R-Rating For TERMINATOR 5 Confirmed

Despite concerns over the next Terminator installment being rated PG-13 (like the previous film), Annapurna Pictures owner Megan Ellison has confirmed that the film will indeed be rated R.

It's been a while since we've heard anything official about the next Terminator film, which would have Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his role as the title character. But now, Megan Ellison - owner of Annapurna Pictures, which currently own the rights for the film - has answered a question from fansite The Terminator Fans regarding the rating of the film, confirming that it'll be an R-rated film. Various concerns have been made over the idea of another Terminator film being PG-13 after Salvation (the worries especially increased after The Expendables 2 was confirmed to be PG-13), but now those worries can be laid to rest.

TheTerminatorFans.com : @meganeellison We hope you can bring this franchise back from the brink of PG-13 HELL!

Megan Ellison : @terminatorfans We can't really tell you guys anything about Terminator BUT it will be an R rated film as God and James Cameron intended.

The film currently has no director (Justin Lin backed out a couple months ago to focus on Fast & Furious 6), and the rights are said to be reverting back to James Cameron in 2018. Share your thoughts below in the usual place.

Arnold is back...um...he was great in the first two...but...what?
Godzillafart - 1/26/2012, 8:28 AM
@monkeyballs3: Agreed on all points.
Shaman - 1/26/2012, 8:34 AM
All this means is that they're thinking of calling it "Terminator: Warzone". For any other franchise, i actually would've cared.
Destroyer14 - 1/26/2012, 8:41 AM
I don't see why there was concern. Salvation was great, with or without the R.

TERMINATOR is about John Connor. Marcus was in 4, but even if you typed that accidentally, the movie was never about Marcus. It was about John Connor's influence on the world, especially on a hybrid man/machine that lost everything, and didn't care about the cause. Thanks to john Connor, Marcus was redeemed from murdering his brother, and became a HERO.

DIE HARD 3 was as good as it got in that franchise.
KNIGHT3000 - 1/26/2012, 8:54 AM
By the way Christian Bale RULED as John Connor. I really hope he keeps it going. I like his John Connor even more than his BATMAN.

T3 was a bit weak, but I really loved T4, it was the grittiest by FAR in the franchise which is weird for the only PG-13 film of the group. But I think T2 is my favorite, it was just so well done at the time. Its hard to beleive people can still make lame movies after noticing how long ago T2 came out.
KNIGHT3000 - 1/26/2012, 9:01 AM
Anyone that thinks TERMINATOR isn't about John Connor, missed the point entirely.
Minghagz - 1/26/2012, 9:03 AM
Maybe this will bring Arnold back to the movie biz! lol
MisterNiceGuy - 1/26/2012, 9:11 AM
I can not believe people are actually supporting these movies and asking for reboots of the originals. It makes me want to trash your [frick]ing lights
drewXdeficit - 1/26/2012, 9:14 AM
She says the film will be "...as God and James Cameron intended." I don't know about God, but not having James Cameron involved contradicts what she said. They should've stopped after T2. The story was over. They stopped Judgement Day from happening.

Salvation was a fresh take on the series, which was nice to see, but it was executed very poorly.
BlindLemonShemp - 1/26/2012, 9:14 AM
Bring Back Arnold!!!

and have one of the Terminators be Ultra Magnus!!

I only addressed 1 comment at you specifically, the rest was just for blogging sake, or at whomever i addressed it to.

Addressing your original statement, I didn't know that Bale was to be Marcus, but I'm glad he was Connor. So thanx for that info. I did once hear that Connor was to be in a portion of the film and not the entire, but i'm glad Connor got a lot of play, because I always believed that the story was about him, even before he was born. I never said you said he did poorly, I was just saying that he was AWESOME.

And when i put all caps, I was quoting the T-800 from T3, not yelling at you. That wasn't even directed at you either, so chill, not everything on this site is a f#ckin conflict. That comment was directed at drewXdeficit, and is obvious to the story cause... well... Judgement day actually was inevitable, it still happened didn't it?

Next time I make a quote i'll be sure to use quotation marks. But because he(T-800 in T3) was a machine I figured it would be ok to seem mechanical.
comicb00kguy - 1/26/2012, 10:04 AM
Morty: Agreed that a terminator should go back and take care of the third and fourth movies. How many Terminator stories can be done before enough paradoxes are created to damage the time/space continuum?

T2 had the perfect ending to the whole thing. Why add any more to it, unless you're filling in the time between the first two movies.

