Joss Whedon Refutes Claims Of $100M Salary For THE AVENGERS 2

As only Joss Whedon can, the director of Marvel's The Avengers says the Deadline report on his salary for The Avengers 2 is simply not true. What does this mean for the accuracy of the other details on salary negotiations with the cast?

The reports on Marvel Studios contentious contract negotiations with its principle talent has left the majority of the Marvel faithful a little bit on edge. However, Avengers director Joss Whedon has felt the need to speak out on the portion of that report from Deadline concerning his Marvel fee and refutes the claim that he's receiving such a large figure. If that's inaccurate, how true is the rest of the report?

Hi guys.

I was going to let it slide, but I've got this sour taste in my mouth. (Mmmm, lemonade!). Some facts are not facts. I'm not going to go into the whole thing, but jeepers, I'm not getting $100 mil on Avengers 2. If I were, I would come on this site and laugh and laugh and laugh. I'm not making Downey money. I'm making A LOT, which is exciting. I'm not pretending to be a poor farmer, an Everyman, an ANYman. But that number is nuts. A few other things about me that have been "reported" that people should take with a grain of salt:

That I throw wild Hollywood parties where everyone is naked and dancing and wild and I remember to serve enough snacks.

That I can get a movie greenlit by sighing and staring into the middle distance.

That I ate a unicorn and made it winter for three years.

That I "can write."

Well, that's a load off. Sorry to get so personal -- the whole thing's a bit tawdry. But honestly, it bugged me. I'm off for a nice juicy steak. There's a place downtown that does it with rosemary butter, it tastes just like unico -- like a steak.

BYE-ee! J.

Probably not upfront salary, but you can be sure he'll get some back end of it and it will be a lot. He's worth more to marvel and the Avengers than even RDJ.

Good to hear. I knew that Deadline report sounded like BS.

Damn, I love this guy! In a completely heterosexual way.
WingHeadAvenger - 5/9/2013, 12:27 AM
He's not making that kind of money. Marvel would have found someone else who was cheaper. I didn't believe the earlier reports about the cast fighting for more money, besides RDJ, and I won't believe it until one of the actors comes out and says so. The actors are under contract. I'm not going to worry about this stuff.

I told you that story was bogus
darkcrow - 5/9/2013, 12:38 AM
I think he took a "Nicholson", like Joker Jack did in the very first Batman movie a tiny salary and a small percentage of merchandise or revenue.
Either way he is vital to the Studio and to the story.

NOW I know personally for a fact that the unicorn thing is true i got a buddy who supplies them to whedon manor
Each pound of unicorn cost $100,000

lets hope the other rumers are fake as well

Well, the article actually says

"Whedon reportedly has a “really rich deal” worth an astronomical $100M for a combination of product and services including several pics, consulting work, a put pilot at ABC, and many other elements that effectively take him off the marketplace for years and years, one source tells me."

So practically Whedon is right with his statement, but the article could still be true cause he got the 100m for more than just The Avengers2. But I still think this deadline article is very salty.

I hope that the actors ARE demanding more money.
The actors are the ones having to physically change themselves which means they work 24/7 prepping for the roles and theyre the guys carrying the films.
And some of them could be the guys who pay the price later and cant get roles after they move on.
So they really have to think about making as much money now as possible to possibly support themselves in the future.
But the biggest and best demand to me would be making sure they get other roles that are unlike the CBM stuff.

Imagine Mark Hamill getting FOX to give him more film roles in 77-83 when they really needed him.

These actors need to use any leverage theyve got while they have it.

If you look at the careers of Keaton, Kilmer, O'Donnell, Snipes, MaGuire, Jane after starring in CBMs you see how quickly it can all go away.

Only guy from 90's CBMs who career didnt dive was Clooney.

And by the way I'm glad RDJ is getting a big piece of that money. If he wasnt it would just be more money for the Studio execs to hand out to their spoiled ass brat kids and ex wives and their drug suppliers and expensive prostitutes.
The actors are the ones who entertained me. Never paid to see a film to support a studio exec.

