By Mark Julian - 6/7/2013
In addition to discussing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (sounds like maybe they'll be fighting The Avengers at least initially), Joss describes the feeling of directing characters he grew up reading and the responsibility he shoulders to reinterpret these characters for children just coming of age and discovering these superheroes for the first time.

Marvel talk runs through the 10:00 - 19:30 min mark

"We are introducing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch who are mainstays of The Avengers universe, they're foes, they've been allies and they're very interesting to me because I grew up reading The Avengers. They have powers that are visually exciting, different from the characters we've seen before so I'm excited to knock them against The Avengers and see what shakes loose."

It will be nice to see them on big screen, but weird changing their origin and background. I would prefer Ms Marvel and Vison, or Black Phanter.

Extremis!

All I want to know is if they're keep then wincest.
Mucklefluga - 6/7/2013, 1:05 PM
Eh. Wrong choice of characters you selfish man!
TonyChu - 6/7/2013, 1:07 PM
Can't wait for this movie, but the inclusion of Wanda and Pietro is a little awkward for me. But hopefully their inclusion will be fleshed out well by Whedon. In Whedon, we trust!
TheDARKestKNIGHT - 6/7/2013, 1:08 PM
Don't like they're inclusion. They're Mutants first then avengers

Not trolling. Love Marvel comics. Loved the Avengers movie. Own it on Bluray.

Amazing512 - 6/7/2013, 1:09 PM
In Whedon we trust.

I know not everyone is on board with the choice of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, but I love the choice for the reasons he stated. There are many other Avengers that others want to see, and I understand that, but so many of the others often mentioned (Luke Cage, Black Panther, Ms Marvel, Vision) are not dramatically different power wise. Of that list I think Vision would be the one with the most difference. However, I think think Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's powers will really pop on screen and be dramatically different from the Avengers we now have.
WhiteBolt - 6/7/2013, 1:11 PM
@Mucklefluga

How are they "wrong choice of characters"? SW and QS both joined the Avengers after Captain America did. What Whedon is doing with them makes sense, unlike what Singer is doing.
highflyer - 6/7/2013, 1:11 PM
I'm not really fond of the idea of quicksilver and his sis appearing in Avengers 2. Would have liked black panther to appear.
DrDoom - 6/7/2013, 1:14 PM
Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have been Avengers mainstays for decades, so it makes sense for them to be in it. I just really hope the rights problems are handled properly.
gambgel - 6/7/2013, 1:16 PM
I have never seen a director talking this much about new characters ever before. And less 2 years before the actual movie.

Something about this feels off to me. Not hating, ok, guys? just what I feel about all this talk about the Maximoff
TheFox - 6/7/2013, 1:16 PM
I want to see these two in The Avengers 2... but I ALSO want to see Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past. In fact, I probably want to see Quicksilver in DoFP MORE.

I hope Marvel and 20th Century Fox can just both use the character. Honestly, that would be awesome.

this is so silly Joss Whedon need to fricking forget these characters.
charlie2094 - 6/7/2013, 1:20 PM
@gambgel

I agree with you. Especially from Marvel, they've always been so secretive and playing their cards close to their chest that this does all seem strange to me. They're being so open about this, what gives? Remember how they introduced Hawkeye into the Avengers? As part of the big comic-con presentation.

Thinking Marvel is up to something. Maybe they'll appear mostly as foes, but we're being mislead into thinking of them as proper Avengers members. Might be completely wrong, it's just not Marvels way to be so open about such a thing.

@JonathaNisMagnuM Childhood ftw!
Cartoon22 - 6/7/2013, 1:22 PM
whatever...just give me THANOS in A2and ULTRON in A3 as villains!!!
Newbus - 6/7/2013, 1:22 PM
I dont think Whedon has anything to worry about with Singers version of Quicksilver.

Having heard that the Avengers was coming to the big screen he decides to include a winged insect like female known as Angel Salvatore and nobody to this day understood why.

