COMICS: Geoff Johns To Exit AQUAMAN Along With Ivan Reis

Word broke a little while back that Ivan Reis will be leaving DC's Aquaman title that he has helped revitalized. Now it seems Geoff Johns will follow, and exit the title as well.

According to Bleeding Cool Geoff Johns will follow Ivan Reis and leave Aquaman. Johns is currently juggling Justice League, Green Lantern, and Aquaman as well as his responsibilities as DC's Chief Creative Officer. Reis' last issue of Aquaman will be issue 16, however Bleeding Cool does not state if that will be Johns' last issue. Another rumor that has been floating around is that the two are not done working together, as Reis is said to be the artist taking over for Jim Lee on Justice League when he finishes his run.

The move is coming as DC looks to reshuffle their creators once again around January of next year. Part of the reshuffle will be the possible cancellation of more titles, although specific titles have not been revealed. I think this is a strange move. For the first time ever Aquaman was cool. They needed more time on the book to really solidify Aquaman as a cool character.
Now he will just fade back into being a lame character

I'd rather he left gl or jl aquaman has been his best book.

dammit. Hopefully Johns will carry that Aquaman over to Justice League, with Reis following. So far every characterization in JL has been bad, still not sure why either.

PaulRom - 8/20/2012, 7:53 AM
Yeah I would've preferred if he stuck with Aquaman and Green Lantern. His Justice League has been good, but not as good as his other two titles. Hope they get someone good for Aquaman.

Man that sucks because Aquaman has been great! I'd rather he dropped from green lantern since we're just getting another war.

Another good question is where will Jim Lee end up?

Dammit, Johns was revitalizing Aquaman the same way he revitalized Green Lantern. He's leaving the title too soon.

I'm happy as long as Johns stays away from Batman. I wish Paul Dini would write more story lines for Bats.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aquaman is my favorite comic right now. They better be putting a damn good team on this book. Ivan Reis' art has been [frick]ing amazing, as well as Johns' writing.
Sad news.

What?! Man I am about to get the series and start it. I heard it was great. I mean, I've personally liked aquaman in general, but now that he is a million times better it stinks that the team who actually made aquaman cool is done with it. Dang.

I wonder what will happen with the others when he leaves. This really sucks. Johns was building up so many cool storylines in this title.

@ just1superguy sooo right. in terms of importance, superman is top priority. he should be delivered by the best writers dc has to offer, instead of shuffling 'em around like they've been doing.
@steverogerson hate the man all you want, but i think he's made a pretty big impact with his run action comics. grants been doing a pretty good job let's see how his replacement turns out after action # 16. i'd personally like to see mark waid take his place imo.

I don't think Adam Hughes can draw one issue per month.

Jeff Lemire (Animal Man) is working on a new project, could it be Aquaman?

Too bad, Aquaman has been one of the better books in the new DCU. I agree with the comments about the Superman books, Supes should always have the best talent available to DC.
Caveboy0
Caveboy0 - 8/20/2012, 10:37 AM
well they tried, but without johns to give the series some legs they can't possibly keep it going with anything close to the inspiration johns has. justice league is kind of crappy but since its the bigger title DC won't let him leave that. might explain why an aquaman related villain will make an appearance in JL soon.
kackbratze
kackbratze - 8/20/2012, 10:38 AM
That sucks. I read the first issues of Aquaman and it was just what I love about Geoff Johns writing.

He needs to be longer on a title, just look what he did to Green Lantern... (I f[rickin] LOVE that, although there was stuff that was no THAT good, like War of the Green Laterns for example)

Aquaman had the potential to become really epic. I guess that's it...

Good news that Reis is going to draw JL though.

Just1Superguy- God that would be wonderful. I'd love to see Johns write for Action Comics and hopefully piece together what that hack Morrison tore apart.

As for Aquaman that really sucks. I used to love Aquamans comics in the mid-90s but they just sort of became lame when he lost the beard and hook. Dunno why really. Johns and Reis' Aquaman was not only great, but the greatest book of the new 52. Its going to be REALLLY hard filling on those shoes.

@spindrift

i personally got hooked on aquaman through brightest day. he was portrayed as a man really lost without a place. he has no place on land or sea, but he has his wife and i know its weird to talk about romance with comic books, but i saw their relationship as a strength of the character. the sea has always been romanticized and that worked.

the other half of that is the art. the way his suit was portrayed wasn't pointless orange shirt, but a very regal chain mail armor. it doesn't look any different in concept, but just that added detai,l the golden glow it was not only cool but badass. he looked like a king.

for the series itself Johns has been slowly building up a interesting backstory for Arthur. Channeling the characters anger and frustration and giving him a past that makes him less appealing from like a moral standpoint, you don't like his actions, but through his past i found that he has an arc. He has changed and for the better. Aquaman's past is not really tragic, but regrettable. It's an angle you don't' see often with characters unless they are full out anti heroes which Aquaman is not.

Finally, Johns has expanded the mythology like he has done with Green Lantern. Having me asking questions about the story, just being immersed. The world is still growing and the fact that he's leaving will cut short all the interesting things Johns has been building.

Aquaman is what we call a irredeemable comic. He's better off as a background character in JLA.
