COMICS: Marvel Reveals THE FIRST X-MEN; The Team Founded By...Wolverine?!

Did you think that Charles Xavier founded the first team of mutants? Did you think that Giant Size X-Men #1 was the first time he and Wolverine met? How about Magneto? Well, think again! Marvel has revealed their plans for a new series which rewrites history.

By Josh Wilding - 5/14/2012
A new five issue limited series this August will reveal that it was in fact Wolverine who assembled the first team of mutants in the Marvel Universe. Written by Christos Gage and with art from Neal Adams, The First X-Men takes place before X-Men #1 and it sees Logan attempt to recruit both Xavier (who turns him down) AND Magneto to his team. Rather than a school, Logan will put together a team of soldiers which includes Sabretooth, Magneto, Bomb and a new female character. The series is set firmly in continuity and will feature a cameo from Namor the Sub-Mariner before he regained his memory in the pages of Fantastic Four. So, the first mutant team was put together by Wolverine (who Adams strongly hinted funded the X-Men). And who said Marvel was running out of ideas? Oh...

Or, to spin it another way...

From their "Next Big Thing" Liveblog:

"At the beginning, Stan and Jack were experimenting. You had Professor X, bald and in a wheelchair. These strange kids already in costume. It seems to me like this was not the beginning of the story, but the middle." -Neal Adams

"Of all the mutants on Earth, Professor X could easily pass as a human. Why would he want to get involved in this? Maybe all this was going on before Professor X was Professor X...when Professor X was a teenager. Maybe mutant kids were getting abused by the military, by the government. Somebody would have been looking out for them, but maybe that person came to Charles Xavier, realizing he couldn't protect these kids. That was my pitch." -Neal Adams

"In those early X-Men stories, everybody hates and fears them, but we never really know why. It's so core to the concept, but it was there before the series started. Here we found out why mutants are so hated and feared in a way that is different from any other super heroes." -Nick Lowe

"Son....just don't!"
Thanos005 - 5/14/2012, 4:45 PM
Wolvie is my favorite character (after Thanos, of course) but seriously? No. Him getting his own school was good. It shows how he has grown as a character, but to learn he started the whole damn thing? Weak.
StormLoganSummers - 5/14/2012, 4:47 PM
As my name suggests, Wolverine is one of my favourite X-Men, but really? What's with this massive hard on for Wolverine?
dellamorte1872 - 5/14/2012, 4:48 PM
BOMB? sounds like an excuse for a character plus some RANDOM female character? thats funny, they dont really care which one lol i agree this is very similar to WOLVIES WEAPON X team. they'll also throw in MAGNETO + SABERTOOTH?? where is NEW characters? why do we get half cocked ideas from MARVEL?
DoomXfactor - 5/14/2012, 4:48 PM
Ahahahaha!
beetheb - 5/14/2012, 4:49 PM
Lulz, just another move in Marvel's slow but certain effort to make Wolverine the center of the X-Universe. In one year he's taken Xavier's job, his house and now his origin. All he needs to do now is nail Xavier's girl Lilandra and it's a clean punk out.
IDKwhatToChoose - 5/14/2012, 4:50 PM
Seriously Marvel slow down off Wolverine's nuts
GizmoEl - 5/14/2012, 4:52 PM
Dumb. Dumbdumbdumb. Just because he's popular doesn't mean he needs to be in everything..
marvel72 - 5/14/2012, 4:53 PM
wolverine's not overrated, overused yes but not overrated but i do agree this is a dumb f*ck idea.
JatevinM - 5/14/2012, 4:54 PM
Its not saying that the X-men were founded by Wolverine its saying that Wolverine brought a team together.
USAgent - 5/14/2012, 4:56 PM
Wow, Im glad Im an Avengers fan. The Xmen were cool in the mid 80s till the 90s. After that, they just blew whale penis. Its sad that nothing is sacred anymore in comics anymore. Fail on Marvel, this is lame. This is the most DC like move you all have every made, just sayin'
Pesmerga44 - 5/14/2012, 4:58 PM
DAMMIT MARVEL STOP USING WOLVERINE. No this is retarded we do not need another first X-men team the first was Cyclops, Jean Gray, Beast, Iceman, and Angel. Wolverine is so freaking overplayed stop using him can he die for a while like a good year or two kill the bastard so we can be rid of him I hate seeing him everywhere in Marvel. The X-men movies were ruined for me because how it all became about Wolverine it was kinda like Transformers. That should have been called Humans guest starring the Transformers well those movies should have been called Wolverine guest starring the X-men. I HATE WOLVERINE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Pesmerga44 - 5/14/2012, 5:03 PM
and wait Wolverine funded the X-men my God did he also create Cerebro and find all the original X-men and bring them to Professor X. That is such lazy writing why can't this be a what if story or something alternate dimension I don't know something but completely butt [frick]ing the original X-men to make them all about Wolverine.
ThunderKat - 5/14/2012, 5:08 PM
This idea is so ridiculous. I agree with all that this team would not be called X-Men. They would be a mutant militia or something. His being a leader now shows his character's evolution. Doesn't anyone remember how he has been a loner until he joins the X-Men? Did we all forget that the trauma of the adamantium also amplified his healing factor?
I would much rather read about a Sub-Mariner led team or some other character. Heck, I'd rather read more Invaders stories or (gulp) Defenders--the most boring team with the most interesting roster.
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 5/14/2012, 5:08 PM
When you are out of fresh ideas...write over good ones?!?!
nld3 - 5/14/2012, 5:13 PM
Neal Adams = Awesome!
sKeemAn - 5/14/2012, 5:14 PM
Ok maybe they are saying he got with a group of mutants to achieve a common goal. Doesn't mean he started the Xmen. I think the context in how the xmen are being used is wrong, not mention that wolverine is completely over- saturated and tired.
theomegasanction - 5/14/2012, 5:17 PM
Wolverine is one of my favs but I do not need to see him in every single book! Marvel will keep putting him in books because it sells. I will never read this; the rediscovery of past teams was cool at first and now just BS, plus art looks like sh#t. I would rather they just reboot
HavocPrime - 5/14/2012, 5:21 PM
Jesus and I thought warner bros were bad with Batman but this has taken the cake.
venkman9993592 - 5/14/2012, 5:30 PM
X-Men is starting to look like a one trick pony. And this book looks like pure fodder for the Fox movie machine to eat up and spit out in the theaters as a new crap movie.
continuezero - 5/14/2012, 5:37 PM
Wow for a bunch of "Comic Book Fans" I'm surprised at all the hate. Ya I get the criticisms, but how is anyone gonna write this off before they even read it? Everyone here has a comic book that looked stupid but turned out great after a read. I'll be honest I was VERY skeptical of Miles Morales' debut, but I read it and actually liked it. What if they come up with a sick idea? It's just immediately written off before reading? Come on trolls...stop hatin and give it a chance.
spectre88 - 5/14/2012, 5:37 PM
Bad idea
Haduken - 5/14/2012, 5:42 PM
@Ironman53 - how old are you ?
Niuhll - 5/14/2012, 5:42 PM
Decent idea, incredibly poor execution.
jambabeanjuice - 5/14/2012, 5:44 PM
I'm a huge fan of the X-Men and Wolverine but this concept of Wolvie forming an X team before giant size X-Men #1 really sucks.

