Mark Waid Says DAREDEVIL Is 'Tailor-Made' For Television

The current writer for Marvel's Daredevil series thinks that "the Man Without Fear" would be great as a crime drama on television.

Mark Waid has been knocking it out of the park over on Daredevil, it's one of the more consistent mainstream comics on the market these days. So how does he feel about the rights to the character returning to Marvel Studios? Here's what he had to say about whether he prefers a film or television show for Daredevil.

WAID: I’d love to see it as a TV series rather than a movie, if given the choice — I think it’s tailor-made for an adult crime show, particularly now that we’ve clearly defined Matt and Foggy’s legal practice as advisors and coaches to those who choose to represent themselves in court for whatever reason. Get Central Casting on the line and find me a David Duchovny who can fight like Jet Li!

Agree or disagree? Should ol' horned head join the MCU or get his own television show? I've seen many comments on the site that support the latter so if you feel otherwise sound off below in the usual spot.

Also, be sure to click the source link to read what Waid has to say about his plans for the Hulk as he takes over writing duties on the jade giant's solo series as part of the MarvelNOW! launch.

hmm...yes. that would fit nicely with a punisher t.v. show. maybe a marvel knights television series
DCjohnny - 8/21/2012, 10:28 AM
daredevil could be a great tv show.... and could be tie in with the avengers.......
Maxi91291 - 8/21/2012, 10:31 AM
dcjohnny I completely agree
bemond - 8/21/2012, 10:32 AM
Movie,TV Show, Doesn't matter. Just do somthing already! Im dying to see more live action DD that does not include Jennifer Garner as Elektra!
SimyJo - 8/21/2012, 10:32 AM
Maybe they should, and Marvel (i hope) will do well with their tv series. Its about time TV superhero shows came around again, I used to love tuning into the Spider-Man and Incredible Hulk tv shows.
JayTopStix - 8/21/2012, 10:33 AM
I completely agree. TV would be waaaay better
continuezero - 8/21/2012, 10:34 AM
I wish Marvel would do seperate TV shows set in the existing Marvel Universe. Daredevil, Blade, Punisher, Heroes for Hire would all be bad ass. Do them in an AMC style and have them cross over. Probably asking for too much but that would be unreal. They can only do so many movies, why have all these guys sit on the shelf or developement hell?
KeithM - 8/21/2012, 10:35 AM
Definitely.

It's a perfect fit, as Waid says.

Guest starring Jennifer Walters occasionally perhaps?
ralfinader - 8/21/2012, 10:35 AM
I agree, DD would appeal to me more as a weekly show than a movie.
SimyJo - 8/21/2012, 10:36 AM
I'd like to see either 'Runaways' or an 'Avengers; The Initiative' live-action tv series.
CapFanLex005 - 8/21/2012, 10:39 AM
im in
SimyJo - 8/21/2012, 10:40 AM
...and lets face it, its going to take DC an age to get off their backsides, take their fingers out of their ears and listen to the fans that a live-action Batman tv series is far better suited for the IP going forwards and for the character's rogue's gallery re: independant story-arcs.
So in the meantime good luck to Marvel who appear streets ahead in finding new medium for their live-action adaptations.
DrStrangeFan - 8/21/2012, 10:40 AM
To be honest..i agree with him..make a Daredevil Tv Series..Marvel!!!
KeithM - 8/21/2012, 10:41 AM
@SimyJo: Or Avengers Academy perhaps? That seems ideally suited for TV and could introduce characters known to us, who didn't go to the Academy in the comics, as well as those who did. But that's another wishlist for another article.

