Stephen Colbert "Riddler" Rumor Has Legs

The Huffington Post "fan cast" of Stephen Colbert as the Riddler in Batman 3 gets picked up by other news agencies.

Apparently, comic book movie fans aren't the only ones easily excited by speculative casting rumors. According to Huffington Post contributor 2morrowknight, several news sources picked up his blog about why Stephen Colbert should play the Riddler in Batman 3, including The Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Showhype, Daylife, Mahalo, WhoRepresents, Newsrunner, and the Twitter nation. Colbert's people even picked up the story and posted it on his own site.

In his original article, 2morrowknight justifies his choice as such:

The Riddler is not just any villain. As long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle, he views it as a crime worth committing. He doesn't kill his opponents when he has the upper hand. Like say, Jigsaw in the Saw movies, he has to put them in a deathtrap where he creates a life and death intellectual challenge they cannot possibly solve. And though Depp could do it, Stephen Colbert would give the role true justice.

The Riddler is intellectually curious, wickedly funny, and relentlessly creative -- all of the things I would associate with Stephen Colbert. Add in the usual debauchery, mischief and shenanigans and Colbert could really pull it off."

While it's extremely unlikely that Cobert would ever be chosen for a movie like this, he is a self-avowed fan of comic books, so it's not completely out of the question.

Cool poster and a intrieging concept, the Invisible Riddler.

It'll never happen, but Colbert is pretty damn funny!

awesome poster and i could see him doing it.

Colbert has a nerdy, neurotic quality that could work in the Riddler's favor. Rad poster!

I hope this never happens.

I would love to see Colbert as the Riddler, but i don't think he is dark and sinister enough for Nolan's vision of Gotham. These people all need to remeber that in Nolan's world- form follows function. Batman is a crime fighter first, and eveything about his costume and gadgets is specific to that purpose. The Joker was a bank robber first, his look was meant to inspire fear in his rivals and underlings (and because he was insane) and later on, he became more of a dark opposite of Batman.

IF they do use the Riddler in a future movie, you can bet that he will be much more subdued that the super-gimmicky weirdo he is usually portrayed as. He will most likely appear as someone who sets traps for people (maybe similar to the SAW movies) and taunts the police with clues and riddles to see if they can solve them in time.

It will probably be a revenge plot against his rivals and Batman- maybe Batman puts Nigma in prison early in the film and he gets out and becomes the riddler.

That's how i see it at least.
ReddHotPoker - 9/5/2009, 10:20 AM
He could also trick Batman by pretending to be Bob Saget lolll

Imran - 9/5/2009, 10:27 AM
Colbert was GREAT as Phil in Harvey Birdman so I'm game for any role he's in.

InstigatorGIRL - 9/5/2009, 10:33 AM
batman7:

Why did Hitler become a hero of Germany in a democratic process,What's wrong with democratic system.

When people misinterpret hero, when a bad guy become a mayor who voted and suppored by people, when the reactionary gang put on the beautiful cloth and join in upper-class!Society is sick!everything is impossible.

Gorden will be investigated by gov,it's just begining, the revenge of reactionary gang in a smart and logicality brain.

Riddler,a brain of reactionary gang.
Penguin,a mayor of Gotham.

People must be rescue themselves.
Hero must be rescue his faith.
Wang Zheng - 9/5/2009, 10:50 AM
It's certainly possible, look at Courtney Love getting excellent reviews in People vs Larry Flint. She played a character much like her real self sort of like Colbert and the Riddler, sort of...
Axl - 9/5/2009, 10:55 AM
lets just hope that if christopher nolan does the next one he doesnt ruin the riddler cause he is by far the coolest villian. They could also throw in the mad hatter and go with a whole mind control theme
future0fcomixs - 9/5/2009, 11:04 AM
Oh, VOMIT.

Sure, let's get the leftist freak Obama-cult-worship mutants at Puffington Hose choose the next Riddler.

Okay, Rush Limbaugh for Kingpin.

