Tom Welling as Superman in the Reboot

Why I think Tom ATLEAST deserves a chance in the big screen as the character he's been playing for so long...

Alright, so not a lot of media on this page, unfortunately, but I know a lot of you like to read, so I guess this should be fun.

Anyway, I know with my avatar, you are already assuming "Well another Smallville fan, this is going to be a waste of time". But, please here me out, yes even Teabag, LEE and Kyle.

For those of you who started watching Smallville during Season 1, then pretty much left after that, I can't really explain how you feel, because I joined in around Season 5, but I've seen every episode, and all I have to say is, I freaking love this show. I know it started becoming less "Superman" like, but every episode had a great action sequence, and as a show I think it turned out pretty darn good for ten seasons on a network like The CW.

I really hope for the series finale, they do a movie of some sort similar to "Absolute Justice", so we can have an awesome scene with him and Darkseid, and a really good way to wrap up the show. But I would also like it if maybe he would transfer to the big screen and bring Lex and Lois with him.

I know, half of you are probably high-tailing it outta here right about now, but seriously. How could anyone say Tom is a bad actor? I've literally scene ONE flaw in his acting and that was in some episode in season 3! By now I'd say he's pro and as Clark kent even better. I don't know why so many people hate Smallville, but I can tell you guys that after watching it for a while I see Tom as Superman and love the idea. I'll admit, I liked Routh, and I wouldn't mind if they used him again. I'm just saying, we should all at least give Tom a chance on the bigscreen, and if he doesn't do well, what could happen? Christopher Nolan isn't directing so it's not like it will be "His first bad movie." If Tom played The Man of Steel, people who don't even know Smallville will probably adapt and learn to like him alot. Now don't tell me when you heard he was cast in Season 1 you were thinking Hamm or Caville, and you were thinking, "hey that's actually not too bad for a Clark Kent". I mean lets face it guys, he's big, buff and can pull off that face when he looks at a villian and they think, "I am so fucked now". If you don't believe me, just watch the Season 9 Episode, "Crossfire", and you'll see it after he catches the bullet. So for his acting guys, I gotta say it's top notch by now, and you all know it, or haven't seen any episode past Season 3.

Now for the Effects on Smallville, I know not so good, but imagine Tom on the Silver Screen with professional CGI, and fighting like a badass? That would be epic, and he knows how to act for those too. Just because the effects on Smallville aren't top notch doesn't mean he hasn't dealt with Green Screens and wires and everything.

Here's the big one. The Mythology. What truly is the mythos of Superman? I'll tell you one thing. As good as he was, it's not Christopher Reeve. It's about a guy that comes from the planet Krypton and has trouble living with the humans and learns to live among them as their Savior, and I also know that he is meant to be rather big(Bulky). Tom Welling knows most of that whole story and has the body.

IF HE WAS IN THE MOVIE, IT DOESN"T MEAN HE HAS TO BRING THE SMALLVILLE MYTHOLOGY WITH HIM.

Like I said, people who don't know of Smallville won't even know the difference, and Chris Nolan said they're not doing the origin. I mean, the Smallville Mythology is pretty far off....from the Superman mythology. What Smallville is pretty much doing is just adding stuff in between cracks from other Superman media and comics. Just because they didn't say "Lex died" in the comics doesn't mean, maybe it was speculated that he was dead, Smallville just added that in, No big deal. Doomsday no longer had a human side guys, guess what, next time he comes he is going to kill Superman. Jonathan Kent is still dead. brianiac is going to be all computer now since his human form is destroyed(Not counting Brainiac 5). The Kandorian Clones are god knows where so we will never have to worry about them again. The REAL Jimmy Alsen is going to be a teen when Clark and Lois aren't. The only REAL difference Smallville has from the Superman Mythology, is Lois and Clark being a couple early on at The Daily Planet. Now for the glasses, there are like four people at the planet who knows who Clark is. When you see someone on the street do you take the time to stare at them and figure out their names, because it's not like it says "Clark Kent" in any of the newspapers in Metropolis either. Lex knows his secret(When has Lex in the comics ever associated with Clark Kent while he was grown up?), Lois knows his secret, and I can tell you that Jimmy isn't going to remember anything from his brother's funeral.

