Gavin Hood Interested in X-Men Origins: Magneto

The director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine says Magneto is a "phenomenally interesting character."
Love it or hate it, X-Men Origins: Wolverine performed well enough at the box office and in pre-release DVD sales to guarantee that there will be another chapter in the X-Men franchise. Recently, while promoting the DVD release of Wolverine, director Gavin Hood confessed that he would like to take a crack at the X-Men's arch-nemesis, Magneto. Hood said:

"I think the character of Magneto is still a phenomenally interesting character.

"He’s certainly a very interesting character—one rooted in childhood trauma and psychologically complex—and one that was superbly played by Ian McKellen. There are certain characters in the X-Men universe whose psychological life is strong and fascinating and complex. I think that’s why they’re appealing to audiences."

When asked if he would be interested in directing a feature film starring Magneto, Hood said:

"Absolutely, if I was asked I’d take an interest."

Oh hell no! He [frick]ed up Wolverine already. Keep him the hell away from the movie. I dont want to see Xavier being crippled by adamantium bullets, Magneto randomly losing his accent and Scarlet Witch becoming Magneto's wife! lol And ironically the Wolverine advertisement in the corner came up at just the right time as I just happened to pause it on the one reason I dont want Gavin directing Magneto: Stretch Armstrong bad rubber CGI Xavier!

So no to Gavin for Magneto or any other X-Men movie but who do you guys think would be a good director for Magneto? And not Zack Snyder, he is awesome and all but I would rather see him for Wolverine 2 or an X-Men 4 or first class movie

Great article as usual, Brent
dancingmonkey08 - 9/21/2009, 11:29 AM
Someone like Ridley Scott would be a great director for Magneto, even though I don't really think a movie about him is necessary. He's known for his period pieces, but can also make great sci-fi (Alien) and action/drama movies (Body of Lies)

And yeah, I'd rather see Snyder with Wolvie 2.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 11:32 AM
I'm probably the only X-Men fan who doesn't like Magneto, but I just think the character is waaaaay over-used already. I'm tired of him. How about Mr. Sinister or, better yet, Apocalypse?
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 11:34 AM
It can't be Snyder. Snyder does things frame by frame from the books. The way the movie-verse is set up that can't work.

If he had been on the project to begin with yes. But he wasn't and therefore doesn't fit.
Michael Galusick - 9/21/2009, 11:35 AM
i agree with tyler, ridley scott would be cool but i also like james cameron. but i would like to see a movie about a differnt x-men character, like how about jean gray?
Mileena16 - 9/21/2009, 11:45 AM
Sinister! Apocalypse! No Magneto!!!
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 11:47 AM
three movies i'd like to see would be about deadpool, gambit....and nightcrawler, i mean why not lol
NJdevil12 - 9/21/2009, 11:48 AM
@ InTylerWeTrust

I like your idea of Ridley Scott, he would do a great job as Alien was brilliant

And I know where you are coming from when you mean Magneto should not really be made. I used to think that way too but I thought it would be great if they combined Magneto and Xavier's origins and make a movie that leads right up to the original teams of X-Men and Brotherhood being assembled and then First Class can lead on from there. But first, I would love to see a good Wolverine 2, X4 & X5 before the original actors get too old for their roles and then they could make the Days of future past movies as the actors being too old would suit the characters being old and THEN the prequels should be made

@ Bijous

And hell yea for Sinister and Apoclaypse, I would only want to see Magneto as a villain one more time in a prequel to show the first battle between the X-Men and the original Brotherhood from the comics
dancingmonkey08 - 9/21/2009, 11:51 AM
When is Colossus going to get his day in the sun? He's my favorite X-Man--cool power, cool costume, cool accent--but he always gets the shaft!
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 11:51 AM
APOCALYPSE is okay but isn't he pretty much just a generic version of DARKSEID??
gibbyblaylock - 9/21/2009, 11:57 AM
Well i'd take Gavin Hood wwaaaayyyyy before Goyer who was actually originally slated to direct! Be honest with yourselves. Which one was better? Blade Trinity or Wolverine???
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 11:59 AM
Apocalypse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Axl - 9/21/2009, 12:03 PM