But with his sudden inclusion of Quicksilver for a 5 second spot in DOFP it's now becomes clearer why Angel was included...and now dumped.
knocturnalzen10 - 6/7/2013, 1:23 PM
i rpay there's a great plan to this only thing i can think of is when Scarlet witch starts tapping into chaos magic.
ALmight - 6/7/2013, 1:23 PM
Of all the Avengers why these 2, I don't see it... In Joss we trust but... why these 2?
FrenzyFreak - 6/7/2013, 1:24 PM
Why does everyone keep discussing changing their backgrounds? They can be mutants just the cant use the word mutant or Magneto. That's their only restriction. Knowing Whedon as a big comics fan he won't want to [frick] with their backgrounds or origins just say they're people born with powers.
ahhmynuts - 6/7/2013, 1:24 PM
i bet quicksilver and scarlett took the place of some other characters(ms. marvel,vision etc.) joss wanted in the movie. but for reasons unknown had to find replacements and picked them. they just seem out of place and hes trying to fix that but marketing them himself. With all that being said i still trust this man. im sure they'll be excellent additions hopefully appearing in future movies as well.
marcvader1 - 6/7/2013, 1:25 PM
Love this guy.
PsychoManiacJacky - 6/7/2013, 1:26 PM
It doesn't matter if Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were Avengers, nearly every single Marvel hero you can name was one point in time an Avenger lol
marcvader1 - 6/7/2013, 1:27 PM
These 2 characters are totally up Whedon's alley.
Brainiac13 - 6/7/2013, 1:28 PM
Its cool that they are going to be in the A2!
WhiteBolt - 6/7/2013, 1:30 PM
@Levitik-ass

QW and SW predate all those you mentioned, with the exception of Ant-Man and Wasp, as being members of the Avengers.
charlie2094 - 6/7/2013, 1:30 PM
@MARVELPSYCHO79

I think @gambgel was on about how suspiciously open Marvel is being about this when they're renowned for being very secretive and strict. Remember how Hawkeye was announced, in this big comic-con presentation.

They just randomly came out one day and said they'd be in it which seems very different to what Marvel usually does. Could be they're hiding something, or maybe they got word Fox were using them, so decided to suddenly talk about it. Who knows, just suspicious behaviour for Marvel.

I personally am happy if they're the only new members. Would've preferred others, but solid choices still.
novaprime - 6/7/2013, 1:30 PM
It want to see how This Plays Out!!!
marcvader1 - 6/7/2013, 1:32 PM
I for one am looking forward to seeing their powers translated to film more so than having more really good fighters or really strong people.
jazzman - 6/7/2013, 1:32 PM
Black Panther, Ms Marvel are better choice for crying out loud.
beane2099 - 6/7/2013, 1:32 PM
I'd rather he tell the story HE wants to tell than a story he doesn't want to tell. We've sen what happens in those cases. For examle, Raimi had no desire to use Venom and it showed.
TheWolverine08 - 6/7/2013, 1:33 PM
This is gonna be good! I hope we get a Black Panther reference!
marcvader1 - 6/7/2013, 1:33 PM
@beane2099 totally agree.
WhiteBolt - 6/7/2013, 1:35 PM
"Of all the Avengers why these 2, I don't see it..."

Because way before Cage, Ms. Marvel, Panther, Spider-Woman, Falcon, War-Machine, etc ever became Avengers, SW and QS were members of the Avengers.
Durf - 6/7/2013, 1:36 PM
It will be interesting to see what he does with the characters. Part of the MOE first maybe?

Also, I feel a strong LOOPHOLE presence...

charlie2094 - 6/7/2013, 1:37 PM
If these are Joss Whedons' choices, then there's no others I'd rather see. He knows whats happening, who the villain(s) are, he knows who fits the story best. Likes of Captain Marvel and Black Panther have such different background and the such, hard to introduce them.

I still think something is off about this. Not like Marvel to be so open and so revealing so early on. They're usually very secretive and when they do announce something, like Hawkeye, they save it for something bigger, comic-con etc. Maybe it was just as insurance for when Man of Steel hits and DC announce Flash plans, or got word Fox are using Quicksilver. Just seems suspicious to me
magnusinthebox - 6/7/2013, 1:38 PM
For me these two guys make sense, since other characters (like Ms. Marvel, Ant-man, Black Panther, Strange, Luke Cage...) would need their own origin movie first. With QS and SW you save that part 'cause they were just born that way.

Also, as stated, they joined the Avengers in the comics after Cap, alogside with Hawkeye. I feel Whedon is going that route and it will payoff.

Btw, I'm glad nobody here is a writer. No need to mention their origins or their father. (Did we know who the father of BW or Hawkeye is? Nope...)

Just my two cents.
highflyer - 6/7/2013, 1:39 PM
Why do people think singer just added the character a few weeks ago when the movie started filming way before that?
jazzman - 6/7/2013, 1:41 PM
@TheHeat

who cares they are first. they are mutants and magneto children thats the important part of the characters. whats the point to have them and dont mention their real background from the comics.

plus Marvel imo lose the rights to the characters when they sold of most of their characters to other studios.