[However, I did really enjoy Colbert in Strangers with Candy, and hat is definitely off to him for his appearances with the troops in Iraq. He's probably not a bad guy, I just despise Puffington Hose-bags.]

Again, I vote for a complete "unknown" for ANY role in the superhero movies. Let's see some real talent emerge from nowhere, and not a star who will impose their own personality on the role.

I like the TEASER POSTER @ BRENT!!! Very cool!

Don't know who the heck this guy is, but he don't scream RIDDLER to be!

JOHNNY DEPP!!!

Yeah i know he's DOC STRANGE lol, but that's a Marvel Hero, this a DC Villain, so just this once its cool lol!

He'd play both parts sooo different anyway, you wouldn't care!
LEEE777 - 9/5/2009, 11:31 AM
he would never be the riddler, but thanks for the laugh!
Duhdaduh - 9/5/2009, 11:36 AM
Lee777..Colbert is an egomaniacal comedian who can never admit defeat.....cracks me up all the time...sort of like you do. :)
RedSkullGeezer - 9/5/2009, 11:41 AM
Yeah, great poster...but not such a good pick. Colbert can be funny, but I'm not seeing it as a good fit. And if you don't believe me, just think about this... who else is a funny guy? Jim Carrey.
Bamf7 - 9/5/2009, 11:46 AM
Has anyone considered David Tennant to play Riddler? If you've ever watched Doctor Who? (seasons 2-4) you'd know who I'm talking about. I think he would be great for it. Just looking at him as the Doctor, he's brilliant, clever, funny, and could even be dark at times. He would probably never get the part or even consider it since he's doing more theatre work now since he's left the show but still I can definitely picture him in the Riddler get-up.
ComicKnight - 9/5/2009, 11:49 AM
BAMF @ JIM CARREYS been RIDDLER lol! ; D

ComicKnight @ Hell no to DR WHO being RIDDLER lol! I luv him as the DOCTOR but,,, i dunno, he's DR WHO lol.

REDSKULL @ Cool, i'll hav'ta YOU TUBE some of his stuff!

An you crack me up too fella!!! Especially them PICS, if i knew how to put heads on pictures an stuff, id get my own back on you lol, heh heh! : D
LEEE777 - 9/5/2009, 11:56 AM
Colbert is hilarious. The Colbert Report is one of my favorite shows to watch. But he's wrong for Riddler.

David Tennant/Michael C. Hall for Riddler.

Comicknight: Tennant has expressed interest in playing the Riddler.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 12:01 PM
We've seen a comical Riddler already. I think it's time to see a serious Riddler now. I like Colbert, but he's not a good fit for the Riddler. I would like to see a Batman: TAS sort of Riddler. He's not goofy, but he gets his point across with his death traps. Maybe a sort of toned down Jigsaw.

LEE777 @ And Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool but apparently he's Green Lantern as well. lol I'm just sayin he could pull it off.

Tyler @ Has he really? I didn't hear about that. Explains all the fanpics I've seen now. Michael Hall would be good too. He's brilliantly sadistic on Dexter. Great show btw.

ComicKnight - 9/5/2009, 12:21 PM
Comicknight: Yeah, there are a butt load of pics of Tennant as Riddler around the internet. I think he would fit perfectly into Nolan's style/universe.

My Choices for Riddler:

1. David Tennant

2. Michael C. Hall

3. Guy Pearce
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 12:28 PM
Tennant would be a perfect Riddler..cos i [frick]ing hate them both!
Rorschach01 - 9/5/2009, 12:33 PM
The Riddler should be Paul Bettany. He has the look and he can do the super intelligent villain really well. He is perfect for the role.
moonman - 9/5/2009, 12:34 PM
Colbert sucks! So does his show. He's not even funny! Not that he would have to be.
mativ16 - 9/5/2009, 12:51 PM
hes good for the riddler

As for Stehpen Colbert as riddler i don't know if he could pull it off its very unlikely that Nolan would cast him anyway if they were to pick an actor to play the riddler in the third Batman i hope they go with Johnny Depp he would be perfect for the part.