"Aw Helllll Nawww!!!"
Kes - 9/21/2009, 12:05 PM
Bijous, I have to disagree and agree with you, with respect of course. I love Magneto as a villain, I think he's one of the best Marvel sorta-evil villain. However, I agree that Apocalypse should get the spotlight in one of the X-films. I've always thoght that they should put him against Magneto and Xavier in the Magneto Origin film. Sort of "an ultimate battle" senario.
airbeyonder18 - 9/21/2009, 12:05 PM
Bijous couldn't agree with you
more
SdProphet - 9/21/2009, 12:06 PM
Yes, please Gavin, Screw up another character from the Xmen universe
Cape - 9/21/2009, 12:10 PM
@gibby: No, no, no, Apocalypse is nothing like Darkseid in powers, origin or motivation. You're thinking of that hack FF villain, Terrax.

@airbeyonder: It's not that I didn't think Magneto was a good villain at one point, but c'mon, that dude is always coming back for more. I'm just sayin' that there's plenty of other villains that could be explored is all. We've already seen Mags in 3 movies; isn't that enough?

Maybe Sinister will be in X-Men: First Class, since he used to mess around with Scott's DNA in the comics.

Bring on Colossus!!!!
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:10 PM
i downloaded Wolverine and I have to say I actually liked it this time around. When I saw it in theaters I was a little narrow minded about it but I think it was an overall good job. Beside the fact that Deadpool is like Sylar basically.

I dont really care who directs it, as long as Brett Ratner never touches another comic book movie again. I wanna kill that piece of shit. He makes movies to piss people off and thats it. He should have directed GI Joe and then that would have been truely garbage
LaffaTaffa - 9/21/2009, 12:11 PM
NO NO NO NO! NOT AFTER WHAT HE DID TO WOLVERINE!
davidzuck - 9/21/2009, 12:11 PM
Thanx SdProphet!
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:12 PM
I agree. It's time to get Apocalyptic with the X-Men movies :)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 12:12 PM

Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:13 PM

Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:16 PM
Apocolypse has no substance as a character, Magneto is more complex and infinatly more interesting. he's a mutant before the world knows about mutants an intelligent and powerful one at that.

The Magneto origins is probably more suited to gavin hood's style than an all out action movie.

if it's made correctly this could be such an amazing film. but if it's full of random x-men cameos they'll destroy it
Robsaggs - 9/21/2009, 12:17 PM
I THINK A 'SOLO' MAGNETO FILM, WOULD BE VERY BORING
dellamorte1872 - 9/21/2009, 12:17 PM
@Robsaggs: I'm tired of the current CBM movies because they try too hard for "substance." Am I the only one who wants action? I mean, we're talking about superheroes here! I want fights, explosions, laser beams!!!!
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:20 PM
APOCOLYPSE IS "TECHNIQUALLY" THE FIRST MUTANT LOL
dellamorte1872 - 9/21/2009, 12:20 PM
...and a good story, of course.
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:21 PM
I'm with you Bijous...I want a real superhero movie, action, action and more action with a hell of a lot of super powers being used.
spideysweb - 9/21/2009, 12:27 PM
XMOW was nice directed. the overall story was more faithfull to the comics than the x-trilogy
Denn1s - 9/21/2009, 12:29 PM
I agree Robsaggs! A Magneto film would be awesome.. He is a very interesting and complex character.. Especially if they can utilise Charles Xavier! Now those two have history!

And I know this would never happen but how about making a few changes and have Captain America coming across a young Magneto in World War 2!!!!!
Imran - 9/21/2009, 12:29 PM
Cool but unnecessary. Magneto is a deep, complex character but I dont see him carrying a movie in the same way others could. One of the biggest reason is that he is a villian, and whenever they make a movie about a villian, they want you to sympathize with him. Thats great and all, but it takes away from the darkness of the character. I doubt they will show magneto doing evil deeds like massacring innocent humans in the name of human progress. Likely, they will show him as the victim, and by the end, you will want to kill all humans to along with him. That takes away the 'badguy factor.' Still, it definately has the potential to be an interesting movie.
Shadowelfz - 9/21/2009, 12:30 PM
@BIJOUS WASNT Colossus IN X3?
Swiftsword777 - 9/21/2009, 12:31 PM
@Robsaggs. Apocalypse is one of the most interesting and complex villains the X-Men faced. He is near immortal, the "First Mutant". He believes in Social Darwinism. He has an unusual sense of honor that surprises many. And he looks cool as hell.

