We've been hearing a lot of rumors about who will be cast in the role of Roland Deschain, the rumors have suggested names like Christian Bale, Viggo Mortenson, and Javier Bardem.

Well now The New York Post is reporting that Bardem has now officially signed on to star as the old west gunslinger Roland Deschain

"Javier Bardem has officially signed an epic deal to star in the movie and TV adaptations of Stephen King's "Dark Tower" book series. The Oscar-winning actor will play Roland Deschain in the eagerly awaited Ron Howard and Brian Grazer adaptation of King's beloved seven-novel saga.

It's a momentous deal because each of the three movies in the series is to be followed by a TV miniseries. A well-placed source confirmed to Page Six, "Bardem has signed on to the first movie and the miniseries, but the intention is that he will star in all three movies and each of the TV series. It's an enormous deal for any actor, but Bardem was always the first choice."

The Old West-inspired fantasy epic sees Deschain on a journey to find the mythical Dark Tower, with the hope of saving civilization.

I know a lot of you already had Javier pegged for the role but now that it seems to be official what do you guys think?

Nooooooooo! No, no, no, no, no!!!
Bardem is an amazing actor, that goes without saying. But he is not Roland, not the Roland I had in my mind. No :(((

Currently reading the second book. The first book was a difficult read, had to turn back a lot, but I hear it gets much, much better! Looking forward to see how Ron Howard brings this tale to life. I don't think it will be an easy task.

Bardem is the kind of actor that the critics will adore, but he will not put asses in seats. They needed a bigger star to sell this unusual story.

Oh well, too late. Guess they don't want to make a profit?

wow. sounds great but isn't he a bit old? i think roland is pretty young. great nevertheless.
NotU - 4/27/2011, 1:16 PM
not my 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice for Roland, but he's a great actor, and I'm just glad they're are making this series into movies in my lifetime. I hope they have enough sense to make:

Movie 1: Gunslinger (Which is short)/Drawing of the 3/ Wastelands
TV: Wizard and Glass
Movie 2: Wolves / Song
Movie 3: The Dark Tower (WITH NO HOT CHOCOLATE ENDING PLZ!!!)

Maybe Alf is available to play Oy.

Viggo would have been PERFECT. But Javier will also do.

ironpool007 - 4/27/2011, 2:28 PM

redcorn44 - 4/27/2011, 2:49 PM

robvillain - 4/27/2011, 3:21 PM
Bardem will be awesome, but I wonder who will play the gunslingers when they're young?
JudgeDrok - 4/27/2011, 3:38 PM
Yet to read any of the Dark Tower books/comics but really want to get into them. As for the casting, I think it's about time Bardem got a franchise under his belt
theradioactivecore - 4/27/2011, 4:07 PM
Great!
RedBoar2582 - 4/27/2011, 4:19 PM
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!FINALLY OFFICAL !!!!!!!!!!
I cant wait till they start filming!!!! Ive read all the books twice plus some of the other overlaping books and I get the comics. For years I thought it could never be done on film but Im convinced it will be awesome.
MasterBlaster - 4/27/2011, 6:33 PM
A "cracked out" skinny/slim Christian Bale would be a BADASS Eddie Dean.
Devilhunter318 - 4/27/2011, 7:48 PM
I cant help but imagine B.J. Novak as Eddie Dean... is it terrible? perhaps, but he sure as hell looks like him in my mind
RedBoar2582 - 4/27/2011, 8:52 PM
Bardem and whoever else gets the parts have to bring there A game and more. Its such a complex story and the changes the characters all go through .
PunkRockMachine - 4/27/2011, 9:42 PM
Get ready for an unfaithful Roland because of his stupid Spanish accent
Loadmaster - 4/27/2011, 9:46 PM
Hooraay for Bardem. I'm really curious to know who they
gonna pick for the role of Detta Walker/Odetta Holmes/Susanah.
Shadak - 4/27/2011, 9:47 PM
I wish Steve Buscemi was younger.. i pictured him as Eddie when i was reading it...
thisheart - 4/28/2011, 12:41 AM
Interesting approach with the movies and mini-series in between.

I kinda think Bardem would have been the perfect Bane as well. I haven't read the Dark Tower books, read the first collection of the comics and liked it.

Steven King is a great writer so I think it could be good, it will likely depend on Ron Howard's direction.
panathatube - 4/28/2011, 1:40 AM
He is one hell of an actor
NorrinRaddical - 4/28/2011, 1:07 PM
hell yeah! i'm all for it! thankee sai! i know a lot of folks were rooting for Vigo, who i love, but i feel like he already has his iconic character, you know?
rolanddeschain - 4/29/2011, 10:25 AM
I like the guy, and can't wait for this movie to start shooting.....that being said, I'm not totally thrilled to see him as Roland. Imo, he doesn't fit the look of Roland, and no, I'm not basing that off of his ethnicity. Viggo was my original choice. I just hope there's something that I'm not seeing that will change my view on it like how Heath Ledger blew joker away.

Also @masterblaster, how about Bradley Cooper as a runner up for Eddie Dean? I like the Christian Bale choice ala "The Fighter" casting, better, but I would picture Bradley Cooper, too