But if Marvel wanted to test the waters - the fans (I assume a lot I know) they say yes, do it!
TheLokey1 - 8/21/2012, 10:41 AM
Tv show would be awesome, would love to see one off episodes where Matt defends Stark on war profiteering charges or a DUI case or something
continuezero - 8/21/2012, 10:43 AM
@SimyJo Yeah I can agree that there's so much to Batman that he needs more time than can be allowed in a Trilogy. I agree with the TV series but my first choice would be to do it Star Wars style and do a 6 parter. I think thats the only way to explore enough of Batman.
80sFace - 8/21/2012, 10:43 AM
couldn't agree more. I posted this recently:

This sounds like a great idea.
TheOneSuperMan - 8/21/2012, 10:45 AM
@Yoss are you a chef ? That looks great but unhealthy ha. .also I agree keep DD on the big screen.
JohnnyKrypton - 8/21/2012, 10:49 AM
Mark Waid is all for anything that gives him attention, but David Duchovny?? Eek.
jessepostal - 8/21/2012, 10:49 AM
They should do a knights show where every week it's a diff character but it revolves around the same three or four characters. Dd,punisher,Luke cage and iron fist would all fit together great, and tie together one big season story
BatsFan - 8/21/2012, 10:49 AM
Yeah, a dark crime drama with nice action piece and nice court and law thing would work as a tv show. could be the one Joss Whedon develop and be set in the MCU. But it need a higher budget than regular tv show, with The Avengers money, marvel and Disney can do it.
superotherside - 8/21/2012, 11:00 AM
I'd say it would work well in a TV show. But it would be great to have a proper DD movie. I'm honestly fine with either.
SageMode - 8/21/2012, 11:02 AM
dezdigi - 8/21/2012, 11:03 AM
Maybe if AMC could do it. And I think Waid himself should write a treatment, instead of some hack cliched TV writer!
ATrueHero1987 - 8/21/2012, 11:07 AM
Either one would work...
jessepostal - 8/21/2012, 11:09 AM
Give it to fx, they do gritty tv shows better than amc imo
Rothwilder - 8/21/2012, 11:12 AM
FX would be sweet
ralfinader - 8/21/2012, 11:14 AM
It would be ABC, Disney, after all.
ClarkFarley2012 - 8/21/2012, 11:15 AM
I've been saying this for weeks lol. I'd love to see it. Movie wish the earliest it would be out would be 2015 maybe??
danica2334 - 8/21/2012, 11:18 AM
im sure they could do a better live action hero then dardevil . i bet if it was a tv show it would have only a few followers and last one season . And really there are soooo many crime drama's already , it be nice to see somthing different .
figuresmaniac - 8/21/2012, 11:19 AM
Make tv series for each marvel knights chars, then make the crossover Movie version.
Boyle360 - 8/21/2012, 11:21 AM
Hmm, I think that could work!
FennecPilot - 8/21/2012, 11:23 AM
I think this is a great idea provided it was done on a none-network station.

HBO, Showtime or even FX or such would be best for a character like DD. It would need to have mature tones and settings, rough dialogue and provocative issues.
fullmoon106 - 8/21/2012, 11:26 AM
YES! DD TV-series would be awesome, as long as it's more towards mature audience.
luckylu - 8/21/2012, 11:29 AM
tv sounds like a horrible idea just from previous experiences. i can imagine it being 27 minutes of matt and 3 of dd in an unrecognizable costume.
maxxgone - 8/21/2012, 11:34 AM
uhh, ya waid isn't exactly inventing the wheel here: every single daredevil talkback has expressed how much people feel DD is the perfect opportunity for a TV series.

while it's a brilliant idea - waid did not come up with it. i first heard that idea on a talkback here or over st slashfilm, so the boards deserve credit for this one. well done fellas!
Howardad - 8/21/2012, 11:35 AM
It could work, but it could only have a hint of the usual crime drama and definitely not on network television!!! Maybe FX, they always seem to make great tv shows that push the envelope and manage to have good story telling in the process.
ImnotDaredevil - 8/21/2012, 11:45 AM
Movie. I get the idea of a t.v. show but can't help feeling they wouldn't quite pull it off.
PapaMidnite - 8/21/2012, 12:07 PM
Still prefer a movie. An adult TV show would be cool but I don't know... Do you guys think that they could make a DD show like Breaking Bad or Dexter? I doubt it... the thing could turn into a more juvenile product than we expect.