-Michael Clark Duncan

But most imortantly, he was responsible for the birth of the greatest Marvel comics villain of all time, Mister Sinister.

Mister Sinister (Nathaniel Essex)

-Keith David or Jason Isaacs

Miss Sinister

-Carla Guigo

THEHAWK - 9/21/2009, 12:31 PM
@swiftsword...Yes he was but it was like a 2second part. He is a cool character and wish we would have seen more of him.

Isaacs (IMO) is wrong for sinister. Not sure who I like yet but Isaacs doesn't do it for me.
spideysweb - 9/21/2009, 12:35 PM
@TheHawk: Hell, yeah, bro!

@Swift: Yeah, and in X2, but just barely. Still, he never gets featured in the comics and he was barely in the X-Men movies, yet he's one of their most powerful members.

@Imran: Next you'll be saying that the young Magneto made Cap's first shield for him out of metal scraps...
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:36 PM
Yep, Duncan is absolutely perfect for Apocalypse. There is no other actor out there that comes close to him as Apoc.

I'd go with Keith David as Sinister, but Isaacs is a good choice as well.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 12:38 PM
I also think that Magneto shouldn't have a movie. Let's move on with X-4!!! Michael Clark Duncan for Apocalypse, Keith David for Mr. Sinister and Michael Biehn as Cable!!!

Shaman - 9/21/2009, 12:38 PM
@Shaman: thumbs up, mate!
Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:40 PM
if anyone thinks that Gavin Hood is responsible for Wolverine's shortcomings - give it up. Dude's an extremely talented director who ended up getting face fisted by hollywood execs who overpowered everything he usually does creative-wise.

he's a small time dude who got pushed around getting to the big time - not his fault. if you think it is you're being a stupid peen.
Keven - 9/21/2009, 12:42 PM
uuooh this reminds me of anakin skywalker. if this happens, now we all get to see a origin of a hero turn villain.
prototype 3D - 9/21/2009, 12:42 PM
but if you have a bad guy as the focus you have to be able to sympathise with them. Magneto is a villan not out to rule the world but to make the world a better place through extreme measures, but is still human and has friendships such as his and charles' and has a family. I don't see this being an action movie but just a great story with action sequences.

there'll be plenty of other movies coming up for the all out action, iron man 2, thor, etc etc

but for Magneto i see it being a complete character driven story.
Robsaggs - 9/21/2009, 12:45 PM
Thanks Bijous ;)

Head on over to the Editorial page for my Lobo Sketch :))
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 12:46 PM
this neither excites or disappoints me, rlly. I thought wolverine was a decet film, but it could have been better.
o ya, shaman, awesome drawins, especially cable

woo hoo!
jallanr - 9/21/2009, 12:50 PM
They could make a Magneto film good, I just think it is wholly unnecessary. I don't think there is a very good reason to go back and show how he got to X-Men 1 is all.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 12:56 PM
Myth would disagree but i'm with Tyler on this.

jallanr- WOOHOO!!! :))
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 12:58 PM
@Shaman. Not bad art, but I don't think the public or the directors would like to see him as apocolypse. I don't know, maybe it's because I saw him play Kingpin in DD or he just scarred me with his cheesy ape outfit in Tim B's Planet of the Apes.
airbeyonder18 - 9/21/2009, 1:00 PM
I love magneto as a character, and his origin is cool but I've already seen Schindler's List, I don't need to see it again but with super powers.
thwhtGuardian - 9/21/2009, 1:03 PM
I know that this isnt a popular opinion but i would really have little to no interest in a Magneto solo movie - his origins are not all that interesting (and could be done in about 20-30mins IMO) and after seeing the character for 3 movies, i dont really need a whole movie based on the fairly un-interesting character.
joshw24 - 9/21/2009, 1:10 PM
@thwhtknight: I don't know, I have always wanted to see him and Xavier work toghether. Plus they both can fight Apocalypse as the main villain and Mr. Sinister, the 4 most powerful mutants facing against each other. Then they can cast Mag. aside and put other villains in the X-movies, like Sauron or more showings of the Sentinals.
airbeyonder18 - 9/21/2009, 1:13 PM
@ Keven: What's a peen?

No matter whose fault it was last time around, what reason do we have to expect any more out of this one?

