Pandora, The Phantom Stranger and The Question are but a few mysteries made a little clearer in DC's Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) issue. Turns out the identity of The Phantom Stranger is...

For a free comic book, DC packed as much as possible into a few pages, setting up possible storylines that could and should play out throughout the remainder of the year. Before we jump in, I have to give kudos to IGN, who picked up on a few easter eggs I missed.

THE TRINITY OF SIN

That mysterious Pandora lady, the one that everyone said was so-and-so? Turns out she's Pandora....the greek Pandora from mythology. She was punished for her classic sin by the The Circle of Eternity, who are simply the first users of magic. [Some wild speculation out there as to who these people are.] It's interesting to note the surroundings as The Circle metes out punishment to Pandora and two other individuals. This is indeed The Rock of Eternity, the same place briefly glimpsed in the Shazam backup story in Justice League #7 although it's a lot brighter here.

NOW

THEN

Arguably the biggest reveal here concerns The Phantom Stranger, a figure long shrouded in mystery. He's given a definitive, "biblical" origin in this panel below.

If you're rusty on your biblical lore or can't connect the dots, DC is all but shouting that The Phantom Stranger is none other than Judas Iscariot.

The last member of The Trinity of Sin is a familiar character who's now, not so familiar as his new backstory will surely ignite a firestorm of controversy. Vic Sage aka The Question was a lovable, nutcase who no one really took serious yet always got the job done [in his own way]. Well, here's his new, decidedly different origin....

Judging by the historical/mythological nature of Pandora and Judas, it wouldn't be a far stretch to assume that The Question is really someone similar. We'll have to wait and see when and where he turns up in The New 52 and if he has adopted the Vic Sage persona. I'd have to say this was a pretty interesting issue for a FCBD special and is definitely a must have if you've been following any of THE NEW 52. Oh, and before we go, there was also this.....

Thumbs up!

I expect any moment now to see Marvel hate.
SuperSomething616 - 5/10/2012, 8:53 AM
Hmmm interesting...
Dedpool - 5/10/2012, 8:56 AM
This was a great FCBD issue! I'm really loving what they're doing. The Trinity of Sin is pretty cool! I also want to know who everyone else is on that Council at the Rock of Eternity.
ScabbyJ - 5/10/2012, 9:10 AM
The phantom stranger is when you sit on your left hand for
An hour...
jk
No I'm not.
mrHJK - 5/10/2012, 9:11 AM
Seriously, the only time I can remember being impressed by a FCBD issue.. Can any one suggest a DCnU title (that isn't Batman)?
CrowPirate1 - 5/10/2012, 9:17 AM
heeeeeeeeeeeyy.. that basement looks like the end basement from Cabin the Woods, Joss's Movie...

okay.. I had to do one possiblity for a hate thingy. lol

anyway... sounds interesting.....
Jolt17 - 5/10/2012, 9:18 AM
Very interesting. I'd still prefer the classic Question, though, but I also need to see more of this. Also, seems like John Stewart will also appear as the Green Lantern...with a pretty nice costume.
CrowPirate1 - 5/10/2012, 9:20 AM
Speaking of Shazam.. I wish, when they were picking the 52, they had picked major figures like him as one of the books. I collect them all, but I am almost done (getting bored) with about 5-8 of the 52 already..

blackagar94 - 5/10/2012, 9:32 AM
love the issue, but I think that some religious people might be upset by the reveal of phantom stranger being Judas. the character might loose a lot of fans.well at least he doesnt have his own series, so no big deal. + it was interesting to see that the main earth is aware of the existence of earth 2.
Wildaniel - 5/10/2012, 9:43 AM
Yeah this was the best FCBD comic, lol.
siggisuperman - 5/10/2012, 9:49 AM
I love how everytime DC tease some big comic event, the fan speculation is always way more epic and clever than what they end up doing
BlackFlash - 5/10/2012, 9:51 AM
Please tell me that's John Stewart because that GL costume is boss.
LAWLZY96 - 5/10/2012, 9:54 AM
@mrHJK I recommend Animal Man and Swamp Thing; they both highlight an eerie mystical aspect of the DCU and they'll be crossing over soon, two of the best books at DC other than Batman. Also, Aquaman.
ClarkFarley2012 - 5/10/2012, 9:59 AM
Huh??
Killscreen - 5/10/2012, 10:21 AM
Not to split hairs but I would disagree with the word definitive to describe Phantom Stranger. While I agree that all signs are pointing to Judas Iscariot, unless DC announce either in narrative or in a press release etc that he is Judas then the character is not actually defined as Judas. You said as much yourself when you said that "DC is all but shouting".
Just scratching an itch here.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 5/10/2012, 10:25 AM
Actually with the Phantom Stranger being Judas, it will make an interesting storyline to see what it will take to redeem himself. Need to get this FCBD issue.
Mercenary - 5/10/2012, 10:32 AM
Im calling question as either Remus (romulus?) Or Kane.
rbfn04 - 5/10/2012, 10:41 AM
Sure, grab a loved character and change everything about him...

