Variety report that The Dark Knight Rises star has passed on Darren Aronofsky's Noah, with the director now said to be pursuing X-Men: First Class' Michael Fassbender for the lead role in the Biblical epic. While no official offer has been made at this point (Deadline add that Bale was the top choice but was forced to pass on the project due to commitments to Terrence Malick's Lawless and Knight Of Cups) the actor has reportedly spoken to Aronofsky and is available after work on Warner Bros. and Rupert Wyatt's Londongrad has come to a halt. Production on Noah is expected to begin early next year, with a script by Aronofsky and Ari Handel which was subsequently rewritten by Gladiator and Skyfall scribe John Logan.

Disappointed that Bale passed, would've loved to see him in the film. But Fassbender would be an excellent choice.

Christian Bale got angry again...

Fassbender gets all the love these days.

I agree @Rormachine - Both are fantastic actors. But one man takes the number one spot for me:

Yeah Bale would've been good, but glad to see Fassbender taking it on.

Stay nerdy my friends ;)

Fassbender must have the best agent in Hollywood. He tipped to get everything!
jeremySee - 11/30/2011, 1:32 PM
And just think...if it wasn't for Fassbender, JONAH HEX would've sucked even more than it did :/
RorMachine - 11/30/2011, 1:33 PM
Fassbender has been making waves for quite a while though in more indie, little seen movies. Although his rise to stardom seems quick, he's been around years. I first saw him in an Irish film called Hunger and he blew me away. Then Fish Tank, Eden lake. I always hoped he'd make it big.

RyanLantern77@ He is my number one favorite actor too!:)

I saw Fassbender first time in Hex tv-series. If remember right he played demon Azazel in it.

Another actor for which a comic book movie seems to have been the tipping point. They should thank us more often.
Greengo - 11/30/2011, 1:47 PM
Awesome!

How bout Guy Pierce?
RunDTC - 11/30/2011, 1:50 PM
Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, and Guy Pearce are all great choices for Noah.

Alan Rickman anybody?
Bandrews1 - 11/30/2011, 1:51 PM
Hmmm Fassbender would make a great replacement.
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/30/2011, 2:01 PM
Rickman is awesome!

RunDTC - 11/30/2011, 2:01 PM
WAIT! Daniel Day-Lewis!

I'VE ABANDONED MY DOVE!

WHO IS THIS UNDER MY ARK?
AK47 - 11/30/2011, 2:04 PM
Fassbender 4 Batman after Bale! Hell, I could even c Fassbender as the next Joker, the guy is a stand up actor n always brings intensity to whatever role he's in!
JayOh - 11/30/2011, 2:18 PM
@AK47 dude you took the post right from my finger tips! Fassbender FOR THE NEXT BATMAN/BRUCE WAYNE!!!

Hopefully the Next Batman trilogy is SLIGHTY (emphasis on slightly) more campy, or specifically less realistic/Nolan-y. WAY more like the comics. I think Robin could be there if done right and his costume colors were severely muted like and olive green (tactical) and deep red (stealthy)
JayOh - 11/30/2011, 2:19 PM

kman - 11/30/2011, 2:32 PM
I think Fassbender is actually a better choice.
redleaf - 11/30/2011, 2:49 PM
Viggo Mortensen!
NeoBaggins - 11/30/2011, 3:04 PM
Sloppy seconds I guess.

@redleaf Viggo would have been full of win.
Kyos - 11/30/2011, 6:44 PM
I actually like Fassbender even better than Bale, so hell yeah! Somebody mentioned Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman, now I want a movie with the four of them starring...
Greengo - 11/30/2011, 6:49 PM
Lol @Run.

I just saw a pic of Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Licoln.

I was speechless.
Number1Wolverine - 11/30/2011, 7:03 PM

whoops... too many tabs... disregard my post above... lol.
redleaf - 11/30/2011, 8:09 PM
isn't fassbender too young for noah?
SuspenseSmith - 11/30/2011, 8:17 PM
@redleaf

Noah was only like 600 when he built the arc... taking into account that he lived to be 950 after that. SO he was technically middle aged. (Genesis 9:28-29)

I actually like the idea of a younger looking prophet. The classic big white beard look couldn't have always been the case for these guys. I like the idea of the average man being called to do miraculous things rather than an obviously sage looking guy being a prophet.
RoyalUsher - 11/30/2011, 8:43 PM
I agree with you SuspenseSmith. In Biblical times from what I've read and learned the people lived longer but even though they were say 200 then didn't look like that. Many scientist believe that Earth was surrounded by a canopy of water which at the time of the The Flood or Great Deluge.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day and the darkness he called "night. And there was evening, and there was morning - the first day. And God said, Let there be an expanse (raqyia, firmament) between the waters to separate water from water." So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above It. And It was so.. And there was evening, and there was morning - the second day. (Gen. 1:1-7 NIV)

It seems clear, on the surface at least. Water that covered the primal earth was separated creating water above and below. The upper water, called ‘raqiya , is described as a solid, metallic like canopy surrounding the earth.

Under these conditions life on Earth was quite different from how it is now and in this giant green house environment lifeforms grew bigger, stronger and lived longer.

Yeah, after Noah, people's life spans became more like today. They died younger and younger. There's a lot of mystery bibically about the technical details of pre-flood days.

And if your going by shear archeological data... well, why would even care about a bible based movie?

The thing is science is based off of uniformitarianism, which means that all geologic phenomena may be explained as the result of existing forces having operated uniformly from the origin of the earth to the present time."

Now if uniformitarianism is false, that the rates of erosion, decay, and aging were different than today, it would easily answer for age and time discrepancies between the Bible and science... but that's just a theory.

I wonder if there will be a wolverine on the ark?

haha anybody remember when Bale played Jesus in that tv movie?
kman - 12/1/2011, 12:34 AM
@SuspenseSmith - Not sure what other forum you were planning on posting that video clip......but man, it is so refreshing seeing that scene without the "No, NOOOOOOO!!!!" bullshit that Lucas added.....as if he hadn't ruined those classics enough.

Thanks for getting me all wired up, making me think about how much I hate George Lucas! DAMMIT!!!!!

Noah's ark is my favorite fairy tale...it was also told in the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was written hundreds of years before the Bible. Most people of the Abrahamic religions don't know this. They don't like to research or think too much, they like to just stick to what they were told. As a matter of fact many world religions have a flood story that are far older than the Genesis story Anyway, they just ripped it off Gilgamesh and catered it to the Jewish faith.

Any first-grader could tell you that people don't live to be hundreds of years old. It's physiologically impossible. it's impossible to collect two of every land animal on Earth. Or that, even if one could, getting them all on a single boat the size of the supposed Ark would be impossible. Or if you could, it would be impossible to keep them all onboard for 40 days and 40 nights. (If you read any books other than the bible, or even go to school, you will learn that animals feed on other animals or feed on food sources not found on a magic boat.)

but whatever I can't wait for this film

I love both Bale and Fassbender. My 2 great platonic loves.
I hope Fassy gets the role.