By the way, they made up Lionel too, which is definitely a postive.

Come on guys, other than that no one will even know the rest of the cluster of stories Smallville has, and it's okay if they do, It's not like they have to refer to them. If Tom was Superman it would be fantastic, I'm telling you. Some people didn't like Christian Bale but he turned out great and those movies are High-Grossing and have outstanding reviews. And just because he doesn't have enough "Movie Credit", absolutely does not mean he can't do it, so don't even bring that up. He has worked with several directors and for 200 episodes that's probably the equivalent of 20 Christopher Nolans.

So, today we've estabilished:

- Tom is a good actor
- The effects with him would be outstanding
- The Smallville Mythology matters nothing
- Tom doesn't need "Movie Credit"

I hope some people understand. I know it's unlikely that he'd be in it, but for people to want him to be is just enough. He won't be Clark Kent/Superman forever, so can't we just let him be for this decade? Possibly generation if we're all having a good day?

LMAO...

An dude this is not news its EDITORIAL!

I wanna see WELLING as SUPERMAN...

In a METROPOLIS TV movie!

Hey its a good read @ SOUPERBOY and just so you know I watch Smallville! ; D
AlexDeLarge87 - 9/16/2010, 3:02 PM
Nothing against him, but i just wanna see more mature Superman this time. Thats why Caviezel and Hamm are my choices.
LEEE777 - 9/16/2010, 3:04 PM
Caviezel for CAPTAIN ATOM!

You know it makes sense! : P
ecksmanfan - 9/16/2010, 3:06 PM
No, the mythology will not come with him in a literal sense, but fans (and non-fans) of Smallville will carry it over. It's a natural thing to do.

AND...Welling is aterrible actor. Have you seen him in anything besides Smallville? The Fog maybe? Horrible.
Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 3:07 PM
"Tom is a good actor" you lost me there.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 3:10 PM
How exactly did I lose you Dyyamo? Did you read the part where I came in around Season 5? You know right around when the Fog came out? Four years ago....

Tom can act now.

Live with it.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 3:11 PM
@ecksmanfan

Yeah I know what you're talking about, but who cares about the fans, their ratings are like 2.5 Mil. Average, it won't matter if it comes to the big screen.

Well after doing the show for even FOUR more years after The Fog, I'd say as Superman, he would own the role.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 3:13 PM
@ecksmanfan

And if people are thinking about the mythology while watching it, then that's their problem, if they don't have to refer to it, then why should they worry at all?

And if they just choose to be assholes and not see it at all, again their problem...mostly. They couldn't lose THAT much money.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 3:15 PM
@LEEE777

My bad, hahaha. I'm new to the posting stuff, but my presence has been here for awhile...

Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 3:20 PM
@Souperboy45
Well my post was tounge in cheek. But as a guy whos followed all of smallville since season 3 I can say that I don't think Tom is a good actor at all. The guy is REALLY wooden. And when he comes off as anything other than constipated his acting feels forced and/or cheap.
Creature - 9/16/2010, 3:36 PM
He can emote as much as Keanu Reeves can... in tights with whole persona, he'd have to be over the top.
End result? Dracula (1992). I don't think he deserves it. When Superman is cast, I'm sure it will resonate with most fans.
All he will ever be is Superboy! Not a bad choice, actually.
LEEE777 - 9/16/2010, 3:36 PM
Souperboy45 @ Heh heh cool lol!

Hey I've watched Smallville since the first episode at season one. Why so late getting interested in Smallville?

Have you seen the first few seasons, thats when the show was pure gold, if you haven't you should man, the writing is edge of your seat, not like now tho.

Still I do luv the DC Universe cameos, apart from crappy version of Doomsday of course!

Can't wait to see BOOSTER GOLD!
marvel72 - 9/16/2010, 3:43 PM
@ souperboy45

respect your opinion,but i f*cking hate smallville.

1.tom welling is a good actor-hahahahahaha! have you seen him in something other than smallville because his not a good actor hahahahahaha!

2.the effects with him would be outstanding-are we talking smallville budget hahahaha!they could always use the special effects to buff him up.

3.the smallville mythology matters nothing-no shit sherlock,i've been saying that for the last ten years.

