Earlier today, it was confirmed by director Peter Jackson that a third film based on The Hobbit is in the works, and a summer 2014 release is being eyed. Now, Fusible has found the following domain purchases which may reveal two possible titles for the third movie in the Hobbit trilogy. MarkMonitor - who previously managed the domains for TheHobbitAnUnexpectedJourney.com and TheHobbitThereandBackagain.com - have purchased several domains last week. Below are the domains:

http://whois.domaintools.com/riddlesindark.com
http://whois.domaintools.com/thedesolationofsmaug.com

So it looks like The Hobbit: Part 3 may be titled The Hobbit: Riddles In The Dark or The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. The former is a title of one of the chapters in The Hobbit novel, while the latter refers to the lair of Smaug (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). Especially as the chapter "Riddles In The Dark" takes place during the narrative span of An Unexpected Journey, it's certainly possible that these titles are not for the movie at all; perhaps they may have been purchased for a marketing viral or a tie-in of some sort.

Expect an announcement to be made within the next few months. In the mean time, check out An Unexpected Journey in theaters December 14th, while There And Back Again is slated for a December 13th, 2013 release.

If they make the movies good I guess I don't mind them doing 3. Seems stretching it a bit though.
Helena - 7/30/2012, 12:21 PM
If I had to guess they will rename the second one Riddles In The Dark because calling a middle chapter There And Back Again makes no sense and call the last one The Desolation Of Smaug.
Koonel - 7/30/2012, 12:22 PM
As much as I'm looking forward to these movies, it's funny that they adapted a 1200 page book into three movies, and that they are adapting a 300 page book into three movies as well. They could have used the six book format of Lord of the Rings, and told the whole story. I would have liked to see the true Faramir on screen because he was bad ass in the books.
marvel72 - 7/30/2012, 12:26 PM
i thought the title would be.........

THE HOBBIT PART 3 $$$$$$$$$$

Unexpected Journey, Riddles in the Dark, There and back again. That is how it will be. They are using more sourrce material then just The Hobbit.
ralfinader - 7/30/2012, 12:40 PM
@SotoJuiceMan - So Jackson decided Frodo shot first? Or was it that Gandalf built C3P0? How is this anyway like the crap Lucas pulled? Please elaborate.

"If I had to guess they will rename the second one Riddles In The Dark because calling a middle chapter There And Back Again makes no sense and call the last one The Desolation Of Smaug." - Agreed, the second movie will likely get a name change.
GreenHalJordan - 7/30/2012, 12:40 PM
THIS IS SO STUPID! I dont want 2 films split into 3, it works perfectly as a two part thing.
PeterParker1991 - 7/30/2012, 12:41 PM
Nice. I say bring it. He won't let us down
Joker08 - 7/30/2012, 12:42 PM
"THE HOBBIT - Part 2: There And Back Again Part 2
: Blinded By Their Greed" seems fitting.
luxterg - 7/30/2012, 12:44 PM
I don't know why people are so against this. Have you all forgotten how amazing the LOTR trilogy was? Even though the hobbit is a shorter story, do people really think there isn't enough in there to make three extremely amazing movies? Have we lost faith in Peter Jackson so much that we don't believe he's gonna be ruthless in making three incredible movies?!?!?!

I for one am PUMPED that there will be a third one!! The more the better, EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU will be running to see all three. ALL OF YOU lol. Money grab? Sure... but whatever, it'll still be awesome!!
IrfonW - 7/30/2012, 12:44 PM
No, sounds more like film 2 if they call it riddles in the dark
UltimateSpiderman - 7/30/2012, 12:46 PM
Why would they call it "Riddles In The Dark"? That part takes place in the first movie.

Desolation of Smaug is shit, but makes more sense.
worldbreaker - 7/30/2012, 12:47 PM
in this trilogy they'll measure wizards power by the amount of midichlorean they have in their system...

i cant wait for these. i'm going to start camping at the theater now
maxleresistant - 7/30/2012, 12:47 PM
Ok boys, one thing you have to know, Kill Bill originally was supposed to be only one movie. It became a two part movie in post production. And it was [frick]ing awesome.

Have faith!
95 - 7/30/2012, 12:48 PM
The Desolation Of Smaug! Might even skip the previous two, catch the possible Theater Marathon (in 2015?) and then watch Part Three at Midnight. Rather just get to the good part and not get stuck with a "To Be Continued..." ending and then have to wait a year.

How about:

The Hobbit: We Can't Do This Anymore
ckal - 7/30/2012, 12:54 PM
So part 2 will not actually be "there and back again" will it?
timotey - 7/30/2012, 12:56 PM
Seriously, people, you haven't seen the movies yet, you don't know how they will be cut or what will be added and you are already PISSING AND MOANING! Grow up!

As I wrote before: If they now really used the LotR appendices to expand the story and then split it into two films and then use Tolkien’s notes to make a third movie filling the gap to LotR I'd be all fine with that. No, more, I would love that. I'm bagging them to do that. But please no cliffhanger; make each movie have a plausible end for its certain story.

But if they instead just stretch the short Hobbit book into 3 movies while they did the opposite with LotR where each book consists of two volumes, then I'll be pissed.

So make 3 Movies

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again as planned, using the Hobbit book and the appendices from LotR or come even up with a great new title for the third movie, Tolkien’s untold story what happened between the Hobbit and LotR. Each movie about 2 hours.

