The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that pre-release tracking for Joss Whedon/Marvel Studios' highly anticipated superhero teamup film The Avengers could have one of the biggest opening weekends of all time for a suphero pic, if not one of the biggest period. Tracking shows that the film, which opens next month in North America, is pacing ahead of 2008's The Dark Knight, which opened to $158M in its opening weekend (holding the title for top opener of all time domestically until Harry Potter 7.2 debuted to $169M last summer). The Avengers is also tracking ahead of the recently released The Hunger Games, which debuted to $152M last month.

Off the heels of John Carter underperforming, The Avengers should be a sizeable box office victory for Walt Disney. According to first tracking, unaided awareness in The Avengers is 13%, compared to 10% for The Dark Knight and 11% for The Hunger Games; first choice is 23%, tying with The Hunger Games and compared to 19% for The Dark Knight. Total awareness for The Avengers is 85%, compared to 76% for The Dark Knight and 74% for The Hunger Games; definite interest is 61%, versus 62% for The Dark Knight and 54% for The Hunger Games. Stay tuned for more box office predictions closer to The Avengers' release.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Renner, The Avengers is set to hit UK theaters April 26th and US theaters May 4th.

MovieMaster - 4/16/2012, 8:28 AM
I'm not knowledgable about this shit. If Avengers made around $160m in it's opening weekend, would that make it #2 behind Harry Potter?
JordanKing - 4/16/2012, 8:29 AM
@MovieMaster Yep, TDK had an opening of $158m
Cerebro - 4/16/2012, 8:32 AM
This is good news for comic book movie fans.
LAXtremest - 4/16/2012, 8:38 AM
@JDUKE25- I bought mine a couple weeks ago. In California.
marvel72 - 4/16/2012, 8:40 AM
wouldn't surprise me if its as good as people are saying.
MovieMaster - 4/16/2012, 8:42 AM
O_O now whenever somebody at school says Avengers won't make much money, I'll have this article at the ready.
JDUKE25 - 4/16/2012, 8:43 AM
Oh ok, I've checked on fandango the past couple of days and each time it says there aren't any showtimes available yet. I'm starting to get impatient.
TheDetectiveComicRises - 4/16/2012, 8:46 AM
@RamonSuarez low blow comment & U know nothing apparently about anticipated films & just imagine what TDKR will do ;)
Coldblood6 - 4/16/2012, 8:46 AM
@ RamonSuarez

YOU KNOW IT!
thalidomide - 4/16/2012, 8:48 AM
oh yeah 9 [frick]ing days! I can't believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LAXtremest - 4/16/2012, 8:49 AM
I think all 3 CBM's are gonna make a shit ton of money. Which is good news for us.
thewonderer - 4/16/2012, 8:51 AM
@Ramon

Its a sad day when 4 superheroes in one film have to team together to take on the titan that is Batman

Sorry, no fanboyism here, you started it. Everyone hear knows its the concept thats appealing to casual people. IM2 made the most at around 600 million I believe...which leads me to say that no one really cares for the characters but the idea

GizmoEl - 4/16/2012, 8:53 AM
Bought my tickets a few weeks back. Make sure you're searching for show times on may 3, not 4th.

I'm so glad my theater has reserved seating. I managed to book the perfect seats right in the middle. Don't have to worry about lines or any of that bullshit.
thalidomide - 4/16/2012, 8:54 AM
@RamonSuarez

Don't start shit like that.
Dev7 - 4/16/2012, 8:56 AM
I think it'll make around 175 Million Opening Weekend but it will be difficult to hold on to No. 1 consecutive weekends with some of the movies coming out soon after.
Ranger14 - 4/16/2012, 9:00 AM
Box office means little to me. TDKR will do well because it is the conclusion of an already successful trilogy. If Box office dictates what movies I am suppose to like and what are the best movies, I am not on track with that at all. Avatar, Titanic, Harry Potter....meh. TDKR was alright for what it was. Some of my favorite movies were not big box office blockbusters. Marketing, hype and habit are usually what drive the box office.
LAXtremest - 4/16/2012, 9:01 AM
@Gizmo- Now that's awesome. I went to the midnight showing of Iron Man 2 and my buddy and I couldn't even sit together. It was a free for all for seating.
Squish - 4/16/2012, 9:01 AM
And the wonderer has to come in here and troll. Nobody has said anything about TDKR. Both movies will be great so stop trying to rationalize that Batman always has to be the best and that there is no comparison.
TheHitchhikingGhost - 4/16/2012, 9:02 AM
This is going to have fantastic re-visit value. People are going to pay to see this over and over again.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 4/16/2012, 9:03 AM
It really didn't take Ledger's death to make Dark Knight a winner at the box office. It was a great CBM. I think Avengers, TDKR and Spidey will have excellent box office results, Prometheus and Battleship should do well alsp. It's going to be a great summer at the movies!
Dev7 - 4/16/2012, 9:04 AM
RamonSuarez And Avengers didn't have the free publicity of a major star's death to add to the film's promotion.