Joss is a boss.
SnapperCarr - 5/9/2013, 1:02 AM
I like what he did with Avengers. But its funny to see hoew opinions have gone from "he's not right for the gig" when it was first announced to "IN WHEDON WE TRUST".
Flickmybean - 5/9/2013, 1:11 AM
It's funny cause its true!
Ceejay - 5/9/2013, 1:11 AM
These are studio flicks not indie movies, he's gonna get paid well but the studio are the real winners in these kind of movies. They get all the lion-share percentages on every profit margin made on tickets and merchandise that amounts to billions. Directors basically get a nice one off cheque unless they've slewed for a deal that gives them a percentage of the profits (small) In that case it's still subjective to Hollywood accounting where the studio accountants can wrangle the overheads to show multi million box office takings as non profitable against trumped up costs. This means nobody gets paid their full royalties as usual and is pretty much common practice.
TheAstoundingMan - 5/9/2013, 1:15 AM
@banesmash

He didn't deny that he's making a lot of money from this, he just denied the statement that he is bringing in $100 million from it.
yingyangpalms - 5/9/2013, 1:21 AM
@banesmash I cant tell if you like that fact or hate it.
But the money will go somewhere. Would you rather the artists get a very large share or the studio gets to clean up?
You should read the interview from John Carpenter about his Halloween experience.
He and his crew scraped together "Halloween" from nothing. They had to be innovative and they created the film, the mask, they worked hard on it. Carpenter created the music.
But though they created it they basically did it for a studio. After the $325,000 film made 70 million Worldwide Carpenter and his crew got no extra pay. The studio guys got Mansions and sports cars and they did nothing to make the film what it was.

THE MAN!!!
marvel72 - 5/9/2013, 4:29 AM
they probably offered double maybe treble of what he got paid for the avengers.

@ pro346
@ kemuael

if the avengers 2 makes anywhere near the $1.5 billion the first movie made,do you honest believe they're gonna give a shit that you two aren't interested in seeing it.

your £10 or what $15 wherever you are from is gonna mean jack shit to the final total.
NBAfanaddict - 5/9/2013, 4:30 AM
GOD BLESS THE WHEDON!!!

"Damn, I love this guy! In a completely heterosexual way."

I can't say the same.
GodzillaKart - 5/9/2013, 5:47 AM
I'm I the only one who doesn't care how much he and the actors are getting paid as long as they are not being screwed?
TheSisko - 5/9/2013, 5:53 AM
My guess is Nikki over at deadline is exaggerating because is trying to get more readers and help the actors at marvel get better deals. She might have written the article as a favor to CAA to be honest. With Joss refuting her claims in the article, she is looking like a jerk. She acts like Feige is a bully and is making a lot of enemies in Hollywood, and that actors are less keen to work with marvel. And yet from the casting rumors we get here, Marvel has no shortage of actors wanting in on the marvel francise.
kevberg - 5/9/2013, 6:03 AM
Even if the 100 million was true, keep in mind Joss has been working with Marvel for a couple years as a ' script doctor/consultant" on the movies is also working on Avengers 2. So while that figure is staggering, in context, it may not have been so outrageous.

What is outrageous is that if Joss got paid " A LOT!" ( he Joss how dya like capitalism now hmmm?)

Whats outrageous...is that he gets paid a lot yet the might be lowballing the stars Chris Evans, Hemsworth and others....
kevberg - 5/9/2013, 6:07 AM
@yingyangpalms

thats not entirely true at least in the case of Keaton.

When he was working on Batman returns he had been doing interviews where he talking about he was losing interest in the movie industry and wanted to take time off.

he made great bank, so he didn't need to work if he didn't want to.
marcvader1 - 5/9/2013, 6:08 AM
No G-fart, I also could give a rats ass what these actors make as long as we get them in the movies we want to see. This obsession over what they make is ludicrous.
Avenged99 - 5/9/2013, 6:36 AM
what he failed to mention was that along with his steak, he got unicorn dick soup. now stop this piddly nonesense and get back to making movie genius.