tony out

DarthKyrat1 - 9/5/2009, 1:25 PM
Its a bad idea to pick someone based on looks. I personally dont feel like the riddler will be over the top funny so picking someone who we all know for that is not necessarily a good idea. I think first and foremost the character would be put into the dark knight movie franchise universe. So he would need to be realistic yet demented. This is closer to a thriller than it is a superhero movie. The last post had Guy Pearce and I agree he would be a good choice. My choice however is Ralph Fiennes

theartofoneness - 9/5/2009, 1:26 PM
NO friggin way do we want TOSS BOLLOX to be RIDDLER! He'd sooooooooooo HAM it up, it'll be BATMAN & ROBIN again! DR WHO BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ; D

DARTH @ Cheers man! ; )
LEEE777 - 9/5/2009, 1:42 PM
Do you actually think Tennant would ham it up while Christopher F*CKING Nolan is directing? Didn't think so...

Depp could just as easily ham it up. Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Mad Hatter.

LEEE777 - 9/5/2009, 2:01 PM
Depp is too mainstream these days to do it. Ledger came out of nowhere, we knew about him but couldnt imagine him in that role. I think if depp did it we would get another willy wonka cheese fest.

Ive been thinking of a few actors that would take it to a very interesting place.

Steve Buscemi

theartofoneness - 9/5/2009, 2:03 PM
Daniel Day Lewis

theartofoneness - 9/5/2009, 2:04 PM
I still prefer DEATHSTROKE & DEADSHOT being hired to hunt down the BATS on the run though!

Id forget DDL lol, everyone thinks he's too good an actor for a comic book role! even though he was 60 ahead of the other guy in the RED SKULL vote last time i checked! : D

steve would be good!
LEEE777 - 9/5/2009, 2:04 PM
Deathstroke should be saved for Teen Titans. Deadshot would be great to see, but in a small role. He isn't a big enough villain to be a major player.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 2:19 PM
Yeah i cast Crisoin Glover as Joker man, god I'm blutered :D i would hate it if Steven colbert was Riddler he'd mess that role up BIG TIME!!!! Michael C Hall for Riddler!!!
Ryden - 9/5/2009, 2:31 PM
If you go to imdb, look up Chris Nolan, go to his page, and click on the untiled batman project there's a groovy new image of a poster.
moonman - 9/5/2009, 2:42 PM
I meant Crispin for the riddler. I know everyone wants him for the joker but honestly the joker shouldnt be touched after ledger. at least not in this trilogy. He would make a whicked riddler.
theartofoneness - 9/5/2009, 2:43 PM
We know you meant Glover for Riddler.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 2:47 PM
I really don't like the idea of the riddler in another Bat Film. I would rather Hugo Strange, Black Mask, and Talia al ghul.
StrangemannX09 - 9/5/2009, 2:53 PM
No Steven Colbert as Riddler! Just doesn't fit the Batman Nolanverse! But Michael C. Hall is inspired casting for Riddler! That is my favorite! Tennant just doesn't seem right to me! And Johnny has been done to death!

Ralph Feinnes would be too dry in the part...Riddler calls for someone with a little more flair like Hall.
DDD - 9/5/2009, 2:54 PM
Johnny could pull off Joker tho'!
DDD - 9/5/2009, 2:57 PM
I want Batman 3 to bring in Black Mask as a new mob leader. Maybe he could hire Deadshot to try to take out Batman, and Bats takes Deadshot out, a la the Gotham Knight cartoon DVD.

