Natalie Portman on Why She Took Thor Role

Portman said that a Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor movie just sounded "super-weird" to her!
At a recent press conference for Jim Sheridan's Brothers, actress Natalie Portman said that she was so intrigued when she heard that director Kenneth Branagh was directing an adaptation of Marvel Comics' Thor that she just had to be a part of it:

"I just thought it sounded like a weird idea because Kenneth Branagh's directing it, so I was just like, 'Kenneth Branagh doing 'Thor' is super-weird. I've gotta do it.'"

will someone please explain to me whats weird about it.
bleedthefreak16 - 11/21/2009, 3:20 PM
Im not that excited for Thor actually.
Ozymandias - 11/21/2009, 3:21 PM
And we're glad you found it weird, Natalie! Anything to get you to do another comic book movie after V for Vendetta!
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 3:21 PM
bleedthefreak-----its weird to her because Branagh directing it gives Thor more credibility and importance. He is known as a serious actor and director and those 2 things didn't go hand in hand with (comic book movie) in her mind.

Hawksblueyes - 11/21/2009, 3:29 PM
@Hawks: Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head! I don't really care what her reason was, I'm just glad she's in it!
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 3:31 PM
Bleed, you don't fins a classically trained Shakespearian actor and director making a CBM a bit off the wall? Cos I do! Sure, he's perfect for Thor but its still a rare occurrence. You wouldn't see martin Scorsese directing a Punisher movie.

Natalie, marry me..I'll be good to ya baby!
RorMachine - 11/21/2009, 3:31 PM

Dr. Donald Draper - 11/21/2009, 3:32 PM
All the explanation I needed was:

"It's Kenneth Branagh....directing Thor.....'nuff said."
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 3:32 PM
@Ror: Oh, man, why did you have to go and put that idea in my head?!? Scorcese doing Punisher would rock! Except...he would probably cast Leo as the Punisher...

@DrDon: Heh.
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 3:33 PM
Ozymandias- really!?..this movie is going to be EPIC..
(I HOPE)

peterparker420 - 11/21/2009, 3:39 PM
im excited to see how they tie in the 'realistic' world of iron man and captain america which can be told in a way that we can think that these people can actualy exist, and on the other hand we have the mythological, majical, shakespearian world of thor and combine the two in avengers! oh yh btw about cap ap i saw this pic from sum1 who posted this before
Photobucket
i would love to see this costume..its the most beliveable costume for a movie (the 70's movie was accurate to the comic look but very campy) i attempted to make it for myself...
Photobucket
huh? huh?
TheLivingWeapon - 11/21/2009, 3:48 PM
i had no idea who Branagh was until Thor so i had no idea why it was weird thanks Hawks
bleedthefreak16 - 11/21/2009, 3:49 PM
I cant wait for Thor! I'm guessing that the fact Brannagh's directing this particular CBM is the main reason why brilliant actors like Hopkins and Portman are getting involved! :)

TheLivingWeapon: I definitely wouldnt want to see that costume in any movie to be honest! I'd like to see the Ultimate WWII costume in The First Avenger and a cross between the regular and Ultimate costume in The Avengers!

Kenneth Branagh film making style and thor story, should be awesome but going to contain excitment until i see a trailer but great cast tho.
ukboy28 - 11/21/2009, 4:04 PM
Kenneth Branagh is a great director has anyone seen his movies that he directed i.e. Hamlet, Frankenstein, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V.

