According to the Hollywood trade publication Variety, the Superman reboot from Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill, David S. Goyer, Christopher Nolan and co. is currently tracking for an estimated $100M opening weekend. The trade has solicited box office expectations from various Warner Bros. executives who predict that Man of Steel will earn $300M over the course of its entire domestic run. These days, the rule of thumb for successful summer blockbusters is that international earnings will be 2x the domestic run. Doing a little math, that means Warner Bros. is hoping for a $900M box office haul for the $225 million Man of Steel. Add in the $160M the film has already earned in product placement from various advertisers and that's a total revenue of over a billion dollars. Of course, it's debated ad nauseam around these parts in the comments that things such as theater cuts, marketing, etc., etc. must be taken into account to determine a film's actual profit (for all you youngsters, that's different from revenue). Buena Vista's Iron Man 3 has earned $387 million domestically thus far, with a worldwide box office haul of $1.18 billion which matches up pretty well with the [worldwide gross = domestic + 2x(domestic)] formula mentioned above. If such a financial forecast were to turn out true for Man of Steel, imagine the announcements to be made at this year's San Diego Comic Con.
