Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso Talks MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS

Marvel Comics E-i-C Axel Alonso discusses his input in Marvel's The Avengers as well as seeing Joss Whedon's screenplay come to life on the big screen. And what does he make of Ant-Man and Wasp being replaced with Hawkeye and Black Widow?! Find out here.

"When you're editing a comic book script, you can't help but form a mind’s eye picture of events that don’t always line up with what the artist draws. Ditto when you're reading a screenplay," says Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso on being lucky enough to have read Joss Whedon's screenplay for Marvel's The Avengers. As for whether or not he noticed any major changes in the final movie, he tells Comic Book Resources, "Directors, cinematographers and actors bring stuff to scenes that you can’t predict. Take Robert Downey, Jr., for instance – from what I’ve heard he largely improvises on his script. So, yeah, there were differences between my mind’s-eye picture of the script and the movie itself. That said, I'm amazed how much of Joss' script remained intact. Like the Black Widow introduction scene – one of my favorite scenes in the script – I prayed it wouldn’t lose something in translation to the screen. Well, it didn’t. Joss deconstructs the "James Bond intro." I mean, wow."

As for the exclusion of Ant-Man and Wasp (two of the original team members in the comic books) he adds, "First, let me say, there couldn’t be anyone more thrilled that S.H.I.E.L.D. is such a major player in all of our movies. I've loved S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury since I was a little boy that picked up dog-eared back issues of the Steranko series from a flea market in San Francisco. [Laughs] A global-spanning, quasi-military entity like S.H.I.E.L.D. is the perfect device to bring the heroes together. I mean, the Avengers are a set of mismatched parts: a man out of time, a “god” with daddy issues, a billionaire playboy in an iron suit, a 98-lbs geek who turns into an engine of destruction when he gets upset, and two humans who’s unenviable task is to measure up to them – Black Widow and Hawkeye. All these characters are forced to form a team, to form a family. Who else but S.H.I.E.L.D. could put them together?"

"That said, I'd guess that Hawkeye and the Black Widow were subbed in for Ant-Man and Wasp because they are human. They weren’t powered up by science; they aren’t from another world. They give you a ground's eye view of the action."
So, exactly how much control DOES Alonso have in dictating what does make it to the big screen in these Marvel Studios adaptations? "The extent of my input was to sit on a committee that was involved in discussions of the core truths of the characters – what's baby and what's bath water about each character?" he reveals. "You know, the difference between Captain America’s pirate boots and his shield. We discussed what makes each character tick, and what people love about them. I’m pretty sure my take on Iron Man pretty much cemented that I'll never be allowed to edit "Iron Man”! [Laughs] Hey, no regrets. I stand by my analysis. Tony Stark is NOT Peter Parker!"

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man

Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk

they already have tight budget no need to add more superpowers

I can understand them not putting the Pyms in it. You don't put all your eggs in one basket and if the movie is a success, bring them in for part two. Imagine the buzz when they announce Avengers 2 will have them. Then, when Avengers 2 comes out, they can gauge the popularity of the two and decide on a solo. Kinda like how the Hulk is getting a solo movie now because of the response.

As great as Avengers was there were moments they got dangerously close to going too far. When Loki was interacting with the alien for example. The Alien looked very similar to characters in the Masters Of The Universe movie and was an unpleasant reminder in other crappy things like Power Ranger bad guys. It didnt hurt the movie but if we saw more of that sort of thing it couldve.
In the Avengers movie universe, the world seemed ordinary just 4 years ago. Iron Mans emergence was an incredible occurrence. Now in that world, in the span of just a few years you have a Hulk, a Thunder God and an alien attack.
It's been cool the way theyve merged fantasy and reality, but if they keep adding more and more fantasy to the point it looks silly, then there's a problem.
We kind of had that with the 90's Batman. And the 80's Superman. They turned those franchises into silly movies that insult the viewer.
They need to keep a level of realism in the Avengers. I dont think Wasp and Ant Man are the way to go.

@bgg1175
you right, when I saw loki, captain america and hooded alien it really reminded me of power ranger especially when loki shoot laser from his rod and fodder alien army it look like power ranger with bigger budget and