@TheLivingWeapon

that Captain America design looks good
jazzman - 11/21/2009, 4:05 PM
@jazzman- thanks dude

@josh- the first one i definetly see that for the part of the movie set in WWII and i think the 2nd suit is iconic i just got a little feeling that it might look a lil corney thats why i was looking for a more realistic look but saying that spiderman and superman still stuck with the iconic costume and pulled it off..i dunno suttin just worries me

what about the costume that bucky wears as cap?
TheLivingWeapon - 11/21/2009, 4:06 PM
As for Thor, I'd like to see THIS costume! :)

JoshW - 11/21/2009, 4:07 PM
jazzman@ saw frankenstein didint think it was as bad as its reviews made it out to be, its his classic vision mixed in with thor that should make it work, only thing shocking with thor was helmsworth as the lead to be honest.
ukboy28 - 11/21/2009, 4:10 PM
@LivingWeapon/Josh: Yes, I think they would have to subdue the colors somewhat to make it more effective. I think that if they're going to be starting the story in WWII, we'll probably see something like this, at list at first:

It keeps the basic design, but tones down the colors and gives him head protection. I mean, even the great Captain America could fall victim to a stray bullet or shrapnel, right?

Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 4:10 PM
easy josh mate hows it going?
ukboy28 - 11/21/2009, 4:11 PM
TheLivingWeapon: I do actually like the costume that you posted and I completely agree that the original costume might end up looking a liitle corny on screen but I'd still like a version thats close to the original! IMO,they should use the Ulitmate mask (with the chin strap thing) with the regular outfit but with the Ultimate belt, boots etc! Im a big fan of Bucky's outfit and would love to see that in a movie someday but again, I want to see the Captain America costume in his movie/The Avengers! :)

Brent: I agree - plus, if Cap's movie is going to be set in WWII some changes (like the ones you mention) will have to be made because the characters original costume just wont look right in that type of surroundings IMO!

ukboy28: Not too bad thanks mate! How're things your way...any flooding, lol? :P
JoshW - 11/21/2009, 4:11 PM
@josh: I was actually thinking that the reason they introduced that Thor costume was because they were planning on going with something similar in the film, but that's just my own speculation.
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 4:12 PM
I DUNNO IF I LIKE THE BEARD OR NO BEARD CHAINMAIL OR NO CHAINMAIL

GUNSMITH - 11/21/2009, 4:13 PM
Definitely WW2 Ultimate Cap costume for First Avenger.

Then for Avengers go Ultimate Cap.

And the Thor costume that Josh posted is perfect.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 4:18 PM
I liked it when Walt Simonson introduced the Thor armor waaaay back when, but I never liked the beard. It just made him seem too old (which, I guess, is silly since Thor is hundreds, if not thousands, of years old).

Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 4:18 PM
josh@ lol nah should of been, think im living in groundhog day got soaked again on the way to work haha, wbu??
ukboy28 - 11/21/2009, 4:18 PM
@Tyler: Dude, I'm with you...except I can't handle that duck bill on Cap's WWII costume!!!
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 4:19 PM
Brent: That actually makes a whole lot of sense! I thought the same thing with the new WWII costume in Reborn - after all these years of showing WWII flashbacks with Cap in the same uniform he wears in the present why the sudden change..? :P

862379-cap_super

ukboy28: Lol, same here man! It literally hasnt stopped raining since the last tim we were talking about the weather! :D
JoshW - 11/21/2009, 4:22 PM
Brent: It is pretty in your face isn't it? Just make the nose piece mold to Cap's actual nose and we're ready to go :)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 4:22 PM
i hate ultimate caps costumes they all suck lets just go with regular world war II to and the cap were all accustomed to you know the one with the wings. ultimate cap is just so wrong
bleedthefreak16 - 11/21/2009, 4:22 PM
@josh...the modern thor in JMS run currently is the best suit for the god...looks amazing...even with the wings on helmet...
as for cap...the ultimate cap is a cool look but honestly we do need the old school look when we see him in the past...but rather than the decent ultimate look in the future...the best modern cap costume that i think he should don with the avengers is the buckycap costume...that suit is frickin amazing and edgy...and still maintains the aesthtic beauty and visuals of the cap that rogers wore...

as for natalie portman...jane foster?? i rather her act as sif...and if she aint hyped to play it...then to hell with her...thor is my fave marvel character and he is epic..and so i end...

