UPDATE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Sets New August Record With $94 Million Debut

The latest numbers are in for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, and after taking an estimated $33 million on Saturday, the movie now looks set to earn around $94 million for the weekend. We also have the first wave of impressive international numbers. Read on for details!

What a result! Yesterday, many sites lowered their expectations and started predicting a debut of around $92 million. That's still an extraordinary result, but an opening in the $97 million range is something else altogether, especially as it means that it tops Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Can it possibly reach $100 million? Check back here as we'll have more numbers for you soon...

UPDATE: So, the latest batch of numbers are a little lower than those we brought you earlier, but considering the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy was initially expected to open to $60 million, anything over that is an amazing result...especially when it's $34 million more! We also have some international numbers for you here, but the final weekend gross won't be confirmed until tomorrow when today's viewings are taken into account. A surge COULD potentially lead to something a little closer to $95 million or more, so a huge congratulations to director James Gunn.

charlie2094 - 8/3/2014, 6:36 AM
Awesome stuff! Thought this would fall around Cap 1/Thor 1, instead it's going to fall around Cap 2 and Iron Man. Didn't expect it to do quite so well, especially not outdoing Cap 2/Thor 2.

Can't wait to see it!
JoJo1982 - 8/3/2014, 6:37 AM

EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:38 AM
saw it yesterday.. really enjoyed it..Great Movie..idk if it is my favorite Marvel Studios film but it is up there for me.. the performances were great..the story was good.. the characters were great.. the humor was great..the action was welldone and the emotional moments were also well executed.. while the villains imo were a little underdeveloped..i liked Ronan.. he was menacing and took shit from no one..Unlike Malekith..he had a presence to him and was actually menacing and imposing imo..Nebula was good too and i liked her relationship to Gamora..oh and Thanos imo looked Great and Josh Brolin did a great job with the voice
EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:39 AM
it was packed yesterday and everyone in the theater seemed to really enjoy it

incredible movie all around. the emotion, the fun, the laughter and pure joy.

you don't often see movies like this. Marvel's best.
BruceLeroy - 8/3/2014, 6:40 AM
Wasn't this supposed to be Marvel's first flop?

Wasn't this supposed to be Marvel's Green Lantern?

What happened?
AsgardianHobo - 8/3/2014, 6:41 AM
I saw it last night........so sexy.

Haven't had a theater react like that since the Avengers! Was extremely fun!
EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:41 AM
BruceLeroy-that will be ,in many peoples opinion, Ant Man now.thats where they will turn their attention to next
Lozzy - 8/3/2014, 6:42 AM
With GOTG being a monster success and Star Wars episode 7 around the corner expect to see a lot more epic space movies coming out.
Him - 8/3/2014, 6:42 AM
Great movie tho
Jumpman - 8/3/2014, 6:44 AM
Saw it with my son. We both shrugged it off as just another Marvel film and here we are with a possible 97 million dollar opening weekend. Don't understand it.

Maybe Marvel should make a film about paint drying and see if they can open it to these same results. Knowing the brand recognition and the fanbase, they probably could.

Depressing.
EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:45 AM
also while i expected The Collector have a small but important role in the film..i didnt expect it to be that small
JoJo1982 - 8/3/2014, 6:45 AM
@hobo

Both times I went it was extremely packed, the Thursday screening was going crazy(I could tell it was marvel fan night).
marvel72 - 8/3/2014, 6:45 AM

MarvelFan15 - 8/3/2014, 6:50 AM
Alright, Marvel fans and movie fans in America. LISTEN UP. It's Sunday. Today is our last chance to get Guardians of the Galaxy to open up to $100 million dollars and beat Transformers 4. From right now until 4AM ET/1PM PT, get Guardians Sunday gross to be above $30.2 million, so it can topple Transformers 4. I mean it, people. This is our one last chance to succeed or else we're finished. SO, C'MON GUYS. DON'T STOP, KEEP GOING. HURRY BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. LETS DO IT.
batz11 - 8/3/2014, 6:50 AM
Jumpman just wants to suck the joy outta everything...
Maven - 8/3/2014, 6:50 AM
Absolutely amazing film. Hope to see it again tomorrow.
DLM2013 - 8/3/2014, 6:51 AM
Well deserved!

Quantity & Quality...MCU has it!
EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:51 AM
batz11-did u get my dick message?
TheRationalNerd - 8/3/2014, 6:51 AM
Saw it last night in IMAX 3D. It kinda sucked that our seats were near the bottom because the theater was stuffed but I still had a good angle of the film.

My only bugs in the film was (spoilers) how in the HELL was Quill and Gamora able to withstand being in SPACE floating around without freezing in seconds? All of that gravity and pressure should've instantly killed them in seconds. Perhaps they didn't freeze as easily because they were near the dying remains of a star that drew heat? But I was a bit shocked that they had a "scientist writer" involved in the film. Maybe it also had to deal with Quill being half alien or something.

Second/last bug: Ronan stopping just to watch Quill dance was so cheesy! lol He could've bit*h slapped him and kept going but whatever it went along with what Rocket was trying to do so I ignored it. (End spoilers)

Anyway I overall enjoyed it WAYYYY more than Avengers 9.0/10 for me. And it was good to see AND hear Thanos. He looked great!
DefcoN - 8/3/2014, 6:52 AM
This gotta be the best Guardians review I've seen on RT:

EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:54 AM
also..The Pina Colada Song was at such the right moment
GiantNerd - 8/3/2014, 6:54 AM
I think because this movie was so obscure and is being so well receivd, it will help the general audience accept AntMan and add to that movie's success.
AsgardianHobo - 8/3/2014, 6:54 AM
@JoJo

Haha, nice. I just had people howling at the jokes and there was a large applause at the end. Makes a more fun experience when everyone is walking out of the movie talking about how much they loved it, and telling people about the characters they loved.

Loudest theater experience I ever had was opening night for the Avengers, and when the Hulk changed at the end. People were standing up (almost annoyingly so) and screaming.
JoJo1982 - 8/3/2014, 6:54 AM
@therationalnerd

Their both aliens, maybe have something to do with it
batz11 - 8/3/2014, 6:55 AM
TheRationalNerd...
Remember, both Quill and Gamora aren't humans, just maybe why they could survive space and the stone ;)

Ezio, lmao
Grimfoe - 8/3/2014, 6:55 AM
Wow. I think it was a very good movie. I liked it. Not nearly as much as Cap, but I'm biased. I never really read anything on any of the Guardians. I saw them once in a great while in an Avengers comic, maybe, but I never read them.

Anyway, if Cap is to go down this year to another CBM, I'll be glad if it's this one.

"I shall bathe the starways in your blood" ~ Thanos
EzioKenway1225 - 8/3/2014, 6:56 AM
TheRationalNerd-the space thing didnt bug me because Yondu came in pretty quick and picked up Quill and Gamora..also i really liked the distraction because first all,Star Lord loves to dance, haha, and second, he was doing it so rocket could build the Hadron Enforcer again
JoJo1982 - 8/3/2014, 6:57 AM
Honestly much like the avengers
I would be entertained just by seeing the gotg sitting at a table for 2 hours, arguing amongst each other