None. None at all.

Of course it's always possible that things could turn out great, and the movie will be epic but given recent events a healthy round of scepticism is to be expected.
DarthMulder - 9/21/2009, 1:14 PM
Magneto is a great character, don't get me wrong. That's the only part I disagree with you on Josh. But yeah, I probably wouldn't shell out 10 bucks or more to see the movie if it came out, his origin just isn't interesting to me.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 1:15 PM
TYLER: I really like the current incarnation of Magneto in the comic books especially after years of him seemingly being the go-to villain for the X-Men to fight but its the movie version Ive grown really bored of. I've had 3 movies to understand his motives as you said i dont know if i want to pay to see the origins behind something thats been explained already!
joshw24 - 9/21/2009, 1:26 PM
Simple fact, if Hulk and Wolverine didn't bring in the numbers that were expected of them, then Magneto doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell at breaking even. When the icons can't bring in strong revenue then it's time to realize what a horrible idea Magneto is. I doubt that Marvel, or Disney are looking for a flop, unless used as a tax write off.
ASSASSIN666 - 9/21/2009, 1:28 PM
Josh: Yeah, Mags in the movies did get pretty tiresome after 3 times as the main baddie.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 1:29 PM
@ robbsaggs

apoc has a LOT of substance, especially considering the fact that he was born into slavery in ancient egypt, and his struggle to supremacy in those times. not to mention everything he went through to get to the present times. he's got a lot of substance, man.

and no, apoc is not a rip off of darkseid..in any way shape or form
CorndogBurglar - 9/21/2009, 1:31 PM
Magneto's cool, but Sinister, and Apacolypse are so vicious. The experiments, the time traveling. the hatred against both human and mutant alike. that's what we need in our next story. I would rather x-men first class have all those elements. Let the story be broken up into three movies. From the Beginning with Apacolypse and ending with Magneto and Charles parting ways. It's a story that can involve all elements include many different characters of the x-men universe.
StrangemannX09 - 9/21/2009, 1:35 PM
airbeyonder18- Actually, the public knows dick about MCD being Kingpin in a movie that will actually be rebooted. And with all the make up and effects that make Apocalypse, they won't complain. MCD is by the majority of the fans, the very best choice for Apocalypse.
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 1:35 PM
loll Bijous.. And he could make Caps shield out of scrap metal! :-P

Haha.. Let's turn things on their head.. HOUSE OF M Style! lolll
Imran - 9/21/2009, 1:46 PM
I say no Magneto movie. Have his origins a bit more explained in X-Men First Class and have him lead Charles' X-men into battle. Then end the film with the scuffle between Eric and Charles. By the 3 x-films' continuity, Erik will be in his 50ies. So i'll say the same as Tyler yet again: Ed Harris for Magneto!!!

Shaman - 9/21/2009, 1:46 PM
Have to agree.. MCD is a great choice of Apocalypse
Imran - 9/21/2009, 1:47 PM
Woah.. Shaman, that artwork is immense!! CABLE!!
Imran - 9/21/2009, 1:49 PM
Hell yes Shaman!

Ed Harris IS Magneto!

InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 1:53 PM
Imran- Yeah, i did outdo myself with that one... The suckah's hard to beat LOL :P

Tyler- Honestly, they should have gone with him from the beggining. I liked Ian but he was Gandalf, not Mags. Erik shouldn't apear brittle. He should be fierce like General Hummel in "The Rock"!!! Ed Harris IS Magneto!!!
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 1:54 PM
Yeah, I agree. McKellan just never seemed like the ultra-powerful force Magneto should be. I was never really intimidated by him, but I guess that's the direction they decided to go for in those movies.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/21/2009, 1:58 PM
Man, the more i think about it, the more First Class has a chance at "right-ing" every "wrong"! Even without a reboot!!!
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 2:01 PM
Shaman: Brilliant! I dont think Ive seen that before! Ive never seen the guy act but if i wasnt sure he was the right choice for Magneto before, i am now thanks to you!!! :)
joshw24 - 9/21/2009, 2:02 PM
I agree with all of you about Mr Sinister and Apocalypse being in an X-Men movie. Too bad Bret Fagner destroyed X3. I can't see Mr Sinister without Cyclops.

