Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son) has been tapped to write the planned remake of Godzilla. He currently wrote screenplay for Seventh Son for Legendary which is currently in pre-production. Apparently,the brass at Legendary are so impressed with his work that he's being given the responsibility to kickstart a potential tentpole franchise for the company. Sounds risky to me, seeing as he virtually has no other credits to his name unless you count writing a litany of films that were later re-written by others. Time will tell if that trend of near misses continues here or if this is indeed Mr. Borensstein's big brake.

Gareth Edwards, the director of the indie sci-fi movie Monsters, is attached to direct the Legendary Pictures film. Warner Bros. will distribute through Legendary.

David Goyer (The Dark Knight)worked on the last version of the script. It's currently unclear as to whether this will be a brand new script or simply a reworking of Goyer's efforts.

Godzilla (ゴジラ Gojira?) is a daikaijū, a Japanese movie monster, first appearing in Ishirō Honda's 1954 film Godzilla. Since then, Godzilla has gone on to become a worldwide pop culture icon starring in 28 films produced by Toho Co., Ltd. The monster has appeared in numerous other media incarnations including video games, novels, comic books, television series, and an American remake. A second American reboot is currently being developed by Legendary Pictures.

With the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Daigo [frick]uryū Maru incident still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was conceived as a monster created by nuclear detonations and a metaphor for nuclear weapons in general. As the film series expanded, some stories took on less serious undertones portraying Godzilla as a hero while other plots still portrayed him as a destructive beast.

Supes17 - 11/9/2011, 7:55 PM

StuckInPanels - 11/9/2011, 7:57 PM

Supes17 - 11/9/2011, 8:02 PM

I forgot he existed until u posted the pics
LizardKing71 - 11/9/2011, 8:08 PM
@Supes17
I dont see why him having directed an indie film automatically sets the film up for disaster
Spidey91 - 11/9/2011, 8:15 PM
Monsters was one hell of a snorfest,I hope Gareth Edward doesn't turn the movie into a (boring) human drama.just focus on the giant fire breathing radioactive lizard.
Destroyer14 - 11/9/2011, 8:19 PM
Well, at least it's news. But please tell us the release date Legendary Studios.
MarkJulian - 11/9/2011, 8:24 PM
Pen not penn. Now you know I was watching the coverage of Joe Paterno on ESPN, lol.

@LizardKing71: I'm worried because of the lack of experience. Godzilla is THE most famous giant monster we have
MarkJulian - 11/9/2011, 8:35 PM
Better have this high-speed chase in it.

As much as I love the entire evolution of the character, I would love to see Godzilla as the unstoppable force of nature that he was in the original movie, but with a contemporary spin. That first movie, though B for sure, was an amazing sci-fi expression of a country that just got a real taste of the horror of war.
Unas - 11/9/2011, 9:07 PM
He had better keep his filthy paws off of Goyer's script.
sKeemAn - 11/9/2011, 9:48 PM
We can only pray he does it justice, but hey we have a Godzilla movie, right?
Mechagino - 11/9/2011, 9:54 PM
I hope he's just touching up a few things with Goyer's script. D:
Ceejay - 11/9/2011, 10:47 PM
If it's not set in Japan I aint giving a shit!

It would be cool if this reboot turned out to be like Rise of the Planet of the Apes where that one brought it back when its previous remake (Tim Burton's "Apes" movie) failed.

It would be following the exact same footsteps, upon redeeming a classic franchise.

GUNSMITH - 11/10/2011, 5:53 AM
I DON'T WANT THEM TO SCREW THIS UP.
ChristopherJohnson - 11/10/2011, 5:57 AM
@VictorHugo: That's Final Wars
comicb00kguy - 11/10/2011, 6:13 AM
I don't mind them taking a little longer with this film if they get it right. I'm just hoping to see a modern take on Godzilla that is worthy of the classic character he is.
Spidey91 - 11/10/2011, 6:55 AM
@VictorHugo
that's from Godzilla: Final Wars.it was a nice touch of them having the real Godzilla owning the american Godzilla (or Zilla,as they call it in the movie)
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/10/2011, 7:14 AM
Hopefully it ends up to be a epic movie :)
VictorHugo - 11/10/2011, 7:32 AM
ChristopherJohnson, Spidey91, thanks, i need to catch-up with Godzilla. The last ones i saw were re-runs of 1970´s movies.
devil - 11/10/2011, 7:57 AM
make this one worth watching
plasticman - 11/10/2011, 8:25 AM
@ Grif- I totally agree. So they announced a director about a year ago, rested their laurels, had David Goyer write a script about 9 months ago, rumoured to have decided to use a previously created Godzilla concept for the look two months ago, and are now having another writer do a re-write?

Only Superman Returns was as slow moving as this. At the pace this movie is rolling forward Godzilla should fight against a radioactive giant sloth. Slow, unique, independent.
GreendaleHumanBeing - 11/10/2011, 9:10 AM
@plasticman you mean Slothra
cosmicstranger - 11/10/2011, 9:56 AM
@Spidey91- I concur. Let the movie be about the creature trashing everything in his path.
headlopper - 11/10/2011, 6:02 PM
This writer isn't qualified.
Bad sign.
CookieNinja69 - 11/15/2011, 5:44 PM
Its simple.Make the remake a horror film like the original.Cloverfield is a good example.That movie made me realize the idea of a giant monster attacking your city is freaking scary.They need to use those elements and blend them togeteher with some signiture Godzillaness.