Don't feel no way, I was born misunderstood. SALVATION definately should have been better, but for a PG-13, it was impressive, and accurately tense. I think thats why I like it so much, the intensity.
KNIGHT3000 - 1/26/2012, 10:09 AM
RISE OF THE MACHINES was weak and felt rushed.
Fearless - 1/26/2012, 10:15 AM
"R" for retired old man Arnie with a cain.
"R" is also for RETARDED franchise that doesn't end. NO THANKS!
Nubase - 1/26/2012, 10:41 AM
they need to focus on the war, follow it on from salvations cos how many times are we gona get a movie about a terminator from the future travelling back in time to prevent judgement day? if they do this with t5 then forget it, l actually enjoyed salvations, for me it was a breath of fresh air we got to see the war itself, l hope they continue with it but l very much doubt it, maybe when cameron gets back the rights in 2018 or something he will end it the way he wants to.
Fogs - 1/26/2012, 10:44 AM
That actually makes this movie more interesting to me, the rating.

T3 in my opinion is the weak link. It could've started on Connor explaining a la doc brown what a time paradox was and why J-day was unavoidable. Then go from there. Unfortunately they just tried to reenact T2.

About Salvation, I loved it.

And I'll tell you why: I don't know what led me to think this but here it goes: when I was at the theater and Marcus appeared I immediatelly thought of him with arnold's face. And the movie (which is good anyway imo) gets 200% better.

Try that once and you'll see. Connor wasn't talkin to skynet when he said "you killed my father, you tried to kill my mother".

That also explains his reluctance on trusting him (specially after what arnold said in T3, the only really cool line, that he managed to kill connor because of his affection to that model).

Every scene between them gets deeper and we'd be introducer to the original arnold-faced guy, with a background to him.

I imagine if that wasn't the original plan. It would be awesome and I still think on having time to try to manipulate the movie with a arnold face model.
Ceejay - 1/26/2012, 10:50 AM
This was never meant to be a franchise in the first place! James Cameron ended it with Judgement Day and the studios just kept making more crap and then selling the rights on to another studio to make more crap.

The sad thing is that they know fanboys are stupid enough to part with their cash on any make-it-up-as-you-go-along flick as long as it has special effects in it!
SimyJo - 1/26/2012, 11:16 AM
An 18 certificate sure... but why R-rating?, its hardly going to be a Terminator porno; "Live with me if you want to cum!"
JackBauer - 1/26/2012, 11:45 AM
Obviously, T1 and T2 were great. I haven't seen Salvation yet but I really liked Rise of the Machines. That may have had something to do with Kristanna Loken ;)

EarOne - 1/26/2012, 11:46 AM
The Terminator - a crazy low budget sci-fi/action masterpiece. it's got the job done. period.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - the story's not as fresh as the original, but it's got all those groundbreaking special cg visual f/x to OVERCOMPENSATE for its shortcomings.

Terminator: Rise of the Machines - after a long string of flops, Arnie needs a box office injection to his movie career. thus, the movie. a pointless sequel. that's WHY Cameron didn't even bother.

Terminator Salvation - a MAJOR LETDOWN. i mean, with Christian Bale's involvement and a star-in-the-making, Sam Worthington, in a very worthy commanding performance. he tops Bale, in this, i think. but, overall...disappointing, nonetheless. but, whatdoyouexpect from the director of both Charlie's Angels movies, McG??

The Sarah Connor Chronicles tv series - anything with Lena Headey...i'm THERE, though, Headey resembles in ABSOLUTELY NO WAY the original Sarah, Linda Hamilton... but, seriously, the series was pretty underrated.
SpiderFan35 - 1/26/2012, 11:55 AM
As has been mentioned already, language and violence that requires an R rating is great, but it still won't make up for cheesy crap like they have done in the previous films. Eddie Furlong was painful throughout all of T2, and Arnie cracking corny catch phrases is only funny to fans of Jeff Dunham "comedy".

Maybe they can work these into the next movie:
'Don't go there girl.'
'Oh no you dih-int.'
'That's what she said' (ok, that one might actually be funny)
GrayFox1025 - 1/26/2012, 11:55 AM
As far as I am concerned, T2 is the end of the series

With T3 Arnold comes back and basically says "yeeeaaahh, so remember all the work we spent into trying to stop skynet and destroying me cpu, well that was just a waste of time so skynet still exist =D"

