Totally agree, I thought this would be average cuz Batgirl herself is a pretty average character but I was pleasantly suprised, the writing was great and the art was pretty top notch as well.
This is my second favorite book so far, just under Detective comics which was superb.
Action comics and JL can go suck it.

@WaylonJones
I would also like to add to your great review that I liked the grittynesss and darkness of it, it was pretty intense and scary with first the hostage couple scene in the beginning, pretty terryfying, as was the hospital scene at the end with that creepy socipath, the mirrror, running around seemingly unstoppable and killing that detective.
very intense and heavy.
I like.

This is a perfectly forgettable story. I expected much better from Barbara Gordon's comeback. sorry

To me the comeback has not been explained very well. The art was amazing. But I think there are gonna be too many bat influenced books now. Not to mention what happed to Stephanie and Cassandra?
WaylonJones
WaylonJones - 9/13/2011, 10:06 AM
To get the comeback you had to read the final issues of Detective Comics before the new 52 her brothers fixes her up

@TheGreatOne0207
Too many bat influenced books? lol, thats an understatement.

Let's see we got....
1.Detective comics
2.Batman
3.Batman and Robin
4.Batman the dark knight
5.Nightwing
6.Red hood and the outlaws
7.Batwoman
8.Batgirl
9.Batwing
10.Catwoman
11.Birds of Prey

So eleven in total, out of 52, yea I would say there are plenty of bat influenced titles out there, but as long as its good reading I aint complaing, but that is a crap load.

I did not love this one enough to pick up #2. I felt like the explanation of Barbara walking again was forced in order to put her back in the suit, not saying that reason offended me, but I am just not a fan of her nor am I interested in how the story will unfold. This was an alright read, but probably 2 and 1/2 out of 5 for me.

There were some great reads from last week. I am juggling between Animal Man, JL:I, and Swamp Thing for my top spot.

I might be more inclined do read this if Simone had also added scenes of her rehabilitation. Just showing her walking again is too sudden and kind of downplays the significance of her recovery. And most of the new fans they're trying to get on board probably won't even know that she was in a wheelchair without another flashback. It defeats the purpose of calling it a 'come back' story. She should've done her homework and talked to people who have been through this kind of thing.
WaylonJones
WaylonJones - 9/13/2011, 10:22 AM
Skidz @ I thought of that as well but with it being a first issue you want to show as much of Batgirl as possible then maybe get in to the recovery story in the second maybe third issue but I totally get what you are saying.

NoRegrets: Do you know ANYBODY who's been through something like that?!! They're are plenty of people who learn to live with that!!! They're are plenty of people who get shot like that and learn to live with it and thrive with it with or without the option of rehab!

I think Jeph Loeb/Jim Lee's 'HUSH' storyline put it best: 'I think of Barbara...and snapping the Joker's neck becomes that much easier. She loved the job. Possible even more than Dick did as Robin. And I indulged her, maybe out of respect for her father. I understood her...addiction to seeking justice. To rid this city of the evil that manifests itself here. Even though she knew the risks...Still haunted by that single moment..She cannot give it up. Even without the use of her legs. She is invaluable to me in her role as Oracle. And I tell myself that Barbara would understand what I have to do tonight.'

I really enjoyed it, JL:I, JL, Detective Comics, and Stormwatch. The new 52 will be the first time for me to read comics and hopefully keep up with them. I think it makes sense from a marketing point to new readers not to show the recovery in the first issue.

skidz - 9/13/2011, 11:11 AM
Raver Chri5: You just (albeit accidentally) brought up one of the complaints people have about this relaunch: that it's all 'marketing' and not quality storytelling.
skidz
skidz - 9/13/2011, 11:33 AM
I've always thought bringing Batwoman into the mainstream mix was an odd decision. I only really know about her through the 'Mystery of the Batwoman' direct-to-dvd movie. Not really a complaint, just a bit puzzling.