And then convert LotR (the extended edition) into 3D – do it good take your time like James Cameron did with Titanic – ad some further unused footage, half an hour to an hour for each movie, and then split each movie into two each about 2 hours long. Then we would finally have the six parts The Lord of the Rings: The Ring Sets Out, The Lord of the Rings: The Ring Goes South, The Lord of the Rings: The Ring Goes South, The Lord of the Rings: The Treason of Isengard, The Lord of the Rings: The Ring Goes East, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. That would be so epic.

But at least the last will most likely never happen, but one may dream.
Gmoney84 - 7/30/2012, 1:27 PM
I'm pumped!! Bring it, Pete!!

I'm fine with 3rd & RIDDLES OF DARK.

The Hobbit: Give me your money and get out
Jollem - 7/30/2012, 1:42 PM
if they made 7 hobbit films i'd probably watch them all. why be irked that people are making a movie? would people be irked if they would make a fourth or fifth avengers movie? would people be irked if they were going to make five justice league movies?(aside from the dc bullies and the marvel bullies, respectively)
LoudNoises - 7/30/2012, 1:45 PM
Isn't Riddles in the Dark the chapter where Bilbo is exchanging riddles with Gollum in order to escape his cave alive. And if that's the case, doesn't this happen in the first movie? We even saw it in the trailers. Why would they consider naming the third movie Riddles in the Dark? Maybe someone can straighten me out here?
LoudNoises - 7/30/2012, 1:49 PM
Actually, now that I think about it, they would probably save There and Back Again for the 3rd movie and rename the 2nd movie. That would make more sense.
supermarioworldE - 7/30/2012, 1:57 PM
The Hobbit There and Back Again (Again) or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Blatant Cash Grab!

@timotey Don't forget: The entitled, clamoring fanboys always know best. They know because of reasons, dammit!

I'm fine with this. I'm a huge LOTR fan. Peter Jackson can't exactly mess this up… can he?
Mucklefluga - 7/30/2012, 2:13 PM
WHATS SO BAD ABOUT A THIRD FILM!!!!
BillyBatson1000 - 7/30/2012, 2:27 PM
Let me guess the titles. Rip off the fanbase 1, Rip off the fanbase 2, Rip off the fanbase 3. Love the first 2 film. Not going to these. Sick of this sh*t.
ParalyserPro - 7/30/2012, 3:25 PM
I have to laugh at fanboys sometimes. So, you were happy when they announced the movies would be made, but you're angry that they're adding an extra one? Durrrrrrp.

I can't see how this is bad news for the fans. Do you like Middle Earth movies or don't you?
beane2099 - 7/30/2012, 3:31 PM
I was apprehensive about this at first but I'm ok with it now (as if I had a choice, haw). Anyways, according to Jackson he's also using material from the LOTR appendices and such, including things like the full fight between Gandalf and the Necromancer. Given that, I think 3 movies is a good idea. Let Peter Jackson craft his hexology.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 7/30/2012, 3:42 PM
The third one should be called There and Back again.
EarOne - 7/30/2012, 3:47 PM
as brilliant as he is...now i gotta say it. Peter Jackson just likes to stretch things waaaaaayyyyyy too much. i felt this with Return of the King, then with King Kong (i still like both movies), but then THIS.

i'd rather him doing the simarillon (is that the right spelling) story, IF he's that desperate to do a third middle earth film. but stretching a one short novel into THREE (3) movies...that's just pushing it too far.

i even think if Jackson & co. keep this course, they might just have another certified flop, right after Lovely Bones. PLEASE..keep it a two-movie deal, mr. jackson. don't get blinded by $$$$$$$$
CrimsonReign - 7/30/2012, 4:05 PM
Riddles in the Dark!!
Fogs - 7/30/2012, 5:48 PM
The Desolation Of Smaug. Cool as hell.

People bitching about the 3rd movie don't know they're covering the attack and fall of Dol Guldur and the Necromancer (not detailed in the book), right?
Tymminator - 7/30/2012, 6:59 PM
Im good with this. Rather have it split into three and get all footage then split it in two and only get 75-80%, then having to by a separate DC to get it all. Hell, this wil probably encourage Jackson to even put in more extra material that would really flesh it out.

If they make 3 one and a half hour long movies, I will complain, but if they make 3 movies 2 hours plus a piece, that's fine with me.
TheAbomination - 7/30/2012, 8:02 PM
It'll probably be Riddles in the Dark. But for some reason, The Desolation Of Smaug sounds much more badass.
norseman79 - 7/30/2012, 9:24 PM
Love lotr and I'm sure I'll love these. The more the merrier.
CrowPirate1 - 7/31/2012, 5:29 AM
how about..

Hobbit 3: Return of the Jedi Hobbits
CrowPirate1 - 7/31/2012, 5:30 AM
Hobbit 3 and the Last Crusade?
CrowPirate1 - 7/31/2012, 5:31 AM
or Pirates 3: the beating of a dead horse. [cough] I'll shut up now. heh
flannelmandude - 7/31/2012, 9:37 AM
I think its good to make 3 movies. They left sooooo much out of the LOTR trilogy because there is too much going in in the books to put everything onto the screen. This way with 3 movies out of just the one Hobbit book they will hopefully be able to keep most of the content in.
