mean being THAT big looks just dumb, you can't move, it's ridiculous.
AldoRaine - 7/24/2011, 5:50 PM
Good for him, I wish him well on everything he does.
LP4 - 7/24/2011, 5:51 PM
@Supersonicboobs- Hahahaha RIGHT ON MAN!! Great to get support from you bro.

;D

LP4 - 7/24/2011, 5:55 PM
@WittySupername- Sorry man...but THIS AINT "HUGE"

Compared to...

THIS

See our point?
LP4 - 7/24/2011, 5:56 PM
Henry Cavill has had immense and surely- INTENSE fight-training "300" style. Adding to the mix...we got Snyder as director who is a HUGE fan of the manly Jim Lee version of Superman.

ADDING INTO THAT- Snyder kept re-emphasizing that this Superman WILL BE VERY PHYSICAL. He even said he wants to see Superman "kicking some ass"

No doubt Cavill will be ONE HUGE MOTHER[frick]ER by the time filming has begun.
CaptainTall - 7/24/2011, 6:06 PM
No need to rain on anyone's parade, and remember, I'm as pumped for this as the next guy...

But Ryan Reynolds was passionate for Green Lantern. So was Mark Strong. Look how that turned out.
Supersonicboobs - 7/24/2011, 6:07 PM
@LP4 i been observing your battles on this site against the Haters {they are Negative Poison},....don't give up!
Keep up the Great work!
Supersonicboobs - 7/24/2011, 6:09 PM
we have a good script...green lantern did not have the Nolans! we have a better cast...
LP4 - 7/24/2011, 6:23 PM
@Supersonicboobs- Hahahaha ahhhh man I'm trying!!! lol

:)

But thanks for the moral support man, it's much-needed for me! hahahaha
JDUKE25 - 7/24/2011, 6:24 PM
I do hope he gets a little bigger before shooting starts, but he'll be fine. Plus one big thing @Supersonicboobs pointed out, the man can act.

Yeah, Green Lantern did not have a good script and Ryan Reynolds was not a good choice as GL. I liked Mark Strong but they didn't explain his story at all, then having him at the end of the movie all of a sudden putting on the yellow ring, the general public is wondering whats going on and why is he wearing that now. Green Lantern: First Flight had a better script of explaining all of that. But it was still an entertaining movie to watch.

Man of Steel will have a solid script and great actors portraying these beloved characters.....Hopefully
JM4Superman - 7/24/2011, 6:30 PM
I support Cavill
CaptainTall - 7/24/2011, 6:37 PM
I'm just saying: An actor having passion for a role doesn't always equal a good movie.
mastarockafella - 7/24/2011, 8:03 PM
This guy is gonna own Superman.
Vital - 7/24/2011, 8:04 PM
You want a professional wrestler as Superman? Cause there's no way to be that big and be a good actor at the same time, it just isn't so. The only person who is 'big' and can act is The Rock, but he shouldn't be Supes for obvious reasons.

I think Cavill is a damn good choice. The only other person that looks like Supes is Jon Hamm, who's too old for that role. I don't think they could have done a better job in the casting for this role.
Daniellantern - 7/24/2011, 10:01 PM
He's completely looks like Christopher Reeve on that pic above. Superman doesn't need huge muscle. His strength comes from yellow sun + Kryptonian physiology. He's gonna own this role!
l0rdleg0las - 7/24/2011, 10:18 PM
He still looks small.
soforizo - 7/24/2011, 10:33 PM
Another 25 pounds wouldn't hurt
KidGoku - 7/24/2011, 10:57 PM
Superman doesn't need that much muscle, he really doesn't to get any bigger. But anyway, the guy sounds like the right man for the job, just like Andrew Garfeild for Spider-Man. Not gonna say anything yet, but still!
busterbass24 - 7/24/2011, 11:11 PM
sorry everyone, i really want to get excited about this guy too. im a huge superman fan but i also think he's a little small for the role. and after seeing the cover of mens fitness the other day and seeing second place look just like i think superman should? i gotta say im still a little skeptical. maybe im crazy but i think as far as the look goes this was our chance to get the perfect guy for superman. see for yourself. http://www.mensfitness.com/lifestyle/entertainment/joe-manganiello
JDUKE25 - 7/24/2011, 11:54 PM
He's at an ok size right now and he can act. But I'd like to see him at least this big.

LP4 - 7/25/2011, 12:03 AM
I hope Cavill bulks up a little bit more at least.

@JDUKE- THAT is a good idea for a suit in MOS. It's classic...yet a bit updated too!
EarOne - 7/25/2011, 12:58 AM
look i ain't sayin he's gotta have a lou ferrigno or even a chris hemsworth size, BUT...i do hope once he dons the suit, he'd look much BIGGER than either Reeve or Routh did, as the above pic shows.

with Thor, Hemsworth got paddings and the huge cape and even the body armor really enhances his actual size, which is already quite big. then again, he's playing THOR.

with supes, i don't expect him to be as big as thor, even though the comics indicates it so...but, i don't wanna see a lanky superman anymore. heck even Tobey looks bigger in the Spidey suit than Routh did in his.

He already looked like Superman to me when he was cast and he looks even more so now than ever. He'll be bigger once they're filming but he really doesn't need to be as huge as some here are suggesting.

If anything, this movie will have some fantastic performances.

And like the little hint he dropped about Zeus. Wonder if it was intentional.