Thanks T3 for ruining The Terminator
LehnsienLaw - 1/26/2012, 11:58 AM
AAAAARRRGGHHHH how could they make The Expendables 2 with a PG-13 rating?? laaaaammmeeee, but this is wicked news for T5. OHHHHHHH
Rubbers - 1/26/2012, 12:05 PM
Obviously @ monkeyballs3 you have a poor understanding of the terminator in T2. As proven by your mentioning several times (get over it!) of your dislike of "I now know why you cry..." line. In my opinion, this was the best ending the terminator could have had; it made the movie. What set this terminator apart from the first is that he was programmed to better relate to people as well as a child -- to become more human -- whereas the first terminator was all about seek and destroy. T2 was far more creative, had the best story line, & best acting. All other after the first two had there moments but overall failed to live up to the first two; Especially Salvation which sucked more than any of the terminator films. Good, but not great, special effects (only cause cgi/technology was better), weak depiction of the future, horrible character development, and twists/turns that made no sense. The film was just stupid which is why I only wtatched it once when it came out in theatre. I knew there was a lot of risk involved by trusting "McG" with this film (still can't believe he got Cameron's approval) but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong in doing do. Takes a little more than playing a soundbite of Alice In Chains 'Rooster' to get me emotionally into a characters past. Which makes me wonder: what's "Mc G" up to these days? Exactly! There's a reason why!

Kristanna Loken IS A LESBIAN? WHAT A F#CKIN WASTE OF SWEET ASS...

Linda Hamilton was gorgeous in her day, but I am totally in love with Lena Headey, always was.

You should watch the extended version to JUDGEMENT DAY, i think its called MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE. In that version a lot more is explained about Arnold's/T-800's thought and learning process. There is a scene when they are hiding in that gas station for the night, when Sarah and John surgically open the Terminator's skull and reprograms him to be more conscious and human like. Its a GREAT scene, and makes other parts make more sense including your favorite scene "I know now why you cry, but its something I could never do". Plus there are a whole bunch of deleted scenes where the Terminator is actually trying to be more human, like trying to smile, and tell jokes.

They cut a TON out of that film.
KNIGHT3000 - 1/26/2012, 1:07 PM
monkeyballs3

Also in that scene, Sarah actually tries to Terminate Arnold's CPU after extracting it from his skull, but John intervenes saying,
"If i'm supposed to be some great leader maybe you should listen to my ideas some times. We need him, he's proof about the future and all that stuff."

Sarah: "You don't know how hard it is to kill 1 of these things!"

For real, all that T-1000 glitchy stuff was AMAZING! It was such a better and EPIC movie that way. Best part other than Gas station surgery scene, was T-800 trying to smile. And also the scene where John is driving back to L.A. with Uncle Bob the Terminator and he says:

"Don't you understand why we can't keep killing people?"
Terminator just looks at him all vicious(cause he can't help it) and then gives him a very juvenile shrug, as if to say, "sorry I forgot". CLASSIC Arnold at his best.
KNIGHT3000 - 1/26/2012, 1:22 PM
Should change OVERWATCH's name to OMAC
mgeoff88 - 1/26/2012, 1:52 PM
I watched the first three films, but I haven't got around to watching Salvation yet.

I loved T2. I watched it so much as a kid my VCR ate the tape. I didn't even know it was a sequel. When I did watch the first movie I thought it was great, but to me T2 was the best movie.

It's going to take a lot more than T5 getting an R rating to get the franchise back on top.

@JackBauer Don't worry about him, that guy was banned. He was going overboard with reporting people's images.

Best scene in RISE OF THE MACHINES was deleted, it was when they showed the T-800 proto-type, in army gear, but it had a country accent. The managers over at Cyberdyne were like:

"Can we do something about the voice?"

Board Member: "We can fix it."

PRICELESS
KNIGHT3000 - 1/26/2012, 2:02 PM
The country accent from T3 sounded exactly like Hershel from WALKING DEAD. But extremely LOUD.
Rubbers - 1/26/2012, 2:05 PM
@ Monkeyballs! First, you're an idiot! Second, no one said you weren't entitled to your opinion. You simply fail at understanding. The reason I said "get over it!", is because after you stated your case, it seem you have nothing better to do with your time other than regurgitate the same repetitious BS, over and over. Did that hurt your feelings? Instead of 'get over it!' I should have said 'get a life!'. As for the part of you telling to "go f**k myself", I'm not sure I'm the one who needs to keep their potty little vagina mouth comebacks to themselves.
DioFoRio - 1/26/2012, 2:40 PM
salvation was so full of glaring plot holes that I hope they don't continue that version of the story line at all. They should focus on a band of new characters fighting in the future. Having john Conner make appearances via radio transmissions or brief cameos. Have that group find some terminators going to the past and the group follows. boom, done.