But Riddler should be main villain IMO.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 2:59 PM
who the hell said Colbert isn't funny? geez I know he's no Dane Cook but c'mon (there really should be a sarcastic font) ever hear of satire? and one of you actually believes stephen colbert as seen on his show is how he really is? this really isn't a comedy forum

If Riddler is the main villain Bats is gonna need help. Theres no way I can see it otherwise. So you might as well bring Barbara in.
StrangemannX09 - 9/5/2009, 3:29 PM
Why would Bats need help against Riddler? He took on Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul and beat them both without help.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 3:31 PM
Mainly because Nolans Batman is Def hasn't shown me any signs of being a detective. He just relies on his gadgets.
StrangemannX09 - 9/5/2009, 3:32 PM
He has shown signs of great intelligence, especially in TDK. I don't think that just because he hasn't shown much of it means he can't do it on his own.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 3:37 PM

Ok Lets review. THe first time he took down the JOker in TDK he needed help from Gordon and Harvey. The second time he needed help from Fox using a radar. If Joker was as big a threat in TDK. The Riddler is def gonna have to do some mind tortuing to both Bruce, and Bats. Also having a mix of Black mask and Deadshot it's gonna get a little crazy without another brain.
StrangemannX09 - 9/5/2009, 3:46 PM
Let me clarify: I don't mean he can't have help from anyone. I want Alfred/Lucius/Gordon to help Bats with riddles and Black Mask. What I don't want is Barbara/Robin helping him.

Bats should be able to take Deadshot on his own.

Black Mask he could use Gordon's help to take down, with the whole Mob vs. Cops angle.

Lucius and Alfred should help Bats with the puzzles and riddles.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 3:50 PM
I'm getting tired of all these Batman 3 rumors.
Bandrews1 - 9/5/2009, 3:54 PM

Bruce Wayne as Batman will be on the run now, a hunted man but I don't think he should have help by the way of Batgirl! It's too early in his Batman Career for Batgirl and Robin.

He needs to work this out himself. That will be the drama...Bruce working everything out with his detective skills, his ninja skills, and his gadgets while all the while being on the run from everybody!
DDD - 9/5/2009, 3:54 PM
@ ComicChic...I agree! His role as Phil on HBM is some of the funniest shit I have ever seen. "No, not there! Sit there! Ha HAAA!!!"

As for whoever made the "Dark Knight Returns" poster, it's cool, but that title would never fly with that villain. There's already a comic with the same title written and drawn by one of the best artists EVER! Some day, IF, they ever make that comic into a movie, it would fallow the Joker again.
RolandOfGilead - 9/5/2009, 4:05 PM
It's a pickle no doubt. My thing is the way TDK left off with Gordon and Bats I really think a middleman needs to be there. Somehow Bruce/Bats needs to get a message to Gordon via Barbara. I don't like the idea of Batgirl either, but this way a simple cameo can do the character justice.
StrangemannX09 - 9/5/2009, 4:06 PM
Michael Fassbender or Paul Bettany would be great to see as the Riddler?! Johnny Depp is great to!
AlexDeLarge666 - 9/5/2009, 4:13 PM
Stephen Colbert is a no talent ass clown. If they have him be the Riddler then they may as well make it a direct to dvd movie. Why not a Batman/Judge Dredd movie, and leave Stallone out of it!
Number21 - 9/5/2009, 4:26 PM
I don't know if this would work.. Maybe he's too old looking but I'd have T-Bag for The Riddler!

PRETTY PLEASE with spiderparker on top.
C4 - 9/5/2009, 8:31 PM
This is my first post. But I feel that a riddler would have to be a sadistic maniac. Some said like the saw movies. I also think he may need a different look. Something darker than the suit and cane. Something that strikes fear into the people of Gotham. Someone that is a real threat to Batman, but not a joke like in the other things of riddler. I like Ben Foster from the movie Hostage. He played a really good insane, sadistic, crazy, killer. I also really like Jude law in the movie Sleuth. It was a movie that he did with Michael Caine. Thats my two cents. Ultimantley they just need to find someone that can pull of that scary intiminating killer. By the way I have read your guys comments about topics for about a year now. You guys have brilliant ideas. Keep up the good work.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 9:38 PM
Dang @Tyler, You and @Riden, I can't think of anyone else for Riddler anymore but Michael C. Hall! He just feels like Riddler to me! The rest don't even compare not even Crispin but Crispin's perfect for the Joker!