LOVED The Avengers but i felt Hawkeye's and Widow's Scenes at times were way too unrealistic, how can an average human just grab on a speeding flying Chitauri machine, even if Captain America was able to match the speed with his shield boost Widow's arms would have ripped out of their sockets. However it just one of those movies that you have to suspend reality at points.
Krisgreet423 - 5/6/2012, 7:54 AM
They weren't in the The Avengers for a few reasons as stated by the post's above but I think the main reason was that Edgar Wright didn't pull his finger out and made the awful Scott Pilgrim film instead. I mean the guy has been on Ant-Man since before Iron Man 1 came out. Marvel need to get him going or fire his ass.
OtakuPapi - 5/6/2012, 8:02 AM
@bgg1175: I cant believe u have such a negative outlook on Avengers. The movie was damn near flaw. 2 hours plus and it never felt that long and it kept you wanting more and more. There is only so much realism you can have in a movie with a God and a man that turns into a big green savage its a tad bit silly.Maybe you wanted it to be a Shield espionage movie.Avengers is everything it was supposed to be and more
GUNSMITH - 5/6/2012, 8:02 AM
I LOVED THE MOVIE, IT'S DONE SO WELL THEY'LL PUT EVEN MORE MONEY INTO THE SECOND ONE, INTRODUCE MORE TEAM MEMBERS, I COULD SEE WASP AND ANT MAN AND POSSIBLY BLACK PANTHER OR VISION INCLUDED IN THE NEXT ONE.

I THINK THE NEXT ONE SHOULD BE AN EARTH BOUND MENACE CAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO REPEAT THE SIMILAR MENACE AGAIN..FIRST AVENGERS MOVIE ALIENS ATTACK, SECOND MOVIE ALIENS AGAIN..YOU NEED VARIETY CAUSE OTHERWISE ITS JUST GONNA GET REPETITIVE,

ULTRON WOULD BE AWESOME WHICH WOULD OPEN UP SPOTS FOR PYM AND JANET AND VISION TO JOIN THE MIX.
Jolex - 5/6/2012, 8:08 AM
How was Tony like Peter in the movie?
GRYDE - 5/6/2012, 8:20 AM
@OtakuPapi I dont have a negative outlook on the movie at all. The movie was epic. My response is about AntMan and Wasp. The movie was great. But would it have been if it had too much fantasy and very little realism? What if Coulson walked up alive at the end? Or some being just magically fixed the battle damage to NY?
There is a point of fantasy they cant go beyond without looking silly.
You need to read comments more carefully and get the context before replying.
And this movie was the most entertaining movie Ive ever seen. It sure as hell didnt lack anything because we didnt the Wasp or Antman. ltfol

nice gif man!!!!!

Avengers is the best movie of 2012!!!
CapemA - 5/6/2012, 8:39 AM
Don't really understand the love affair with Ant-Man and Wasp. I for one was glad they were replaced with Hawkeye and Black Widow. This movie was great. It was like watching a comic book come to life. I don't look for realism in comic books or comic book related material. If I want realism I'll watch the evening news or visit a nearby city.

marvel72 - 5/6/2012, 8:50 AM
ant-man & wasp in the avengers would of been a fanboy's wet dream, but i'm fine with them not being in it we still got the prime members captain america, iron man, thor & the hulk.

introduce ant-man & wasp in their own movie, but hank pym needs to be the avengers 2 because of a few reasons.

-ultron
-vision
-yellow jacket
dailycomicsfix - 5/6/2012, 8:52 AM
@SuperArgo: Word of mouth will help but #'s will steadily decline. This movie will break a billion dollars, probably within a month or so. If BOMojo's estimates are accurate the Avengers have made 641M ww.
tracydavis001 - 5/6/2012, 12:34 PM
Next let's bring in the Black Panther!!!
QUITEMASSIVE - 5/6/2012, 1:29 PM
they cant take avengers 2 likely cause adding thanos in the mix thats gotta be a deep story board, and tey must add charactors im really not buying thor hulk cap and ironman beating thanos they need more characters . too bad these studios wont play nice can you imagine if they could use spiderman, and the fantastic 4 and a 3rd of the xmen in this smh it'll kill avatars record..
Natetrix79 - 5/6/2012, 1:32 PM
On film the wasp wouldn't work & neither would antman, what could they do??? Turning small to fight aliens wouldn't help much if you think about it.The Hulk stomped their ass,Cap used his whole arsenal,Thor went hammer time on'em,Hawkeye gave'em headshots,Black Widow used their own weapons against them,an Ironman was air support Giant man maybe but he couldn't be building sized he would destroy everything if stumbled & fell. I think that's the only reason they didn't use them, certain Heros & Villians just don't work on film. And if you wanna talk about realism then you can't have all of these super smart geniuses like Stark,Banner,The Pyms,Reed Richards(I know fox has him just making a point!) and none of them could recreate the Super Soilder serum from WWII or make a better one.
Natetrix79 - 5/6/2012, 1:45 PM
And me & my boy The Monster Ahtu were talking & I came with this the Pyms show up in the next one but they are just scientist for Shield making weapons & tech. They use some of the alien tech that was left behind that Shield collected & reverse engineer it. Hank uses some of it on his pet project a Cyborg that he's been buildind. He models the cyborgs face after his fallen friend Agent Coulson & names it Vison!
niknik - 5/6/2012, 9:24 PM
Ant-Man and the Wasp would have worked just fine in this film. They didn't need to be involved as super heroes from act one. They could have been introduced as shield scientists with him just reaching a breakthru with Pym particles being able to shrink things. They could have made a big splash in the 3rd act with Giant-Man showing up mid battle to lend a hand.