Also, more hero vs hero fight... Great new idea..
RexDartEskimoSpy - 5/10/2012, 10:58 AM
I prefer Alan Moore's Phantom Stranger origin - that he was an angel who refused to take sides in Lucifer's war on heaven and was punished for his indecision. Of course, that wasn't DC canon, but neither is any of this DCnU stuff as far as I'm concerned...

I get an Alexander the Great type of vibe from the Question. Someone known for arrogance and power. Seems like Cain really should be one of them, but he and Abel are already characters in Gaiman's Sandman.
HarrisonBergeron - 5/10/2012, 11:16 AM
Can someone spell out these "obvious" clues that Phantom Stranger is Judas? All I see are the coins. which would work for any greedy person.

THAT IS NOT JOHN STEWART! Why would the Guardians go to all the trouble of destroying the various corps, including the Green Lanterns, just to make John Stewart their new Lantern? That is "the first green lantern".
HarrisonBergeron - 5/10/2012, 11:19 AM
I didn't even notice before, that does not seem to be Black Adam in Black Adam's costume. It looks more like Captain Shazaam or whatever we are going to be calling Billy Batsan's character.
Helena - 5/10/2012, 11:38 AM
The only two good pages of that comic were the Batman Inc. preview ones.

Geoff sucks. He didn't until Flashpoint. I don't know what happened.
plasticman - 5/10/2012, 11:40 AM
I loved the Question. This just sounds like it could be interesting or turn him into a mythical farce. Why couldn't Plasticman enter the New52 with this much fanfare?
Tevii - 5/10/2012, 11:49 AM
@mrHJK - Animal Man is great. Deathstroke was great but now Liefeld is on it, so it may not last 1-9 were good.
Aquaman, of course Justice League, Batwing is pretty good, Green Lantern is great, GL Corps is good, Red Hood has great artwork, and Suicide Squad is decent
Shaman - 5/10/2012, 12:12 PM
Helena- The only good thing Geoff's writing at the moment is Aquaman... which i can't figure out why. How do you completely rock the house with the shittiest character in comic history yet completely suck balls with books that should pretty much write themselves like Justice League or Green Lantern. I dunno...

In my opinion, the only New52 books worth reading are:

Red Hood and the Outlaws
Aquaman
Batman
Superboy
(Batwing, Voodoo & Catwoman are worth it art-wise)

Swamp Thing & Animal Man are the two most overrated books i've ever seen. "The Red", "The Green" and "The Rot"... pfffft, please.
mikesinuman - 5/10/2012, 12:14 PM
phantom stranger is not judas escariote, he doesn't have a beard.

the question is ynnnmmnfnn, that's the name he is shouting. LOL!
Midorisama - 5/10/2012, 12:22 PM
i think the question is alexander the great bc he speaks of rising to power again and how the world fears his name plus PS has to be judas bc he says forgive me like "HE" would, he being jebus
Midorisama - 5/10/2012, 12:25 PM
or the question is julius ceasar >.>
geokouba007 - 5/10/2012, 12:27 PM
THE QUESTION IS............ALEXANDER THE GREAT
MarkJulian - 5/10/2012, 12:37 PM
Geoff Johns pretty much confirmed everything on twitter.
mikesinuman - 5/10/2012, 12:44 PM
phantom stranger is not judas escariote, he doesn't have a beard.
and those are just silver coins, but not 30 pieces.

the question is
caligula ceasar.
mikesinuman - 5/10/2012, 12:46 PM
phantom stranger is not judas escariote, look at his boots. judas don't wear that kind of boots.
Shaman - 5/10/2012, 12:52 PM
I say The Question is King Arthur.
Shaman - 5/10/2012, 12:55 PM
...killed his own son, didn't he?
JohnnyKrypton - 5/10/2012, 1:02 PM
*tt* ...sigh....

Reckoner - 5/10/2012, 1:09 PM
First: sorry my english

Second: In 1987 DC publish a secret origin spin off from Legends with 4 possibles origins. The first story is drawn by Jim Aparo, drawing his last Phantom Stranger story, written by Mike W. Barr

In this web all can read what is about:

Let The War Begin!!!!!!!
SoulAllFlush - 5/10/2012, 2:03 PM
Question could be Alexander the Great ... ? Just can't think.
SolidSnake007 - 5/10/2012, 2:20 PM
How is Judus and Pandora even around the same age? If Pandora was banished when she opened the box then wouldn't that mean that the box was only open around 2000 years ago? SO what, the earth was just peachy before that? Yeah right... come on........
FlixMentallo21 - 5/10/2012, 3:47 PM
I think all those members of the Circle of Eternity are thunder gods and godesses from different pantheons.