No flavor-saver for Thor!
Dr. Donald Draper - 11/21/2009, 4:25 PM
@josh- i just hope that that dont go 2 far with making him look realistic and give him a propa military costume wiv like a lil flag or maybe even worse and they go with a g.i joke kinda look :s

@brent- yup i love that costume for the 1st part of the movie fingas crossed
TheLivingWeapon - 11/21/2009, 4:25 PM
I'm loving this helmet design for Cap, for Avengers of course, it gives off a very tactical vibe.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 4:26 PM
@ukboy28

i agree frankenstein was good i dont know why them critics giving that movie bad reviews for. im also shocked that Chris Hemsworth is casted as Thor we just wait and see if he does good playing Thor. another thing Chris Hemsworth is going to be in Red Dawn remake next year.

jazzman - 11/21/2009, 4:26 PM
@Tyle: Yeah, that would work for a WWII Cap helmet/cowl.

Anil: I would rather see Natalie in a fur bikini myself, but who says she's not hyped for it? She just said that she was intrigued right away because Kenneth Branagh was involved. Imagine if they had offered her the script with Brett Ratner attached. I'm sure she wouldn't have had the same reaction.
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 4:28 PM
Damnit, where are all of the skimpy Natalie Portman pics? You guys are slippin'!
Dr. Donald Draper - 11/21/2009, 4:29 PM
@ thelivingweapon

i love ya man, but you should be drug out into the streets and shot for putting john cena in a captain america costume :)

by the way, that costume was used in the story Secret War, it was cap's undercover costume when they invaded latveria. it is cool, but in the cap movie, i'd rather see his WWII costume. in avengers, i want him to have the same exact costume from the comics, but with tactical military pants and boots.

i think the only parts of the costume that MIGHT look corny on screen are the pants and boots. thats what kinda ruins the translation from comics to screen in my eyes, for a LOT of superhero costumes. its hard to make tights look cool, and tough. but if they go with the tactical pants, it could still make him look american-military-ish while still looking like a badass. the chainmail upper body is a must though!
CorndogBurglar - 11/21/2009, 4:30 PM
TheLivingWeapon: ANYTHING would be better than something like that, lol!

TYLER: That is THE best helmet design for the Cap movie! Hell, I wish the regular Cap would change his costume to look more like that - its a fantastic design!
JoshW - 11/21/2009, 4:33 PM
Josh: I agree man. I love the chin strap design, it just is so cool, and while not looking laughable or anything, it looks very modern and works perfect for an Avengers movie.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 4:40 PM
apparently people are missing the point with all the capt america images, Natalie Portman is playing a great character for the Thor movie. She's gonna be Thor's guide to the human realm and a potential love interest. Im so excited for this movie....her announcement gave me a nerdgasm XP.
BlackAirs87 - 11/21/2009, 4:40 PM
underdog actor for cap - zack knighton of flashforward...i havent seen much of him but his lost soul role in this show and his face reeks of that when cap is brought into the world anew...a long shot but hell ive heard some worse suggestions :)
he needs a few weeks in gym and hell...anything is better than jason lewis..right LEE??? hehe
Anil Rickly - 11/21/2009, 4:42 PM
@peterparker420:Yeah, Im actually more excited for Caps movie. This is my order from what I want to see the most:

1.The First Avenger:Captain America
2.The Avengers
3.Iron Man 2
4.Green Lantern
5.Deadpool
6.Spiderman 4
7.Thor
8.Jonah Hex

i agree, i want the chainmail armor costume for thor, that is his best costume of all time!

@ drdon

yeah man, the rock is just entertaining, there's no way around it. i don't know if i'd want him in a superhero movie because he makes those over the top facial expressions, but i do like him. other than that, only tyler mane should be allowed to act, lol. and only in silent parts, lol
CorndogBurglar - 11/21/2009, 4:44 PM
Oh and my new choice for Captain America is Tom Brady!!!