Would you people quit your comparison and trolling behaviour.
HumanTorch83 - 4/16/2012, 9:05 AM
I think the movie will break Harry Potter's record.
There are ridiculous amounts of people hyped for this movie... Plus all these reviews from people who have seen it are overwhelmingly positive, people want to see it for themselves, and if they really did shoot another scene, it will have almost all the people who saw it already go see it again.

I have my midnight tickets since early March, and I'm planning on going to see it again Friday and Saturday night.

I'm calling $175 opening weekend
Squish - 4/16/2012, 9:05 AM
Its obvious that ledgers death contributed a little bit to Batmans box office success but who cares. Its still a great movie!
Gerrit - 4/16/2012, 9:06 AM
If this movie is good enough and Disney and Marvel Studios do the markting right, The Avengers could possibly make more than 1 billion worldwide.

And for the record, saying that Ledger's death didn't boost anticipation for TDK is just stupid. It's sad but it's true. TDK was benefited because Ledger's death was said to be related specifically with the Joker. At least here in Brazil.
TheHitchhikingGhost - 4/16/2012, 9:07 AM
The Dark Knight was a massive hit because Batman Begins was a damn fine reboot that got everyone excited for the next chapter. Mix that with having one of the greatest villains in CB history head-lining, paired with the fact that it turned out ot be an excellent film; and there you have it. I guarantee Ledger's death contributed by way of a morbid curiosity, but the film itself carried it to the glory it now holds.
TheHitchhikingGhost - 4/16/2012, 9:08 AM
...and if you're not excited for THE AVENGERS, you're not human.
Ha1frican - 4/16/2012, 9:08 AM
I don't care about it beating TDK ( I love the Batman franchise just as much as the MCU)i just want it to do well enough that it gets the attention of the main stream like Iron an, and TDK did, so that it will gain momentum for projects like Ant-Man and Black Panther. Could even improve the budgets of all the MCU films because if Avengers is a huge hit more than just the CBM community will go see tie-ins to the next Avengers.
Squish - 4/16/2012, 9:11 AM
The trolls are the worst
HumanTorch83 - 4/16/2012, 9:13 AM
For The Dark Knight... I DID get a boost from Ledgers death... The general public thought it was his last movie, also the rumors that he had to stay hyped on drugs to "be" the Joker made everyone say "Wow I must see what this role is"

But In NO WAY AT ALL, does that take away the fact that people KEPT COMING BACK, to see it because it was one of the most fantastic movies ever.
FightmasterNoel - 4/16/2012, 9:18 AM
And Nick Fury says "HOOHAH!"
Tainted87 - 4/16/2012, 9:20 AM
The Avengers has a lot of movies against it compared to TDKR.
MIB 3, the Dictator, Dark Shadows, (yes I'm going to say it) Battleship, and even Hunger Games pose a bit of a competition at the Box Office.

While sure, Box Office take doesn't mean greatness, the reason I would be concerned about it is the BUDGET... that being set at allegedly $220 million, but I imagine it is much more than that. It needs to make Hunger Games take the bronze.
GingerBird - 4/16/2012, 9:21 AM
Man that 3D conversion is really paying off.
thalidomide - 4/16/2012, 9:22 AM
Just because someone said something bad about your favorite movie you're hoping that his kids will get AIDS? Wow that is so very mature -__-
Tainted87 - 4/16/2012, 9:23 AM
I didn't care about Heath Ledger until he was cast in The Dark Knight. Then I started getting into his movies, and there were a lot of comedies, a lot of indie films, and then Brokeback Mountain, which is a great movie on it's own.

Leave your homophobia and gay prejudice at the door please.
FightmasterNoel - 4/16/2012, 9:23 AM
@just1superguy
Heath has been in more films, not many major ones but enough smallish films to be a pretty popular actor one of those films that was kinda a small project but still popular was '10 things i hate about you' plus,he was in 'A Knights tale' And 'The patriot' So do ur reseaerch before atacking. u sir are the true idiot.
thewonderer - 4/16/2012, 9:25 AM
You know 3D is a cheap way to get extra profits, and people have said the Avengers 3D sucks monkey balls.

Completely disregarding the films themselves, I have a lot of respect for Nolan says a big No to Warner Bros. in adding shitty 3D in his film. Would've made him a lot more money, thats for sure. Glad to see we still have directors fighting against crappy 3D, its a shame no one did that here.

Still gonna watch Avengers regularly and enjoy the hell out of it
ironknight - 4/16/2012, 9:32 AM
What a little kid thing to say. "You started it!" People stop whining about which will make more money. They both will make enough to guarantee more, and they will both be awesome in their own way, So please, everyone, stow it. I'm so sick of seeing the arguing.
Ranger14 - 4/16/2012, 9:32 AM
MIB3 is about the only movie that I think will have a decent box office draw to be a true competitor to the Avengers. Hunger Games will be dropping off once it gets some competition because it has had no competition to date.

I am not the least bit concerned that the Avengers will well over-double its budget.
