THE AVENGERS Passes $260M Overseas; May Have A $160M Opening In North America

Just yesterday, we brought you the news that Marvel's The Avengers was expected to reach an impressive worldwide gross of $500 million by Sunday. Well, the latest analysis from Deadline instead estimates a sum closer to $585M after the film is released in North America this Friday (where it's predicted to have a massive $160M opening) as well as in Russia and China. While some slightly more conservative estimates have those figures as being a little lower, the superhero ensemble made a jaw dropping $42.3M overseas yesterday, bringing its total through Tuesday to $260.5M. This impressive figures are sure to have been boosted at least a little through repeat viewing as the film really is something very special indeed. I'm not counting on it breaking the opening weekend record... I definitely think it's possible, but I also think it could possibly come in well below it. It shouldn't matter though. This film is a monster success already, and will have blown past the worldwide record for any Marvel Studios Film release well inside of 10 days of opening in the US.

It's also great for all the rest of the summer slate. When a fun film opens summer, it reminds audiences how much like they like the big screen blockbuster experience. Profits will be up for Hollywood this year.
