EDITORIAL: The Hypocrisy Of Marvel Studios Fans

Why on Earth do fans continue to bash other studios that own the film rights to certain Marvel characters while they praise Marvel Studios? I mean, they do the same thing to their characters. Read on for my thoughts..

Watch the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer again. Notice the multiple helicarriers? Notice the Traskelion? These things aren’t in the 616 universe. They’re from the Ultimate Universe not many people read. But that’s okay. Because it is Marvel Studios and we can be sure they are doing everything right with the characters.

Watch the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer again. WHY IS RHINO A MECH? Because he’s like that in the Ultimate Comics…WHY IS ELECTRO BLUE? Because he’s like that in the Ultimate Comics…WHY IS GREEN GOBLIN HARRY OSBORN? Because he is the Green Goblin eventually, although, not first. Still, at least he was the Goblin, unlike Aldrich Killian, who, by the way, never had a bad bone in his body in the comics.

Every differentiation that MARVEL takes is fine. That is okay because it is Marvel Studios doing it and everyone loves what they do with their films. I like Marvel Studios too. Honestly, I’m not going to the movies to see my favorite stories (or not so favorite stories) brought to life on the big screen. I’m going to see a new take or a new adaption for the characters that I love.

I liked Iron Man 3 well enough. It was a fun, good movie. It had its share of plot holes and issues but it was an overall good film. I don’t care about villainous liberties. The Mandarin that everyone (apparently) knows and loves is still in the comics for them to enjoy but the new take isn’t for you if you don’t like the new character. Because, let’s face it, they’re all NEW characters even if they share the name of the character in the comics.

But my main problem isn’t with the Mandarin fanboys. Hell no, because if they care that much about an adaption being absolutely correct, then I applaud for sticking to their guns when it comes to other movies offered by other studios as well.

My problem comes in with the Marvel Studios fans that believe they do no wrong. They liked what happened with the Mandarin but complain and complain about the Green Goblin not being Harry FIRST in the comics? First of all, do we even know FOR SURE, that Green Goblin is Harry Osborn. Just because it looks like it isn’t enough. There is more than enough evidence to say that Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn is actually the Goblin. In fact, I think it’ll actually end up being a Spectacular Spider-Man like twist were we find out it is actually Norman in the after-credits scene or something.

However, if it was Harry Osborn, say, SONY and Webb would have crap flung at them while everyone sings the praises of Feige and Marvel Studios. Newsflash! Marvel Studios is working more closely with SONY than FOX. Marvel Entertainment has a say on everything that is being done creatively for the film. SONY even made a deal for them to come help MORE not LESS.

People are going to comment and they are going to say that Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man sucks but very rarely is there someone who can fully articulate why. I know why they can’t. It is because they HATE everything else other companies do with the Marvel properties on principle. People wanted to boycott The Amazing Spider-Man before it came out just because it was being developed by SONY. Everyone wanted it to go back to MARVEL. People who will comment that they hated the film, nine times out of ten, wanted to hate it going in and so it happened. They got what they wanted.

SONY has their own problems with making films. The Amazing Spider-Man wasn’t perfect. Neither were Spider-Man or Spider-Man 2 and the third was the farthest thing from it. But Marvel Studios isn’t perfect either. Iron Man 2 wasn’t good. It was mediocre. Everything else has been good or even great but never, ever perfect. It is the nature of the game and people just need to accept it…regardless of the person distributing it.

I think you're just upset because TASM sucks and Marvel makes better movies

Odin - 12/28/2013, 3:46 PM
You may not be compeletely wrong, but:
marvel72 - 12/28/2013, 4:44 PM
not all marvel studios fans are like this, granted there is a select few that are.

i wouldn't let it bother you so much.
ManCalledSting - 12/28/2013, 4:55 PM
People have this "my (insert favorite thing)'s dick, is bigger than your (insert favorite thing)'s bologna sandwich" mentality no matter what the subject is. There's just [foo foo]y people out there.
McNyagano - 12/28/2013, 4:58 PM
"Everything else has been good or even great but never, ever perfect."

