COMICS: Details On The Intriguing WE ARE ROBIN Post-New 52 Series

Last month, DC Comics confirmed that this June would see the comic publisher shut the door on the New 52 era and shift to one where "story trumps continuity". Here are details on one of the new, exciting titles emerging, 'We Are Robin' - no Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake or Damian Wayne.

It's time for a new type of Batman - Boy Wonder. At least, that's the premise from the team of writer  Lee Bermejo and artists Rob Haynes and Khary Randolph. Their intriguing, We Are Robin series will not feature Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown or Damian Wayne.  Instead, the lead of the series will be Duke Thomas, a young African-American teenager who made his comic book debut in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman: Zero Year.  Duke is a key figure in the "Robin Movement" a group of  Gotham teens who make it their mission to protect and serve their city.

Bermejo told USA TODAY that 'We Are Robin' is a "chance to expand the Robin character past teenage white kids who all look the same." Bermejo has stated that the series will also explore just why Batman would ever allow teenagers into his dangerous world of crime-fighting.

'We Are Robin' will be released this June.

And I'm still feel 'meh' about this book.

@TheGoddamnPeel

If you have a problem with a teenage Robin, or a comic book about teenagers, or a black Robin, then you're probabaly just mentally ill.

I'm all for diversity but why is diversity only color? Wouldn't varying cultures and life-experiences/choices also add to diversity despite color?

Well, the point of the Robins looking the same is to keep up the illusion that there has always been one.

Still, this idea is actually cool as hell. It takes the "Batman has inspired everyday citizens" into much more realistic territory than someone puts on a suit and instantly becomes a vigilante. Plus I've always felt like the Batman mythos in particular needed more diverse characters. I just wonder if Batman will be cool with them operating? They sound like they'll be fairly untrained. I hope that they don't replace the actual Robin though. There has to be room for them to operate in Gotham while Damien (Or Tim or whoever) fights at Batman's side on a more official basis. I'm still confused on what "story trumps continuity" means though. Will these titles not be connected into a cohesive universe? Cuz that's always been ont of my favorite parts of reading comics.

'If you have a problem with a teenage Robin, or a comic book about teenagers, or a black Robin, then you're probabaly just mentally ill.'

If I had a problem with a 'teenage' robin, then I'd probably have hated all the other robins dipshit but I didn't. The problem with this series is that it's going to be a bunch of mary sue characters that are going to have one run, no one's going to buy any issues or care for the characters, then in half a year's time the series is going to be dropped like a ton of bricks.

I'm all for a black Robin, but not an entire series for a bunch of random people who are all like 'Look, I'mma superhero now lolz' type of thing. They're not real robins, they're just random people trying to cash in and culturalise Batman and Robin - that is just not right in the comics world.

You people know about only one character that's in this series. Clearly there are several so it has a chance to bring in an interesting range of characters.

This actually reminds me of Angel. Angel was the god vampire taking out the evil dangerous monsters. Meanwhile, a gang of young people banded together to defend their neighborhoods from the vampires.

Face Palm.

I was really excited that this title might be a Robin team-up beyond the Bat; Dick Tim, Jason and Damien teaming up and working behind Batman's back would have been awesome.

The reason all Robin's look the same is because they are designed to look the same by Batman; at one point it was revealed that Jason is actually Ginger but Bruce dyed his hair to look like Dick- because Bruce really wanted a dick clone? Because for the sake of the legend of immortal Batman it may have been to promote the idea of an ageless Robin?

This idea was quickly forgotten/ scrapped and doesn't present itself post 52.

I really hope that this takes place at least after Dick becomes Robin. His choosing the name and designing the costume in honor of his parents is a really important foundation for all the Robins to come, in my opinion. As someone who loves seeing varying interpretations of Robin (especially the costume), this seems like it'll be fun. I'll definitely be picking this book up.

I don't think the whole "There's only ever been one Robin" thing as to why they all look the same doesn't quite work, since pretty much the entire criminal underworld as well as the general public tend to be aware that Nightwing was Robin, and that each Robin was indeed a different person. I think it might stem from more of a design aspect, where the black hair helps balance out the colors of the suit.

So, instead they're going to explore the Robin character on teenage black kids who all look the same?