I don't understand ppl saying that no one can replace Heath as the Joker when he replaced Nicholson in the first place. If someone dies on a show or movie they have always replaced the deceased actor before. Why should it be any difference with Heath. I bet he would be the first one to say that too. He was a penultimate journeyman actor and would have always said, "The show must go on!"
DDD - 9/5/2009, 10:17 PM
@ DDD I agree. In the immortal words of the late great Freddy Mercury;
"The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on"

Just because Heath has passed doesn't kill Joker. Crispin for Joker.
nerosday - 9/5/2009, 10:45 PM
DDD, its different because its a rebooted series of movies and not part of the first bat man movies. It would just be a waste because first, It would take an immensley talented actor to fill ledgers shoes and then it deprives that actor of getting to create his own character as Ledger and Nicholson have made the Joker their own. you see, this person would be playing Heath's Joker.
niceguyeddie - 9/5/2009, 10:53 PM
The actor doesn't have to replay Ledger's Joker. That's a stupid idea for an actor to do, because they can't mimic Heath's performance without it feeling cheap. Only Heath himself would be able to re-do his Joker. There isn't a law saying the actor who plays Joker next will have to play Heath's Joker. They can put their own take on Joker, since Joker is a shifting character, but he is one thing at all times, insane.

Anyways, I'm off till tomorrow. See ya.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/5/2009, 11:06 PM
I also agree with Tyler and have said the same thing myself before; I hope that they use a villain we've never seen on screen before for the next Batman. My personal pick would be Black Mask. He seems to fit the Nolan Universe to a tee, he is terrifying and nonsuperpowered, somewhat grounded in the real world and could be easily spun into the existing mafia vs. freaks debate in the last film. Black Mask is both gangster and freak; the next logical evolution in the chain.
nerosday - 9/5/2009, 11:22 PM
Darthkyra @ dont give me credit for the poster I just found it on google to make my opinion more viable. But yeah I think he's the best Doctor in a long time. I'm not sure about the new Doctor for season 5. He's gunna be the youngest to play him so far but who knows how well he'll be.

moonman @ to add images use img src="?????" and close it off with < >
????? being link to image

Tyler @ I too like your choices in castings. Probably because you were the first to agree with Tennant as Riddler. lol To me he just seems to fit the version that Nolan has created.

I wouldn't mind if Riddler wasn't in the next Batman. I definitely think there are lots of other baddies that would be great. I can see Black Mask as one or even the Ventriloquist & Scarface. Kinda surprised no one brought him up yet.
ComicKnight - 9/5/2009, 11:25 PM
Before anyone else says it. . .
Jeff Dunham for Ventriloquist!! Lol
ComicKnight - 9/5/2009, 11:28 PM
I'm not suggesting someone mimic Heath's performance. You missed the point entirely. I'd be too taken out of the movie to see someone elses portrayal of the same character. Its too inconsistent. We tolerated it in Rachel Dawes because who gives an F about her but come on. I won't be ready to accept another Joker til they reboot.
niceguyeddie - 9/5/2009, 11:30 PM
under all the Joker makeup only one man in the world could pull off anything resembling Heath's character. Johnny Depp.
texasboy - 9/5/2009, 11:48 PM
Joker didn't die. His character still exists. They replace actor's all the time, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, but Joker in Batman is essential to Batman's character.

You can't just end JOKER 'cause Heath is gone! That is just foolish and childish. They replaced Rachel Dawes and I think it was for the better because Maggie Gyllenhaal was better I thought.

They have done it throughout the history of cinema when an actor dies in the middle of a film series or quits or is fired. Heath would want it that way. To have a consistent transition from Dark Knight to Dark knight 3 there has to be a Joker. You can't just have him disappear. Then it would mean killing The Joker off completely and that is just plain asinine!

