I think everyone knew the original story would undergo some changes for the American big screen, find out just how drastic those changes are after the jump.

Bleeding Cool has the heads up on a casting call for Akira that reveals some interesting departures from the source material. Besides the profession of Kaneda, nothing else seems to have strayed too far from the source material. What's your verdict, waiting for a trailer or were you simply unable to get behind this one from the jump?

Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel.

Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers.

Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo’s mind. Kaneda clashes with The Colonel’s troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago.

Also, Acting Auditions are reporting that the following roles are locked after many of the below names were reportedly locked in lengthy negotiations. Of course I'd council you all to not take the casting list as being set in stone until announcements are made from the respective acting camps.

Kristen Stewart – Ky
Garret Hedlund – Kaneda
Helena Bonham Carter – Lady Miyako
Ken Watanabe – The Colonel

Akira (アキラ?) is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk science fiction film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto, and starring the voices of Mitsuo Iwata, Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama and Taro Ishida. The screenplay is based on Otomo's manga Akira.

The film depicts a dystopian Neo-Tokyo in 2019. The plot focuses on biker Tetsuo Shima (Nozomu Sasaki) and his psychic powers and the biker gang member Shotaro Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata), who tries to prevent Tetsuo from releasing the dangerous psychic Akira. While most of the character designs and basic settings were adapted from the original 2182-page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the manga. The film became a hugely popular cult film and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation and filmmaking in general.

jazzman - 11/29/2011, 2:30 PM
oh god no, so basically the story is a fricking joke plus they cast all the good guys to be white and one asian to be the bad guy once again Hollywood has done it again.

Richardness - 11/29/2011, 2:31 PM
Lord I hate this...SERIOUSLY WHYYY?????
There is seriously no reason to make this. I'm not super strict on ethnicity on this one, but a bunch of americans running around yelling Kaneda sounds atrocious to me

I'm not happy with the changes either but you had to know this wasn't going to be Watchmen. I'm going to wait for a trailer. Remember the lessons learned this summer from X-Men: First Class!
aRandomSinisterClone - 11/29/2011, 2:33 PM
Shouldn't mess with a masterpiece, I'm still pissed they redid the voices on the special edition. Kanedas voice should be the old school Donatello TMNT voice.

@GraphicCity
Touche on first class...but let me also bring up the Last Airbender. Sometimes changes DEFINITELY don't need to happen
Pontius888 - 11/29/2011, 2:34 PM
This sounds hilarious and dumb I want the original story back!!!
gdarmo - 11/29/2011, 2:35 PM
I'm just waiting for the news that they have shot an alternate ending where Tetsuo lives, and studio execs decide to put this in the theatrical cut.

Has there ever been a more negative reaction to such little info from a movie in development??

MarkJulian - 11/29/2011, 2:37 PM
@Richardness Good point. I'm just going to keep an open mind about it. Maybe it won't be true to the anime but it will be a good movie. They have some good talent assembling for the film.
wolverbatXD - 11/29/2011, 2:37 PM
kristin frickin stewart is on almost all movies now... its fricking annoying ! ! ! ! !

I'll be patient and wait to see what happens, but thus far I've been pretty disappointed by American versions of Japanese media i.e. DragonBall Evolution, Avatar, Street Fighter
Here's hoping they don't mess up Korean stuff with Oldboy
jazzman - 11/29/2011, 2:41 PM
@GraphicCity

u cant compare X-Men: First Class to Akira.
nailbiter111 - 11/29/2011, 2:42 PM
Little more info at acting-auditions.org

Garrett Hedlund has been cast as Kaneda, who is the main protagonist of "Akira". The beautiful and talented Kristen Stewart will play Ky, a powerful medium who cannot use psychic powers of her own, but can channel the powers of others through her body. Ken Watanabe portrays The Colonel, head of the secret government project conducting research on psychic test subjects. Helena Bonham Carter plays Lady Miyako.
xNightwingx - 11/29/2011, 2:43 PM
First Class sucked too.

Pass....
Ranger14 - 11/29/2011, 2:43 PM
You really can't compare the liberties taken with First Class and liberties taken with this film. First Class had a wide array of X-men canon that one can derive a film from. Akira has one source and that is the Anime film, Akira. That being said, I personally didn't care for the liberties taken with First Class.
MarkJulian - 11/29/2011, 2:44 PM
Plus, the anime wasn't exactly faithful to the manga either.
sweetre15 - 11/29/2011, 2:48 PM
@Actually: You forget that the Akira manga is another source but sadly it doesnt seem to be following that too closely either.
AlexdoxA - 11/29/2011, 2:48 PM
Funny, I always thought Ky was supposed to be female...

Just stick to the script, I more interested to see what the bikes are going to look like just Tron!

LRascal - 11/29/2011, 2:51 PM
Its smart for them to use elements from the Manga that were not in the original film.
LRascal - 11/29/2011, 2:53 PM
or is should say would be.
jazzman - 11/29/2011, 2:54 PM
@GraphicCity

maybe not but it was close enough to the Manga not like this cr*p they making.

only casting white actors all in the lead role is just taking rthe p!ss.

even Steve McQueen British film director who has done films with Michael Fassbender point out how directors not hiring black or latino actors in lead roles. if you watch the video the other white film directors p*ssy out why they dont hire them. go to the link below

I hear ya guys just stating that even if it only superficially resembles the anime that doesn't mean it will be a bad film.
gdarmo - 11/29/2011, 3:02 PM
Owns a bar????? Save his BROTHER?

The whole point of the Kaneda/Tetsuo dynamic is that they are BOTH delinquents whose childhood friendship shines through, despite an alpha/beta relationship. Tetsuo's powers reverse that relationship, but the childhood memory scene which Kaneda experiences at the end, and the fact he is saved from destruction, shows that in death, Tetsuo treasures his friendship and protection. It also serves as Tetsuo's redemption.

If Tetsuo in the film is a f*ck-up, and Kaneda is a business owner, and older brother, I think it will totally mess up that dynamic. It may seem a subtle change, but it sets up Kaneda to be 'the arrogant a$$hole' assuming a parental role and taking care of his sibling, and it sets up Tetsuo to be the bitter petulant failure.
Brothers are likely to feel a 'family obligation' to each other, but friendship can be more unconditional. I feel like they are undermining this already by introducing the family connection.
jazzman - 11/29/2011, 3:08 PM
@MrEko

Steve McQueen speaks the truth and the other directors prove they are pu**y to not answer cause they know they never have or even consider to cast a minority in a lead role.
MarkJulian - 11/29/2011, 3:08 PM
@MrEko I'm not thinking about it in those terms. If this movie just had a different name, would it be receiving all this negative reaction?
Gattsu - 11/29/2011, 3:11 PM
Im with Spock, I just want to see what the bikes will look like, ESPECIALLY Kaneda's!! There is absolutely no way they can mess that up....actually, what am I saying, yes they can, they'll either change the design of the bike to look waaaaaay better or to the point to where most of us will be like "damn, they should have just stuck with the original design" lol.
gdarmo - 11/29/2011, 3:11 PM
@Zigggggy - Fair comment, but initiating creation on another plane of existence, still means Tetsuo isn't 'alive' in the normal sense anymore. He has transcended the physical world... It depends on your philosophical point of view...
