BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Hits $38M On Friday; Will It Top CAP's Debut?

The official numbers are in for Friday, and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy opened to an incredible $38 million yesterday! While a $90 million weekend now looks like a guarantee, some analysts believe it may even top Captain America: The Winter Soldier's debut...

That's one hell of an opening for Guardians of the Galaxy, and Deadline's latest box office update indicates that it will earn between $92.5 - $95.5 million over the course of the three day period (these numbers include the record breaking $11.2 million from late Thursday showings). A lot now depends on today, but positive word of mouth and great reviews should help ensure that it'll finish closer to $95 million, and if that's the case, it has every chance of beating the opening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier! Of course, some even believe that Guardians of the Galaxy will exceed expectations to the extent that it will surpass $100 million! Most of the trades are currently playing it safe by placing their bets on a $92 million debut however, but these are the same sites who also claimed days ago that the movie would earn only $65 million this weekend. Either way, this is a fantastic result for an amazing movie. Stay tuned to CBM for further updates!

Marvel doesn't need big budgets to make great movies. Guardians and Cap2 cost only 170 million.

Sony and WB should try to save more money. The biggest movie from Marvel (Avengers) cost less than some Harry Potter movies, Batman movies, spiderman movies, MoS, etc

Absolutely deserves it. Other than Captain America: The First Avenger, I would say that this is the Marvel movie with the most amount of heart. Guardians spent so much of its running time trying to get us to fall in love with these characters that no one's ever even heard of before...and they knocked it out of the park. Their flawed, they make mistakes, they're screw-ups...but each one of them got their own heroic moment to shine and get us fully on their side. What a movie!
