Those of you feeling sore about the fact that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat Guardians of the Galaxy to the top spot this weekend at the North American box office should now be able to sleep a little easier, eh? In all seriousness though, the fact that the movie didn't stay on top is largely irrelevent, especially as it clearly has some serious staying power. It's still too early to say what James Gunn's first big budget blockbuster will ultimately end up finishing with worldwide, and it could be some time before we find out due to the fact that it doesn't hit China - a country which could add a huge amount to its final box office haul - until October. The fact is though, there's no way Marvel are regretting their decision to announce a sequel for a 2017 release before this one even hit theaters as some sceptical fans didn't think Guardians of the Galaxy would reach as much as $300 million after its entire run, never mind in just 10 days! What do you think?

MarvelFan15 - 8/10/2014, 8:46 AM
Well, at least Guardians passed T4's 10-day record. That's the good news.
MarvelFan15 - 8/10/2014, 8:47 AM
Guess Guardians set the new record best 10-day gross of 2014.
npamusic - 8/10/2014, 8:48 AM
"GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will drop in China Oct. 10th, Japan Sept. 13th."

Damn, sucks to live in China/Japan right now..
Marvel1997 - 8/10/2014, 8:48 AM
Holy SH*T
MrMartinMarvel - 8/10/2014, 8:49 AM
Seeing how McNyagano hasn't commented since his incident with Josh, it seems as though I'll have to do his job for him…
AlexanderLykins - 8/10/2014, 8:50 AM
@npamusic
It always sucks to live in China or Japan.
AlexanderLykins - 8/10/2014, 8:51 AM

Hail Hydra...for @McNy?!
Reasonnnn - 8/10/2014, 8:55 AM
Guardians is going to make so much in China. There's literally nothing out when it comse to blockbusters.
SauronsBANE - 8/10/2014, 8:57 AM
Amazing. This pretty much proves that Marvel can introduce the weirdest, most out-there concepts imaginable, and as long as they find a way to make it appealing, people will pay to see it. This opens up even more doors for what we could see on the big screen, Marvel or otherwise. ANYONE who is a comic book fan should be thrilled about this movie's success.
Pasto - 8/10/2014, 8:57 AM
McNya didn't get banned. He's just lurking.
TimL - 8/10/2014, 8:58 AM
This still has to launch here (28th August).
AlexanderLykins - 8/10/2014, 9:00 AM
@Pasto
Good.

Marvel1997 - 8/10/2014, 9:00 AM
I thought McNya was a pretty cool chill guy what's the deal?/what happened
SauronsBANE - 8/10/2014, 9:00 AM
Not to open up the can of worms again, but I'll never understand how someone can get in trouble for spoilers for movies that haven't come out yet...and then get faced with accusations of not having seen afore-mentioned movies. Obviously I'm missing something.
LexHairFight - 8/10/2014, 9:00 AM
Bigger the risk, the higher the reward.
SuperCat - 8/10/2014, 9:01 AM
I needed this news after hearing about TMNT. Go GotG!
CerealKiller - 8/10/2014, 9:01 AM
Anyone think this will break 1 billion? I want it to, but i'm skeptical..
MrMartinMarvel - 8/10/2014, 9:02 AM
@Pheezematic Long story short, Josh called him out for lying about attending all those prescreening in front of everybody, presumably leaving him humiliated.
StarYeezus - 8/10/2014, 9:02 AM
Great news! This movie deserves it.
Reasonnnn - 8/10/2014, 9:03 AM
@CerealKiller Betting man in me says no. $600-700 mil though.
Marvel1997 - 8/10/2014, 9:03 AM
@SauronsBANE- It's a good thing because if people are flocking to see this then they should pretty much be able to watch anything no matter how ridiculous it looks or sounds (Which is good news for ANTMAN) Just as long as it works
Batmaniac - 8/10/2014, 9:03 AM
GOTG FTW!
Reasonnnn - 8/10/2014, 9:03 AM
@MrMartinMarvel which article? :o

ALegendaryPanda - 8/10/2014, 9:04 AM
Thanos... is pleased.

AlexanderLykins - 8/10/2014, 9:04 AM
@SauronsBANE
People who don't like McNyagano are moronic.
danetooeasy - 8/10/2014, 9:04 AM
Deserves every penny!
UlisesMX - 8/10/2014, 9:04 AM
1 billion is out of reach, but maybe 700 and that would be insane from a new franchise of not well know heroes
SauronsBANE - 8/10/2014, 9:05 AM
@CerealKiller, Probably not. We've gotten spoiled by so many $1 billion hits the past few years, and it's easy to forget how insanely difficult to reach that level. It needs the perfect storm of a high opening weekend, plenty of IMAX/3D sales, people willing to pay for repeat viewings, and serious staying power. Still, it doesn't even NEED to hit $1 billion. The sequel's already green-lit, and I think anywhere from $400-$500 million would be a massive success.
Marvel1997 - 8/10/2014, 9:05 AM
@MrMartinMarvel - Do they know eachother in person?
Marqy47 - 8/10/2014, 9:05 AM
Oh, awesome news ... Congrats to the people involved with this movie. It is great. This deserves every form of tangible and intangible praise it gets.

2014 has been the greatest year for CBMs so far.
Ranger14 - 8/10/2014, 9:05 AM
I won't break a billion. $600-700 tops would be my guess, which is still outstanding, It's weird, as we won't know the final box office numbers until November.