4.tom doesn't need movie credit-no tom doesn't need movie credit he needs acting lessons.

nuff said.
jazzman - 9/16/2010, 3:45 PM
I hear Cheaper By The Dozen 3D calling for Tom Welling LOL

anyway Tom Welling cant actor his only good for Smallville thats it nothing more nothing less. if he did play Superman in the reboot people would want all the other cast from Smallville to be in the movie then we have a major problem.

what else u want Dean Cain also to be cast in the Superman Reboot since he played the character on TV.

AlexDeLarge87 - 9/16/2010, 3:56 PM
Lee@ Caviezel would work as Captain Atom too!:D Still i prefer him as Supes
marvel72 - 9/16/2010, 3:57 PM
@ souperboy45

thanks for posting that picture at the top of the article.

thats all the proof you need to see why he can not be superman.
LEEE777 - 9/16/2010, 4:48 PM
AlexDeLarge666 @ Cool, hey I like him as SUPES too dude, cast him as the RED SON version ages ago, your right he does have that SUPERMAN feel to him!

TEA @ Funny GIF lol!
TheDarqueOne - 9/16/2010, 4:48 PM
@Souperboy45

Not bad for a first try. I disagree with so many of your points it would take far too long to list them. You presented your case pretty well but I am sorry to say that there really is no chance of what you want.

Now about that outfit...

I am very much in favor of a new Superman suit. The current one is so out of date it is just crazy. And I do actually like some of the detailing you have there although for Superman it it seems a bit overdone perhaps.

But a belt and something that I cannot quite decide what they look like exactly. Are those briefs, shorts, or some sort of cup?
Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 4:52 PM
@TheDarqueOne
Thats not his own Manip i've seen it a million times over. It's just nightowls suit coloured purple.

p.s Superman's suit is WAAAAAAY too iconic to be drasticly changed like that.
TheDarqueOne - 9/16/2010, 5:07 PM
@Dynamo

Odd I did not make the connection to NiteOwl I do own that movie.

I appreciate how you feel about the outfit but icons can still change.
Denn1s - 9/16/2010, 5:17 PM
wow. i love the night owl photoshopping. supes needs a modernized version of his suit. he can't fly around with his underwear over his pants for [frick]'s sake
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 5:18 PM
@LEEE777

My bad, hahaha. I'm new to the posting stuff, but my presence has been here for awhile...

OdinsBeard - 9/16/2010, 5:18 PM
another one of these? seriously people, there are countless tom welling threads around. can you please post your opinions in the comments section and leave the editorials section for stuff we haven't heard 500 times this week?

it will not be tom welling. it will not be brandon routh. anyone who thinks so is kidding themselves and has no grasp on reality.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 5:29 PM
yeah...I don't know who the hell posted that hideous picture, but it sure as hell wasn't me. I have a much better one.

But guys, I'm just saying would all your guys' hearts really sink if you found out he was going to play it. You can be like Grif and read the first sentence and say "No" without thinking at all, or you maybe you'd feel a little spark of excitement? He seems like a nice guy and I think he does deserve the role on the big screen for at least one movie. He was pretty good in Cheaper By The Dozen as well...Andrew Garfield is certainly going to be good in The Social Network, your stomachs didn't drop when you found out he was going to be Spider-Man, and I'm sure you all had your skepticism about Hugh jackman with all the romances he's been in. And don't tell me "Well they're actually good actors", because doing a TV Show for 10 years is proof that the acting is good enough to last that long, and if he can do intermediate acting for ten years, with a good director and script, he can do professional acting for well over two hours.

BTW, movies have reshoots, Smallville doesn't.

You wan't proof? Go watch Season 9, Episode 18, "Upgrade" and watch him run into a table clearly. Not going to happen in a film.

And again guys, I'm not just saying this because I am a Smallville fan, but I am a very big fan of Superman, and I wouldn't mind for a second if Tom Welling played him for one out of the 6 movies there is about him in under 40 years.

Let's face it. It can't be as much as a catastrophe as Batman and Robin.

Oh boy.