@ Shaman: Cool pics, as always. I think the one with Cable is still my favorite. I can tell exactly who you were drawing.
BmanHall - 9/21/2009, 2:04 PM
wow who could possibly think this is a good idea? Wolverine origins SUCKED... I just watched it again last night. They already need to reboot deadpool because of his lousey movie and come one hte GCI sucked, the story sucked, the action could have been great but even that was stupid. the fights were short when the should have been long, and when they have long fights, they were stupid
fotc - 9/21/2009, 2:12 PM
Jason Isaacs is way better than keith david for the role of sinister I ALSO LIKE HUGO WEAVING FOR SINISTER
Swiftsword777 - 9/21/2009, 2:14 PM
@ fotc: Hahaha, I know what you mean about the fights. When I was watching Gambit squirm around and climbing the [frick]ing alley walls, I was in tears. Mostly from laughing. Even though I was dying inside... <=(

Awesome job Shaman!

Dude my problem with the wolverine movie. I'm sure like many other fans is basically the previews were cool. The first 15 min of the film was going somewhere, and then all of a sudden i wanted to walk out the theatre. I would give Hood a chance but If he's gonna be the next Shamalan. KISS MY F***n ass

kyle dalton - 9/21/2009, 9:12 PM
After watching Origins a few more times, and listening to Hood and Jackman in their approach, I have a greater respect for the film. And just on a visceral level, I like it now - it's grown on me. I think one of the problems is there is just so much great Wolverine to pick from - if they'd JUST have included him in the Weapon X suit with the polar bear, that would've pushed it up to very good for me. But no blood was ridiculous - I'm on the bandwagon for Snyder to direct II.

They wanted to show what a shitstorm Wolvie had been through in his 180 or so years, and they did a pretty good job on that, in my opinion. Granted they took a hell of alot of license. And I'd say the young mutants were pushed on Hood to contractually grab some of the better characters.

By the way, I think the "adamantium bullet" thing's an homage to the great wherewolf films of cinema history. Like Wolfman. I can accept that.

I'd enjoy Magneto, but would prefer Prof. X. (or together) - talk about a "psychologically interesting character". I think Hood could do well on both, but like the Ridley Scott idea alot - Xellent pick lol.

Think about it... forget Schindler's List, hell INGLORIOUS BASTERDS DONE MAGNETO STYLE. F'ing BAD ASS!

An "action" I mean come on, Magneto can do whatever he wants with metal. He just needs to hit downtown Manhattan for a couple hours Ridley Scott style.

Prefer Clive Owen in most roles. Would make a mindblowing Magneto. Ed Harris is great too, second pick for me. It'd be a great way to introduce Sinister, Apocalypse, and/or Cable... but hell Cable can pop up anywhere. Also have some more Deadpool potential with Magneto.

48and2 - 9/21/2009, 10:40 PM
JEREMY IRONS FOR MAGNETO!!!!
sadmamba - 9/22/2009, 2:22 AM
For the love of God, DO NOT LET GAVIN HOOD GET ANY WHERE NEAR THIS!!!!!
He totally screwed up Wolverine as it is. I waited ever since I was a kid for that film and it was a disgrace. He talked a lot of big game on how faithful and deep the film would be and then it turned out to have the complexity of a Saturday morning cartoon. If any film should be remade immediately then it should be Wolverine. It was supposed to show the birth of Wolverine and instead I felt like I attended the characters funeral. Don't let Hood screw up Magneto or anything else from the X Men please.

Zack Snyder wouldn't be a bad choice. Ridley Scott of course would be a good as well. I think though that the best man for the job would be Bryan Singer. He is the only director that seems to know how to adapt these characters. It's been a disaster ever since he left the series.
filmguy - 9/22/2009, 3:14 AM
Thanks for all the compliments ;)

HeyVanity- Yep, i changed avatars LOL :P

joshw24- I think you did see it before but i guess it depends on the surcumstances at that time ;)

LEEE- I'd say Clive Owen IF they make a Magneto Origins and Ed Harris for First Class. It would fit perfectly with what they have already established.
Shaman - 9/22/2009, 6:14 AM
This sounds exciting, but I'm biased because I love ANYTHING X-MEN...

with that being said, however, I am all into X-FORCE and I want to see a movie made about X-FORCE!!!!!

Domino, Wolverine, Cyclops, Cable, Wolfsbane, Elixir...