Sure, hes not a actor but I believe he could play the part. The only problem is he wouldnt be able to play for the Patriots anymore.
Ozymandias - 11/21/2009, 4:45 PM
i rather buckycap costume...
and as for jane foster?..if she is involved heavily how will the film be divided between asgard and midgard? cuz i felt ken would do a major asgard norse epic...then end it with thor in jesse spencer's (don blake's) body...with jane foster probably cameoing at the end...thats why i though nat was sif...cuz SIF is his main squeeze in asgard...i hoped the thor on midgard would be left to avengers and thor 2...heck i even did my avengers fan fic on that belief

I think we have a really special CBM in store for us with Thor. You've got Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman and a great director in Kenneth Branagh. Not only is he a reputable director, but he's also a famous actor, a talented writer and producer. Check out the cred on this guy:

Kenneth Branagh IMDB

ANIL: Im a big fan of FlashForward but I'm not sure about that guy for Cap...he's a much, much better choice than Jason Lewis or Sam Worthington though!

CDB: Definitely man! :)

TYLER: Once again, I agree! I dont think a direct translation of the original costume will work all that well and the Ultimate costume or at least aspects of it will help it work onscreen and make it look a hell of a lot cooler!
JoshW - 11/21/2009, 4:57 PM
Ozymandias- OOHHH, I see..that makes sense!

josh- that is the THOR costume I want to see also
it's the best one!!

in regards to thor having a beard, i really don't know
it makes sense that he would have one, but on the other hand, in the current thor comics he doesn't have a beard, and it looks good, it make thor look alot younger
and it makes sense with the donald blake storyline

cheers all around! (brent good find!)

I VOTE NO BEARD!
peterparker420 - 11/21/2009, 4:59 PM
@Bijous: All excellent points! I had no idea that Branagh had done so many things.

I've been impressed with Portman's acting since she was just a young performer. She killed it in Leon: The Professional (pun intended) and hasn't really let me down since (though some of her Star Wars seens were pretty forced).
Brent Sprecher - 11/21/2009, 5:01 PM
She's right it does seem weird.

But it only seems that way because everyone assumes that because it's from a comic book, that means it has to be cliche craption, and not artfully done at all.

People, especially Hollywood snobs hear the term comic book movie and just assume it's another "idiot's" genre film aimed at boys and men age 8 to 24.

Well then here's this director who is known as a very creative dramatist. A consummate artist who has skill at creating films of a distinct eminence who is now making a movie about a comic book character. So in the snooty self satisfied hollywood bubble dwelling brain of a typical movie star that gives it an extra measure of legitimacy.

...as in something along the lines of "oh... Branaugh's doing it? Well in that case I'll do it!" Where as she wouldn't if not for that.

It's all good though. If Branaugh is attracting top talent to the film, well then wonderful. I don't care what Hollywood biznitches think of comic books.

DarthMulder - 11/21/2009, 5:04 PM
Maybe a beard in Asgard, and clean shaven on Earth..It doesn't really matter anyway. Costume wise..again, like Cap, id like to see something of a mix between Classic and Ultimate, or even another retooling for the movie. As long as he's recognizably Thor i wont mind.

Branagh was class in Othello as Iago. Im not sure if he directed that too...

Brent, everyone in those prequels seemed pretty bad. I don't know if it was the script, direction..prob a combo of th e2, but when even Liam Neeson seems dodgey theirs something rotten in Denmark!

Karl Urban for Balder ;)

