Doc Savage Movie IS in the Works, But NOT With Orci & Kurtzman

A live-action Doc Savage film is currently being written by Shane Black, but the Star Trek and Transformers writers will not be involved, as previously reported.

It was recently reported on AICN that the wonder-team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the writing team that has managed to turn the stale Transformers cartoon and toy line into a blockbuster franchise and who successfully reinvented Star Trek for a new generation, would be producing a live-action Doc Savage feature from a script by Shane Black of Lethal Weapon fame.

Now, AICN has posted a retraction, stating that Black is working on a script, but that Neal Moritz and Ori Marmur would be producing for Sony Pictures, not Orci and Kurtzman.

Originally published in Doc Savage Magazine in 1933, the "Man of Bronze" was a popular staple of the pulp magazines of the 30s and 40s and went on to appear in radio programs, comic books and a poorly-received 1975 feature film by George Pal. Black is crafting an original script, which is expected to take place in the 30's and feature a number of supporting characters from the Savage mythology, including his "Fabulous Five" adventure companions.

I remember my dad talking about Doc Savage. I never really read or saw anything about him though. A little before my time I guess.
BmanHall - 10/28/2009, 11:42 AM
Cool, though i hope he don't have that sparkle in his teeth like the old WB movie lol!

Its funny and all, but i hope they make DOC SAVAGE more grittier this time round!

Looking forward to it.

@Betty.....I like that idea of a new Indy !

Don't cast the rock as the Doc.

Skip the reboot and get it right the first time.

What other treasures are out there from the past ?
SkunkApe1 - 10/28/2009, 1:28 PM

Sam Raimi says he's eventually going to do
an Avenger movie! He owns the property now
along with Doc Savage and The Shadow. So I
guess Raimi's probably doing Doc Savage. I
don't really know. All I know is Raimi owns
Savage, The Shadow, The Avenger and The Spider,
all pulp heroes published by "Street & Smith".

The Avenger was a pulp hero a little
like Doc Savage but he was an average height,
although he was extremely powerful from training
similar to Doc's. Criminals killed his wife and
daughter and the stress turned his hair white and
his skin a shade of gray. And his face was like
putty and he could push it into the shape of someone
he was trying to impersonate and then he carried an
actors make-up kit to finish the disguise.

He killed a guy out of anger once when he was a
young man adventuring around the world and
amassing his fortune so he was sworn to never
take another life by his hand. He always set up
the criminal he was after to set his own stage
for his demise. Sort of like Doc Savage in that
way too!.

He carried a throwing knife and a small handgun
of his design that he would shoot at bad guys he
was fighting and knock them out by just creasing
the top of their heads. He nicknamed his weapons Ike
& Mike.

He also like Savage had a motley crew of sidekicks.
Nellie Gray who was a pretty little china doll
platinum blond woman trained in martial arts, Smitty,
a 6'9" giant with immense strength, Mac, a dour Scotch
pharmacist/chemist who had had his family also killed
by criminals, Josh & Rosabel Newton, a highly educated
African American couple, and Cole a black-haired younger
version of The Avenger, Richard Henry Benson.

The Avenger was written also by Kenneth Robeson
like Doc Savage. But it wasn't Lester Dent under
the house pen-name it was a different writer
writing under the Robeson name, Paul Ernst.

They're pretty good reads in their own right! DC put
out a comic in the 70's illustrated by Jack Kirby that
lasted 4 issues and then another series in the 80's.

Raimi's supposed to be doing a Shadow movie too!
I'm really looking forward to both these movies along
with Doc Savage!

hmmmm, interesting
Betty - 10/28/2009, 10:02 PM
guy from ROME or the new bond would be good in this as Doc Savage.
Scarycherry - 10/29/2009, 12:41 AM
Check out my Doc Savage Fancast in
Fanfic and...

...check out Fanfic for my casting of
THE AVENGER and his crew of five--
small pretty porceline doll-like NELLIE
GRAY, powerful giant SMITTY, redheaded
dour scottsman chemist/pharmacist MAC,
and JOSH & ROSEABEL a genius African-
American man & wife team.

He was just as cool as Doc Savage, in
my opinion!

But yay for DOC SAVAGE and his motley
crew! BTW, Doc was stated to be 6'8" tall
so McKid from Rome or Daniel Craig (Bond)
would not fit for Doc, they're both only
about 6'2" tall. At least Ron Elley from
the first campy movie was 6'4" tall and
also played Tarzan on TV.

lol Doc Savage is soooo uber classic. It would be GREAT if they could turn that into an epic win film series.

I was thinking about what Betty said about a newer, better Indiana Jones... Wouldn't that be great? Someone really could breath new life into that market.

Because right now, that whole thing is just up to it's armpits in FAIL.
Let's see.. what do we have? There's National Treasure, Tomb Raider, and the virtually unwatchable Indiana Jones 5. Pap and crap.

I for one would love to see someone with some writing and story telling skills take up that mantle and make it into somehting that the world could love as much as it did Indiana Jones
DarthMulder - 10/29/2009, 6:56 AM
yes!
Betty - 10/29/2009, 9:25 AM
It would be great to see a properly done DOC SAVAGE movie.
Done serious with no campy humor or goofy antics.
