Cowboys & Aliens Coming Together

The creative minds behind Transformers and Star Trek are doing their homework for this genre-hopping comic-to-film adaptation!
The writing "dynamic duo" of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have turned kids toys into a billion-dollar franchise and breathed new life into Star Trek by going back to the concepts that made the original series popular. For their next project, Orci and Kurtzman are going back to the "Wild Wild West" to adapt Platinum Studios' Cowboys and Aliens into a major motion picture.

Director Jon Favreau is helming the comic-to-film adaptation and the writing duo couldn't be happier working with the man who turned Iron Man into a worldwide phenomenon. Said Orci:

"We just started and we’re getting along really well. We’ve sent ourselves back to school and we’re watching Westerns together and analyzing them. We’re just getting into it.

And, Star Trek was originally pitched as a space Western, anyway, so it was a nice lead up to this, for us."

Kurtzman added:

"I think Jon [Favreau] also comes from a very similar emotional place and, because he’s an actor, he knows what plays and what doesn’t play very quickly. We’re having an unbelievably good time working with him."

Cowboys and Aliens tells the story of how cowboys and Apaches put their differences aside to combat an alien invasion in the mid-1800's. Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to star in the film.

What happened to my article?
Whispers68 - 10/9/2009, 9:18 AM
What article?
Brent Sprecher - 10/9/2009, 9:22 AM
Since I'm fairly "new," how does the article posted on let's say for instance "October 9th at 5:45pm" end up being listed as "October 8th?" The article I wrote about "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was posted as a new article about 35 minutes ago but it ended up being shown as October 8th and when it reached the first page after your article, it ended up sliding its way to the bottom with the other articles posted on October 8th
Whispers68 - 10/9/2009, 9:28 AM
@Whispers: Hmm...that's weird. It's fixed!
Brent Sprecher - 10/9/2009, 9:29 AM
Thanks much Brent...as I've said, maybe there's a procedure of some kind when certain articles are posted so I was making sure for future reference as to whether it's a technical issue or something to do with a specific criteria

Thanks
Whispers68 - 10/9/2009, 9:36 AM
@Whispers: I checked that the date was the 9th, but it still appears on the 8th, so I'll have to check with IT Nate about that...
Brent Sprecher - 10/9/2009, 9:48 AM
I keep telling you guys to check out http://www.drunkduck.com/CowboysAndAliens/index.php?p=93688.

@necro: Thanks for that link! I will check it out!
Brent Sprecher - 10/9/2009, 10:13 AM
He Brent?

Why'd you snubb Flash and WW in your poll?
Phinehas - 10/9/2009, 10:25 AM
@Phinehas: I didn't snub them; I just didn't include any movies that are already likely to be made. I chose those second- and third-string characters that I thought would make good movies. Personally, I would love to see a Hawkman or Moon Knight movie just as much as a Flash or Spider-Man movie. There are so many great characters out there!

teabag: I guess my article got deleted! :(

To be fair though, Brent's is actually quite a bit better, lol! Mine was a bit of a rush job!
joshw24 - 10/9/2009, 10:44 AM
Brent-

Ok. That wasn't explained in your poll description. Thanks!

I'd love to see Hawkman also! His temper would translate well to these fans in a movie. LOL How do you figure him a second-stringer? He's a founding member of the JLA. Or are you just basing that statement on his overall general popularity?
Phinehas - 10/9/2009, 10:57 AM
Brent Sprecher, what can I say? I try... normally its people's patience, but I still try. ;)
necrosage2005 - 10/9/2009, 11:35 AM
Again never heard of it, but more than willing to give it an chance. Iam for Silver Surfer movie DONE RIGHT!
Spock - 10/9/2009, 11:36 AM
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ..............
bropous - 10/9/2009, 11:37 AM
@Phinehas: I consider all of these guys second-stringers because:

A) They are not widely known characters outside of the comic community.
B) Even within the comic community they have a tough time carrying their own series.
Brent Sprecher - 10/9/2009, 11:42 AM
but what about a WONDER WOMAN MOVIE?!!!

Photobucket

she had her own tv show. very popular outside of the comics. I dont even understand how they could make a batman and superman movie and not a wonder woman movie. its just wrong. she is part of the trinity. >(
KeepItReal - 10/9/2009, 11:43 AM
No, you were right the first time. Some are third-stringers! ;-P

I agree.

I voted for Hawkman.
Phinehas - 10/9/2009, 11:45 AM
KIR, I asked the same question to Brent. He answered. Scroll up to see. :o)
Phinehas - 10/9/2009, 11:52 AM
@KIR: I agree: Wonder Woman is an iconic symbol of female empowerment deserving of her own movie. I didn't add her to the list because there's already plans to make her movie. I did add Power Girl though! ;D
Brent Sprecher - 10/9/2009, 11:53 AM
brent: so you think they really will make her movie? I hope so. They just are taking forever it seems. =(

power girl...meh... idk much of her but I would love to see Black Panther... Storms in it and she is my next favorite after WW. =)

Phin: ooops... sorry =) Photobucket
KeepItReal - 10/9/2009, 12:14 PM
im gonna start reading this comic.

as for the poll:
moonknight is pretty [frick]in cool if ya ask me.
he gets my vote.

and i wanna see cable too but he should be getting his chance in the deadpool movie.
Torque - 10/9/2009, 12:22 PM
Very nice, KIR!
Phinehas - 10/9/2009, 12:25 PM
The comic was okay, but with these two guyz writing it and RDJ starring in it I'm sure it's goin' to be awzum!!!

Black Panther - That would be great! African king/superhero fights mutated monsters and animal poachers!

Blue Beetle - Sure, why not? Put a techie spin on it and set it to the tone of Quantum Leap and I'm watchin' it!

Cable - Uhhh..Kyle Reese?

Deathstroke - Hard to have a baddie play the lead.

Green Arrow - Yes! Where's Super Max?!?

Grendel - From DH? That was cool, I think (been a loooong time since I read it).

Hawkman - Raw, untamed, fiercer than Wolverine and 3 times as smart!

Luke Cage - Yes, please!

Moon Knight - Even darker than The Dark Knight

Nightwing - Nope.

Power Girl - YES! YES! YES! (never happen)

Silver Surfer - Nah.

NataliaRomanov - 10/9/2009, 1:10 PM
Natalia-

Deathstroke should definitely have a major role in movie!!! But agree, Not likely to have villian as lead.
Phinehas - 10/9/2009, 1:58 PM
Aside from the green arrow I don't think of those guys could carry a movie...I'd even throw WW on that list because she can barely keep her book.
thwhtGuardian - 10/9/2009, 11:28 PM
I voted for Hawkman, he would be the most interesting and would transfer well to film (kind of like how Iron man became popular amongst the masses), most people wont know what to expect and i think that would be an advantage (same could be said of most of the other choices). Plus, just watch the trailer for LEGION and see how badass a dude with wings and a big fecking mace can look.
theFACE - 10/11/2009, 10:08 AM
I'm supposed to believe that cowboys, in there technological impaired time are supposed to battle with a civilization that already perfected space travel? I don't even know how we get by in movies and stories and win these battles unless we have super powers...freakin ridiculous.