@LEE, I've seen every episode, but I joined in on watching it on TV in 2005
Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 5:29 PM
@TheDarqueOne
And I appreciate your feelings and your respectfulness (is that a word) but I consider myself someone who is quite open to change but I think Superman as a character works best when you stick to the traditional.
For the suit itself, can it be modernised? Yes. Just in the same way as the FF suits were modernised. But gloves and armour/rubber aren't the way to go. I'm not saying I want a Donner Superman suit or even a Dean Cain one.

I'm part of a Superman forum and they have some cool designs, take a look at these:
http://img143.imageshack.us/i/mrfantastic1ioangruffud.jpg/
OdinsBeard - 9/16/2010, 5:35 PM
Dynamo@ what they need to do is have an artist design all the costumes for kypton. what Jor-el and others would wear on krypton and mix those designs with the traditional super-suit. becuase if his suit is supposed to be of kryptonian (alien) origin/decent then i think a little spicing up of the suit is in order. and it should have some alien flavor to it. not much, like you said, but a little.

i just think it needs to have more texture and more depth to it. rather than a skin-tight weightlifter costume from the 30's. cuz i mean with all due respect- that's what it is.
Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 5:41 PM
@Odinsbeard
More Texture and depth? Yes sure. Im all for that. And so are many Superman fans. Just dont change it too much. Personnaly I like the suit being made by his mother with Kryptonian materials based on Kryptonian designs rather than just outright Kryptonian.
A) That allows the suit to symbolises Superman accepting both sides of his heritage
B) What Aliens wear red shorts?

And yes, Red shorts have to stay. ;)
jazzman - 9/16/2010, 6:11 PM
@Souperboy45

u cant never compare Andrew Garfield with Tom welling. Andrew Garfield has proven to be a good actor with different range i guess u never seen Red Riding tv series, also Andrew Garfield got the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor for "Boy A". plus he got a great Filmography.

Tom welling has the worst Filmography from Cheaper By The Dozen 1-2 and The Fog remake and guess what they all failed.

@Dynamo + OdinsBeard

the red shorts need to go if Batman does not wear it Superman does not need to wear them shorts too its so outdated.

anyway something like this costume would be better for the Superman reboot it was done by someone on the net.

Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 6:47 PM
@Jazzman
It's not the same concept. Batman can get away with it because he's always been about stealth and hiding in the shadows.
Superman on the other hand has always been about bright colours and embracing the fantatic nature of comics. Its about accepting the traditional values and heroism, Supermans look needs to reflect that.

UGH. Thats suit is hideous.
jazzman - 9/16/2010, 6:57 PM
@Dynamo

what the hell that has nothing to do with his red shorts. they have to get rid of it cause its outdated. plus Superman had different costumes without shorts so the traditional suit should also have no shorts reason why cause it look stupid to the general public nowadays. all the colours and everything can stay the same but no shorts outside his costume.

YourMomNaked - 9/16/2010, 7:00 PM
I haven't seen this kind of fan support for an actor to play a specific role since, well, Reeves for Superman! Nice publicity for Smallville, too. Welling FTW!
Dynamo - 9/16/2010, 7:03 PM
@jazzman
People would argue that the character of Superman is out dated aswell. There hasn't been a single adaptation in which Superman doesn't have the shorts. That's like getting rid of his cape. The shorts are iconic, they need to be kept IMO.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 7:05 PM
@jazzman

Why can't I compare them? Tom Welling has one several awards, I'm going to compare them as long as they are both occupying, actors. I'm not sure if you know what acting is, but it's maintaining the illusion that the film is suppose to get. I've never seen that with garfield....but I've never seen that with Welling either. Just because The Fog remake was low budget and pretty much unknown....doesn't mean Welling is a bad actor. If the movie was good you'd be talking different, it's just the way it is man.

I'm not trying to be rude, but come on, give him a little credit, again a TV Show for a character that you have to be in the spotlight of can be tough, and most of the time he does a good job, and he's been doing it for 10 years.