Ugh I really hate the idea. Bad move Marvel.
SithLord - 5/14/2012, 6:01 PM
it's Marvel dickriding Logan in every possible way.
BlazinTexan - 5/14/2012, 6:13 PM
this is so [frick]ing stupid
Doctorwho22 - 5/14/2012, 6:13 PM
DAFOOK??
SotNatt - 5/14/2012, 6:16 PM
I'm not surprised.Wolverine is the Mary Sue of X-Men.
hope420 - 5/14/2012, 6:21 PM
How are Wolverines bone claws cutting through the guys armor?
Wildaniel - 5/14/2012, 6:25 PM
IDK, but I still will buy them.
REDSTORM - 5/14/2012, 6:28 PM
This is [frick]ing stupid.
DravinClaw - 5/14/2012, 6:33 PM
for me the x-men have stopped being interesting after the whole Onslaught story. And wolverine has lost all merit when the origins movie tanked and ruined a great story.
ClarkFarley2012 - 5/14/2012, 6:36 PM
Huh?? Umm ok
DoomXfactor - 5/14/2012, 6:39 PM
@Ironman53- THAT HUGH JACKMAN PIC IS HILARIOUS!!!
NotU - 5/14/2012, 6:53 PM
nice Don Cheadle made the team.
CorndogBurglar - 5/14/2012, 6:55 PM
@marvel87

No, this wouldnt conflict with Origins. Origins takes place way before this.

This only shits all over what everyone thought they knew about Xavier being an innovator and creating the original mutant team to benefit mankind...thats all.
Deathlok - 5/14/2012, 6:56 PM
@continuezero

You have to admit Wolverine is overused. Come on.
CorndogBurglar - 5/14/2012, 6:58 PM
In essence, it takes a great deal away from Xavier's character. Before, he was known as the original person who united a group of mutants to fight for their rights and beliefs. Now, apparently thats Wolverine.
TheOther - 5/14/2012, 7:00 PM
well that just sucks.
CorndogBurglar - 5/14/2012, 7:04 PM
@deathlok

Anyone saying Logan isnt overrused is lying to themselves. Overrated? I dont know, he's got a huge following. Its hard to say a character is overrated when he's in the top 4 most popular characters ever created.

But overused? Certainly. Wolverine and the X-Men. Astonishing X-Men. Wolverine. Uncanny X-Force. New Avengers. Wolverine: The Best There Is. He's in more books than any other character right now.
Sortis - 5/14/2012, 7:05 PM
ehhhh I love Wolverine, have since I was a kid, but this is getting sooo ridiculous it hurts...
Ghostt - 5/14/2012, 7:14 PM
this sounds like some shit Fox would pull for a cash grab movie
esvelazquez73 - 5/14/2012, 7:22 PM
Stupid, stupid, stupid... did I mention STUPID?
Nope. Wolverine has become the most overrated, overused, overcelebrated character in all of comics.

I mean come on... First the First Class thing totally rewrites history, but at least that is non-continuity.

REALLY? AFTER ALL THESE YEARS WE ARE ALL JUST NOW FINDING OUT THAT MAGNETO AND SABRETOOTH WERE ON LOGAN's ORIGINAL MUTANT TEAM? AND NOBODY HAS MENTIONED IT BEFORE THIS? NOT IN ALL THE BATTLES WITH MAGNETO OR THE DISCUSSIONS WITH CHARLES OR THE DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN CHARLES AND MAGNETO... NOBODY THOUGHT THIS WAS WORTH MENTIONING?!?!?!
SOMEBODY SHOOT ME WITH AN ADAMANTIUM BULLET...