I'm indifferent to a beard or no beard. Either way is fine with me.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 5:17 PM
Karl Urban is the man! He would make a great Balder! I hope he gets more Bones time in Star Trek 2!
Bijous - 11/21/2009, 5:24 PM
I just had a strange thought. And before I convey it, let me start off by saying (I DO NOT WANT CENA AS CAP). That being said, looking at him in Caps uniform I noticed something. 3 of the campiest Superhero costumes of all time (and iconic) are Captain America, Superman, and Spiderman.
These 3 costumes have had numerous people in them. Of the actors and trick or treaters to wear them, almost all looked rediculously stupid, giving birth to the notion that they could not work well on screen.
Now look at Reeves in the Superman suit, looked badass, same for Routh. We've all seen how bad a Spidey suit can make you look, but Maguire looks amazing in his.
Now look at Cena in Caps uniform (scratch the face) it looks incredible. I don't believe at all that its the suit that doesn't work.
These people are built exactly right for the characters as they appear in the comics, therefore the suit looks natural.
My point being, if I really have one, is that its a shame we don't have more actors capable of filling the suits, as opposed to changing the costumes to fit the actors. If we did none of the costumes would need to be changed.
Hawksblueyes - 11/21/2009, 5:38 PM
Carl Urban IS Bones! Plain and simple!
He's eerily channeling Deforest Kelly!

But Carl won't be playing Balder 'cause
Balder's already cast, unfortunately!

I personally want the traditional look
for Thor! Thor on Midgard (earth) is
where the character began in the comics!
The Asgard stuff came afterwards!
After all Thor is basically an earth
hero, in the Avengers! He's not in the
friggin' GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY"!
DDD - 11/21/2009, 5:52 PM
DDD: Balder hasn't been cast, I think you're thinking of Heimdall, who will be played by Idris Elba.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/21/2009, 5:54 PM

jazzman - 11/21/2009, 6:42 PM
Personally, Alexander Skarsgard is the perfect Heimdall, but I'm reserving judgement on Elba until I see the movie, because he's proven himself to be a great actor in the past. Sure, a Caucasian Heimdall was ideal, but I'm willing to sacrifice that for a great performance.

What?
THEHAWK - 11/21/2009, 10:54 PM
Portman is a great actress. She killed in V for Vendetta. I vote no beard.
Upupandaway - 11/21/2009, 11:33 PM
THEHAWK-

Hemsworth for Supes? I'm not even certain about him and Thor. Would Stewart be the image of Vril Dox or the android we all know as Brainiac? Why cast some of the actors that were cast from the Smallville show? Wouldn't that confuse continuity? I like Michael C. Hall for Luther! The poor guy is going to be type-cast as a psychotic. LOL
Phinehas - 11/21/2009, 11:46 PM
About Cap. Personally i could bet they'll maintain all the stars in costume and shield, but not the "A" on his head. Want anyone bet with me about?
MisterFixit - 11/22/2009, 1:26 AM
lol,ok i'll wait you to wake up. Sometimes i forget the lag :-D here it's 9.43 a.m. In any case some of you think a big A on his helmet could look weird? Maybe a smaller one? You saw what was done with the batman's bat,the daredevil's DD or the punisher's skull
MisterFixit - 11/22/2009, 1:47 AM
She took the THOR movie coz she was offered lots of money lol!!!

DRAPER @ Lmfao!!!

TYLER @ Stick your ULTIMATE CAP where the SUN dont SHINE!!!
I'm sure you've got no taste lol!!!

CLASSIC CAP all the way, [frick] ULTIMATES!!!

LEEE777 - 11/22/2009, 4:58 AM
Portman break...

teabag - 11/22/2009, 5:24 AM
thank you tea.
1chris2 - 11/22/2009, 5:33 AM
i really never got into thor, i think the film will do well. i just always like the x-men,spiderman,captain america, hulk, ironman, silver surfer, namor, and the inhumans. any news on those films and im there.
1chris2 - 11/22/2009, 5:35 AM
i too vote no beard.....leave that for the story when he leaves earth to tend to asgard for a long time....and his triumphic return also brings a triumphic Beard!!!