I don't think anybody has classified any CBM as perfect. But yeah I get your point. The MCU is not perfect by any means. The Mandarin was a missed opportunity no doubt, I had no problem with Killian is the Mandarin. iron Man 2 sucked, I hate that movie ugh. Good write up though.
ruadh - 12/28/2013, 5:11 PM
I dunno...I don't pay strict attention to posters on here, so I never catch who is a hypocrite or not. I'm not into the X-Men movies, but enjoyed First Class, ASM, and the Marvel Studio movies. I don't think anything is perfect, nor do I think any of them are the "worst movie I've ever seen." I don't think Marvel Studios can do no wrong, but for me I've thoroughly enjoyed all their efforts thus far. I dunno...I'm almost 40, and feel no need to categorize everything or force all things into a black or white thing. Eh. I just like movies.
GuardianDevil - 12/28/2013, 6:36 PM
AGREED. If Fox or Sony makes a change to a character people whine that oh their crapping all over the comics!! When Marvel makes a change to a character people say things like "Smart move".

MCU fanboys see Marvel movies like this:

Is there a sticker on the back that says Marvel Studios?
Yes? Great movie then...
No? What kind of sh%t is this!!

ruadh - 12/28/2013, 7:29 PM
Eh...I don't think it's quite so cut and dry. There have been changes to several characters in the MCU that fans didn't make much of a stink about, but Mandarin was apparently a horrendous mistake on their part.

Whatevs. Individuals have certain things they accept and tolerate, and other things they hold sacred. A group as a whole is entirely impossible to pin down as definitely "always feeling this way about that, but that way about this" etc. Some fans like that stuff, other fans don't. I severely doubt every MCU fan feels the exact same way about Fox, Sony, and Marvel Studios.

I think the bigger issue is territorial children who grasp at any reason to justify why other nerds are worse than themselves. Eh, we're all suffering from arrested development. We all like comic book movies, but not all comic book movies. So what already?
Starkasm - 12/28/2013, 7:46 PM
Did someone's opinion upset you? :(

These bitchy editorials are lame as [frick]. Grow a set. There's dicks on every side not just MS fans.
ManCalledSting - 12/28/2013, 8:17 PM
Soto:I'm a Pepsi guy though :-/
Kurne - 12/28/2013, 8:21 PM
Make an editorial about DC fanboys pretending to give a shit about Fox and Sony to bash Marvel.
GuardianDevil - 12/28/2013, 8:53 PM
@OmegaDaGod & Kurne
IMHO Sony & Fox's best films are better than Marvel's best films (Spider-Man 2, First Class > MCU) But at the same time Sony and Fox's worst films are worse than Marvel's worst films. (Ghost Rider, Elektra < anything in MCU)

That said, I like all three and DC films a great deal. I've been accused of being a DC fanboy/Marvel hater who supports Fox just to find a way to bash Marvel. I'm assuring you nothing could be further from the truth. It's just that many diehard MCU fans HATE the Fox movies and to a lesser degree Sony movies too. But at the end of the day many of the Sony/Fox films are just as good as and some a bit better than the MCU. But they hate because it's not stamped by Marvel Studios.
CaptainAmerica31 - 12/28/2013, 8:54 PM
@Soto but Fox and Sony came first and without them there would be no such thing as a marvel studios so there is a hole in that logic.

As for the article, I agree. It's sad but it's true.
CaptainAmerica31 - 12/28/2013, 8:57 PM
All marvel movies are authentic, just cause a movie doesn't have the marvel studios stamp doesn't mean it's a knock off.
CaptainAmerica31 - 12/28/2013, 8:58 PM
@kurne and the marvel studio fans who used to praise other non marvel films( TASM2) and start to hate on it so they don't support a non Marvel studios movie
GuardianDevil - 12/28/2013, 9:24 PM
^Agreed. I'm a huge DC fan, huge Marvel fan too. Love movies from Warner Bros, Fox, Marvel, Sony and even {frick}ing Lionsgate and New Line.
sikwon - 12/28/2013, 9:48 PM
With the exception of the X movies ive really enjoyed most CBMs. Loved the Mandarine twist, love MoS, I dong hate IM2 or DD. The FF movies are horid and the Xmen movies are just SO FAR FROM the characters in the comics that they are similar in name only. And I like mixing Uktimate and 616 elements. Take the best parts and the parts that work.
ALF9001 - 12/28/2013, 10:05 PM
I dont see anyone complaining about rhino being a mech, they are complaining about the horrible design
MightyZeus - 12/28/2013, 11:16 PM
I love your article and i love the fact that you took a big risk to publish it. I'm a lover of cbms. I'm a person that just supports Marvel or DC. I'm a person that support's all kinds of cbms.