No one can copy Heath's Joker or it would look like a cheap stand-up impression but if some one kept the essential spirit of The Joker when playing him it would transition the story into the third and final Nolan Batman. And it would extremely launch TDK3 into it's own continuation of the Dark Knight story.
DDD - 9/6/2009, 12:05 AM
Yes, @Texasboy, Johnny can do it and I truly believe Crispin can do it too! But the show must go on and the Nolan Dark Knight must finish with a huge bang!!! :D
DDD - 9/6/2009, 12:08 AM
Getting so tired of all the Johnny Depp support. maybe it's because When I think of him all i think of is Tim Burton. He's a good actor but I don't think he would be good for the Riddler or as someone suggested The next Joker. If your looking for a Sadist like Jigsaw, Crispin Glover is your man. If you haven't seen the remake of ther Cult classic Willard or Herschell Gordon Lewis' The Wizard of Gore check it out. He does a great job in reprising the roles of Willard and Montag the Magnificent. Michael C. Hall is another great idea for this role. As stated above he is amazing in Dexter.

But The Riddler I would like to see would be Calm, calculating an almost gentleman type quality. Not the over the top giggly Frank Gorshin or Jim Carrey portrayals. Or the Goth/Emo from "THE BATMAN" Cartoon. Ray Fiennes would be great for this part But here is an actor that I think doesn't get 'nuff credit. Matt Frewer. He's not really an unknown and I think he really has the chops for the part.

Dude, Johnny Depp is righteous, but Stephen Colbert would kill it as the Riddler. By the way, I just grew the balls to start an account, LEEE777 I am a big fan, you have brought me entertainment many a night.
HouserepresentativeZod - 9/6/2009, 2:41 AM
Well welcome to manhood then House.
Kratos6 - 9/6/2009, 3:44 AM
i think the one person that could pull off the riddler better than any of the other candidates in john c mcginily. (dr cox from scrubs.)
rage - 9/6/2009, 4:06 AM
GET JOHNNY DEPP!!!!
harry - 9/6/2009, 6:46 AM
Actually I have always felt this coming sequel of Batman being similar to Silence of the Lambs. And my personal choice then for the Riddler was Anthony Hopkins. But then again he is too old. Colbert would be ok if it was Burton universe. But for the Nolan universe I'm torn between Cook's description (being calm, calculating and almost gentleman) and Brent's / 2morrowkights description (Being similar to Saw). And so I agree with Cook's choice -- Ray Fiennes. For Penguin its either Danny Devito or Bob Hoskins. Now about the Ventriloquist -- how about Robin Williams?
Kalabog - 9/6/2009, 8:12 AM
Not Colbert, I mean, has he even done any acting? Being a satirical comedian does NOT necessarily translate into being able to act. Just look at Jon Stewart's movie "career": Half-Baked, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Office Party...
NataliaRomanov - 9/6/2009, 8:37 AM
I'm getting sick of Johnny Depp. I think he's overrated, and not cut out for a Batman role. And lets face it: an arch nemesis like the Joker has to come back. And I think Crispin Glover's got the skill to make it happen.

Maybe Nolan could make an adaptation of Hush for a movie, and play off of the death of Rachel Dawes and (if he is dead, Harvey Dent)

no Dead Shot. Batman already busted him up in Gotham Knight.
hushelliot061 - 9/6/2009, 8:44 AM
Gotham Knight doesn't mean Deadshot can't be in the next Bats movie. It can be completely ignored, and people wouldn't care.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/6/2009, 9:08 AM
Alright I am going to take something back I said. I just thought of a better character Matt Frewer could play. Temple Fugate The Clock King. But I still think Ray Finnes would be the best for Riddler and either Bob Hoskins for the penguin or maybe this guy. He's short has played a crime Boss and wattles like a penguin. Ladies and Gentlemen I bring you the next penguin Danny Woodburn!