It sure could have worked given half a chance. My only two complaints for this film were them not being in it and the Hulk once again not speaking more than two words the entire film. They lost a great opportunity of having him say a couple smart assed comments, like when he smacked Thor or "woke up" Stark. Once again all we got was RAAAHHHHRRR from him over and over and over.
MaximusRodd - 5/7/2012, 3:15 AM
I understand why fans want the Pyms in, but I understand more why Marvel Studios would not want to include them. As a life-long fan, I know of Hank Pyms' seminal contribution to the series as the creator and creator-by-proxy of Ultron and the Vision. But let's face it, as superheroes they are very silly and would be viewed that way by the general audience in 2012-2017.
MaximusRodd - 5/7/2012, 3:20 AM
The Vision and Scarlet Witch should be introduced before Ant Man and Wasp. Just have H. Pym be a scientist who creates Ultron.
MaximusRodd - 5/7/2012, 3:25 AM
@bgg1175 And Batman in TDKR is starting to look like a middle class Halloween costume. Thanos squashed any M of U or Power Rangers comparison. Seems like you're stuck in the mode all doubters were in when they saw Cap's new costume. Get over it, it's a record-breaker.
toco89 - 5/7/2012, 8:23 AM
Could somebody explain the stark is not pete parker bit?

Thanks
Gary8264 - 5/7/2012, 4:07 PM
@toco89, I'd say that he is talkin' 'bout the fact that the movie Stark is so funny with the one liners and jokin'. That's how Parker is in the comics not Stark
EarOne - 5/8/2012, 5:37 AM
hey, Avengers IS the best movie of the year. NO DOUBT. however...i won't be a hypocrite and NOT admit there ARE some things about it that COULD'VE gone wrong and ruined the movie. on this i agree with @bgg1175. and YES. the Power Rangers. THAT's the movie The Other reminds me of. the way he looks AND talks. totally, power rangers-y. as much in a roll as he is NOW, Whedon MUST tread very CAREFULLY in translating these out of OUT of this world characters, Other and his boss and even countless others.

if he's not carefull, the franchise might end up entertaining just a few, instead of the world wide phenomenon it's doing NOW. and THAT's all @bgg1175 is saying. he/she LOVES the movie too, but like me, he's concerned on the way they visualized Loki's behind-the-scene helpers.

even Thanos, at the end..he kinda looks like he belongs in a video game. but, like Cap's modern outfit and Hulk's still-not-there-yet cg creation..they're very much helped by the first rate quick-cut editing. it helps sell everything on screen, even The Other and Thanos.

and on the Pyms..yeah, capemA and some other poster's right. they won't really help with the fight against the aliens, really..i mean even in the EMH toon series, Wasp's electrical zaps don't actually do anything but ANNOY opponents. and Hank's giant size is often made fun even in the Millar/Hitch's Ultimates comics. so yeah..those characters are quite OUTDATED and won't necessarily work in a live-action blockbuster like this.

sure...it all depends on great writing..but, with all the bigger characters already at play..the pyms seem to be..do they REALLY matter?? my answer is: NO.

of course you can always incorporate them into the story, like yeah..making em a scientist couple, working for SHIELD, like in the Ultimates books (the first volume), which is perfect. and you can create the same tension between Hank and Banner (if fury then employs him at shield, after the movie's battle). maybe, hank, out of his frustration in not being able to match banner's intelligence, decides to create ULTRON, which later proves to be a huge disaster. they could make him this tragic and very flawed character.

as for jan..well, the team DOES need more ladies. and going small would be more useful than going giant-size. she could come up with the size decreasing formula and helps shield in their stealth operations, or something. that can work. but yeah, against hordes of alien, she'd be pretty much useless.

oh, and regarding widow NOT losing her arm when she grabs the alien speedster..doesn't she get some super soldier type of serum as well..?? at least, THAT's what in the comics, right?? i mean, that should be the explanation, otherwise, her being able to have THAT much stamina in battling the aliens would make NO sense.

same with hawkeye, in the books (ultimates), he has the special shades or goggles to help his aim, right..?? in the movie, howevah, he NEVER wears em, and still never misses. now, if he doesn't get ANY 'special' scientific help in ENHANCING his eyes and instincts..it shouldn't make much sense, either. EVEN for a super hero movie.

i think all these should be explored and explained in a SHIELD movie, if not a solo Widow or Hawkeye movie.