I just think most of the users on this site come off as childish and idiots.
DatNerdyKid - 12/28/2013, 11:37 PM
I sense much butthurt in the Force.

Seriously though, great write-up. Marvel Studios is by no means infallible. In quite the controversial twist, I supremely love 'Iron Man 3' and 'Thor: The Dark World', but I really, REALLY hate 'The Avengers'.

Just my opinion folks. I sense further butthurt...
npamusic - 12/28/2013, 11:40 PM
Triskelion
Darman456 - 12/29/2013, 12:15 AM
LOL. I realized the Triskelion typo after I published the article. I just hoped no one would notice it.
Jollem - 12/29/2013, 12:24 AM
MARBLE STOODIOS IS WINNING!!! EVERYTHING ELSE SUXXXXX!!!!!
Jollem - 12/29/2013, 12:29 AM
"not all marvel studios fans are like this, granted there is a select few that are."

select few = childish mob gang who march up and down the street daily to try and scare people but it doesn't work and just looks pathetic

it has been entertaining for years, tho
Jollem - 12/29/2013, 12:29 AM
stoopid nowanites
CarlXVIGarfield - 12/29/2013, 12:44 AM
Why? Well just look at how Sony, FOX and even Warner/DC now are hurrying to "build the universe", just like Marvel Studios have done. Obviously Marvel must be doing something right.

If you don't get it, you don't get it.

'Nuff Said!
Jollem - 12/29/2013, 12:54 AM
with that logic, it's true that marvel studios is copying other studios who have made cbms first

marvel comics copied dc comics because dc did it first
Jollem - 12/29/2013, 12:54 AM
'nuff said
Masterpace - 12/29/2013, 1:03 AM
@DrDoom hahahaha " marvel makes better movies" whta a joke.
MericawithanM - 12/29/2013, 1:03 AM
TL; DR
NitPicker - 12/29/2013, 1:16 AM
@Jollem

DC has been making movies since the 1980's. FOX and Sony have been making movies since the early 2000's. Marvel Studios began making movies with a shared universe in mind. The Avengers made 1.5 billion dollars in May 2012. In June 2012, FOX, Sony and DC decided to start a shared universe.
Battabing - 12/29/2013, 1:19 AM
Marvel Studios has put out 8 films and I'd say only two of them (IM and Avengers) are actually good.
Battabing - 12/29/2013, 1:24 AM
@NitPicker,

Sorry, but DC started a shared universe on TV that started in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series and ended with Justice League Unlimited in 2006.

No one had ever seen a media/sales driven shared universe of American superheroes before WB/DC did it.
batmanvsuperman - 12/29/2013, 1:27 AM
Tasm was awesome all u haters can eat sh#t big bag of sh#t...haha whoo
Battabing - 12/29/2013, 1:27 AM
I like Fox, Sony, and WB films just fine. It turns out they make more than just movies about men in long johns.
NitPicker - 12/29/2013, 1:28 AM
@Battabing

I'm sorry, I thought the discussion was about movies.

Didn't Wolverine appear in two episodes of the Spider-man animated series in the 1990's?

Wasn't there a Hulk TV movie that featured Thor and Matt Murdock?

Wasn't there a Spider-Man/X-Men video game on NES in the 1980's?

Haven't there been Marvel Universe toy lines?

NitPicker - 12/29/2013, 1:40 AM
@0megaDaGod

Or maybe Marvel was looking at the success of Marvel comics. Creating a shared universe is the most effective way to make an Avengers movie.

Sure, it's not rocket science to me, you or Marvel Studios, but it seems like it is to FOX and Sony.
AGoodHonestMan - 12/29/2013, 1:42 AM
So...is there another bet going on or can anyone post an article?
jimoakley666 - 12/29/2013, 1:45 AM
I'm just enjoying this run of CBMs truth be told. I don't get the hate some people have for them. I love the Singer X-Films! I love the Marvel movies! I'm enjoying the Spidey films, previous AND current. Loved Nolans's Bat-flix. Can't get too excited about the rest of DC, but that's just because I don't read 'em so have no real association.
NitPicker - 12/29/2013, 1:49 AM
@0megaDaGod

Yeah, the situation with Sony is weird. I'm not sure what characters Sony has access to, but I have seen a lot of people demand a Venom movie. I feel that a Venom movie would be a disaster if it's only purpose is to establish a shared universe. I feel like they would rush into it and not develop the relationship between Parker and the symbiote.