Give him a break.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 7:05 PM
I mean I've never seen both of them NOT carry the illusion,

sorry about that.
jazzman - 9/16/2010, 7:20 PM
@Souperboy45

i have seen Tom Welling acting on smallville and no way he has that good acting present when it comes to film. so what he did smallville for 10 years if he played Superman people like yourself or Tom Welling fans would want all the Smallville cast to be in the reboot so we going end up with a Smallville movie. that something that I dont want to see on the big screen. when Smallville ends that it for him and he should try and get himself into some films to improve his film cred.

i dont hate the guy but his only good for Smallville tv series. remember this some people back in the days wanted Dean Cain to play Superman on film when he did the tv show.

@Dynamo

yeah people are right the character of Superman is out dated aswell. im not going to blame them this is because what they saw in Superman Returns. in the comics they had modernise the character so many different ways.

the reboot they going modernise the character to work in our times. getting rid of his pants is not like his cape. Batman does not wear his pants on film, Wolverine does not wear pants on film, Cyclops does not wear his yellow pants on film but they all worked well. so they need to get rid of his red pants in the reboot and make his suit to be all one but still keep the colour scheme.

i posted a image of an example how it could work on film. that would work much more better in the reboot.
TheDarqueOne - 9/16/2010, 7:48 PM
@Souperboy45

The picture on your article must have been added by the Editors here. I would be careful about insulting them. Most things here have at least a little picture or two added. Just makes things look a little nicer is all. If you place your own they will leave them as you wish.

As far as Welling playing the part in the movie...

The Studio will never buy the idea that people will forget about Smallville. The show is still on the air. Down the road a bit perhaps Welling would have a shot but not today. There is just too much money involved to take that sort of risk.

@Dynamo

I am open to anything that tosses the short/tights look. It is just the very model of silly superhero to the average person. To me it limits Superman because it traps him in the past.

Superman is far too deeply ingrained into our psyche for any change to really hurt him. But with a new modern outfit people would take a new look at him. He is a force of nature. He is one of the most powerful SuperHeros of all time and he deserves every bit of respect he gets.

Superman was originally created for children. In a medium that is half words and half images he has only evolved part way. He as a person is far more than he began but he still looks the same.
Souperboy45 - 9/16/2010, 7:51 PM
Now I wouldn't say PERFECT CHOICE, I just hate it when people completely rule it out.

@jazzman

I see what you mean man, but I have seen A LOT worse people go to the bigscreen and act terribly, so I just think he deserves a chance.

Now the only people I said would be sweet to crossover to the film is Lex and Lois(Except I always love the idea of Anna Kendrick being Lois Lane for some reason), but again I mainly want Welling. I care about the others, but it's not like the fanbase for Smallville is immature and going to put up a fuss if no one else is in it, and if the producer/director can't except that, then they really don't know about filmmaking, because it's about taking risks.

Except Christopher Nolan, I bet he took a lot of risks with everyone of his movies, and they all turned out great. When I say "producers" up there, I'm not talking about Chris, I'm talking about Warner brother and DC.

Hope you understand on some degree. :)
YourMomNaked - 9/16/2010, 8:09 PM
Welling is identified as Clark Kent. He's the popular choice for Superman. NO other actor carries as much fan support as Welling does. I'm betting WB would rather capitalize on that than risk casting an unknown or allowing Routh to reprise the role.
TheDarqueOne - 9/16/2010, 8:23 PM
Warner Brothers does not know about filmmaking? I really have no idea how to respond to that statement.

You are really better off hoping for a Smallville movie. I don't see much chance of that since like many I think Welling is done with this character.

What I hope comes from Smallville is a JSA or JLA TV show but so far no word about anything like that.
Protonite - 9/17/2010, 2:34 AM
With that kind of argument, Pierce Brosnan should've returned in the Bond reboot. But he didn't, and what was the end-result? A MUCH BETTER BOND MOVIE+CHARACTER.

"- Tom is a good actor"
Ummm....No he's not. He's a less popular, less successful version of Keanu Reeves.

"- The effects with him would be outstanding"
Holy s**t. You actually believe that having a certain actor is somehow gonna enhance CGI quality? Let me ask you - Do you happen to have an altar devoted to Welling that you pray to daily?

"- The Smallville Mythology matters nothing"
You obviously didn't bother to read your own article.

"- Tom doesn't need "Movie Credit""
Actually, he does. Unfortunately, all he has is a rotting C-grade TV show and 'Cheaper By the Dozen'. Oooh, impressive.
