COMICS: FLASH Villains Getting Revamp‏

For years, one of the biggest complaints about FLASH has been his rogues gallery. Now, his DC New 52 relaunch creative team talks about some of the tweaks they are making to change that.

It seems like I've been hearing people make fun of the villains Flash runs into on a regular basis, since I was a child. Evidently, DC felt they were in a perfect position to do something about that with their DC New 52.

The creative team behind the current Flash relaunch, Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato recently talked to NEWSaRAMA about the direction they're taking the title and the character. In addition to giving the "Speed Force" a slight revamp, they're also making some adjustments to his well known "Rogues." What follows are some interesting tidbits they had to say concerning Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd and Turbine.

Brian Buccellato on Captain Cold...

Captain Cold is not a pushover. And I think Flash is in for a little bit of a rude awakening.

He's not your daddy's Captain Cold.

Francis Manapul on Gorilla Grodd and Turbine...

I'll be honest, with Gorilla Grodd, we're changing quite a bit. He's still a gorilla. And there's still a Gorilla City.

But there's going to be a deeper connection between Gorilla Grodd and the Flash than there was before. We're revamping more or less their origin and how they came to be. We're not going to do the alien spaceship granting these gorillas intelligence -- it's something like that, but different.

They're definitely going to be a lot more brutal. The thing that we really want to express with Gorilla Grodd is we want a villain that's scary. We want to really instill a lot of fear in Barry Allen. So far, a lot of the villains have reflected Barry Allen in some way. Mob Rule reflected what it's like if you run away from your problems. Captain Cold will be a reflection of what you're willing to do and where you draw the line. I won't say what the reflection is with Turbine, because you'll find out. And then with Gorilla Grodd, it's going to be fear.

Hawksblueyes: What other Flash villains would you like to see revamped and what would you like to see different about them?

Boomerang could use some touch ups here and there.

LMAO @tea: Captain Catheter!

@Pux That's something that's always gotten on my nerves too! It's really the other way around. Mr. Freeze even admitted that his technology was inferior to Cold's...yet people think otherwise. -_-

Thats interesting now only if Aquaman got a new approach
hopda5nine - 2/23/2012, 2:40 PM
Aquaman has gotten a new approach in his solo title and in the Justice League, and it has been one of the brighter spots of the relaunch
SteveRogersSon - 2/23/2012, 3:23 PM
Ok so you wanna revamp a villan...so why go the 70-80s Marvel route and just make him/her a mutant...oh sorry Metahuman...it's just lazy...it's like making Superman a dick just for sales....oooohhhh nevermind.

There could be some really cool avenues to go and still retain the avenue the original creators intended..

Flash's rogues always knew how to get to him, and at times when they worked together, they really got to him/Wally...why not work with that!

Nope instead we just mutate him with either birth/alien/or technology...sigh...

At least we have Aquaman...and Gusto..AKA Captain Depends

You're missing the point @SteveRogersSon. It has nothing to do with him being a metahuman. It seems like you didn't really even read the article. Here I'll quote it for you:
"So far, a lot of the villains have reflected Barry Allen in some way. Mob Rule reflected what it's like if you run away from your problems. Captain Cold will be a reflection of what you're willing to do and where you draw the line. I won't say what the reflection is with Turbine, because you'll find out. And then with Gorilla Grodd, it's going to be fear."
There right there, that's the major change that they're making. Metahuman point is moot

YAY, let's make Flash's speed force destroy the planet. Let's make Grodd instill fear. Cause a [frick]ing mind controlling genius ape doesn't already instill fear. Bet he'll have red eyes. Right, Grodd will ahve red eyes, so we know he is to be feared!!!!!!
SteveRogersSon - 2/23/2012, 8:02 PM
Nice rbfn04
SteveRogersSon - 2/23/2012, 8:06 PM
I did read the article ion...and what I'm saying is why vhange the look when what really makes the character is a damn good story. Instead we go back in time to "update " their looks when the classics made sense. The rogues were always neat because they used their gadgets to pull off their crimes

That's what I was going on about..question don't assume
RobinNumbah6 - 2/23/2012, 10:18 PM
I have a feeling that when flash goes over his limit and creates another wormhole, the gorillas come from a future society
breakUbatman - 2/24/2012, 12:18 AM
That name is just too old school, drop the Captain thats all that needs to happen.
greenlanternsF - 2/24/2012, 5:49 AM
@breakUbatman,....really....captain cold is a bad ass rogue, and for you to say his name is old school and to drop the captain??? it's like telling captain america to drop the captain, like telling batman to drop the bat, it's not just a name FOOOOL!!!it defines them.
breakUbatman - 2/25/2012, 10:24 PM
greenlanternsF

Firstly calm yourself down, Captain America is a military man he has the rank of a Captain. Batman is a man who dresses like a bat hence the name. Captain Cold distinguishing factors are his powers which are ice based.

So according to you Mr Terrific is defined by the fact that he's a Mr. and not that he's terrific? Captain Boomerang, Captain Cold, do those names sound heroic or villainous to you?

breakUbatman - 2/26/2012, 7:35 AM
Cool so what does Captain Boomerang do?

I just find those names sound like heroes names as opposed to villains and old school heroes at that. Captain America is old school and a captain so it fits, Captain Marvel evokes nostalgia as well, it's like putting Lad in a sidekicks name.
