I've decided we don't know who they are because:

a)the answer is of no consequence to the story,

b) there made up for the movie or BARELY mentioned in the comic, with no backstory.

@skeemen i doubt that, the best kept secrets are the 2014/15 projects for marvle, the TDKR ending, which only 4 people know of, the fact that ducard was ras was an epic secret, it affected the toys that came out, neeson's role in TDKR, two face being in the the dark knight, all these things really meant something to the film and story, the aliens could be any race and it wouldnt matter
Macksimus

the shape of the helmets reminds me of a Skrull's head, but I don't see how skrulls can be fleshed out properly in this movie which only has a few Avengers/super-powered heros in it.

@gamecreatorjj

Though true, over the last few days we have been staring at close ups of them, and we still have no idea who they are, if they're from the comics or created for the movie. And we won't find out until it's release.

It's the best kept secret that was ever flaunted around in front of our faces in comic book movie history.

1) Why didn't you just make this an article...or have you already?

2) What are you talking about "insect like"? I though that they looked like they had animal skull faces.

I really believe the people on this site have put way more energy into the alien's identities than Marvel Studios did. Do not be suprised when you are walking out of the movie when it is all said and done, and are still scratching your head over who those aliens were.

If they aren't from Earth, Humans would class it as an Alien, like Thor is.

Fogs

@ralfinader - yeah man, I'm seriously thinking that way too now...

My guess is that it's either some other character's generic army (thanos, for example) or an unnamed force Loki spawns.
ThanToast
ThanToast - 4/10/2012, 3:06 PM
@GUNSMITH Thank you very much for that roundup! I think it is very unlikely that they are Atlantians. They look nothing like Atlantians. I'd love for Namor to enter the MCU at some point, but not like this.
My bet is the Alpha Centurions. There doesn't seem to be much comic lore on them, and they look almost similar to the aliens we've seen.
It has to be the Alpha Centurions or the Badoon. Smaller name aliens are easy to change from the source material.
RaMan
RaMan - 4/10/2012, 3:23 PM
They may also be the Korbinites (Beta Ray's alien race)