the riddler can't have the comicbook style costume... nolan isnt a fool and hes not going to have 2 big odd suit wearing villains back to back
fotc - 9/6/2009, 12:03 PM
Actually I like the idea of ben foster. Hes a powerful actor that has yet to be put into a decent roll. He was Angel in Xmen3 but that wasnt really good enough IMO. He would make a good Villian and devilish Riddler.
theartofoneness - 9/6/2009, 2:17 PM
i dont think we should take this cobert thing lightly!.... i mean really think about it...hes perfect. plus hes really not that famous...(in movies) he was awsome in exit 57 and strangers with candy! wich by the way is one of the most over looked comedys in history!.. and people that over look that sort of thing, are the same AMERICAS CHOICE MOVIE jerk offs that really have no right even commenting anyway!...DEPP DEPP DEPP. yes he would be good but what wouldnt he be good in?(besides wonka). i mean think people....think. how about nic cage or brad pitt?...gay!
ProfOJ - 9/6/2009, 3:50 PM
Fotc I don't understand what you are saying. Would you please clarify your point. What suits are you speaking of?
Cook - 9/6/2009, 5:55 PM
Cook: The Joker and the Riddler
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/6/2009, 5:59 PM
Kinda thought Neil Patrick Harris would be a good riddler
supermarioworldE - 9/6/2009, 7:10 PM
Tyler fotc. If you think about it alot of Batman's villains wear suits. Joker, Riddler, The Penguin, Two-Face, Black Mask, Clock King, Ventriloquist, Hugo strange, The Mad Hatter, Ra's al Ghul Scare Crow "in the film" even Tweedledum and Tweedledee. So that really limits who Nolan could use. Also with his "real world" take on Batman that would limit his choices to Catwoman, Bane, maybe Firefly. I don't think the "big odd suit wearing villains" thing really matters.
Cook - 9/6/2009, 7:44 PM
I'm not agreeing with fotc. I agree with you. Saying the Riddler can't have the traditional suit just because Joker had a suit is silly. That's like nitpicking. It is an incredibly trivial matter when compared to making Riddler as a character feel different than Joker.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 9/6/2009, 7:51 PM
The suit's a non issue, it could just be a toned down green designer suit. Needs the bowler cap, and cane though.

I like Colbert alot, but as far as the Riddler goes it's ridiculous - it's that nerdy neurotic quality that will have us seeing a weenie cheese Jim Carey repeat of a character that has profound potential and, is begging for the ultimate iteration. I think most of us agree we don't want this character hamming it up.

For me it's still Depp all the way - he is in his prime and all the cards seem to have fallen into place for this to happen. Pull elements from all these characters: Hunter S. Thompson, Abilene, Edward Scissorhands, the grumpy bookish guys from Secret Window and The Ninth Gate, Cap'n Jack, and Willy Wonka - somewhere in between lies this ultimate iteration of The Riddler AND Dr. Strange. I envision this character ending up much like the killer Kevin Spacey plays in Se7en, and The Zodiac. If you guys haven't checked out that case, you have got to. There were alot of elements that were left out of David Fincher's movie - it's so incredibly bizarre and two of the cyphers were never cracked. He is without a doubt a real criminal mastermind who worked along the same lines as The Riddler to have gotten away with what he did.

You know I'm not even a mainstream guy, but for those of you thinking Depp is too manstream or whatever, in Burton's Batmans he cast the biggest actors of the time, and right out the gate we had Nicolson set the bar high for the on screen Joker.

Out of what I see, I prefer: Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Guy Pierce, Crispin Glover (Ben Foster maybe, he was evil as sin in 3:10 to Yuma, but he doesn't seem cerebral enough to me),

Hell with Guy Pierce, you take the characters from The Time Machine, and Memento, put them together and that's a pretty decent Riddler right there.

Crispin Glover is just monotone and creepy, so while he's decent, not my top choice.

48and2 - 9/6/2009, 11:47 PM
And actually on the topic of Daniel Day Lewis, I never thought he was too good for a comic book role, but I think he thinks he's too good lol. IF the sequel to TDK, if it lives up to the hype and the script is as great as our expectations are setting the bar, I can see the slight possibility that he may be interested. But it'd have to be a lead role. The way Scorsese said he got him for Gangs of New York is he called up Harvey Weinstein who is friends with DDL, and Weinstein called up DDL and said, "well I guess someone else is gonna win best actor for this role if you won't come out of retirement" - the script had been floating around since the 70s getting reworked and reworked, and with Scorcese directing, some kind of acclaim was in the pocket. I mean he was hesitant to do a scorsese film lol...