@Hawk no person who is associated with a current comic franchise should be cast in a Superman movie. i would hate for a certain Bryan Singer history to repeat itself.
Just look what happened to X-3 and Superman Returns.....one guy's stupid and inconciderate move has fans of both franchises calling for a re-boot! Thanks Alot Singer!
Kes - 11/22/2009, 6:39 AM
so shes a fan comics i see
flames809 - 11/22/2009, 8:15 AM
@ ozy

yeah, i could see why you would think tom brady could pull off cap...lol...wait, huh?
CorndogBurglar - 11/22/2009, 8:35 AM
Natalie-hmmm you are in my top three that the wife says if I get the chance I can have it. Probaly the script is weird ul;timate style. Crazy schzo ( my apologies to any mental illness people) to SON OF ODIN!.I am assuming SIF, but she could so well do Enchantress$ hubba hubba$ .
Aesir - 11/22/2009, 8:43 AM
I used to think Natalie was uber-hot but now she's fallen into really cute status. I can't believe I didn't like it when she was a stripper in whatever movie that was. She should have been wearing a school girl outfit in that. Play to her strengths, you know? Yowza!

I am also a sans beard thor kind of person. In fact, I gaurauntee that thor will not have a beard in the film. They pic a actor to play thor that all the ladies want to tango with... and then slap a beard on him? No way.

I am a huge fan of the Simonson run so I would love it if they could emmulate his style, sans beard of course.

"sans" means without.
Betty - 11/22/2009, 9:35 AM
@PHineas & Kes. I picked schneider and OToole as a nod to Smallville fans. I only have Ma and Pa Kent in one small scene of my story.

And as for Brian Green for Cobin, well I was working on a 666 character casting. And i had cast him as Metallo long before CW revealed he had been cast in the role for Smallville. SO I'm still going with my first choice, even if he was in Smallville. And at least we know he could play the part.

Oh and @EVERYONE. CBM's video player works!

THEHAWK - 11/22/2009, 9:55 AM
@ betty

lol. thanks for the clarification, lmao. but i guess there are some pretty stupid people around.

and thor won't have a beard in this, thats a guarantee. and besides, when thor had a beard in the comics, it was when that other guy, not donald blake was his anchor i believe.
CorndogBurglar - 11/22/2009, 10:57 AM
LEE: Obviosuly you have no taste - Cap's original costume will just look cheesy on the big screen unless some realistic changes are made and aspects from the Ultimate costume (mask, chin strap, belt, boots etc.)
JoshW - 11/22/2009, 11:29 AM
@Ozymandias...But Captain America is a Winner! Didn't you see Peyton Manning take his manhood last Sunday. Besides, Captain America would never do a Stetson commercial.
TNTjesus - 11/22/2009, 12:34 PM
I like the original too. I don't think it would look cheesy at all.

Maybe I am just too much of a Cap fan to see it but I never get why people think the Ultimate version is just soooo much cooler. It's not. There's just a few minor differences.
DarthMulder - 11/22/2009, 3:38 PM
As for the costumes....
Captain America
WW2-WW2 Reborn(or Ultimate WW2)
Present-MUA2 costume
Thor
Modern Costume
NightAvenger4 - 11/22/2009, 3:53 PM
Here's the costume i want for The First Avenger! And if you look closely, it's also the best actor for the part ;)

Shaman - 11/23/2009, 7:14 AM
@Shaman: Yeah, more sketches, bro! How about drawing Chris as Thor or some of the new Thor cast members?
Brent Sprecher - 11/23/2009, 11:59 AM
Brent- If i wasn't so swamped with the costume winners' sketches, i would do a Chris/Thor sketch. I might wait till we get a glimpse of the helmet he'll be waring though ;)

I've also wanted to do a Jason Lewis sketch as Robocop... okay, stop laughing. He looks very much like Peter Weller and wouldn't need stellar acting chops either ;)
Shaman - 11/23/2009, 12:07 PM
OK EVERYBODY STOP EVERYTHING!!! WHAT MOVIE DID THOSE PICS OF PORTMAN STRIPPING COME FROM???
RomeyRome2002 - 11/23/2009, 2:43 PM
thats not portman with the snake. its another model doing a copy of the old natassia kinski photo which is even better.
gaikinger - 11/24/2009, 8:05 PM
Thank´s teabag for Natalie Portman, she´s beautiful.
