DEBUNKED: Zak Penn To Start Work On DOCTOR STRANGE Script Later This Year?

It seems as if work is finally moving ahead on Doctor Strange! Zak Penn (who will receive a story credit on The Avengers) has strongly hinted that he will be working on the film later this year.

Asked by a fan on Twitter what sort of credit he will get for his work on Marvel's The Avengers (as expected, it's a story credit due to the fact that director Joss Whedon chose to rewrite the entire screenplay from scratch) Zak Penn has dropped a very intriguing hint about an upcoming project he may soon start work on. Many thanks to CBM's own @MarkJulianCBM for the heads up.



Penn is best know to comic book fans for writing Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk. Other writing credits include Inspector Gadget and Behind Enemy Lines. In case you can't quite work it out, Penn was asked whether he would work on another superhero movie and replied that he, "might do something very strange." This seems like a fairly strong indication that Marvel Studios are moving ahead with Doctor Strange and that he will work on the script recently completed by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Whether or not this is an indication that it is the mysterious 2014 movie from the studio remains to be seen.

UPDATE: Well, it was a fun theory while it lasted! You can now breath a sigh of relief as Zak Penn himself has confirmed that he is NOT involved with the planned Doctor Strange movie.

Awesome! Then people can take that script, throw it out, re-write it entirely and make it actually watchable like Joss Whedon and Edward Norton did. I don't want the writer of X-3 and Electra anywhere near this project.

he wrote the story for The Last Stand, not good. I hope he don't mess up Dr. Strange's story, tho he got a couple of wins under his belt it seems. can't wait to hear more about this?)

This movie could be one of the best. Tons of potential... I'm a little worried about this dude's track record though... Electra? Last Stand? Inspector Gadjet? *blech*...

Dr Strange would be a great bit of variety in a future Avengers line up, bit worried about trusting someone called 'Zak' who wrote X3 with a wedge of the MCU

Let's hope somebody like Guillermo del Toro gets the directing gig and completely rewrites Zak's shitty script the way Joss Whedon did.

Does Zak Penn have blackmail photos of Avi Arad, or is Avi just that clueless? Marvel needs to kick both of these clowns to the curb.

This guy write with his feet. Hollywood must stop relly much hire him for this work. Never again !What is the problem of Feige sometimes ? He must be more respectfull with audience. Use talented screenwriter.

Is Kevin Fiege Zak Penn's uncle or something. With all of the talented writers in Hollywood and also all the writers in the Marvel Bullpen how does Marvel get it's needle stuck on Zak Penn?

Yeah they also forgot to say he did the story for X2, one of the best cbm of all time. Also assisted Joss in the story in the Avengers. Come on guys give him a chance. In all fairness X3 wasn't bad but, just to much going on. And elektra was horribly acted.

The incredible hulk underwent a lot of re writes. And while I really like that movie it's still just ok in terms of quality. Marvel has a pretty good track record so far. don't F it up with this guy

He also wrote X2 and Suspect Zero. Both are great movies. You guys will throw anybody under the bus for one or two bad movies. X3 sucked because of Brett Ratner's inability to direct character driven story. Same with Elektra. Mark Steven Johnson can't direct a movie to save his life. It has less to do with the writing than the director in those cases.

And since when is using the word strange an indication of anything. He didn't put it in quotes. He didn't capitalize the word. He just used a word.

Just playing devils advocate. You guys tend to not look further back than the last couple projects, instead of looking at the entire scope of an artists career to see what they can do. Besides, if he writes the first draft, it's only a jump off point. Everything goes through rewrites. Such as Incredible Hulk and Avengers. That would happen in this case also. You should worry more about who directs than who writes the first draft.

Zak Penn aint a good writter at all. the movies that was good are the ones that been rewrote by other screen writters.

Director and actors will be a huge part of it, moreso than Penn writing it. Marvel will basically be in control, so he'll just need to really toss in the seasoning to their stew. I'm not worried about it and a Strange movie would probably be a long way off. I'm shocked we haven't heard word one of any movie for Ms Marvel or any news about her or She Hulk. Little shocked by that.

Writing matters and Zak Penn is terrible. The dialogue in The Incredible Hulk was just bad. X3 was worse. So much worse.

I hope that's a hint to Doctor Strange. I'm not sure why he would capitalize the word 'might', but not strange?

I guess he wouldn't want to get people too excited if he doesn't get the job, which could be due to the movie stalling.

@deathmetalbrian I thought TIH was a very good movie. And Behind Enemy Lines was good too. I'm not going to go into his other writing credits. For obvious reasons.

I never read him in comics but his character was cool to play in the Ultimate Alliance game. Dr strange would be an awesome movie because his powers are unique compared to the other CBM heroes we have seen. Statistically speaking it is a good chance that it will not be done well based on the fact that the majority of CBM's have not been good in my opinion. Just hope this new run of movies; Batman, Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America,and hopefully Man of Steel raise the bar and movies like Ghost Rider, Green Lantern, Dare Devil,Wolverine Origins, Superman Returns and FF4 won't happen again

dr.strange + namor + the incredible hulk 2 = the defenders(maybe add iron fist into the mix as well)

then we'll have two super teams in the marvel cinematic universe.

great news on the fact they moving forward with a Dr Strange and terrible news on the fact that Marvel Studios still hasnt let zak penn go. But then i know the other dr strange writers will come around and re write the script like JW did with the Avengers so im not to worried lol