On that topic, with Dicaprio being in Inception, and seeing how Nolan likes to work with these guys over and over, I see him becoming a distinct possibility for whoever the next villain ends up as. Didn't say I liked it, but I see the probability increasing tremendously.
48and2 - 9/6/2009, 11:48 PM
I think Kevin Durand should play Killer Crod and Cam Gigandent as the riddler

There has been interesting speculation as to the role Coleman Reese could have in a future Batman movie, if he does reappear. One is that Mr. Reese's origin as an ousted Wayne employee is similar to one origin version of the Riddler. In addition, Mr. Reese's name, is pronounced "mysteries" (Mr. Reese) which is also a synonym for enigma which is also the comic book version of the Riddler's name (Edward Nigma or E. Nigma).

Interesting indeed

I also noticed that he had orangish/redish hair.

darkkami - 9/7/2009, 12:19 AM
he would be an interesting choice
CaptainDeadpool - 9/7/2009, 9:35 AM
great point, darkkami. the suit issue, really doesnt matter, the riddler is really one of the only charicters that translates to the real world, just please god no tights!!!!
ProfOJ - 9/7/2009, 3:20 PM
i dont know. heath ledger pretty much set a standard for the villians in comic movies now ya think. i dont know if i would want to see someone like stephen colbert play the part of the riddler. i wouldnt mind seeing someone bring a darker side to him. johnny depp would bring that i believe. any ways just a thought.
brian01 - 9/7/2009, 11:41 PM
F UCK DEPP and Colbert. the best shit i've seem on here is mother funkin dexter!
sirbonesalot - 9/8/2009, 4:49 AM
he would make a good riddler, the only thing is, i don't want to see the riddler in the next bat movie. there are so many other batvillains, why use riddler?? i loved batman begins because it used 2 characters we'd never seen onscreen, one of which (al ghoul) i never thought we'd see. in TDK, the joker was the villain, which is fine, you can't have a bat franchise without the joker in at least one. but i'd like to see someone else we've never seen in the next one. if we must see someone that's been done, use bane, but make him more like the comics, not a mindless idiot.
CorndogBurglar - 9/8/2009, 7:32 AM
@ strangemann

barbara was what, maybe 3 or 4 in TDK? it wouldn't make much sense for her to be helping bats, unless a LOT of time passes between TDK and the new one
CorndogBurglar - 9/8/2009, 8:56 AM
@ darkkami

wow, man, thats a really good catch! i never noticed that...Mr. Reese. lol. i wonder if they did that on purpose!
CorndogBurglar - 9/8/2009, 9:44 AM
Daniel Day Lewis would be the best but there's no way he'd ever agree to it...
CarlLucasLukeCage - 9/8/2009, 11:06 AM
I think that Lost's Michael Emerson would be the best choice for Riddler. He has that darkness about him that these films require and he's got the whole diabolical, mindgame playing psychopath thing down to a science. But I also agree with a statement made above...There are so many villians that have'nt made it to the silver screen it would be refreshing to be suprised by Clayface, Mad Hatter, or even Harley Quinn! The only reason I'd love to see Riddler redone is to have redemption for the Jim Carrey rendition. (No Spandex This Time!!!)
SpootyTWK - 9/9/2009, 2:18 PM
MICHAEL C HALL for RIDDLER. THANK GOD some people thought of it too! he would be PERFECT especially for the chris nolan feel. steve buschemi and even kevin spacey would be good choices but they are probably too old. MICHAEL C HALL hands down best choice.
erinisley - 10/21/2009, 11:56 PM
PS i never saw this or any sites like this before and i think its so weird that people had the same idea as a friend and i about ben foster and michael c hall playing riddler...
